March Newsletter
We had a great time at the February meeting, at least I did. I also believe it was a very productive meeting. I was amazed at the ingenuity and
creativity of each team as it worked to create a quilt top from their kit. I
heard lots of team work, discussion and laughter throughout the evening.
Congratulations to each team and to Fern and her committee for organizing
an enjoyable experience for all who attended.
We all enjoy coming to guild meetings and it takes a large number of people
to make those meetings happen and to have the guild run smoothly and efficiently. We are presently trying to fill executive and committee positions for
next year and we have many vacancies. The guild cannot operate properly if
left to only a few people--- as the saying goes, “The more, the merrier” and the less work for each individual. Please consider whether you could participate in some way next year. Most of these positions require only a small
amount a time once a month or sometimes only a few times a year. Please
see Janet Slater if you can help out in any way.

Just a quick reminder--we have several workshops coming up and if you are
interested you should check the newsletter and at the next guild meeting or
you will miss your chance. Also as we are having Daphne Greig as our special
speaker in June, the potluck will be in May not June and that PIGS and the
Membership
President’s Challenge entries are due in May as well.

$50 registration fee due on sign up. 9:30 - 3:30 Victoria Parks Community Centre Mono Mills. This is a great
quilting technique to learn and Martha is one of the best quilting teachers that you will ever meet. This amazing
technique will allow you to quilt large quilts on a regular household sewing machine. Three variations will be
taught. Two of these techniques are done so that the finished quilt has no visible sign of being quilted in sections.
Various quilts that have been quilted with these methods will be available to see. Other places that these applications could be used will also be explored. Handouts for further reference will be available. Knowledge of machine
quilting is desirable.
Wendy Spreitzer, the 3D flower lady, who was our guest last spring Saturday May 10.

takes advantage of positive/negative design. Perfect curves and sharp points are guaranteed with this new way to
fuse. In this workshop you will create your own Give & Take Appliqué design through a series of exercises with
paper and fabric. You will also discover how to use decorative machine stitches for appliqué in the this workshop.

A Note from the Editor
It’s March, it’s cold and it’s still snowing. Our executive meeting (among many others) had
to be cancelled because of closed roads. I guess the only thing left to do is quilt! It could be
worse as we still have hydro, heat and water and haven’t lost any of these too often this
winter. My poor husband is very tired of boosting “things”, moving heaters, thawing water
bowls and blowing snow. My son who drives a CAA towtruck has had an absolutely insane
number of calls. As for me, I am working on some entries for the Queen’s Bush Guild Quilt Show (my other guild) in
Markdale on June 20th and 21st. My goal is to actually finish and show a complete BOM or tinners quilt as I have several (ok many) in various stages of completion. I expect everyone to loudly clap and cheer when I bring it to the May
meeting as one of my finished PIGS. The one I am currently working on was started in 2005 so I think it has been aged
sufficiently. At least I stuck the matching fabric and pattern in the tin. These blocks have given me the opportunity to
search out some different settings, sashings and borders and I’ve discovered that many of the quilting books that I already own do provide settings (especially those by Judy Martin and I have six of hers!) even if the book is not specifically about finishing your quilt. Now I am trying to complete this Newsletter and get packed for our trip to CHC in
Kelowna and side visit to see our son and fiancé in Calgary so I guess my blocks will just have to age a few days longer
before the great finish and reveal of the masterpiece.

Interested in attending the Inter-Guild Meeting?
This meeting will be held on Saturday March 15, 2014 at
the Ingersoll Creative Arts Centre. It starts at 9:30 and
finishes at 3:30 with lunch provided. The hosts are the
Oxford Quilt Guild and this will be a great opportunity to
meet with other quilters and get new ideas. It would be
wonderful to have a carload from our guild attend this
event. Please see Sue if you are interested in a great
day away.
The Headwaters Hospital Toys Program is looking for
small quilts and blankets for the toys coming for a
checkup in May. The quilts can be knitted, crocheted or
quilted and any size from 7" x 7" to 14" x 14" or anything in between, square or rectangular. If anyone is
interested in making little quilts for this day, please
bring them to the guild meeting in March or April. Many
thanks.

COMMUNITY PROJECTS – March 2014
Our February hands-on meeting was a great success. I hope that those who joined it found it an enjoyable learning
experience. Each group worked on a kit that contained orphan blocks, strips, and panels etc that have been donated
to community projects. Our members made great progress on creating a quilt top design and many were taken
home to be completed. We look forward to seeing the end results.
Also during the afternoon prior to our meeting, there was a great turn out of members for the work bee. We will be
meeting at 1pm on Monday, March 17; it’s St Patricks Day so wear green! If you would like to assist Community Projects in some way, please stop by the CP table at a meeting and pick up a pillowcase kit. They are quick to do.
Quilts were presented to Hospice Dufferin and a photo of some of the recipients is attached. I witnessed their gratitude on receiving this gift of time, talent & caring.
The nominating committee may approach you to take on an executive or committee position. Please consider joining the Community Projects group. Thank you to all the members who participated in the hands on night. Hope to
see you on the 17th.

The picture below shows the Hospice Dufferin Quilts and their big smiles show their feelings about our work. Thanks from everyone!
Editor’‛s Note: Moved? Change of address? Change of e-mail address? Change of phone number? It is important that
you notify membership first, then newsletter. The members of each committee are listed on page 2 of every newsletter.
And … if you have any photos, quilty stories, tips, hints, web sites you might like to share, send them to your editor (email
on pg 2) but remember the deadline which appears on every odd page of your newsletter!
Thanks, Penny

Dufferin Piecemakers Quilting Guild is 20 years old (1994-2014)
September 2008 - Steve Brown and Shelagh
Roberts did a Trunk Show of Museum Quilts.
They told us about the research being done for a
book about the Museum's quilt collection.
October 2013- DCMA display at the Quilt
Show promoting its newest book, "The Quilts of
Dufferin County, Women's Art, Women's Stories". Copies of the book are available for purchase at the museum.
November 2013 - Steve Brown giving thanks for
funding received to help cover the cost of publication. We were pleased to give a substantial
grant from funds generated by the May Auction.
"Quilting Bee" book launch, February 12th. was
held on a lovely sunny winter day at the Museum. Steve, Shelagh and Peter Paterson
(photographer) spoke about the journey that resulted in this wonderful book. Leah, as Guild
Historian, thanked the Museum for the opportunity to be a part of the process.
