July 2015 CAN Cooking | Activity | Nutrition a newsletter from Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank Carry a water bottle and fill it wherever you go to keep hydrated without having to buy cold drinks. Do you want more flavor in your water? Look at the next page for low- sugar ways to spruce up your beverage. Save money and calories while you are out to eat. Order water with your meal instead of soda. Water is It! Have you ever noticed how house plants look weepy and lifeless when you forget to water them, but after a nice helping of water they spring back to life? Water is just as important for people. Every organ in our body needs water. Water helps with muscle strength and endurance. That is why dehydration makes us feel tired and fatigued. With the hot summer weather in full swing, hydration is more important than ever. Our bodies cool off naturally by sweating (releasing water). It is important to replace that water. Drinking water is the best way to quench your thirst. It is exactly what your body needs, and doesn’t have the added sugar found in soda. By the time you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated. You should drink water consistently throughout the day. If you want more flavor, fruit is mostly water. You can eat it to help you stay hydrated. Because we lose water in so many ways, you should make sure that it is in addition to (not instead of) drinking water. Check out more helpful tips to the left, and look inside for some tasty recipes to help keep you hydrated and feeling great! Eating fruit is a delicious way to celebrate summer and eat healthier at the same time! This fruit salad has mango, orange, strawberries, cherries, and mint, but you can make yours out of your favorite fruits! Here are some tips to help you make the most of your fruit salad this summer. Buy what’s on sale! When fruit is on sale, it means that it is in its peak season and a lot of it is being picked. This means you can expect to get better-tasting fruit for less money! If you are able to buy extra, you can freeze some of it to use later. Ask for Seconds at the Farmers’ Market! Farmers often have seconds of fruit available: fruit that has been bruised or blemished but is still good, even if it may need to be used quickly. Seconds cost less, but you usually need to ask for them. MMMMM.... Mint! Mint is easy to grow and zings up your fruit salad with its zesty flavor! If you know someone who already grows mint, they are probably willing to share some for you to use, and some for you to grow, too! Bananas on the Side! Bananas turn mushy more quickly than other fruits. Serve them on the side of your fruit salad and eat them all the first day to keep any leftovers fresher for the next day. Transform your leftovers! While leftover fruit salad is quite tasty, it is easy to turn it into something new. Blend it with some yogurt to make a smoothie or mix it up with ice water to make your own fruity water combo! © 2015 Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank Page 3 PRODUCE TO PEOPLE 2015 CALENDAR ALLEGHENY COUNTY SITES JUL AUG SEPT OCT NOV Sheraden 2 6 3 1 5 3 Braddock 11 1 5 3 OCT. 31 5 Homewood 11 8 12 10 7 5 Allegheny Valley 14 11 8 13 OLMBS OLMBS OLMBS OLMBS 8 10 VN-D VN-D Duquesne 9 13 10 8 12 10 McKeesport 18 15 19 17 14 19 North Side 18 8 19 17 14 12 South Side Location DEC Langley K-8 School - Cafeteria ◊ 2940 Sheraden Blvd, Pittsburgh 15204 VFD # 2 Social Hall 845 Talbot Ave Homewood-Brushton YMCA 7140 Bennett Street, Pittsburgh, PA 5:30p-7p 10:00a-12:00p 10:00a-12:00p Our Lady of the Most Blessed Sacrament (Apr-Oct) 1526 Union Ave, Natrona Heights Food Bank Warehouse (RIDC Park) 1 N Linden St 5:30p-7:00p 5:30p-7:00p Founders’ Hall Middle School - Cafeteria 1960 Eden Park Boulevard 10:00a-12:00p Pittsburgh King School 50 Montgomery Pl 15212 10:00a-12:00p UMPC South Side Outpatient Center (Jul-Sept) 25 22 26 24 MH 21 MH 19 MH UPMC UPMC UPMC 20th and Mary 10:00a-12:00p REGIONAL SITES Location JUL AUG SEPT OCT NOV DEC Johnstown 1 5 2 7 4 2 Washington 7 4 1 6 3 8 Aliquippa 17 21 18 16 20 18 Beaver Falls 25 22 26 24 21 19 Beaver Falls Middle School, 1601 8th Avenue, Beaver Falls, PA 15010 10:00a – 12:00p Butler 28 25 22 27 17 15 Butler City Farmers' Market, 205 S.
