Speaker: Bradley Byrne
Date: October 13, 2015
District One Representative
Time: 11:45 a.m.
Location: Saraland Central Church of Christ
222 Saraland Blvd S., Saraland, AL 36571
Bradley Byrne was born and raised in Mobile, just a few miles from the site
where his great-great-great grandfather, Gerald Byrne, settled in the 1780’s.
After completing his undergraduate studies at Duke University, Byrne received
his law degree from the University of Alabama School of Law. He practiced law
in Mobile for more than 30 years, always active in the local community through
various service and economic development organizations.
Byrne served as a member of the Alabama State Senate representing District 32 from 2003 to 2007. Byrne
was elected to Congress in December 2013, to complete the term of Congressman Jo Bonner, who announced
his retirement in May 2013. Congressman Byrne was elected to his first full term on November 4, 2014.
In Congress, Byrne has established himself as an effective legislator by successfully advocating for local interests while also championing a smaller, less invasive federal government. Byrne has worked to support local
industry through improved infrastructure, including the construction of a new I-10 bridge over the Mobile
River. In an effort to shrink the federal bureaucracy, Byrne has pushed for the repeal of ObamaCare, fought to
reduce the regulatory burden on small businesses and worked to rein in out-of-control federal spending.
As a member of the House Committee on Armed Services, Byrne has been an outspoken supporter for a
strong national defense and improved quality of care at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Byrne has
traveled with the Armed Services Committee to the Middle East to meet foreign leaders and visit with United
States military personnel. Byrne has also used his position on the Committee to build support for the Littoral
Combat Ship (LCS), which is built in part at Mobile’s Austal USA shipyard.
A lifelong native of Alabama’s Gulf Coast, Byrne has been a strong supporter of the coastal economy. Byrne
led the charge for reforms to the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act which would
give more power over the Red Snapper fishery to the Gulf States. Byrne has also advocated for increased offshore energy production and American energy independence.
As a former member of the Alabama State Board of Education and former Chancellor of the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education, Byrne saw the House Committee on Education and the Workforce as a
natural fit. On the Committee, Byrne has attempted to return more control over education policy to the state
and local level. In addition to pushing right-to-work policies and taking on the National Labor Relations
Board (NLRB), Byrne has made workforce training and technical education one of his top priorities.
Byrne has been married to the former Rebecca Dukes of Montgomery for over 30 years. Rebecca is the President and CEO of The Community Foundation of South Alabama, and they are the parents of four children:
Patrick, Kathleen, Laura, and Colin. Bradley and Rebecca welcomed the birth of their first grandson, MacGuire Arthur Byrne, on September 4, 2014. Bradley lives in Fairhope where he and his family are members of
St. James Episcopal Church.
There will be a $5.00 charge for this Luncheon.

The Spartan Race comes to Saraland October 17th (The Alabama
Super) and over 3,000 participants have signed up for the event so
far. The Reebok Spartan Race is innovating obstacle racing on a
global scale. With 120 races around the world and 50 in the US
alone they offer three core races each escalating in distance, obstacle count and challenge level. The Spartan Super is 8 to 10 miles
with 25 obstacles riddled with signature obstacles: mud, barbed
wire, walls, rope and fire. We are excited here at the Chamber and for the City of
Saraland for all this event will bring. The Spartan Race committee has done an
outstanding job on organizing this event, making sure so many details have been taken
care of. Danny Corte with the Mobile Sports Authority, Jeff Kahn and Rita Wright
have been the leaders of our team along with all the others on the committee. The economic impact this event will bring to the City of Saraland and the Region is something
we will be looking forward to. We would like to thank Mayor Rubenstein and all the
city services for all they have done to make this event be successful.

Fellow Chamber Member:
We, Saraland First Toy Drive (a ministry of Saraland First Assembly), are
making preparations for the upcoming 2015 Christmas season. We have
spent the year fundraising, organizing and stockpiling bargain toys.
This year is our 14th annual toy drive for the North Mobile area. We partner
with our local school, Saraland Elementary, to help meet the needs of our
community. Last year we helped a total of 302 children. The goal of our
ministry is to make sure every child gets 3 toys for Christmas. And these
children are not asking for much…mostly baby dolls and actions figures, and
some are just asking for socks and underwear.
Our church adopts many children, but with this great number, we are always
still in need of adoptions, toy donations and fundraising opportunities. That’s where you come in….we need the support of our community and
business organizations to make sure that these children get toys on Christmas morning. Will you help us to help the children of our community? All
we ask is that you help our organization by either (1) hosting an in-office toy
drive (2) adopting a child or family for Christmas or (3) allowing us an opportunity to fundraise through your business. Just shoot us an email or give
us a call and let us know how you would like to be involved.
Thank you for all you do for Saraland’s children!
Very Early Merry Christmas,
Somer White Shamp
Pastoral Assistant/Toy Drive Coordinator
