President’s Message
Neal Conover
We have had a break-out year at Lakeside Lab. By nearly any measure, there are
records broken and major accomplishments. Look at the reports from Chet and Jane.
There are a tremendous number of students and teachers from the local schools
“learning about nature in nature.” There are early childhood classes. There is college
level research going on in a half dozen areas. Donor support and Friends Foundation
support continues to supply important scholarships for college students attending
summer sessions. The Regents and the leadership at UNI, UI, and ISU continue to recognize both the solid
contributions the Lab makes in education of students and the community and also the recognition of the Lab’s
potential to increase its usefulness in Iowa education. It’s all good!
One more important milestone – in 2014 the Iowa Board of Regents passed a resolution recognizing the
Friends of Lakeside Lab for its accomplishments. This comes about 20 years from the time when the role of the
Lab was being questioned by the Regents and there was talk about closing this wonderful resource. This
honor is a testament to our member’s support and hard work as well has the terrific staff at the Lab.
Now as I am closing my term as President, I look back at the great progress with satisfaction but know we can
go on to do more. Lakeside Lab can make additional solid contributions in community education and research.
We can help to stimulate learning of the sciences for the best and brightest students and fulfil our role as a
field station. We should stretch to see what needs the business community has where the services of the
Universities can be delivered to Northwest Iowa. The future will be fun.

Friends Executive Director Report

It was with tremendous pleasure that I began my new position as the Friends of Lakeside
Lab’s Executive Director on October 1. Having spent the last year and a half at the Lab and
this past summer as Lakeside’s Campus Coordinator, I have witnessed firsthand the impact
the Lab has on individuals. From college courses to summer camps, Lakeside’s influence on
young lives is profound. Students are afforded the unique opportunity to study nature at its
source. Many people have returned years after their campus experience and explained that spent time here
literally changed their lives.
With this in mind, I look forward to determining how the Friends can best help “grow” the Lab. Be it through
water quality monitoring, environmental education, or continued research, I hope to facilitate greater
awareness in the lakes community as to what Lakeside has to offer. I would also like to extend an invitation for
you to contact me if you would like to know more about the Friends, Lakeside Lab, or any of the programs
outlined in this report. I can be reached at 712-337-3669 ext. 1 and would appreciate your input.

Friends Chautauqua 2014
The month of June graced us with a gorgeous evening on the 22nd
and more than 120 people attended the Friends fundraiser
benefitting programming at Lakeside Lab. More than $30,000 was
raised and the event included great food, superb music, and
fantastic conversation.
The Friends would like to extend a special thank you to the artists
and individuals who donated artwork or special gifts for the silent
auction. Similarly, the fundraiser would not have been such a
success without the generous contributions from both sponsors
and guests.

My time at Lakeside has been one of the most valuable (and fun!) experiences I have had in my time as a
student. Through my short time at Lakeside, I learned more than I have in many semester-long classes.

Notes from the Lakeside Lab Director

It has been another exciting year at the Lab! The academic and research programs have been
revitalized by new courses, faculty, and research projects, thanks to the ideas from the Friends,
Mike Lannoo and Steve Hendrix. Jane Shuttleworth’s summer camps and outreach activities
continue to flourish and expand. The Lab received a grant to train preschool teachers and
administrators again this year. Jane also developed additional learning experiences for public
school students. These new initiatives are a direct result of the Friends’ generous support of
summer staffing, scholarships, undergraduate and graduate research, new signage, and even
bikes and paddleboards.
We have been fortunate to receive funding from the DNR and Okoboji Foundation to restore portions of the lakefront
and complete the lakeshore trail. Lisa Roti oversaw remodeling in the kitchen and lounge areas of the Dining Hall and
Main Cottage, in addition to her many other contributions at the Lab.
Each of the Regents’ Universities designated an official representative to the Lab to help suggest, review, and support
the Lab’s academic and research programs. Friends President Conover invited the President and Provost of each
University to visit Lakeside Lab; we hosted President Ruud over the summer.
As in previous years, I offer my sincere appreciation to the Friends and Lakeside’s staff for their support of and
contributions to Iowa Lakeside Laboratory and Regents Resource Center.
Outreach Education Report

Lakeside’s outreach programs are supported 100% by the Friends of Lakeside Lab. Thanks to your generosity, over
fifteen hundred learners of all ages benefitted this past year from Lakeside’s outreach programs! These include
school-year programs, teacher trainings, science camps, family programs, and volunteer opportunities as well as
public lectures and forums on environmental topics. Even in the dead of winter, students can be seen
investigating in the snow and ice at Lakeside. In January, the Friends also sponsor the hugely popular People’s
Environmental Art Project (see cover photo) in which hundreds of participants gather on the ice of Little Miller’s
Bay in the shape of an animal and have their picture taken from a plane.
Academics and Research Report

The 2014 summer session at Lakeside Lab created a nice buzz around Okoboji. We hosted new faculty
and courses and continued our traditional classes with seasoned faculty veterans. Our Seminar
Speakers discussed their research interests to a packed house, with frequently over 70 Lakesiders and
members of the Okoboji community present. Lakeside faculty and staff conducted two research
projects in 2014. In conjunction with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, we used sonar
techniques to map aquatic vegetation around the Iowa Great Lakes to provide baseline measures to
assess the impacts of zebra mussel invasion. The second project assessed 137 restored wetlands in
the Iowa Great Lakes watershed.
The rigorous immersion experience of all-day classes needs to be met with an equal opportunity for students to relax. Thanks to the
Friends, Lakeside purchased a paddleboard, four bicycles, bike equipment, and a strap line.

Around the Campus in 2014
UNI President Ruud Visit
The Friends were pleased to host a reception in conjunction with the Lab for
UNI President, Bill Ruud, and UNI alumni on July 31 at Lakeside’s Dining Hall.
Over 70 UNI alumni, Friends Board Members, Lakeside Lab staff and
community members were able to mix and mingle for the evening. Dr. Ruud
spoke briefly about the latest news from the UNI campus and indicated that he
would like to see the Lakeside Lab visit/alumni reception become an annual
affair. Please stay tuned…
Cooperative Lakes Area Monitoring Project
The Friends continue to support the Cooperative Lakes
Area Monitoring Project (CLAMP), Lakeside’s lake
monitoring program. Volunteers gathered to review the
results of 2014 data at the annual volunteer recognition
picnic in September (picture left). Thanks to these citizen
scientists for their amazing commitment to our water
resources!
Coffee and Grounds
Coffee and Grounds meet each Tuesday at the Lab throughout most
of the year to work on a variety of projects from clearing invasive
plant species to helping with the Little Miller’s Bay shoreline
restoration project. A big THANK YOU to the Coffee and Grounds
volunteers for their stewardship of Lakeside’s 147 acre campus and
nature reserve!!
High School Aquatic Microbiology Camp
Nine high school students from across the US participated in this year’s
High School Aquatic Microbiology Camp (formerly Diatom Camp). Led by
scientists Dr. Sylvia Lee and Kerry Howard, these students spent a week on
campus learning about diatoms—a special type of algae—and presenting
their findings at the week’s end.
“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn,” Ben Franklin. This quotes is
very fitting for the Lakeside Lab. In no other course have I been so involved in the area of study.

Over the past three summers I have had an amazing and motivating experiences. I will say this year has been
particularly better with an improved learning and research atmosphere about the campus. Faculty, staff, and
fellow students are nearly always positive, encouraging, and ready to engage in intellectual conversations.

More Happenings on Campus
Macbride Dinner
Each year the Friends honor endowment contributors at
the annual Macbride Dinner. This year we tried a new
approach, holding the dinner earlier in the season while
summer college courses were still in session so donors
could meet Lakeside students. Almost 90 people feasted on
a terrific meal by Lakeside’s Dianna Isder and listened to a
wonderful presentation by Lakeside alum, Kylie Schooley.
Summer Interns 2014
Lakeside benefitted from the dedication and talents of Friends

Scholarships
A major focus of the Friends mission is to provide
scholarships to students. Over $40,000 was awarded in 2014
to students in the way of room and board, endowed, as well
as research scholarships. Pictured (right) are some of the
recipients of this year’s awards.
Summer Camps
Lakeside Lab and the Friends ran nine summer nature camps for 89 children in 2014.
Jane Shuttleworth, Lakeside’s Education Coordinator, led the camps for children ages
4 to 14. A new camp entitled “River Camp”, offered to older middle schoolers, joined
Project Aware on an ecological journey down the Big Sioux River. Please watch the
Friends website (www.friendsoflakesidelab.org) for details on upcoming 2015 Nature
Summer Camps.
I enjoyed my time at Lakeside immensely and am confident going back to my own
University that I made the most of this experience. From the room, to the food, to the willingness of the staff to

The State Hygienic Lab-Lakeside; 2014 in Review

When looking outside, the leaves are falling on the ground. It makes me wonder where the
year went. But that seems to be how most years go…fast. In the SHL-Lakeside Water
Chemistry Lab, much of the year was similar to previous, but a few challenging days were
always sprinkled in to keep things interesting
The Friends of Lakeside sponsored a student mentorship program again. Lauren Schwarck,
from Spencer High School, was recipient of the mentorship. The project involved
monitoring the water quality of three creeks within the Lakeside campus watershed.
The Friends funded the CLAMP (Cooperative Lakes Area Monitoring Project) program which entered its 16th year in
monitoring the water quality of Dickinson County lakes. Many lakes exhibited improved water quality with some seeing
record-setting readings for water clarity. See data at www.clamp1909.blogspot.com. Over the winter, water quality data
from the CLAMP program will be complied and reports written.
I was fortunate enough to be involved a number of times with summer classes and individual students. Several classes had
questions regarding water quality testing and career options. It was very enjoyable helping whenever I could with future
doctors, biologists, diatomists, and ecologists.
Much of the water quality testing conducted over the year was typical to past years. Eighteen methods are currently
performed at SHL-Lakeside. In 2014, Chloride testing was added. This test will improve customer service and increase
sample volumes over the years to come.
Continuing this fall, regional water labs requesting state certification from Iowa will be visited as part of SHL’s duties to
provide technical support and appraisal duties. As of July 2014, eight area labs have been visited by SHL-Lakeside for this
important program.

2014 Writers in Residence
The Friends sponsored three Writers in Residence this
year. Two writers, Rachel Arndt and Corrina Carter, were
selected for the summer sessions. Each received a three
week room and board scholarship from the Lab and a
stipend from the Friends. Daniel Cesca, chosen as the Fall
Writer in Residence, is currently in the middle of his three
month stay on campus and will also receive a stipend. In
addition to the opportunity to focus on their writing, the
authors conducted public outreach projects while at
Lakeside.

Nature Connections–Young Investigators
Thanks to an Iowa REAP CEP grant and the Nature Connections team, nearly
1000 early childhood students, teachers and administrators were impacted
by our Young Investigators (YI) professional development trainings during
the 2013-2014 school year.
YI is a high quality, three-year professional training program for early
childhood educators focused on integrating nature and the outdoors into
classrooms and curriculums. YI trains teachers in the Project Approach, a
teaching method focused on child-initiated learning that also meets Iowa’s
Early Learning Standards. During the trainings, teachers learn about the phases
of project work, how to identify topics for nature investigation, and about
student-centered teaching methods. Back in the classroom, students are taught
how to conduct investigations and how to interview nature experts.
In 2014, the YI program was honored to be recognized as one of the top early
childhood professional development programs in the United States. Our team
has been invited to present at the National Association for the Education of Young Children Annual Conference in
Dallas, Texas in November, 2014, and presented at the Iowa Association for the Education Young Children on
September 19, 2014.
Scholarship Opportunities at Lakeside
The Friends of Lakeside Lab offer a number of endowed and general scholarships for both high school and
college students each year. As part of the general category, the Friends provide room-and-board scholarships
to the first 30 college students who register for a Lakeside Lab course and have a cumulative grade point
average of 3.0 or above.
Additionally, the Friends offer six special endowed scholarships to be used on the Lakeside campus:






Charles W. Reimer Scholarship-to support a student in the Ecology and Systematics of Diatoms course
Gene Stoermer Scholarship-to support a student in diatom coursework
Jane Goodall Endowed Scholarship-to support students or visiting researchers
G. Dennis Cooke Aquatic Ecology Scholarship-to support research in aquatic ecology
Parker/Gentry Scholarship-to support students in the Conservation Biology course
John Clayton Kingston Diatom Fellowship–to support a teaching assistant in the Ecology and Systematics of
Diatoms course
