Welcome
summer
2010
The team at Stratford Circus are excited
to bring you a sizzling, hot summer
season 2010. Be sure to book a cracking
meal at Circus Eats and combine it with
leading lights in literature and comedy
for a great night out! Watch out for
the free music events when Beatfest
animates the foyer and stay up to date
with the line-ups for the comedy versus
cabaret battle in Click...Click...Boom.
This summer the Circus is ablaze with
incredible work for children, families
and young people. Two hot picks include
a Stomp for the younger set - Echoa
is a percussive and energetic dance
work by Arcosm Company. We saw the
French artists perform in Edinburgh and
were so impressed we brought them to
Stratford! The second is an inventive
adaptation of the classic story Treasure
Island from one of Scotland’s leading
companies, Wee Stories, set to live
music and aimed at older children (8+).
In April we were delighted to welcome
in-residence, the UK’s leading German
Wheel artists, Acrojou Circus Theatre.
Jeni and Barney are working with
Stratford Circus and our audiences to
develop a brand new piece of circus
for schools, children, families and young
people. You can see and hear more
about their work on our website.
It’s your cultural life in Stratford, east
London! We are glad to be part of it!

you will definitely be wondering
“what the…?”
Max Somerset and Christian Lee

Each with his own legion of fans from
The Sorcerer (BBC1) and Mad Max (Sky

the best tricks up his sleeve. Expect

Award-winning and bestselling author
Celia Rees has broken her own rules
with her new book. She vowed to never
use Elizabethan England as a setting
and never to write about real historical
figures. And so The Fool’s Girl opens in
London 1601 with two characters just
about to make the acquaintance of one
William Shakespeare.
Whilst watching an open air performance
of Twelfth Night (her favourite
Shakespearean comedy), Celia found
herself asking what happens next? What
if the couples weren’t entirely satisfied
with each other? What if the troublesome
characters came back? The idea was
born and so began the plan to tell the
tale of Illyria after Twelfth Night ends.

Jackie Kay is a writer who evokes a
passionately affirmative response.
One of our best-loved poets, her
books enrich the lives of all who
adopt them. Stratford Circus is
delighted that she will be here
to read from her long awaited
autobiography, Red Dust Road, in
conversation with fellow poet, writer
and broadcaster, Michael Rosen.
An adopted child of Scottish/Nigerian
descent brought up by white parents,
Jackie’s experiences growing up
inspired her first collection of poetry,
the multi-award winning The Adoption
Papers. Her novel, Trumpet, won the
Guardian Fiction Prize and confirmed
Jackie’s reputation for exploring
delicate issues with high emotional
intelligence. Her subsequent writing
has included two works for children,
Strawgirl and Red, Cherry Red (2008
CLPE Poetry Award).

A brand new fantastical fairytale
combining dance, theatre, puppetry

is funny, dark, beautiful to look at,
and sometimes a bit yucky...akin to a

Whether performing for children in
