Time
Whether the many hours of patient cutting, sewing and pressing that it takes
to make a suit or the century that it has taken to make a name and reputation;
it is time and the passage of time that has made Ermenegildo Zegna what it is
today and it is time that will continue to shape our destiny in the future.
As a family company it is perhaps easier for us to bide our time,
as a family company we have the luxury of time, and as a family company we
enjoy the privilege of being able to plan for the times ahead.
It is by considering the years and decades yet to come as much as seizing the
hours and minutes that we have today that we move forwards.
And just as over the decades past we have worked and improved upon the finest
fabrics and raw materials at our disposal, now we believe the time is right to
embark upon a journey into time itself; as we develop a range of fine timepieces,
timepieces which will tell the unfolding story of the passing hours
and minutes for years and generations to come.

Ermenegildo Zegna & Girard Perregaux
The relationship between Ermenegildo Zegna and Girard Perregaux
is a partnership between two companies that share more than
320 years of experience in their respective fields.
And as well their individual histories dating back over the generations,
the famed menswear house and watchmaker are united by the importance
that they have historically placed on the contribution made by the hands
of generations of skilled craftsmen: whether these dexterous hands are
finishing the buttonholes of a sports jacket or carefully adjusting
the balance wheel of fine watch, the ethos that guides them is the same.
But more than that Ermenegildo Zegna and Girard Perregaux
share a set of enduring values; an appreciation of quality, a sense of taste,
an understanding of discretion and dedication the pursuit of perfection.
These are the forces that have driven these two great names for centuries
and continue to direct them to this day.
But the partnership and the watches are also born out of the vision
of Gildo Zegna and the late Gino Macaluso former proprietor
of Girard Perregaux, who were friends, as well as business partners.
Monte Rubello & Oasi Zegna
Monte Rubello is a majestic peak in northern Italy’s Pre-Alps that soars almost
one and a half kilometres skywards. It is the dominating feature
of the region’s landscape and it finds itself within the bounds of the Oasi Zegna,
the name given to 100 square kilometres of the eastern Biella Alps,
a natural park that has been owned by the Zegna family for generations.
The founder, Ermenegildo Zegna made it a personal mission to reforest
this area planting over half a million pines.
And when the Zegna family was elevated to the nobility of Italy
by King Victor Emmanuel III, as the scion of local landowners who had lived
and worked in the shadow of the mountain for centuries,
it was fitting the family chose to be known as the Counts of Monte Rubello.
Over the years the family’s association with the land has deepened,
as successive generations have made their contribution to protecting
and improving this unique location for the future:
the building of the breathtaking mountain road, the Strada Panoramica;
the establishment of a mountain resort to be enjoyed by the workers in the
Zegna wool mill; the construction of a hotel; the restoration of historic
buildings and the continued planting of trees and plants have all helped
preserve this beautiful landscape as it is handed from one generation
of the family to another, each generation treating the precious parkland
as a palimpsest on which to write their story.
The Oasi Zegna project was started almost 20 years ago with the aim of studying
and protecting this mountain area and it is a mark of the family’s pride
in the haute horlogerie timepieces made in partnership with Girard Perregaux,
that these watches now share the name of this noble mountain.
Origins
In 2010 the house of Ermenegildo Zegna celebrated its centenary
and today the name is known around the world, synonymous with stylish
and high quality menswear, luxury wools and precious fabrics.
But long before they became famous in the world of fashion,
the Zegna family were known as landowners and wool merchants
in the north of Italy and as early 1727 the official land registry
of Trivero lists Giovanni Maria Zegna
and his brothers as one of the notable landowning families.
It is from Giovanni Maria that numerous branches of the family descend;
among which Ermenegildo Zegna the firm’s founder was born.
Although the family had been active in the wool trade for centuries,
Ermenegildo’s father chose a different métier,
a métier particularly apposite given the partnership with Girard Perregaux.
Michelangelo Zegna was a watchmaker and the family archive
still has a watch he made; open the caseback and there on the savonette,
the hinged metal cover that protects the movement,
is engraved the legend ‘Angelo Zegna Baruffa Trivero’.
Now today his son’s name and his great grandchild’s name,
Ermenegildo Zegna, is to be found on the dial and caseback
of a new line of timepieces, as his family returns to watchmaking.
Monterubello Watch Collection
Monterubello watches are the quintessence of tasteful discretion: elegant enough for the most
formal of occasions and yet designed to be worn and enjoyed every day, they are a combination
of Zegna’s timeless style and Girard Perregaux’s passion for detail and precision.
Inspired by the 19th century pocket watch made by his great grandfather, Gildo Zegna,
CEO of the group, wanted to create a luxury timepiece that captured the eternal qualities
of the greatest watch design; and to realize this he turned to Gino Macaluso,
the legendary owner of Girard Perregaux, who sadly passed away in 2010.
The first watch that the two men created together was the slim and classic calendar watch
launched to honour the centenary of Ermenegildo Zegna in 2010 and which was warmly
received by watch connoisseurs and Zegna customers alike. Encouraged by the success
of this watch, made only in a small series of 100 pieces Gildo Zegna decided to launch
a permanent collection of timepieces that embodied the characteristics of both
Ermenegildo Zegna and Girard Perregaux.
The result is the Monterubello collection, a capsule collection of pink gold and white gold
timepieces available in two models: Monterubello Solo Tempo, which shows the time and date
and the Monterubello Chronograph. Both equipped with Girard Perregaux movements and
sharing design cues such as etiolated leaf hands and cursive Arabic numerals; the watches have
their own strong identity rooted in the proud heritage of Ermenegildo Zegna and Girard Perregaux.
“The collaboration with Gino Macaluso was truly extraordinary,” says Gildo Zegna,
“Right from the beginning with our first watch in 2010, the Zegna Centennial Limited Edition,
I knew that he was the right companion on this journey and the designs that he and I worked on
for the Monterubello Collection are a continuation of that same spirit of excellence and elegance.
Today the Monterubello project is continued with Gino’s sons Stefano and Massimo
and the launch of the first Monterubello Collection is dedicated to the memory of my friend
Gino, without whom this would not have been possible.”
