Silent Brass Parts & Accessories
The new and improved Silent Brass™ systems have been redesigned to include
everything a player needs and nothing they don’t. Small and light, while still maintaining
the quietness and pitch accuracy that Silent Brass™ has become known for, these
systems are very affordable.The module is smaller than a cassette tape and weighs
about as much – most of the weight is actually from the 9-volt battery that powers the
unit. An external sound source can be plugged into the AUX IN jack allowing the player
to play with a favorite song while the OUTPUT/ PHONES jack allows the unit to be
connected to a sound system or recording system for public performance and
recording, respectively.

These Pickup Mutes are quieter and offer far less resistance than traditional
practice mutes.
Instrument mutes come with cords.
The newly improved ST9 Personal Studio has been reduced to a size and weight
approximately 1/4th that of the previous model. It is a tiny amplifier, small enough to fit
into a shirt pocket, which offers a choice of ‘clean’ or echo-enhanced sound. It lets
musicians hear what is being played at an accustomed volume, to prevent any overblowing. The ST9 also has an AUX IN that serves as a direct line-in for playing along
with CDs or other devices. The ST9

When musicians get together, they want to play. But finding a place to jam isn’t
always easy, especially if the hour is late. That’s why Yamaha created the SX-6 Silent
Studio Mixer. The SX-6 is a 6-channel headphone amp/mixer that lets people jam
loudly—without making a sound! It’s perfect for use with Yamaha’s Silent Instrument
Series as well as with electronic instruments. It offers complete control of balance
and mix, yet, only players wearing headphones will hear it. It couldn’t be easier to
set up and use.

ST5 Digital Effect System
for Wind Instruments
This innovative device offers unprecedented tonal variety and expression for all
wind instruments. Powerful digital processors can twist and shape tone for
unlimited creativity whether in silent practice, the recording studio, or on-stage
performance. The ST5 was designed to work especially well with the Silent Brass
Pickup Mutes or with Yamaha’s MC-7 microphone (or similar microphones).
A range of 32 high-resolution digital effects including reverbs, delays, distortion,
pitch change, modulation dynamics and 4-band EQ can be used—up to 6 at a
time—to alter and enhance sound. 50 preset effect programs are provided, and
memory for 50 user
programs stores
personalized creations.
The built-in tuner,
metronome with rhythm
patterns, and phrase
sampler, make the ST5
a powerful practice
tool. Inputs for external
sources, such as
recordings, allow realtime pitch-change so
musicians can play
along with any music.
The SX-6 is equipped with individual channel
controls, so that each player can tailor
various requirements. Balance
controls for each channel let the
musician adjust the volume of an
instrument in the headphones mix.
The auxiliary sound can be controlled
(if a CD is inputed or an external
reverb unit is used), and a pan control
allows the instrument to be placed
anywhere within the stereo field. The SX6 can also be used as a mixer in amplified
live performances or for studio recordings.
Play Silently
SX-6
The Silent Studio’s internal headphone amp allows up to six people to silently
practice together as a group. Since each member wears a pair of headphones, sound
outside the system is kept to a minimum. It’s only within the system that the full sound of
the ensemble can be enjoyed. The SX-6 allows practice in places and at times that
would have been impossible to do before.
Use with Yamaha’s Silent Series and Electronic Instruments
Any of Yamaha’s Silent Series instruments can be used with the SX-6. It has a phantom
power supply to power the Pickup Mutes of the Silent Brass Series, and a special cable
that connects both the Pickup Mute and headphones is available. A Personal Studio ST9
unit can be connected to the AUX send and return jacks to add reverb to the overall
sound of the mix. In the Stereo Mode, channels 5 and 6 can be used to connect stereo
instruments such as the Silent Session Drums, Silent Strings, or an electronic keyboard.

Yamaha has earned an outstanding reputation for its high quality brass mouthpieces
from beginning and professional musicians alike. The result of a special approach to
design and manufacture, Yamaha mouthpieces deliver the performance and comfort
required where they are needed most: where instrument meets musician.
Yamaha’s mouthpiece production technique delivers consistent quality mouthpieces,
time after time. Other manufacturers use a specific cutting tool to create every
mouthpiece, which causes problems as tools start to wear. This can result in
inconsistent quality and poor performance. Our computer-aided design system and
computer-controlled lathe work together to produce the most precise, consistent
mouthpieces in the world.

Elements of the Mouthpiece
The form of a brass instrument mouthpiece consists of several elements relating to
shape and size. In choosing a new mouthpiece, musicians will benefit from reviewing
the principal elements of mouthpiece configuration.
Yamaha offers a full range of cup volumes for all styles of playing. As cup diameter
increases in size, more lip is available to vibrate, increasing the range of volume. Our
wide variety accommodates the physical characteristics of different players, and
encourages students to graduate to the fuller sound of larger cup volumes, throat
diameters, and backbores as their embouchures develop.

Amplifies sounds
The size of the shank controls how far the mouthpiece fits into the receiver. On most
instruments, the mouthpiece does not fit up against the end of the mouthpipe, creating a
gap between the end of the mouthpiece and the beginning of the mouthpipe. This gap

For many years, Yamaha has been producing custom-made mouthpieces for hundreds
of the world’s top musicians at our R&D Ateliers. These artists, unsatisfied with the
commercial models available, came to Yamaha because they had confidence that if
anyone had the skill needed to create a “dream” mouthpiece, it would be Yamaha.
These musicians knew from the experience gained in their long careers exactly the kind

How to Select a
Woodwind Mouthpiece
The tone quality and the overall response are
affected by slight variations of design and shape.
Thus, a mouthpiece must be chosen with extreme
care to fit the playing style and embouchure of the
performer. Yamaha mouthpieces are designed with consideration of each of
these specifications and are combined with an appropriate throat size, chamber
size and shape, baffle shape and angle, bore size, window size, and facing curve
depth. An inspection after every step of the manufacturing process ensures that
the mouthpiece can be relied upon.
The facing length measures from the
departure point of the reed to the tip of the
mouthpiece. A mouthpiece with a longer facing
length will produce a robust sound, while a shorter
facing length produces a brilliant, clear sound. With
the shorter facing length, the pitch is harder to
control and flexibility is reduced.

Don’t Just Tune Notes. . . Tune Entire Chords
The tonal difference between chords tuned in equal temperament and those using pure
intonation can be astonishing. Pure intonation makes harmony sound natural and true,
helping the music come alive. However, getting students to understand this subtle
difference can be very difficult. Traditional tuners correct only a single pitch, and the
concept of how notes relate to one another can be difficult to explain with words.
The Harmony Director lets you show students how to tune notes within the actual
chords. It has ten pre-set temperaments that will tune every note to precisely the right
pitch for that scale and key. It will help your students develop a clear understanding of
how their part should fit into the complete harmony of the ensemble.
Features
• 10 pre-set temperaments include pure, major, and minor scales, meantone, and
Pythagorean temperaments. Plus, six standard classic temperaments show how notes
and chords in any given scale and key should sound.
• Each of the 12 notes has individual pitch settings (in 0.1 cent increments) and volume
settings that can be set and saved to user memory.
• A transposition slider transposes the key from C to B , E , or F for greater compatibility
with various wind instruments.
• A built-in metronome offers volume controls for quarter, eighth, triplet, and sixteenth
note rhythms for backbeats and subdivisions. A tap tempo function offers quick setting

Violin Bridge Pickup
Replacing the bridge of an acoustic instrument with the VNP1 turns any violin into an
electric violin. It offers excellent sound reproduction, and the grounded circuit
eliminates 60 cycle hum and other unwanted noises while two contact sensors in the
bridge capture the full spectrum of sound from G-string to E-string; one is directed
toward the bass side and one is aimed at the treble side of the bridge, allowing a warm,
full, realistic replication of sound. The VNP1 enables acoustic violin players to plug into

Keiko Abe Signature Mallets
The Keiko Abe Signature Series features nine different degrees of soft to hard
mallets (MKA–01 through MKA–09) that make it easy for an artist to select a
voiced set of four for any musical situation. The hard mallets are heavy and
create a full sound from the upper range of the marimba, while the bass mallets
pull the fundamental resonance out of the instrument’s lower range. These
mallets are ideal for solo work as well as concertos, and boast Yamaha’s unique
thick rattan shafts in a variety of lengths. Each mallet has a unique feature and
texture as well as color-coded tape for easy identification during play.

sensitivity and virtuoso technique. It is these qualities that have made her a
leading force in the development of the marimba as a consummate concert
instrument. Her command of an overwhelming repertoire allows her
performances to range from solo concerts to chamber music and
improvisations. While her compositions have become standards of marimba
literature many composers have dedicated new works to her and she has
inspired and premiered countless new compositions.
In addition to her work as Professor of Music at Toho Gakuen School of Music
in Tokyo, Japan, she is in demand as a guest lecturer and has given master
classes in leading music conservatories in North America, Europe and Asia.
She has also released over 20 recordings and received numerous awards
including introduction into the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame in 1993.
