Message from RMCC President
Ron Wheeler
Happy February! With that in mind, I remember that
this is the month of “love”. And I want to say “I love
this club!” You guys are awesome.
We are in full gear planning for the June car show,
“Unbridled Spirit.” David and Chris have been
working hard on the Website and getting on-line
registration up and running. It is now working and
you can put in your reservations at:
http://www.restomodsinreno.com/index.php/onlineregistration. This works very well. Next time you see
David and Chris, thank them for all of their hard
work. We are probably one of the only clubs that has
on-line registration for their show!

on and many places where assistance can be
used. So keep that in mind and we look forward
to hearing where you would like to serve for a
couple hours. Remember many hands make
light work!
See you February 12th for another fun filled
meeting!
All that being said, more volunteers for show stuff are
still needed. Are you interested in assisting judges,
check with Shirley Hopkins; if you are interested in
raffles, contact Linda Romeo; if you would like to
assist with parking lot detail of trailers, or show cars,
contact Darold Roy; if you have interest in assisting
with hospitality tent or the banquet, contact Rosie
Livingston. Linda is already collecting raffle prizes of
all kinds like craft items, tools, car wash accessories,
children’s blankets, toys, model cars, jewelry, purses,
clocks, watches, computer items, posters, you name it,
she’ll take it. We have a lot going

JANUARY WHO IS IT
For those who attended the RMCC Christmas party, you would know that these slippers adorn the
feet of your Editor, Sid Gesh. The Gesh’s stole the slippers as part of the party’s white elephant
gift exchange from the Romeo’s. How about those legs . . .

Interview with Dennis Romeo
One of the most prominent members of the Reno Mustang Car Club, Dennis Romeo, has just launched a new
career. For the last twenty six years he has been working with the Truckee Meadows Water Authority, currently
holding the position of Administrator of the Cross Connection Control Program. In the next few weeks Dennis
will be retiring from the Water Authority. What does he plan to do in retirement? Why he plans to work in radio
broadcasting as the co-host of one of the “Nevada Matters” radio programs. Radio broadcasting is not entirely
new to Dennis. In his younger days (a long, long time ago) as an Electrician’s Mate (EM) in the Navy, he had the
opportunity to work on a Top 40 radio broadcast for American Armed Forces Radio. After the Navy, Dennis was
involved in radio broadcasting again as a student at San Bernardino College and, while attending, also did some
broadcasting for local area stations as a broadcast intern. Dennis really enjoyed this work and hoped that
someday he would have the opportunity to do it again.
On a trip to Reno in 1974, Dennis fell in love with the Truckee Meadows and decided to move to the area.
Shortly thereafter he was able to land employment with the Water Authority. An old friend of his recently
became aware of Dennis’s residence in Reno as the result of publicity related to his recent run for the Reno City
Council and contacted him. As it turned out, this gentleman owned a number of radio stations. One thing led to
another and, through connections with his long lost friend, Dennis found an opportunity to get involved in radio
broadcasting again, this time with “Nevada Matters.” Nevada Matters is a listener-supported radio programming
that broadcasts a number of programs on local radio stations that, according to their Web site, “celebrates cultural
diversity, equality, economic justice, and is committed to our community.” In his broadcasting role with Nevada
Matters, Dennis discusses issues important to this area and often involves invited guests to the radio program.
Recent programs hosted by him include an interview with Ira Hansen on the upcoming legislative session, Hillary
Schieve to discuss City Council issues and organ transplants (herself an organ recipient), Kitty Jung on Washoe
County issues, and Ron Knect about vocational education. You can catch Dennis’s radio program live on Friday
from noon to 2:00 PM on KRNG (101.3). His program is also repeated on weekends on Fox radio (99.1).
Dennis has been a long standing and active member
of the RMCC since 1995. During his tenure with the
Club, he has served as Sergeant at Arms, Activities
Chairman, Sound System Manager, Vice President,
and President (1998-2001). He relates that back in
the early years of the Club it was struggling to stay
alive. Club membership was limited to classic
Mustangs only, membership was less than 50, and
there was no money in the treasury. With the help of
a number of dedicated “old time” members, things
slowly turned around. Dennis believes that the
major contributors to the growth of the Club were
the opening of membership to Mustangs of any year,
monthly Club activities and get togethers, and
working together on the restoration of the Nevada
Auto Museum’s ’65 Mustang.

Dennis isn’t the only member of the Romeo family that has been active in the RMCC. Linda, his wife of 21 years,
has been the Apparels Chairman, Club Secretary for 13 years, and enthusiastically involved in running the
Restomods show raffle every year. The Romeos have a daughter, and five grand kids – many of which you will see
at Club events and helping out at Restomods each year. When asked what has kept him involved with the Reno
Mustang Car Club over the years, Dennis replied that, in addition to the opportunity to meet and mix with car
enthusiasts, it is the camaraderie of the members – much like family. He also appreciates what our Club does to
support the local community.
The Romeo’s are the proud owners of two classic cars: a ’66 Mustang and a CMC replica of a ’65 Cobra. The
Mustang is a restomod; souped up 289 V8 with a C-4 automatic transmission. Most notably, the car is painted
YELLOW! When I conducted the interview with Dennis for this article, I promised him that I would not mention
that the Cobra is powered by a Chevy engine!

Tech Tip – Jump Starting a Car
Contributed by: Ron Wheeler
Hey fellow club members. I want to go over a few things with regards to jump starting vehicles and proper safety
procedures and equipment for each and every vehicle you own. The first thing I want to stress with regard to jump
starting a vehicle, is that it needs to be done with a "like" vehicle. i.e., a diesel engine should be jumped with
another diesel, a 12 volt car (which would be most of the vehicles you own) should be jumped by another 12 volt
car, a 6 volt (i.e., up to mid 50's vehicles) with another, etc. With regard to Hybrid vehicles, most need to be
plugged into a power source or refer to your owner's manual before attempting any type of jump starting.
The second thing that needs to be stressed is safety. Be sure to wear proper safety eye protection as well as gloves
for skin protection. A bad/marginal battery can cause battery acid to be splashed out of the battery or even create
and explosion of the battery.
Now let's talk about the jump start procedure: If you suspect that your battery has died, you may be able to use
jumper cables to connect your vehicle to a like vehicle. (I strongly recommend if you are driving a Ford - DO NOT
use a Chevy, you could cause more irreparable damage by doing this). But seriously you need to be certain that the
vehicle being used as the starting vehicle has a good strong battery and charging system. In addition you need to
make sure you have a "GOOD" set of heavy duty battery cables (of course, they will be in the trunk of YOUR
vehicle).
Prior to beginning, make sure both vehicles are either in Park (automatic) or Neutral (manual), have the parking
brake engaged and both vehicles have their ignition turned off. Open the hood of both vehicles and locate their
batteries.
Identify where the positive terminal on each battery is located (most commonly the positive terminal will
be indicated by a "+" or "POS" on the battery case at the terminal site). Connect one "red" battery
jumper cable to the positive terminal on the failed battery.
Connect the opposite end of the "red" jumper cable to the Positive terminal on the "starter" battery.
Attach the "black" end of the jumper cable to the "-" or "NEG" terminal on the "starter" battery.
STOP Double check that you have completed the jumper cable connections EXACTLY as outlined above before
you make your last connection. If not done properly you may cause damage to the “starter’s” ignition or even the
vehicle’s computer.
Now you are ready to connect the final end of the "black" jumper cable. WAIT, do not connect the cable
to the battery terminal on the failed battery! This should be connected to a good unpainted ground spot
located on a NON MOVING part of the engine of the "dead" vehicle.
Now that everything is properly hooked up, start the "starter" vehicle and let run for approximately 5 minutes
before you attempt to start the dead vehicle. If the dead vehicle doesn't start, leave it connected to the "starter"
vehicle while it is running for an additional 5 minutes (you may need to pull out your wallet, to pay for the "starter"
vehicles gas given the current gas prices!) When the "dead" vehicle begins breathing again, do not shut off its
engine. Leave the dead vehicle running or drive around for about 15 minutes in order to recharge the battery. (You
may want to unhook the jumper cables first!) Remember to remove battery cables exactly in the reverse order of
how they were hooked up. If the dead vehicle does not start after jumping or will not start the next time you go to
use it, call RDW for a check of your battery/charging system and/or replacement of your battery.
One way to possibly prevent the chances of a dead battery is to service it regularly. Clean both battery connections
and keep the battery itself clean. The moisture that gathers on the top of the battery can create a draw to the battery
causing it to die prematurely.

Sprint by Ford
Contributed by: Sid Gesh
As most of you know, Judi and I are the proud owners of a 1964 Falcon Sprint convertible (painted that
most magnificent color - YELLOW). When discussing our car, we simply refer to it as the “Sprint.”
Over the years I have heard people mention that Ford produced a Mustang model designated as a Sprint.
The October issue of Mustang Monthly confirms that this is indeed true and provides specific information
on each of the Mustang Sprint models.
The “Sport Sprint Special” was introduced in the 1967 model year. This car was a specially equipped
Mustang to promote the Mustang’s third birthday. Offered with both six and eight cylinder engines,
109,946 of these Sprints were produced, of which 101,419 were hardtops and 8,527 were convertibles.
Ford differentiated these ’67 Mustangs with a louvered hood with turn signal indicators, rocker panel and
tail panel moldings, full wheel covers, white wall tires, vinyl-covered shifter handle, and a chrome air
cleaner cover with a “Sports Sprint” decal.
The Sprint moniker appeared on a Mustang once again in 1972 with Ford’s introduction of the “Sprint
USA” model. This specialty Mustang featured a red, white, and blue special edition theme (that was also
shared with the Maverick and Pinto) to honor the USA Olympic team. The Mustang incarnation was
supplied as either a white hardtop or SportsRoof with blue and red trim and sporting a “USA” decal on
the rear quarter panel. The base Sprint USA package came with a matching white interior with blue seat
inserts and red piping, blue carpet, dual racing mirrors, hub caps with trim rings, and E70 whitewall tires.
A competition suspension and F60 Wide Oval tires on 15 inch Magnum 500 wheels could be added with
the “B Package.” Ford produced 6,247 hardtop Sprint USAs, 3,086 of them SportsRoofs, and 50
convertibles for a total production of 9,383.
I have to say that I was quite surprised when I read this article as I don’t recall ever seeing either a ’67 or
’72 Mustang Sprint model. With a total production number for both models approaching 120,000 cars,
you would think they would be more prevalent – or, perhaps I just haven’t noticed them before.
Nonetheless, I will be very specific in identifying our car from now on – a 1964 Falcon Sprint. Want to
learn more about all of the ’65 to ’72 special edition Mustangs? See the article “Special Editions” in the
October, 2012 edition of Mustang Monthly, page 22. Don’t have a copy of this issue? Contact me and I
will share mine with you.

New Fastener Store
For those of you living in the southern end of Reno, you no
longer have to travel to the airport or Sparks for fasteners that
the big box stores never seem to have or sell in quantities that
you don’t need.
Fastenal has opened a new store just off Longley Lane at 892
Maestro, Suite 103 (in the strip mall facing Longley). As one
of 2,500+ stores around the country, Fastenal offers its local
customers a broad core inventory of commonly used fastening
products, as well as items that are custom-stocked to meet
individual customers' needs. I stopped by there today and am
quite impressed with their inventory nuts, bolts, washers,
screws, fittings, etc. Editor
