Pat Hood is senior pastor at
LifePoint Church, a multisite congregation based in
Smyrna, Tennessee, with
five campuses including
Stewart’s Creek, Tennessee;
Seattle, Washington;
Bangkok, Thailand; and
Brussels, Belgium. (#6 is

Tennessee). Pat and his wife,
Amy, have five children.

GroupLife is our way of facilitating
small groups, gender-based activities and
disciple-making opportunities where you can
experience authentic community, care, and
foundational biblical knowledge by connecting
and just plain “hanging out” and “living sent”
with other believers.
In these pages of The Journey,
you’ll learn about the many opportunities to
get connected to LifePoint and how you can
become an integral part of our family. You’ll
see and hear from those “Living Sent” and the
impact Christ is making in and through their
lives around the world. I encourage you to
check out some of the things going on and get
connected. I promise, you’ll be very glad you
did. I look forward to seeing how God uses
you to impact the world.
I can’t tell you how excited I am that you’re
attending LifePoint. Our prayer is that you
don’t just attend, but that you become a part
of the family.
We want you to know that we’re not here
to simply “play” church; we’re here to be
a Sending Church. We don’t want more
members. We want more missionaries. We’re
committed to sending people who’ve been
redeemed by Jesus to live as missionaries in
every domain of their life for the glory of God.
Our goal isn’t to just get converts; it’s to make
disciples, people who have a relationship with
Jesus that is real, personal and powerful.
One of the best ways for you to grow as a
disciple and be challenged to live missionally,
is to connect with other disciples who can
encourage and challenge you.

This magazine is dedicated to informing our church family about
everything going on in the Group Life ministry at LifePoint Church. If you are
new to LifePoint, I encourage you to check out some of the things our church
family is doing and “get connected.”
We know a large church can be a bit overwhelming, but by plugging in to
some of the activities and small groups, it shrinks the church exponentially
and, furthermore, God can then put to use the talents and gifts He provided
to you to begin making an impact on His Kingdom.

Disciple: being a learner, sitting under
another as a pupil, and becoming like the
one who is the teacher.
Disciple-Making
M
aking disciples is God’s command in Matthew 28:19-20: Go therefore and make disciples of all
nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching
them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of
the age. ESV
This command is not only to share Christ with all people groups, but to help others grow to be a disciple,
more like Christ. Making disciples is part of the maturing process on your Christ-Centered Journey, and
we want to help you progress through the process.
God uses many avenues to disciple us into his image, and at LifePoint, we provide many avenues for
disciple-making on your Christ-Centered Journey. We have named eight complementary avenues that
have stood the test of time for our church body; however, this is not an exhaustive list and a few of these
avenues have multiple methods of disciple-making in them:
● Small Groups/Sunday School
● Events (Men, Women, Singles, Seniors)
● Self-Directed Study
● Service
● Classes
● Bible Study Classes
● Triads (Discipling Groups)
● Mission Trips
In the spring of 2014, Small Group leaders learned to facilitate their small group meetings through an
inductive Bible study method. This study method is more intentionally focused on Bible study, using three
questions: What? So what? Do what? These questions are designed to draw our attention and discussion
toward specific verses of the Bible.
In February 2015, we introduced a new avenue
inside the Sermon and Small Groups Campaign
“Romans, The Great Collision.” You could participate
in your own Discipling Community through the
gender-based guide and questions located in the
each week’s study. We had mixed reviews of these Discipling Communities and have made adjustments
for our next endeavor of intentionally making disciples. One of those adjustments is to help every small
group, no matter where they meet, to gain a foundation for disciple-making.
Grouplife’s guiding verse for disciple-making:
And he said to them, Follow me, and I will
make you fishers of men. Matthew 4:19
In order for people to gain an understanding of the foundational principles of
intentional disciple making, this fall every Small Group will be asked to use the same
disciple-making curriculum from Oct 11-Dec 11, 2015. We know that small group
members and small group Leaders/Shepherds desire to be more like Christ. That is
why we have researched and chosen the Real-Life Discipleship Training Manual as
our curriculum.
It’s vitally important that every participant in a small group know the necessary
components of disciple-making. Our upcoming study is a 6-week study containing
daily devotionals for learning the process of these components. The process will
cover how Jesus made disciples, what a disciple is, how a disciple grows and
how to be an intentional disciple-maker. Each Small Group Leader will receive
training at the September 20th SMALL GROUP LEADER’S LUNCHEON.

WORSHIP
We are all wired for worship. Often we direct our worship to the wrong things—career, others, ourselves, money or other
material things. We are God’s creation and He alone deserves and demands our worship: our mind’s attention and heart’s
affection. At LifePoint, we best live out the characteristic of worship through weekly corporate worship gatherings at our
campuses and through individual, private worship by reading God’s Word, prayer and other personal spiritual habits.
BIBLICAL COMMUNITY
Because we are created for community, we gather all ages into small groups for relationships built around God’s Word.
In small groups, men and women of all ages are engaged in Care Community & Foundational Bible study.
SERVICE
It has been said we are never more like Christ than when we are serving. We recognize that each person has been shaped
for service. We can’t grow without serving and we cannot serve without growing. At LifePoint, we encourage each person to
engage in two arenas of service: 1. Ministry inside the walls of the church and 2. Missions outside the walls of the church.
INFLUENCE
The influence of Jesus extends across every continent, thousands of years and billions of lives. As Christ-followers, we each
have the commission to influence our community and world as we “go” about our days sharing the love, justice and truth of

Jesus modeled and taught us to give our lives away. Generosity with our time and treasures are often the greatest

The question is
often asked, “Why
Murfreesboro?” Yes, we
are planting a church in
the belt buckle of the Bible
belt. Yes, we are planting
in a town that is saturated
by church buildings. So,
why?
First, perception is not
reality. The perception
of being in the Bible
belt with hundreds of
churches to choose from
is not all it seems to be.
The stats are staggering.
Over 80 percent of
Murfreesboroians are
unchurched. That means
that in August, when 31
thousand fans flood into
MTSU stadium, 24,800
of them will not darken
the door of a church the
next day. This is too many
people to sit idly by and
do nothing.
Secondly, God has called
us to this. Scripture is
clear to go. Though that
would be sufficient reason
enough to plant a church,
God has seen fit to give
us constant calling and
confirmation that this is
what He wants our church
to pursue. God’s hand
has been all over this
launch and continues to
overwhelm with how He is
paving the way before us.
There is no doubt that
God is blessing this
church. We have seen one
obstacle after another
become non issues. Lives
are going to be changed
and God is going to be
honored.

All too often, we men think we have to have
it all together to be the spiritual leader of our
household. What’s more, we believe in order to
raise our family in the admonition of the Lord,
we must be wholly righteous and without

blame (that whole “judge ye not lest you be

judged” thing). It’s a tall order to follow; in fact,
it’s impossible to uphold. We all know that but
that seemingly improbable pressure leads many of us to cower
with thoughts of failure – just how Satan has planned it.
What Christ does ask us to do is chase after Him, with our mistakes and all. This journey leads us to
be an incredible role model of authentic faith. And truth be told, we aren’t to do this alone. LifePoint
Church established Man Talks to be a disciple-making event that walks with the men of our church and
challenges them to be on fire for God. We men make up a community of warriors who seek to mature
along the Christ-centered journey together and shake the passivity our culture has made the norm.
Man Talks began on April 13th with our first guest speaker, sportscaster
Rudy Kalis, who shared his testimony and spurred us on along the journey.
His personal and professional approach, centered on a hard work ethic and
profound love for Jesus, has seen him become a local media icon. And, as
he put it, it’s a great platform to speak truth, share the Gospel, and be an
example of a strong Christian man.
Men, I encourage you to join us for Man Talks, an evening of fellowship,
conversation, and discipleship. It is coming up on September 14.

We desire for marriages, especially new ones,
not just to survive but to thrive. As a part of
our Marriage and Family Ministry, we offer
premarital counseling services that help soon-tobe-married couples begin their marriage started
on a strong foundation.
Develop a strong foundation for your marriage, so
that you can live sent in your marriage and life.

An on-going group that focuses on preparing
newly married couples (less than three years) for
a lifetime of marital oneness and ministry in the
context of Christ-centered community.
Our premarital class is offered 3-4 times a year.
You will be asked to attend (2) two-hour classes.
Once you have completed at least 4 hours of
counseling you will receive a notarized certificate
of completion.
We believe that strong marriages and families are
foundational to the success of The Church. This
class will focus on strengthening your marriage
through biblical disciple-making, mentoring and
support as we walk together as couples.

So why in the world would i
want to get involved in this
thing called a small group?
Why Join a
Small Group?
I
t’s an important question to answer to get to the
real mission of small groups. The Biblical stance
on small groups is rooted at the center of how Jesus
deepened his walk with those around him. Jesus
gathered with his disciples to teach them, love them,
and grow them into the spiritual leaders that would
change the world. The lives of these disciples were
radically changed forever because of the intimate
time spent with Jesus.
Jesus obviously taught through actively doing –
showing his disciples lessons to be learned through
acts of service. But he also taught through engaging
in conversation and challenging their paradigm on
issues of the day, their relationship with God, and
ultimately who He was.
By participating in a small group, you actively
receive nurturing in times when you need support.
This could be a time of crisis or a major lifechanging experience. It could be you simply need a
friend to talk to about “life things.”
In Acts 2, we see believers meeting in the homes to
discuss Jesus and the new faith they had embraced,
to care for one another, and to partake in the
Christian community with one another. Meeting in
the home was certainly a way to avoid persecution of
the times, but it was also a way to be intimate with
one another as Jesus proclaimed when he said “love
your neighbor as yourself.”
As you grow in your spiritual journey with Christ,
it is important to develop close relationships with
those who will hold you accountable, spur you on,
and partner with you in the walk.
In small groups, one of the biggest advantages is
getting deep into God’s Word and truly letting it
marinate as you grow closer to God. You gain a
better understanding of the Bible and its application
in your daily life.
The same concept applies today in our church
small groups. At LifePoint Church, we stress three
components best tended to in small groups: care,
community, and foundational Biblical knowledge.
These three components assist you along the Christcentered journey and real life change occurs as a
direct result.
What else does a small group offer? The power of
praying for one another, the opportunity for you to
show your lost friends the love of Christ in a nonchurch setting, and the opportunity to move from
being a spectator to a participant in using your
skills and gifts to serve others. There is a brand
new experience awaiting you if you have never
participated in a small group.
I encourage you to take that next step in your
Christ-centered journey today.

his team will serve alongside our missionaries at
LifePoint Brussels campus. The team will be involved
with Serve the Church week in Brussels. Serve the Church
is a ministry that was established to create cooperation
between churches by serving each other, usually by helping
churches with renovations that include basic construction
work, painting, cleaning and promotional distribution
throughout Brussels. Other opportunities during this
sending experience will involve the weekly ministry of
LifePoint Brussels. This could include Cafe Anglais (English
conversation), student ministry, refuge ministry, and
university ministry.
I went to Brussels, Belgium in
October of 2013. It was an amazing
experience learning a new culture...
Not everyone sees life and the world
the same way; and, it is very helpful
to see and learn different cultures in
order to do as Jesus commanded us,
“to make disciples of the nations.”

e will join with our partner missionary in
installing wood burning cook stoves in the
Mayan Villages of Mexico. Installing stoves and
building relationships open the doors for our partner
missionaries to continue to reach the people of these
villages. Other opportunities during this sending
experience could include ESL classes, outreach
events, and working with the Church of Community
Fellowship Maya. This is a light construction and
relationship building sending experience.

ministering to the people living in the slums (favelas)
of São Paulo, Brazil. A.M.O.’s purpose is to reach the very
poor and needy for Christ and to help them with their
spiritual, emotional and physical needs. This sending
experience will concentrate specifically on the ongoing
construction of widow/orphan homes, favela ministry
centers and other ministry centers through A.M.O.

Because of all the need of the gospel here in our own community and
having no real desire to cross the equator, I wasn't so sure about
Global Missions. However, after arriving in Brazil, not knowing why I
felt God directing me there, it wasn’t long until God showed me a need
that I could fill for his Kingdom. Seeing what global poverty looked
like really opened my eyes; visibly seeing the hand of God in the people
serving the poor was life changing. I couldn’t wait until I could return
to continue the work that is there for me. I’m excited to be returning
this week with both of my sons.

e will join with our partner missionary in
ministering to the students at Bangalore
Hospital and partnering with local village pastors
in ministering to various villages in Bangalore.
We will be a part of a time of spiritual renewal for
some 300-350 students by providing teaching,
prayer, breakout groups, and other opportunities
to minister to these students. While working
with village pastors, we will be helping with Bible
studies and worship, giving our testimonies,
presenting the gospel, and distributing Bibles.
