Brush Fire Burns Near Alamo River In Holtville

There was a brush fire in
Holtville that started around 3:00
p.m. on Sunday September 29th.
The fire was located south of
Fourth Street and east of Orchard
Road.
The Holtville Fire department’s first engine arrived
around 3:25 and started to pull
hoses to battle the fire. The location of the fire was deep in the
gully down by the Alamo River,
making it hard to reach with the
hoses due to the steep terrain.
Holtville Fire Chief Alex
Silva stated that he had noticed
the smoke from the fire by look-
ing out his window and started to
respond, calling for a second
alarm as he traveled to the site.
Chief Silva’s first concern was
the structures near the fire. As
other departments and engines
arrived, he had them focus on
those areas and then quickly had
the fire surrounded.
Another problem that the fire
fighters experienced while fighting the fire were bees. The bees
started to swarm around and particularly around the Fire Engine
from El Centro.
The bees were still around on
Monday as the fire fighters were
mopping up. City workers called
in exterminators to deal with
them.
During the fire, traffic control
was provided by the Imperial
County Sherriff's Office. Fourth
Street and Fern Avenue were
closed to the public in order to
provide exclusive access for
emergency service personnel.
"Mutual aid was provided by
a number of agencies including
the Calexico Fire Department,
Calipatria Fire Department, El
Centro Fire Department, Imperial
County Fire Department and
Centinella

Mexican National Sales Tax Proposal
May Affect Calexico Economy

The Calexico Chamber of
Commerce discussed the impacts
of Mexico's Fiscal Reform and its
affect in the border region.
Mexican President Enrique
Pena Nieto presented his plan for
Fiscal Reform on September the
8th and would propose, among
other things, set a uniform sales
tax of 16 percent nationwide and
end the 11 percent rate currently
in place in Baja California.
This proposal has met with a
lot of opposition from Baja
California business people and its
political representatives saying
that it will put the state in a disadvantage since consumers will
go buy in the U.S. President Peña
Nieto is also proposing to eliminate a tax waiver granted for
imports temporarily brought into
Mexico for assembly in the
export-oriented
maquiladora
manufacturing facilities.
Factories that make and
export goods to the U.S. and
other foreign countries don't pay
taxes on their raw materials and
machinery. Under the President's
request, maquiladoras would
have to pay the normal 16 percent
sales tax on their raw materials
and request a refund of that

money when they export the final
product. This is an effort to take
away fiscal dependency on oil.
Mexico collects fewer taxes from
its citizens and companies than
almost any other developed
country.
Daniel Fitzgerald, Treasure
of the Calexico Chamber, said
that this if this is passed, it will
reduce Baja California's GDP by
3.2% according to some analyst
and it will be a reduction in their
growth since Baja's growth is 5%
a year.
Fitzgerald also mentioned
how another one of the concerns
in Mexico is that people will
come to shop to this side of the
border. However, Fitzgerald that
this could cause an increase in
border waits and would restrict
the cash flow of the Mexican
consumer that would come to the
Imperial Valley.

Romero is working on having a
joint meeting with the Mexicali
Economic
Development
Commission to talk about binational issues including the tax
reform.
The meeting will take place
at the second monthly chamber

Mains School Mural
Restored With Alumni’s Help

Mains Elementary School
recognized one of its alumni last
week that is helping restore the
school mural.
Early Friday morning, students and teachers gathered
before the 35 year old mural at
Mains Elementary and give
thanks to its alumni, John
McJunkins.
McJunkins volunteered his
time to restore the mural in the
summer and spent every day
painting the middle of extreme
weather, said Mercedes DuronFlores, teacher at Mains
Elementary. She explained to the
students
present
how
McJunkings one day went to talk
to the administrators and asked
them if he could work on restoring the mural. Administrators
accepted and he began to work on
that the very next day.
Duron-Flores commended
McJunkins for his hard work and
said he was a great example for
the Mains students.
McJunkins said that this was
something he wanted to do to and
give back to the school he attended.
"This is for everyone to
enjoy." He said.
He is a graduate of Calexico
High School Class of 2013 and
will be attending Arts Institute in
San Diego to study culinary arts.
He was presented with several
gifts and a financial assistance by
Mains staff now that his attending the school starting this week.
He will come back when he has
free time to finish the rest of the
mural.

Fireball Run Comes To El Centro, Heads West

The 2013 Fireball Run passed
through the Imperial Valley this
past Saturday, September 28, in
El Centro at its town square. The
run is a race filled with geographical trivia but it also serves to
keep awareness for missing children.
"It’s about the story of 40
teams as they embark upon an
epic adventure," said J Sanchez,
Executive Producer.
Sanchez explained that these
teams are playing a "life sized
version of trivia pursuit."
"All the trivia is based off of
host destinations like El Centro,"
said Sanchez.
The race had just gone
through Mesa, Arizona before
stopping in El Centro, the races
starting line was in Longmont
Colorado and it is scheduled to
end in Riverside, California.
"A Fireball Run is an 8 day,
14 destination 2,500 mile event,"
said Sanchez.
Sanchez stated that they’ve
had thousands of people from all
over the country to come out and
see this event, he also mentioned
that they have 1.7 viewers online.
"Each team here is representing a missing child from their
home town region, there’s a decal
of the child and the stats of the
child on the sides of the vehicle
and they get posters to distribute," said Sanchez.
Sanchez noted that to date,
they’ve aided in the recovery of
41 missing kids.
"First of all it’s exciting, I like
driving, I like traveling, I like
competition but most importantly
I like to help all my teammates
here find some of these missing
children," said Jon McBride,
Retired Navy Captain and NASA
Space Shuttle Pilot.
McBride loves El Centro, as a
pilot in the 60’s and 70’s, he used
to frequent this area a lot he considers this "a very special treat."
"I really have admired your
new facade here, to where you’re
fixing up and repairing and making it look really nice.”

Castro Answers Slur Charge At Meeting

Tuesday's Calexico City
Council meeting saw the fallout
of last week where people spoke
about the alleged racial slur made
by one councilman at the end of
the session.
The City Council Chambers
were packed last Tuesday night
with
the
supporters
of
Councilman Luis Castro and others asking for his resignation or
face a recall process which is
now being worked on by a group
of residents in Calexico.
Castro read a statement during his portion of Council comments denying what happened
last week. The statement was
passed around
the Council
chambers before the meeting to
the members of the audience. "I
am falsely accused of having
insulted Mr. Benny Horton at the
conclusion of a council meeting.
This did not happen and I categorically deny it ever happened."
He said.
"I have never in any moment
used any word to slur or under
value Mr. Horton. This can easily
be proven by reading the minutes
of this meeting. At the conclusion
of this meeting I was in the company of my wife, my son and various other persons assisting the
meeting. They are witnesses that
I never spoke a word against Mr.
Horton." Castro said in his statement.
"In my service to this city as
well as in my private life, I have
respected all persons. All persons
whom I have dealt with and personally know me know that these
accusations are unjust and false."
He ended.
People like Calexico resident Socorro Juarez reminded the
Council that they are a community and residents pay taxes to have
good representation and said she
was ashamed of what is happening with the City. He asked the
Council to end all the fighting
and start working for the community and let Luis Castro do his job
as a councilman.
Ben Horton took the podium
and spoke of the definition of
character. Horton mentioned that
the allegations are true but said
that the cover up was worse than
the act. Horton concluded saying
that Castro should resign from
the Council.
Maribel Padilla also asked
Castro to step down from the
Council and responded to the
statement that Luis Castro passed
around before the meeting denying that he attacked Horton.
Padilla pointed out that the incident happened after the meeting
so there were no minutes taken.
"Mayor Hodge, you voted to
remove Maritza Hurtado to heal
the City. "Then do your job and
remove Castro now." Padilla told
Hodge.
Marlene Thomas, former
Calexico resident, said he has
known the Castro family for
many years and stated that Luis
Castro is not a racist.
Various members of the community echoed that the Council
should focus on getting things
done in benefit of the residents
instead of fighting with each
other. Councilwoman Maritza
Hurtado said that it's very sad
what the City is going through
and asked Councilman Castro to
consider what people have
expressed.Mayor Bill Hodge said
he wants to focus on the issues
and have an agenda that focuses
on the needs of the people.
"We should be held at a high
standard and I condemned any
racial slur against anyone." He
said. Hodge said he believes in
the 14th Amendedment and
expects that due process is made.
Hodge expressed on his
Facebook page that the City
Council would not be the authority to be punitive to Councilman
Castro. He said that citizens are
the ones to take action on this and
not the Council as a whole.
Talent Show This Saturday

This Saturday is the second
annual
Calexico's
Talent
Extravaganza where the most talented people in the Imperial
Valley will compete and the event
will help a good cause.
The event was created last
year in order to raise funds for an
annual event hosted by the
Calexico Police Department
called Kids and Badges. Every
December, Calexico police take
underprivileged kids to Walmart
and give vouches to kids to buy
toys for Christmas. Calexico
Police Sergeant Victor Legaspi
said that in order to raise more
funds for this program they
decided to make a talent show
and have all the proceeds support
Kids & Badges. Legaspi mentioned how thanks to what was
raised last year, they were able to
take fifty kids to Walmart and
were very happy to buy their
toys. The Calexico Police
Department is going on its 10th
year of hosting Kids and Badges.
The Department can only host a
limited amount of children every
year and this event will help
bring in more funding to be able
to host more children at this yearly holiday event.
The event was a total success
thanks to the talent of the partici-
pants and celebrities such as
Nathan Kress and Daniella
Monet from iCarly.
The winner of the first talent
how was Soprano Natalia
Lozano. This event helped her get
more exposure for her incipient
career.
"Well, honestly it was an
amazing experience, a lot of fun
and overall a good feeling
because it was singing for a good
cause." Lozano said. "Ever since
I participated last year, I have
gotten recognized at small events
and people have wanted me to
sing for them like crazy! So overall, it was a win-win situation,
and just so awesome to be a part
of." She said.
This year's judges will be
Actor Chris Butler, Ricardo
Chavira
from
Desperate
Housewives, and Terrell Tilford
from One Life to Live.
Calexico's
Talent
Extravaganza will take place this
Saturday at the San Juan Diego
Parish Hall. Doors open at 5:00
p.m. and show starts at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $20.00 and tickets can
be purchased at Kiki Camarena

Commerce, and Calexico Police

Brawley Council Extends Allied Waste Contract, Includes Street Sweeping

The Brawley City Council
extended the city’s contract with
Allied Waste for an extra ten
years at their meeting on
Tuesday, October 1, 2013.
The meeting, well attended
by Allied Waste staff and
employees, along with members
of Teamsters-affiliated unions,
were on hand to support the
extension.
In all, the city will save just
over $400,000 per year thanks to
the extension, not including a
lease-to-own deal for current and
incoming equipment and other
agreements. The savings will
benefit the city’s Streets enterprise fund.
According to Brawley Public
Works Director Yasmin Arrelano,
$400,000 is enough to fully rehabilitate one extra street provided
the base and concrete layers are
solid.

operator will be retained by the
city and moved to another job
within the Streets department.
The extension agreement
sprouted from a discussion about
Brawley street sweeping costs at
a meeting in early September.
In the city’s informal look at
alternatives to the city provided
service, Allied Waste offered
street sweeping services for free
in return for an extension.
Allied Waste had three years
left on its current contract with
the city. The price lock for street
sweeping would last throughout
the entire length of the deal, bar-
ring annual adjustments through
the consumer price index.
While some council members
had concerns about the length of
the extension, all were in agreement that the positives of dealing
with Allied Waste outweighed the
negatives.
“One benefit,” said council
member George Nava, “is that
we will lock down this price for a
long time.” The suggestion was
that knowing the price would
also help during budget time.
It was not known when Allied
would begin sweeping Brawley’s
streets.

Local Agencies Host Job Fair At The Imperial Valley Mall

The Imperial Valley Mall
hosted the Youth Job Fair aptly
named "Job Seekers" this past
Thursday at the food court within
the IV Mall. The event featured a
plethora of local businesses coming together to hire either seasonal or fulltime employees to their
respective businesses.
" It’s a collaboration between
the Employment Development
Department, Arbor of Imperial
County,
Imperial
Valley
Occupational Program, One Stop
and the Imperial Valley
Workforce Development Office,"
said Martha Naya, Program
Director.
Hundreds of people showed
up to this event in hopes of being
hired on the spot and to hand out
some resumes to employers.
Naya stated that some of
these recruited employers would
be hiring on the spot to start as
early as the coming week.
"I’m very happy with the
turnout both from employers and
the participants outside," said
Naya who expected quite a few
participants.
The participant lines started
at the entrance by Cinemark and
went around, surrounding the
grassy area on the east side,
wrapping around the side walk
towards the Eastern side of the
mall.
According to Naya, over 31
employers took part in this event
to spread the word, seeking new
employees for the season, other
employers are opting to hold on
to resumes should they ever have
a need to hire or replace someone.
"This is the third year that
we’ve been doing this, as a col-
laboration between all the agencies," said Naya.
"I feel very excited and I feel
very accomplished because I
wasn’t sure about the outcome,"
said Madelyn Tabarez, 17, El
Centro.
Tabarez was the first participant hired at this event, she was
hired by Aeropostale where she’ll
be working in the kids section of
the store.
This was the first time,
Tabarez had ever applied to work
anywhere and this will be her
very first official job.
MADELYN TABAREZ, 17, WAS the first person to be hired at
this year’s job fair, she will be working at Aeropostale.
HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE flocked to the Mall this past Thursday
with resumes prepared on hand in hopes to find employment.

Brawley’s “never say die”
attitude continues to lead them to
victory, this time dominating the
Gila Ridge Hawks of Yuma to the
tune of 27-6.
Brawley was helped by two
touchdowns
from
Issak
Comparan, one from Ross Rubio
and one from Nico Aguirre.
Remington Campbell was successful on all but one extra point
attempt.
The Brawley Wildcats (4-1)
have a bye this week, but play
against the Calexico Bulldogs at
Warne Field on October 11.

Southwest Eagles 41Yuma Criminals 28
The
Southwest
Eagles
rebounded from their big loss
against the Holtville Vikings on
September 20th to defeat the
Yuma Criminals 41-28 in Yuma
last Friday.
Southwest’s Nigel Rabb
scored four touchdowns while
quarterback Edward Romero
delivered three touchdown passes
during the game. The recipients
of Romero’s touchdown passes
were Rabb, Wade Seitz and
Esteban Urias.
Like most IVL teams, the
Eagles (2-3) have a bye on
October 4 before traveling to
Imperial for their season opener
against the Tigers on October 11.
Game time is 7 pm.
Coachella Valley Arabs 21 Calexico Bulldogs 7
The Calexico Bulldogs could
only manage one early touchdown against the Coachella
Valley Arabs, losing 21-7 in
Thermal, CA last Friday.
The Bulldogs’ only score
came off a 55-yard punt return by
Alberto Valdez in the second
quarter. Unfortunately for the
Bulldogs, the Arabs managed to
keep Calexico from the end zone
the rest of the game.
After a bye week, Calexico
(3-2) will play their first IVL
game at Brawley’s Warne Field
against the Wildcats on October
11. Gametime will be at 7 pm.
Santa Fe Christian Eagles 31El Centro Spartans 2
It was a very lackluster night
for the Central Spartans last
Friday in Santee, California as
the Spartans only managed one
safety in the second quarter in
their loss.
Three interceptions from
Central quarterback Sergio
Osuna, two of which were
returned for touchdowns, did not
help Central.
Central (2-3) will have a bye
on Friday before heading to
Blythe on October 11 to face the
Palo
Verde
Yellowjackets.

In what could only be
described as a mismanaged
schedule, the Palo Verde
Yellowjackets played against the
Indio Rajahs in the first of two
games this week on Tuesday,
October 1in Indio.
Palo Verde managed to score
six touchdowns against the
Rajahs in their victory on
Tuesday night.
The Yellowjackets (2-2) compete in their second game this
week against the Holtville
Vikings tomorrow at Ed Birger
Field. Palo Verde then hosts the
Central Spartans on October 11.

San Ysidro Cougars 34 Calipatria Hornets 18
The Calipatria Hornets will
start their Manzanita League season after taking a tough loss
agsinst the San Ysidro Cougars in
the south San Diego County city.
While Jamal Thomas broke
300 yards in receiving and rushing and scored two touchdowns,
the Hornets could not score in the
first half and only managed three
touchdowns without extra points
or two-point conversions.
The Calipatria Hornets (2-3)
have a bye this weekend but will
host the Vincent Memorial Scots
in Calipatria on October 11.

A large dog is in the neighborhood roaming around through the
alleys scavenging and exploring.
The caller states that the dog was
knocking over trash bins and
making a mess behind his house.

First Calexico Farmer’s
Market Set For Sunday

After months of planning, the
first ever Calexico Farmers
Market will take place this
Sunday at Crummett Park.
City of Calexico along with
Imperial
County
Health
Department, Calexico Chamber,
and Mi Calexico, are organizing
the first ever farmers market in
Calexico that intends to give people an option buy produce from
local vendors and make the community stronger.
For many months the possibility of having a Calexico
Farmers Market was being talked
around some members of the
community of the council members of organizing a Farmers
Market. The idea was implemented and was decided to implement
a pilot program for Calexico.
Committee
member
Christopher Gomez Wong said
that Sunday's farmers market will
have produce vendor, local business selling fresh food, vegetables, arts and craft, music and
more. He also mentioned that
aside from buying fresh produce,
people can learn how to make
healthy and nutritional food
choices.
A presentation was made to
the Calexico Chamber of
Commerce this past Thursday by
Wong and committee member
Jessica Yocupicio.
Wong said that the following
Farmers Market could be placed
at different areas such as
Nosotros Park and Downtown
Calexico that brings more foot
traffic to the area.
"Come and have fun to support local groups and business
people and enjoy a good time
with us."
The event will be in
Crummett Park from 10 a.m. to 3
p.m. the first Sunday of every
month, beginning Oct. 6. Anyone

New TV Shows Make For Interesting
Viewing: Murphy’s Law Returns
THE NEW TELEVISION
SEASON IN STARTING UP
and I actually got a chance to see
some of the new shows.
Our favorite for the first week
was “The Crazies” with Robin
Williams and Sarah Michelle
Geller paying father-daughter
owners of an advertising agency
in Chicago.
The comedy was fast and slick
in the Williams’ improvisational
style. And Geller worked perfectly as his straightman as they went
to create a new commercial of
Mcdonald’s. It was refreshing to
see an actual brand name instead
of something made up as the
main client.
Williams, of course, saves the
day with an idea that brings in
Kelly Clarkson as herself and we
get treated to some actual vocals
along with the comedy sketch.
It was a half-hour that went by
too fast and will definitely have
me tuning in again.
On the other hand, “Mom” with
Allison Janney was a turn-off
almost from the beginning. It had
a built in laugh track and you
could almost see the laugh
machine operator turning the
dials to bring in hoots and guffaws at every ridiculous utterance.
This looks like it might have had
potential, but with the canned
laughter the show was little more
than a repeat of all the other sitcoms on the air.
“The Blacklist” with James
Spader was a highly touted one
hour cops, robbers & spies series
that has Spader turning himself
over to the FBI as a master criminal about to blow the whistle on
his fellow no-gooders.
He, of course, needs a good
female partner and singles out an
FBI agent to be his go-between.
there was plenty of violence and
fast moving action in the two
episodes I saw. And lots of running. and car chasing. And gun
pointing.
this show has the potential to go
several ways. However, the way
it is headed, it will be another
“Bones” or “Castle” or”Mentalist

So far 2013 has not been a good
political year for Calexico.
You, the citizen that keeps
informed about city issues, already
know that Calexico is in a political
crisis at this moment with infighting, hidden agendas, and no clear
vision of where the City is going.
The toxic atmosphere at every City
Council meeting is affecting collaboration between the Council members, city staff, and the community
as a whole. Meeting after meeting
we see more resentment and division between the members of the
governing body.
Calexico has never been perfect
when it comes to politics but there
has been deterioration in City politics unlike people have ever seen.
Lets us now review the current year
in Calexico politics and what could
be the consequences if this nonsense
does not stop.
And that is the topic of my
October column.
in no time at all. The story lines
are better than the standard TV
fare, but the scripting is weak and
the characters, except for Spade
and the girl, come across as bumbling bureaucrats who couldn’t
catch a cold. I’ll keep watching
for awhile. I hope the story lines
improve as well as the character
development.
It’s doubtful, though. TV goes
for conformity over content
every time.
TELEVISION HAS BECOME
SO FRAGMENTED that it is
hard to keep up with the programming on all of the networks
and new stations. Seems everybody is getting into the TV scene.
Some shows can run for years
without you ever being able to
see them.
Others you probably wouldn’t
want to see again anyway.In the
good old days when I was growing up we had three networks and
a local TV station and that was it.
Series ran for 39 weeks, not 15 or
20. And summer was always rerun time. These days all of that
has changed and you need a
scorecard to find the shows you
want to watch. Plus some of the
networks repeat a show several
times during the week making it
even more confusing. That’s why,
even with more staitons and more
shows on the air, it is becoming
more difficult than ever to find
something to suit your tastes. You
need to check you newspaper’s
listings for what’s on in advance
or take the chance of not finding
anything new at all.
I think my age is showing. Bring
back the good old days!

neighborly as it used to be!
Calexico Meltdown
Let us start in January after voters of Calexico chose Joong Kim as
Calexico's newest Councilman. He
was still on the school board but
Kim did not resign to his post and
kept both seats for six months. Kim
was the first person in the history of
the City of Calexico to be on the
Calexico City Council and School
Board at the first time a cost thousands of dollars to the CUSD legal
department.
Then there were changes in public safety as Chief James Neujahr
was removed from his job this lead
to the hiring of a new police chief.
Unfortunately, there was a lot of
concern about the process of the hiring of the new police chief and the
whole thing sadly ended in controversy. The council appointed Chief
Pompeyo Tavarez and he is now in
charge of the Police Department for
years to come.
Afterwards, Mayor Maritza
Hurtado submits a complaint filed
against fellow Council members
Hodge, Kim, and Castro for allegations of sexual harassment and discrimination. Weeks later, Hurtado
gets demoted as Mayor, eighteen
months after the removal of Luis
Castro as Mayor in 2012.
Now the City faces the threat of
being kicked out from the Joint
Powers Insurance Authority because
of some of the points I already mentioned. So what's next for the City of
Calexico? When does it end?
Last week there was another
controversy that is putting the City
in bad light. This column will come
out on Thursday and I'm writing this
on Monday night. Government has
just shut down as of this writing and
federal legislators are still negotiat-
ing. I expect a large crowd at the
Tuesday meeting calling for the resignation of Luis Castro and people
supporting him. How will the situation be handled? I will know that
after the Tuesday meeting and I will
gladly report on that. It will not be a
good meeting. Are we having a
recall election next February on top
of the other two scheduled ones in
Calexico for next year? We shall see
about in the coming weeks and
months.
Aside from the threat of being
ejected from the JPIA, this kind of
"Circus" (like a fellow colleague
wrote about Calexico recently) will
discourage future investors and
business people to come and work in
Calexico. Now that the City will see
growth with a new Outlet Center, a
new Olympic swimming pool for

The Holtville Vikings Shut Out The San Luis Sidewinders, 49-0

The Holtville Vikings faced
off against the San Luis
Sidewinders this past Friday at
the Holtville High school. The
Vikings managed to shut out the
Sidewinders, 49-0, playing a
strong game of offensive while
keeping the Sidewinders at bay
with their strong defense.
"We played a great game, our
kids came out and executed the
game plan flawlessly," said Keith
Smith Jr. Head Coach.
Smith Jr. said that it couldn’t
and has never been possible without the other coaches as well.
"This is our first year playing
San Luis, we’ve never played
them before, we figured it’d be a
competitive game," said Smith Jr.
who is proud of his team and
their performance tonight.
According to Smith Jr. the
San Luis Sidewinders have an
enrollment of 2,600 students
which is a lot bigger than the
Holtville High School’s. Based
on these numbers alone, Smith Jr
was ready for a tough game.
"We thought that they’d be
pretty tough, so we prepared
accordingly," said Smith Jr.
In true classic Viking fashion,
even at half time when Holtville
had a significant lead over San
Luis, Smith Jr. told his kids that
they were going to come out as if
the score was 0-0.
This game allowed the
Vikings to try new things and
have other players get a chance to
get more field time while giving
their veterans a break.
In this game, the top rushing
player was Esteban Muños with 9
carries and 56 yards completed.
On the receiving end, Esteban
Pacheco came in with two receptions at 22 yards in total.
Clayton Bowler came in first
with 152 all purpose yards for
the Vikings, he was followed by
Muños with 56 yards.
The top scorerof the game
was Bowler with 3 touchdowns
with a total of 18 points.
The Holtville Vikings are
now scheduled to face off agaisnt
the Palo Verde Yellowjackets at
Blythe. Kick off for this game
begins
at

pm.
The
Yellowjackets are currently 2-1,
coming off a win versus Desert
Hot Springs.

Commerce held their annual
awards mixer on Thursday at the
Barbara Worth Resort. The Mixer
was attended by community
members, businesses, City
Council Members, Chamber
Board and Directors, family and
friends.
Long time Holtville resident,
Jerry Brittsen was the recipient of
HOLTVILLE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE President Victor

the 24 Carrot Award. Brittsan’s
accomplishments are vast and
extremely varied. He served on
Holtville’s City Council long
enough to have served as mayor
three times, was a Public Works
supervisor in 1992, purveyor of
the Al Bahr Shrine Camp for
three years, and the treasurer for
Al Bahr Camp Week for 10 years.
He also served in the De Anza
Search and Rescue, is retired
from the Navy, and has served on
the chamber for several years.
Currently, Jerry is part of the
planning commission for the City
of Holtville and is heavily
involved with the Holtville
Farmers Market and Holtville
Community Garden.
After the award ceremony for

People always complain about
why Calexico has the representatives they have and not "good" ones.
Easy, and that is sneak peak of my
November column, there are candidates that don't know how to run a
political campaign. Period. I will
expand on that more next month but
as I stated before, the City is in dire
need for young fresh faces that have
a bold vision for a better Calexico
and not serving their personal needs
or vendettas between them.
Calexico is more than that and we
can achieve better things. What will
the immediate future hold for us?
Only God knows.
There been some request by citizens saying that this council needs
training and team building workshops. They are right. I would suggest for them to get the Dale
Carnegie training. People have
asked for this council to avoid their
self interest and egos and work
towards the common goals that benefit the community. They are right.
But while the five individuals continue to sit there, I wouldn't hold my
breath.
SDSU Hosts Low Income Workshop

San Diego State University students had a workshop this past
Friday to encourage and give advice
on how to improve in the path
toward getting their education.
The Office of Educational
Opportunity Programs and Ethnic
Affairs is committed to supporting
first-generation, low-income students through innovative outreach
and retention programs that encourage them to persist towards the goal
of a university degree. About 30 students attended the workshop Friday
where they participated in different
dynamics that explained to them
how get more involved and seek
counseling services though this program.
Brian Spencer, EOP Counselor
from the San Diego campus, said
they came over to support the local
EOP program and work with them
and help them reduce the anxiety in
coming to a new environment and
work with the personal issues they
have that challenge them while getting their degrees.
"Students need to reflect on
what is their motivation is and begin
the outreach to their campus.
Students should find the assistance
on the first year to make their university experience a good one."
Spencer said.
Andres Ruiz, Social Science
Major, said he liked the interaction
between them during the workshops
and said he liked what the Dean said
that they are a family and have support from everyone.
Adrew Arevalo, who is a
Liberal Studies Major, said that he
learned about the resources SDSU
and how to take advantage of them.
"What I learned the most about
his workshop is that we are all a
family and we can help each other in
many ways." Arevalo said.

should he return.
BACKYARD RULES:
The caller has just gotten out of a
physical fight with a subject in
the backyard. He didn’t state
what relation he had with the
unknown subject, but it was stated that he refused to leave; the
caller was not injured during this
ordeal. The caller was counseled
and advised of his options, he
was asked to call back should the
other subject return.
SCARED STRAIGHT:
The caller’s nephew has turned
up again to ask for money though
the caller is certain that he has
stolen an Ipod base from him.
Since he turned up the Ipod base
has gone missing, though the
caller has no evidence to hold his
hunch but he would like his
nephew to be removed from his
home. The nephew was escorted
off of the premises, the caller was
advised of his options.

A male subject who appears to be
in his late 20’s was around in the
neighborhood looking into the
caller’s windows, the caller
believes it is her ex-boyfriend.
Though the subject has never
been violent, these sets of actions
are creeping the caller out a bit.
She was advised to obtain a
restraining order, the caller stated
that she would comply.

HOLTVILLE FIRE CHIEF Alex Silva coordinated his team during this latest

In what was supposed to be
their toughest pre-season contest,
the Imperial Tigers ran over the
Olympian Eagles 58-17 last
Friday, September 27, at
Shinnosuke-Sampson Stadium.
The Tigers, led by standout
Royce Freeman, missed only one
extra point in their rout of the
Eagles, a Division I team in the
CIF-SCS playoff system.
The game began with the
Tigers quarterback Chris Carter
faking a handoff to Freeman,
allowing Carter to score from 27yards out. This was followed by
Deibed Lara extra point.
Olympian would follow with
a 31-yard field goal before
Freeman scored the first of five
touchdowns. At the end of the
first quarter, the score was 13-3

left in the half, Freeman took a

of minutes later, Freeman scored
on a 2-yard run and the Tigers
added to their lead with a 26-yard
field goal from Lara.
At the half, the score was 3710.
In the third quarter, Freeman
added a pair of touchdowns, running 78 and 29 yards respectively. After a late third quarter
touchdown from the Eagles,
Carter capped off the night with a
69 yard run on his own.
Freeman currently leads the
entire San Diego Section with
over 1400 yards rushing, almost
double of his nearest competitor.
Freeman is also just over 500
yards shy of the all-time San
Diego Section record for rushing.
The Tigers have a bye this
week but play the Southwest
Eagles on October 11 at 7 pm in

Celebrates Anniversary

Assagio’s Ristorante Italiano,
located in downtown Brawley,
celebrated their ninth anniversary
in the city on with a special mixer
jointly hosted by the Brawley
Chamber of Commerce.
Around fifty Brawley civic
leaders, business managers and
owners gathered at the Italian
bistro to enjoy a buffet of the
restaurant’s public and secret
menu.
This was followed by a raffle
of several prizes sponsored by the
Chamber and several members.
Assaggio’s
Ristorante
Italiano has been in Brawley for
nine years at the former location
of the Adobe Hacienda steakhouse.
Assaggios offers a public
menu of Italian bistro fare,
including osso bucco, lasagna
and other types of pasta and
sauce combinations.
A “secret” menu of Japanesestyle sushi and maki rolls is also
available upon request.
The mixer’s buffet menu
included a salad, an Italian variation of macaroni and cheese,
meatballs, fried zucchini slices
and California Rolls from their
“secret” menu.

Project Padres Hosts “Fathers are
Champions” event in El Centro

The IVROP Project Padres
celebrated the end of their second
year by hosting "Fathers are
Champions" in El Centro at the
Community Center. The event,
which kicked off at 6 pm and ran
through 8:30 pm featured guest
speakers, games and food for the
entire family.
"We’re a three year grant
that’s funded through the Health
and
Human
Services
Administration for Children and
Family," said Juan Campos,
Project Coordinator.
Project Padres is a project
that is centered around helping
fathers get back on their feet with
classes, activities, and counseling.
The project also helps with
family counseling and economic
stability so that strong and
healthy families have the chance
to thrive.
"The whole idea behind the
concept is to help dads be better
providers, better fathers, better
communicators," said Campos.
This particular event, wasn’t
a graduation but rather a workshop and recruitment effort to
spread the word about Project
Padres to the Imperial Valley.
"In year one, we tried to get
things rolling along but we had a
bit of a late start, just because of
the logistics, hiring staff and
everything," said Campos who
mentioned that year two is off to
a much smoother start due to an
already concrete model in place.
"By the mid point of this
project here, we had a lot of our
goals, our outcomes of our project nearly completed," said
Campos.
Campos mentioned that
they’ve learned a lot these past
two years, they are now ready to
move onto year three, in which
should be an even smoother tran-
sition into their final phase.
The event featured speakers
like Adam Derringer Brizuela,
who is the direction of San
Diego’s Pops, a fatherhood inclusion program.
The event culminated in
games and activities for the family along with food, all of which
were provided for, free of cost to
the community.
FAMILIES WERE INVITED to come out and enjoy the presentations, games and food that were offered by the IVROP.

Kiwanis Tailgate Party

The El Centro Kiwanis club
held a Tailgate Party Fundraiser
this past Saturday at the El
Centro PAL event center. This
was their big, annual event that
featured food, prizes and games
which revolved around Pro
Football.
"We raise anywhere typically
between $15,000 and $20,000
dollars and this is how we’re able
to give back to the community,"
said Allison Carr, Fundraising
Chair Committee.
Carr explained that kid programs and/or organizations like
the Boys and Girls Club, Pop
Warner or House of Hope ask the
Kiwanis Club for aid, this is how
they’re able to give back to them.
"Every year we do our elimination draw dinner which is fun
and we do a theme, this year we
did an NFL theme," explained
Carr.
Participants were encouraged
to dress and represent their
favorite NFL team, this year the
party had a lot of support for the
Rairders, Chargers, 49ers and
Cowboys.
The event also featured
booths outside, much akin to a

the cuisine was even cooked outside.
"It’s actually one of the
fullest (turnouts) that we’ve had,"
said Carr who explained that they
usually have around 180 to 190
guests, she estimated that they’ve
easily beat 200 guests.
The main prize for this year’s
dinner was $4,000 dollars, this
isn’t counting the numerous
prizes that were available by
some of the sponsors.
RAIDERS, CHARGERS, 49ERS, it didn’t matter at the Kiwanis
Tailgate Party, a fundraiser held this past Saturday.
