About us
The United States Pakistan Center for
Advanced Studies in Water (USPCAS-W) has
been established at the Mehran University of
Engineering and Technology (MUET) Jamshoro
under the Cooperative Agreement signed
with USAID on Dec. 12, 2014 for five years. The
USPCAS-W at MUET is a state of the art and
modern applied research center. The
USPCAS-W is a world class education and
applied research center dedicated to
resolving Pakistan’s water crises through
applied research, developing specialist
human resource and technologies;
academia-industry collaboration; and policy
formulation. The centers will generate costeffective and sustainable solutions to
Pakistan’s challenges related to water and
educating the next generation of scientists,
engineers, and policy makers through
innovative academic programs in water that
are focused on applied research to solve
Pakistan’s contemporary problems. The USAIDfunded Pakistan Center for Advanced Studies
in water at MUET is encouraging and
empowering women scientists and
researchers to actively participate in applied
research to solve Pakistan’s contemporary
problems. The USPCAS-W will receive
assistance in technical issues and capacity
building from U.S. Partner University (University
of Utah).

Five-day Workshop on
Water Quality Monitoring and Assessment
December-07 to December-11, 2015
Water is fundamental for the existence of life.
Today, both availability and quality of water are
serious global issues. Drinking water sources,
both surface and groundwater, are
contaminated with viral pollution, coliforms,
toxic metals and pesticides in most parts of the
country. Water contamination is a matter of
concern for all, and especially for the people in
developing countries like Pakistan.
Drinking water sources are poorly managed and
monitored all over the country. Various drinking
water quality parameters set by WHO are
frequently violated. Different studies conducted
in the past by independent researchers,
government and non-government organizations
have all come to the same conclusion
regarding the poor quality of drinking water
throughout Pakistan. So, it is important to
independently assess drinking water sources
before use.
Hence, realizing the need of time, the U.S.Pakistan Center for Advanced Studies in Water
at MUET Jamshoro with the support from
collaborating institute i.e., University of Utah and
funding from USAID has organized the workshop
on water quality, which aims to train water &
wastewater treatment professionals, chemists,
students, faculty members & health
professionals.
Partnering Universities:
Who should attend?
Workshop Highlights
Research students having background in
environmental, biological and chemical
sciences or engineering, faculty members,
water practitioners and staff working in water
sector and health organizations can attend this
workshop.

Workshop Learning Objectives
After attending this workshop, the participants
will be able to:
 Describe the different water pollutant
groups, their fates, and impacts on human
health.
 Describe and apply the different tools,
criteria and assessment methods for
successful surface water quality assessment
and monitoring in river basins.
 Explain the concepts and principles of
analytical techniques, such as,
spectrophotometry and chromatography;
trace metals and ion detection techniques in
water; case studies and hands-on training.
 Design sustainable water quality monitoring
programmes for river basins.
 Select the appropriate water sampling
procedures; storage and preservation
methods and quality control techniques for
laboratories.
 Analyze the water quality data and
demonstrate the results effectively, such as
statistical techniques; using significance
levels in water quality monitoring and
regression analysis.
