hat’s been happening
this
month? Oh not
much. Just the world’s
biggest Arts festivals and a
couple of Prides round and
about. Busy, busy times.
But we’ll have plenty about
them in other pages, so
let’s look at some other
items, shall we?
In the Borders, controversy
sparked as Pastor Angus
Buchan, a South African
preacher, was no-platformed by the Scottish
Borders LGBT Equality
Forum. The 69 year old
was due to speak at the
Volunteer
Hall
in
Galashiels, as a guest for
Hope Church, an Evangelical group based in Tweedbank. The cancellation of
the event follows Peter
Tatchell’s criticism of him
during a press interview in
which he quoted homophobic remarks made by the Pastor in 2008.
This starts to get confusing. Remember Tatchell
was no-platformed by Fran Cowling of the NUS in
Feb, following his signing of an open letter in the
Observer last year denouncing the no-platforming
of Germaine Greer and others for transphobic comments, stating that we should engage in debate
and that “You do not have to agree with the views
that are being silenced to find these tactics illiberal
and undemocratic.” So it seems bizarre that he
should be the inspiration to deny a stage to someone whose level of homophobia is no greater than
most churches in this land. I can’t tell who is noplatforming who any more. Is it better to deny
someone else the right to speak if they say something you find abhorrent? Do you then deny other
the right to contradict and try to educate them?
It’s exhausting to think around.
We stop for a moment and give thought to those
who perhaps have priorities in life other than
cabaret (just because I don’t understand doesn’t
mean I can’t empathise). There is a sub-culture of
footballing and watching others football, apparently. Equality Network in partnership with the
SFA have launched a campaign addressing homophobia on the terraces. The ad featured in matchday programmes across the SPFL Premiership
including Hearts, Celtic and Rangers games on 6th
and 7th Aug. Equality Network are encouraging
anyone who wants to help their club be more inclusive to participate via

For those with an interest in alternativelyshaped balls, Scottish
Rugby has also signed up
to Equality Network’s
(they do get about!)
Sports Charter. The five
principles involved are as
follows:
1.Take steps to actively
involve LGBT people in
sport and visibly support
LGBT inclusion and
equality.
2.Challenge homophobic
and transphobic behaviour and ensure a positive and welcoming
sporting environment for
LGBT participants.
3.Develop policies and
practices that are inclusive, informed by a better understanding of the
issues and barriers for
LGBT people and by taking advantage of training.
4.Work to further include trans people in sport by understanding the differing needs for trans participants and
begin to reduce the barriers which prevent trans people
from taking part in sport in their acquired gender.
5.Strive to make continuous improvements to greater include LGBT people in Scottish sport
If anyone needs me I’ll be sitting on my backside sipping
a Costa Rainbow Flat White (priorities, darling) and eating
a doughnut.
In other competitive sports news, we’ve not mentioned
gay marriage for about ten minutes. Well, the scores are
in from last year and National Records of Scotland have
disclosed that over 1,600 same-sex marriages were conducted in 2015. In comparison, there were just 1,400
Catholic alt-sex weddings in the same timeframe. Humanist ceremonies peaked at nearly 3,400 - many of
which will have been our lot throwing their pink pound
around.
To wrap things up, we’d like to express support and love
to Scott Agnew, who this month revealed his HIV status
in an interview with the Daily Record. He told of the experience of getting his results, the sense of discovering
more value in life as well as his hopes and thoughts on the
future. He’s just completed a full Fringe run at The Stand
in Edinburgh with his one-man show “I’ve Snapped My
Banjo String, Let’s Just Talk”. Our respect and adoration
to him for
speaking up
and working to reduce the
stigma of
an HIV positive diagnosis.

H
ard to believe that the
summer’s end is in
sight, I write this as we
enter the last week of the Edinburgh festivals season when
the city and indeed our scene
venues are packed to capacity
in a wonderful explosion of
culture. It’s become something of tradition in our city for
things to go rather quet in the
first part of Sep as we return
to normal and the visitor numbers decrease but there is still
much to see and do on our
scene so let’s have a quick
round up.
All the scene venues enjoyed
mega busy festival seasons
and you may still have a
chance to enjoy some of the
performances taking place in
CC Blooms before the curtain
falls on August 29th. Post the
curtain call, Fri nights at CC’s
continue to be fun for all with
Hip Hop on the first floor and
Ikandy in the basement with
music styles to suit all. Also
the Queen of Edinburgh Drag,
Alice Rabbit, following a busy
fringe season returns to her
regular Rabbit Hole slot. All
that, plus some tasty food and
drinks offers makes CC’s the
place to head for a on a chilly
Sep evening.
Planet has kept the pre club
party going during the festival
and will continue on into Sep
with the highlight being Thu
nights when the £100 prize
quiz and karaoke on offer coupled with regular drinks
promo’s makes it the best way
to kick off your evening.
Edinburgh
dùn eideann
Speaking of pre club, Habana
should be firmly on the list,
with banging tunes and drinks
a plenty and fabulously stylish
new look, many a late evening
can be enjoyed in the company of the regulars therein. If
clubbing is on the cards, head
for Chalky’s for all the fun.
With Ministry of Cheese being a
highlight, what weekend of
fun is complete without a visit
to Chalky’s. If you’re interested
in joining the team at Chalky’s
they’re on the lookout for new
staff. If you’re interested.
check out their Facebook page
for details.
This Fringe season saw the
25th anniversary of working in
collaboration of Pleasance
Courtyard and Waverley Care
- a partnership which has seen
thousands of pounds being
raised. This momentous event
was marked with a special reception as well as the annual
comedy gala. The work that
Waverley Care does in offering
support to those with HIV and
Hep C along with tackling
stigma and education is invaluable. You can support Waverley Care this Sep by taking
part in a special Come and Sing
the Sound of Music. This is your
chance to take part in a special
choral performance on 17th Sep
2016 at St Cuthbert’s Church. For
more information and to book
go to
 www.waverleycare.org.
Looking slightly beyond Sep,
Bearscots’ annual Bearscotfest
takes place from 13th-16th Oct
at various venues. The news hot
off the press is that all advanced
weekend tickets are completely
sold out. But there are a few
tickets left for the Sat night at
the Caves event check out
Bearscots.org.uk for more details.
Coming up on 17th Sep is a
brand new LGBT night at the
Mash House on Guthrie Street
with the launch of Glitz & Grime.
There will be two rooms with
top DJ’s spinning the tunes, so
be sure to drop by. Check out
Facebook even for more info.
Finally, if you’re looking to chill
out following the festival madness, head for Café Nom De
Plume for the best in food and
drinks or if pub grub is what’s
wanted, wander up to The Regent for a pint or two of real ale
and tasty bar meal. There are
also drinks and snacks a plenty
and great quiz fun for all available in The Street!
So there we have it, another
month rounded up, it’s been a
wonderful Aug with our venues
packed out - let’s keep the momentum going into the autumn
Whatever you choose to do
enjoy it and stay safe.
Until next month,

cotland’s largest showing of
LGBT Pride took place last
weekend, where thousands
took to the streets of Glasgow. Pouring rain did nothing to dampen the
spirits of everyone marching for our
continued visibility, showing our
strength in numbers and above all
else, doing what we do best…sharing
love! It’s truly moments like the
march on Sat that make you understand how far we have come and
why we have to keep going. So to
everyone who marched, proudly…
Pride in Glasgow belongs to you.
Glasgow Green played host last
weekend to Pride Glasgow’s show
featuring a cast of talented local
artists such as the fabulous Reba
Martell, May and Robert Miller and
many more. Headlining Sun was girl
group Stooshe! Its nice to know that
Pride Glasgow is now a massive
profit making enterprise, presided
over and led by Chief Executive Alistair Smith and they sure are splashing
the cash on fabulous acts to entertain the crowds of Glaswegian Pride
goers.
Free Pride also took place with a
more activist and rebel spirit driving
its energies, so a
huge well
done to all
who took
part! Some
of the
floats were
just fabulous;
Speakeasy,
Tesco and
Saltire Thistle sponsored by
Underground
were all
huge assets to the
March,
which
made it
feel like a
party to which everyone was invited.
Someone mind me kids… Kerry Katona took to the Riding Room stage
on Pride Sat, which I’m sure was a
fabulous show! With her salty patter
and big boobs I’d imagine she would
feel right at home in Glesga!

Polo and AXM obviously simultaneously stowed out over pride weekend, while the homos sweat glitter
and dance like no one is watching,
big shout out to all the DJ’s, staff and
management to both venues for
working so hard over Pride! You all
looked fantastic!
The Waterloo had a week of Pride
events which included DJ Carmen
fresh from the Flying Handbag in
Blackpool, a huge Retro Party with
DJ Paul on Pride Sat (with a reprise at
Sun lunchtime) and an appearance
from the flamboyant Ross Alexander!
And, of course the place was jumping
on Pride Sun for Christeen’s Karaoke
Capers.
Underground saw off this year’s
pride the way we always do, by
singing our hearts out, dancing our
arses off and drinking like fishes! It’s
a real joy to perform for our customers and I made sure, hangover induced as I was, that everyone left
feeling good and proud! So until next
month, say goodbye to Pride the
event, but don’t forget to wear it,
everyday of your life, be proud of
who you are and what you overcome…now everybody say LOVE!

elcome to another edition,
as I write this late on a Thu
evening the biggest cultural
event in the world namely the
Edinburgh Festival season is well
underway and despite some truly
awful weather it appears that
thousands continue to flock to this
unique event and for all fans of the
Fringe be sure to go to

views and news, also keep an eye on
other festivals including the EIF and
the Book Festival to name but two,
but for now let’s get to this month’s
round up of reviews!
Panti does it all, from smiles to tears.
Let’s just hope Panti will grace our
shores again before too long! Long
Live Panti!
PANTI: High Heels and Low Places,
Traverse Theatre Edinburgh, Run
Ended
5 Guys Chillin’ Review:
This explosive piece of verbatim
theatre takes a look Chem Sex and
the many guys (especially in our larger
cities) who host chill parties which
inevitably become little more than
non stop sex orgies where protection
is often thrown to the wind.
PANTI: High Heels and Low Places
Review:
Panti Bliss the acclaimed Irish drag
queen, who rose to national fame
following an infamous appearance on
the Irish chat show programme The
Saturday Night Show where she
dared to tackle the homophobic
contingent in the Irish media head on
- turning her into a YouTube icon in
the process.
Following a land mark DVD (The
Queen of Ireland) and the release of
an autobiography, Panti brings her
message of acceptance to Scottish
shores in a brilliant and blistering
performance at the festival as part of
the Traverse Theatre’s programme
which itself sits on the fringe of the
fringe.
Under the make-up, Rory O’Neill’s life
has never conformed to the perceived
norms of good Roman Catholic boy,
but instead expresses himself in a
unique way to which only Panti can
give a voice. This hour long sharing
and caring session with Panti is often
hilariously funny, at turns emotional
and for all the glitter and wigs it’s
starkly honest.
Life often has many tough choices but
if we can accept ourselves and each
other for who and what we are, then
phobia or fear will have no place to
thrive. With Panti revealing her HIV
status, describing the journey she has
been on since 2014 and confessing
that her appearance on Maury Povich
was a complete send up and a free
holiday to New York made this
performance all the more engaging.
The world is a better place for having
Panti in it, and reminds us clearly why
Drag Queens were at the forefront of
the Stonewall riots, a man in heels
H
and stockings presents strength in its
multitudes and also allows a voice to
state the truth even if that truth is
uncomfortable.
Verge of Strife Review:
Rupert Brooke is for many a long forgotten post-modernist poet however
his story is a unique one which saw
beauty and charm combine together
to leave a trail of bruised egos and
broken hearts in the upper echelons
of British society.
Nick Baldock’s script is taut and
deeply engaging and truly reveals
what made Brooke tick and dispels
the myths. Thanks to Jonny Labey’s
considered and precisely executed
performance in the title role this play
was both engaging and refreshing.
Supported by a talented ensemble
and drawing on many of Brooke’s
poems and letters, this production
dove deep under the skin of who
many consider to be a flawed genius.
But for me, I was left with the sense of
a man who knew his worth - but even
though he could express himself
through poetry, he was singularly unable to express himself to those in his
life that mattered most.
If you enjoy theatre that engages the
mind, then this production won’t fail
and there is much to suggest there is
life in this play beyond the realms of
Edinburgh. With a talented cast and
production team with excellent acting
and directing in equal measure, it’s
easy to see why it’s theatre at its best.
Verge of Strife, Assembly Theatres,
Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
What sets this play apart is that it
goes beyond the cocks and nipples
and exposes the real stories behind
many of these guys’ choices- not just
in their sex lives - but in how they
came to be involved in an often
disturbing facet of sexual expression.
Tackling subjects that range from
loneliness to rape, this is a gripping
exploration of human contact and
how far a person will go for sex all the
while trying to attain the ultimate
high from illegal and indeed legal
drugs. It often makes for
uncomfortable viewing especially as
the play was drawn from interviews
and research carried out by the writer
Peter Darney and his efforts have
been rewarded with a play that
inspires by its ability to challenge its
audience.
This production will live long in the
memory. As you leave the intimate
space of C Too in the shadow of the
Castle, there are many questions still
left to answer especially the one in us
all. However would you go to escape
the bone crushing pain of loneliness
to the ultimate sexual high all the
while just simply chilling out would
appear to be the answer - or is it?
Truly unmissable theatre at its best.
5 Guys Chillin’, C Too, Edinburgh
Fringe Festival.
Through the Stage Door Review:
The Edinburgh Playhouse has played
host to many a unique musical, ballet
or rock act but its near 100 year old
history has been explored during the
Festival season in a play which crosses
over with a tour of the historic
Playhouse itself.
Writer Stephen James Martin has
developed a fun and interactive script
built around some of the characters of
the venue’s past including Albert The
Theatre Ghost who comes to life to
tell the story of the building.
The audience are allowed to take to
the stage of the Playhouse itself and
get a sneak peek at the stars’ dressing
rooms, whilst getting a decent
amount of the building’s history. This
is a fun hour’s entertainment that,
whilst not getting into too much
depth, does enough to keep the
casual theatre enthusiast more than
happy.
With a snappy pace and many a laugh,
this was truly a fun exploration of a
building that many of us only ever see
from the stalls. There is talk of the
production being revived, which
hopefully will come to fruition as it
will ensure that the Playhouse
continues to be a unique venue for the
capital city and will remain Scotland’s
Broadway!

Canada for the foreseeable future
and so I shan't be around to write the
next article. If you're interested in
writing about Aberdeen (or Dundee
for that matter), please get in touch
with the Editor, John Hein
 [email protected] I've
been writing these for over a year
now and have thoroughly enjoyed it.
Well, now that's done, all that's left
for me to say is have fun, stay safe
and take care of each other. See you
when I see you!
