DESCRIPTION
Occupying a commanding and prominent
position on the North Wales Coast.
Gwrych Castle comprises a Grade I listed
Georgian castellated mansion in a
picturesque gothic style consisting of the
house itself surrounded by some 18 round
and square towers, bastions and curtain
walls enclosing former gardens, terraces,
a courtyard, roads and pathways.
SITUATION
With far reaching sea and coastal views
the castle is approached along a private
driveway and is set within parkland
comprising in excess of 40 acres of
immediate grounds together with a
further 150 acres (or thereabouts) of
grade II registered woodland.
[The actual areas to be conveyed with
Gwrych are as shown on the attached
copy plan issued by HM Land Registry].
A larger scale plan is available for
inspection at our Llandudno office.
HISTORY
The castle was constructed between 1819 –
1822 for Lloyd Bamford Hesketh who had a
strong influence on the design executed by a
Thomas Rickman. Adjoining walls and
towers were added between 1822 and 1853
with further extensions and alterations to the
house during the 1840’s and 1850’s. A
further substantial extension was constructed
to the west in 1914.
The property is now however derelict and in
need of complete restoration and the
immediate grounds are overgrown. It is
regarded as a sublime example of Georgian
picturesque Gothic and its Grading I listing
on the statutory list of outstanding buildings
of architectural and historic interest places it
in the top 4% of historic buildings in the
United Kingdom.
LOCATION
Facing the picturesque North Wales coast,
Gwrych adjoins one of Wales’ premier golf
clubs. It has excellent transport links to
Dublin, Manchester, Liverpool and London.
As a result the sale of Gwrych is regarded as
presenting an outstanding opportunity for
reinstatement and development.
It is
considered by Conwy County Borough
Council as one of Conwy’ s prime heritage
properties and whilst its future use has been
identified
for
tourism
and
leisure
development the council have stated that
they are willing to enter discussions with any
developer who has reasonable proposals that
would safeguard the castle and its grounds.
Any proposal however would have to
recognise and be compatible with the
sensitivity of the site as a listed building.
