COMMUNITY CAFÉ PROGRAM
The Senior Community Café Program provides older adults with a nutritious meal at
the Patio Café on the 4th floor of the Government Center Mondays through Fridays.
The program is funded through the Administration for Community Living with Federal
funding under the Older Americans Act. Participants can select from a variety of lunch
options for a suggested donation of $3.00 or a donation of $2.00 for breakfast. The
reduced meal program is open to anyone age 60 and older. No one is turned away for
inability to pay the suggested donation.
Visit the Senior Nutrition Office on the 2nd floor of the Government Center to purchase your reduced
meal ticket.

Bet You Didn’t Know: Independence Day
Did you know New York City has the biggest fireworks display in the United States and that three U.S.
presidents died on July 4th?
John Adams & Thomas Jefferson in 1826 and James Monroe in 1831.
Variously known as the Fourth of July and Independence Day, July 4th has been a federal holiday in the
United States since 1942, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations
goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution (1776-83). In June
1776, representative of the 13 colonies then fighting in the revolutionary
struggle weighed a resolution that would declare their independence from
Great Britain. On July 2nd, the Continental Congress voted in favor of
independent, and two days later its delegates adopted the Declaration of
Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. From 1776
until the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence, with typical
festivities ranging from fireworks, parades and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues.
