AROUND TOWN
We received some additional
good news last week resulting
from our efforts to secure additional grant funding for the folks
in the new Water District #10
(Stafford District #9). The Town
has been approved by NYS to
receive a State and Municipal
Facilities Program (SAM) grant
in the amount of $100,000. The
Dormitory Authority of NYS
administers this program. It has
the potential to lower the user’s
annual debt service fee by more
than 10%!
We received our historic marker for the Marion steam shovel
and will be setting that up soon.
Most likely, the placement will
be temporary as we move toward
site/steam shovel renovation in
the future. This sign is courtesy
of the generosity of the Pomeroy
Foundation.
The walking/bicycle trail on
the old Lehigh Valley RR bed
from West Bergen Rd. west to
Buckley Rd. is now open for use.
Please adhere to the following
regulations- no trash/litter (carry in/carry out as with all town
property), no motorized vehicles
of any kind (walking /bicycles
only), stay on the RR bed only
(posted private property lines
each side of the trail). At some
point in the future, it is hoped
that this portion of the trail will
hook up with the other developed
portions of the Lehigh Valley
Trail, which also connects to the
Genesee Greenway Trail.
Save the date - Friday, August,
14, is LeRoy night at Dwyer Stadium. Out hometown Muckdogs
take on Lowell (Red Sox), as
Staten Island, the Yankees Farm
Club, do not visit Batavia this
year (this year it’s even easier
to root for the Muckdogs!). Like
last year, we will be recognizing
at least one youth baseball team
and there will be several prizes
for holders of the LeRoy tickets
(ticket info to be announced in the
near future) courtesy of our local
merchants.
Hope everyone had a great Independence Day and look forward to
seeing you next weekend Around
Town at the Oatka Festival!

Notes
Notes - July 1, 2015
Our new President, Tony Gugino opened the first meeting of
the Rotary year with the Pledge
of Allegiance followed by the
invocation and the Rotary Four
Way Test.
We welcomed guests Douglas
Erwin, son of Mary Margaret
Ripley and Jeff Gephart, husband
of Christine Gephart.
Martha Bailey reported on the
R.E.A.L (Rotary Excited About
Literature) book give-a-way. The
donation monies will go to Polio
Plus, the extra books went to the
veterans and many people walked
away with lots of books for summer reading. All in all, a success!
Look for us again next year.
Sign up sheets went around for
the Rotary Hot Dog Stand at the
Oatka Festival. Mary Young is
organizing a group of Rotarians
to participate in The Relay for
Life. Kim Cox reported that The
Interact and Early Act clubs are
planning a can drive to help support Relay for Life.
Some awards were announced.
A Past President’s pin was presented to Randy Vink, Two
District Awards were given to
the Club, one for our 75 Year
Anniversary and the Light House
Award for “Lighting Up Rotary”.
Larry Boylan presented Tim
Moag a Paul Harris Award for
his decades of service to Rotary
and The R.E.A. Milne Scholarship fund.
In honor of Canada Day, Randy
Vink and Jim Ellison led the group
in singing Oh Canada! It pretty
much became a duet since the
rest of us had no words to follow.
President Tony had all those
that missed the Installation Dinner stand. They were each fined
for missing the dinner meeting
and fining session. Traditionally
the incoming president chooses
where the dinner fining will be
donated. This year President Tony
selected LCCP.
Bob Boyce was fined for the Sabres new draft pick, Tracy Ford for
bike riding, Kim Cox for a smooth
graduation ceremony and for obtaining some grant money. Bob
Carlsen didn’t know what it cost
to attend a Yankee baseball game
and had to pay. Scott McCumiskey paid for his wife’s article in
the paper while Christine Gephart
had to pay up for celebrating her
15th Wedding Anniversary. Since
Mary Young is vice president of
the Library board she was asked
about the doings there and paid
for the privilege.
The program was Christine Gephart’s birthday talk. She grew up
in Lima, NY and knew at a young
age that she wanted to be a social
worker. After college, marriage
and after moving around a bit she
and her family settled in LeRoy.
She and her siblings recently inherited the Clair Bear’s Ice Cream
Shop at the east end of LeRoy.
Christine is enjoying sampling
the different flavors and ice cream
specialties. It’s a tough job, but
someone has to do it.
After the raffle, President Tony
rang the bell and adjourned the
meeting.

LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - JULY 12, 2015
Faurquier County Gold Mine - The LeRoy Connection
by Lynne Belluscio
We were traveling our way
back from a museum conference
in Colonial Williamsburg on
Route 17 through Virginia, trying
to avoid the traffic around Washington, when we saw a sign for
the “Monroe Park Gold Mining
Museum.” Always interested
in obscure museums, I quickly
found a spot to do a U-turn and
we turned into a well-kept park,
with picnic tables, and playground and a few newly painted
museum buildings. There was a
bunkhouse, an assay office and
a mess hall.
came harder to locate and more
sophisticated equipment had to
be used. Strip mining scarred the
land and the use of cyanide and
mercury had to be used to extract
the gold from the ore.
What caught our eye as we
were driving by the museum
were these huge balls. They are
called “hornet balls” and they are
a mystery. They were found at a
gold mining site not far from the
museum and it was believed that
they were used to grind up the
ore to get to the gold. They are
hollow and have a “port-hole”
Although this was not the site
of an actual gold mine, this was
“The Official Gold Mining Interpretive Center for the Commonwealth of Virginia.” The exhibits
were very nice and we learned
that gold was discovered in
Virginia very early in the 1800s.
It was imbedded in hard quartz.
In Fauquier County there were
about 18 gold mines and between
1832 and 1861, over 100 mining
companies were established in
Virginia. The Franklin Mine in
Faurquier County, excavated a
300 foot shaft in pursuit of one
vein of gold and it produced
1.2 million dollars worth of
gold. Early mines employed
experienced miners from Wales,
England, Germany, Scotland
and Ireland.
Everything came to a screeching halt during the Civil War,
when Union soldiers destroyed
any mines or equipment they
came across. After the war, the
gold mining in Virginia slowly
recovered. The gold ore was extracted by deep shaft mining and
“placer” mining which utilized
water sluices. But the gold be-
opening on one side. It is believed that ore was placed inside
of the balls and then using some
type of machine, they were rolled
around. But even then, it’s hard
to understand how the ore could
be easily removed. But there’s no
question that they catch your eye
as you’re driving along.
So what is the LeRoy connection? Well, in one of the exhibit
cases in the Monroe Park Gold
Mining Museum, there is a
display of items that might have
been used in a mining camp, and
there in the middle of the case is a
2 ounce bottle of Fenner’s Cough
and Cold Syrup “free from any
opium, morphine or narcotics.”
It was compounded by S.C.
Wells & Co, Le Roy, NY. “Successors to M.M. Fenner.” The
Wells Company purchased the
rights to Fenner’s medicines in
Fredonia, in 1914. The medicines included Dr. Fenner’s
Golden Relief and Dr. Fenner’s
Family Ointment.
In a note in our files, it also
mentions that when Wells purchased the Fenner Company, he
also acquired one of Fenner’s
best salesmen, Glen Vanderpool, who worked for S.C.
Wells until his death in 1949.
The S.C. Wells Company
had a long history beginning
in 1866 when Schuyler C.
Wells bought a drug store
on Main Street called Medical Hall. But Wells was
convinced the money was
in manufacturing the drugs,
so he built a large factory,
equipped with steam power
and stamping presses. By
1873, the business was well
established and in 1877 he
built the four story factory on
Church Street, now known as
the Pennysaver building.
After Schuyler Wells died,
his son, Carl Wells took over
the business, and it was under
his tenure of the company
that Fenner’s was purchased. Fenners Bottle Made in LeRoy.
He also acquired a number
of other well-known patent
medicines. His last purchase
was in December 1955 when
he purchased Rough-OnRats from E.S. Wells (not
related) of Jersey City, New
Jersey. Rough-On-Rats was
the oldest registered trade
name in rodenticides - - the
dead rat on his back. (As an
additional note, each year for
at least the last twenty years,
I have taken a Rough-OnRats T-shirt to this museum
conference and it is sold in an
auction to raise money. Everyone who has purchased the
Rough-On-Rats shirt wears
it to the auction for a group
photograph. This year, the
shirt raised over $100).

World Class Learners ...
Empowered to Succeed
July 2015
Dear Parents, Guardians, and Community Members,
The 2014-15 school year has come to a close. It has been a fantastic year with many accomplishments and goals being met.
This year I am proud to say that we saw successful passage of a $12.7 million capital improvement project, recognition of
the Wolcott Street School as a National School of Character, and Le Roy Jr./Sr. High School named to the 5th Annual AP
Honor Roll. Le Roy was named to the Best Communities for Music Education for the 8th year in a row and we had numerous sectional championships, including our football, cheerleading, and indoor track teams. Several individual students were
recognized for their efforts in the classroom, on the stage and on the playing field. In addition, we celebrated with 92 seniors
as they proudly became the “Graduating Class of 2015.” It has been a great year!
On the business side of things, the district has finally received state aid support equivalent to the 2008-09 school year, helping
us to close the gap between growing expenses and revenues, and allowing us to reduce taxes for the coming school year. Two
contracts have reached positive settlements as well. In regards to the contractual settlements, we are pleased to announce that
the school instructional day has been expanded. This will cause for a slight change in our school day starting on September
2, 2015.
The school day for the elementary school will run from 8:45 - 3:15, while the secondary school hours will be from 7:45- 2:15.
This change allows for a uniform school day of six and one half hours for all students, which is quite typical for most schools
in the region. While the time changes may seem slight, the additional minutes will allow us to provide the equivalent of close
to seven additional days of instructional time over the course of the year.
Please plan ahead!! These changes will impact busing routes and times! It is the Le Roy Central School Transportation
Department’s goal to have these routes out to the public by the last week of August, but we need your help. Please make
sure that information for your child’s (children’s) transportation needs is current and up-to-date. This may require you to
complete a new transportation form and return it to the Transportation Department as soon as possible. In order to meet the
deadline of mailing bus routes to residents by the last week in August, new forms and changes will be accepted by the Le Roy
Transportation Department through Monday, August 3, 2015. After this date, the routes will be built from the information
that is currently on file. Without this form, we cannot guarantee that we can schedule your transportation plans by the first
day of school on Wednesday, September 2, 2015.
You can find a transportation form in this newsletter, on the Le Roy website at www.leroycsd.org or at any of our school
offices. The Le Roy Central School District Transportation Department prides itself on providing safe and efficient transportation for our students, but this cannot happen without accurate and timely information. It takes many hours to design the
routes and to compete the mailing. It is absolutely essential we have this information in
order to ensure that our routes are correctly designed and that all students are assigned in
the system. We urge you to take a minute and complete this form as soon as possible. We
also ask that you encourage your friends and neighbors to complete their forms as well.
Thanks so much for your support. Working together, we hope to ensure a smooth transition to the 2015-16 school year! Have a restful and relaxing summer!

Wolcott Street School - Year End Celebrations!
Last Day of School Send Off – WSS Style
A long-standing tradition of saying goodbye remains strong on the
last day of school! As students load the busses for the very last time
this school year, staff line up and wish them well! Bubbles are blown,
cheers are shouted and hugs are given as students leave the building,
load the busses and exit the parking lot. Happy summer to all!
Tenured Staff Members
Wolcott Street School added three new members to our
family! Mrs. Jennifer Triftshauser, Mrs. Jessica Legere, and Ms. Danielle Mooney
have been granted tenure by
the district. We are very proud
of their accomplishments and
look forward to their continued
successes.
Here’s to the Class of 2021!
Our annual 6th grade awards ceremony was held during the last
week of school. Numerous awards were bestowed upon students
for their participation in programs, excelling in the classroom and
outside the classroom, spelling, geography, math, writing, art, music,
Rotary, PTSO, etc. One of
the special awards given at
the ceremony is the Brett
Merica – Golden Heart
award. This award was established in 2007 by Gerry
and Barb Merica in memory of their son, Brett, who
was a 6th grade student in
2005. Brett’s enthusiastic
personality, loyalty to his
family and friends and respectful attitude towards his teachers and
classmates made him a role model for his peers. He was pure of
heart and spirit with a smile that would brighten even the darkest
day. In memory of Brett, a 6th grade student is selected by the teachers who demonstrate all the qualities that Brett represented. Brett’s
mom, Barb, and his grandmother were in attendance at the ceremony
to present Ethan Riggs with this wonderful honor!

Mini-Veggie Gardens
are Growing!
As we enter the 2nd year
of our PEP grant, we are
continuing to learn more
about life-long fitness and
teach- ing students about
making healthy choices when
it comes to eating properly!
Mini-vegetable gardens were
planted as part of the grant
and will be utilized in the fall
during our lunches! Home
grown goodness at its best!
We look forward to more
food challenges throughout
the year.
End of the Year,
Good Character Assembly
We love to close the school year by celebrating all the
good character that students display day in and day
out throughout the year! This year, students were given the opportunity to create an anti-bullying song to
be used on our school busses. Staff then voted on their
favorite song and the winner of the song contest was
asked to create a video too! The winners of the contest
were Maveric McKenzie, Jack Tonzi, Parker Dowell,
and Ryan Shirley. These boys were the brains behind
our first ever school bus song and video! The “We
Will Stop You” video debuted at our assembly to a
roar of the student body! Next, our very own Wolcott
Street School band featuring Mr. DeLuca, Mr. Nordhausen, Mr. Caparco, Mrs. Dechant, Mrs. Buckel, and
Mr. Greene jammed to songs including, “We’re Not
Going to Take
It”, “American
Bully” and
“Good Bye”.
Students
were singing
and cheering
along with our
band. This was a great way to celebrate our accomplishments school-wide!

High School Happenings!
Class of 2015 Honors Night!
June 25th marked the Class of 2015 Honors Night. We handed
out over 50 awards worth over $50,000 to our well deserving
students. We welcomed many presenters who came to award
their scholarships; including Gary Scott’s brother, David. A
highlight of the night was hosting members of the Class of
1965. The Class of ‘65 led the Class of 2015 into the auditorium and came up onto the stage for a special greeting. Carol
Queal addressed the audience and gave a message to the class
of 2015. We would like to congratulate all of our seniors who
received an award and were recognized for their efforts!
CLASS OF 2015
THEY MADE IT! Congratulations to the
Class of 2015! June 28th marked our 124th
Commencement at Le Roy! A packed auditorium enjoyed an incredible ceremony
and a class act by our graduates. This year’s Valedictorian,
with a GPA of 99.03, was Danny Weaver. Danny will attend Lehigh University where he will major in Biochemistry
(Pre-Med). This year’s Salutatorian, with a GPA of 98.96,
was Emily Graham. Emily will be attending Daemen College in Amherst, NY this coming fall where she will major
as a Physician Assistant.
We want to thank the seniors for their accomplishments
and contributions to our school community. We have made
many memories this year in the classroom, in competition,
through activities and performances. Most importantly, the
students have pushed themselves in the classroom to open
many doors down the road. Once a Knight, always a Knight!
