Tricked Again at SNS
Sunshine Nursery School’s Pre-K children set their leprechaun
trap and used their “leprechaun lookers” to keep and eye out for
the tricky little green guys. Once again, those sneaky leprechauns
made a mess of the classrooms, ate the skittles from the trap and
made a quick escape. Better luck next year Sunshine!

LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - MARCH 22, 2015
The D & R Depot Restaurant has changed a lot over the last 24 years. We’ve grown in ways that I would have never
imagined. I’d like to publicly thank some of the many people that have been instrumental in helping the D & R to grow.
Our managerial staff has the hardest jobs around - they have to put up with me 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. From
3 am text messages to holiday phone calls, our managerial staff always come through for our customers.
• Tammi Conte, Depot Lead Server – Tammi oversees the restaurant servers and her job is to make sure that our
guests’ experiences at the D & R are top notch. Her high standards and ‘lead by example’ approach make her
invaluable.
• Steve Boundy, Double L Rental Manager – Steve effortlessly manages our tent & rental company, Double
L Rentals. Steve handles a staff of 7, a huge inventory of tents, thousands of tables & chairs, and much more.
I couldn’t begin to think about running Double L without Steve’s expertise.
• Shaina Czudak, Barista Manager – Shaina runs our new coffee shop in LeRoy, Barista’s @ 58onMain. Shaina
has had to start from scratch and do a lot of ‘on the job training.’ Shaina’s personality and commitment to customer service is helping to make Barista’s very successful.
• Tammy Saeva, Rentals & Wedding Coordinator – Tammy runs our Event Management wing at the Genesee
Country Village & Museum. Tammy’s ability to multi-task and her sincere love for her customers has helped to
make the GCV&M one of the busiest wedding and event locales around.
• Jennifer Gangi, Sean’s Assistant - Jenn handles the Double L reservations, catering orders and oversees my
schedule. Handling a very busy office along with filling in where needed in the restaurant and catering departments really shows how versatile and organized Jenn is.
We have several long time staff members who have been with us through the many ups and downs – Amy Fagan (24
years), Patti Rubino (13 years) and Cindy Reschke (about 10 years) form a strong core staff for the Depot to build upon.
Additionally, we have some newer staff (all at least 2 years) that make up our great team – Steve Kelso, Patrick Gonzalez,
Helen Chapell, Alicia Beardsley, Katelyn Wickson, Jake Swiatowy, Peter Constantino & Julie Harper Cutcliffe.
While I do have a great managerial staff, most of our success needs to be attributed to my partners, Nancy Nickerson
& Jennifer Valdes.
Everyone knows Nancy as the Depot’s hostess, but Nancy was the founder of the D & R Depot and has set high standards for our staff and created an excellent business system. Regardless of the topic that we’re discussing, Nancy always
approaches it from the customer’s point of view. If it’s not good for the customer, Nancy makes sure it’s not going to happen.
Jennifer Valdes is our Chef and Kitchen Director, and moonlights as my wife. Jen’s high expectations, tremendous work
ethic and terrific culinary skills is a huge part of what makes the D & R so successful. I also have to thank our daughters,
Kara & Abby, for putting up with our non-traditional schedules and crazy outings.
Lastly, I’d like to thank all of our guests, clients and customers. Whether you’re one of our large corporate catering
clients or someone that visits us twice a year at the Depot, every last thing that we have is thanks to you. We are always
humbled when someone chooses us over another company. We will continue to make sure that we’re providing you with
the best quality, best service and best products we can.
The D & R Depot dining room will be closed from Monday, March 23rd through Thursday, March 26th for
redecorating. We’ll have new colors, some new furniture and new art work to show off when we reopen on March
27th at 7 am. We will be able to take catering and lunch to go orders during our dining shut down.
Thank you for reading this letter, and for choosing the D & R Depot,
Sean Valdes
P.S. – Visit us for our all inclusive Sunday Special this week –
Roast Turkey Dinner, with soup or salad, real mashed potatoes & dessert!

Notes
Our regular lunch meeting attendance was spirited yet sparse
as President Randy Vink called
us to order.
Our guests today were LHS
Seniors Sarah Ball and Sydney
Heywood. Jane Monaghan visited
from the Perry Club and Selby
Davis was on hand to accept a
donation to Grace’s Kitchen.
Announcements about our
upcoming Board and Area 14
meeting were met with the usual
excitement. Egg stuffing for the
Annual Community Egg Hunt
will be March 28th at the Moose
Club at 9:00 am. We usually are
done in 2-3 hours. All volunteers
and anyone needing community
service are welcome! David
Grayson, Mary Margaret Ripley
and Eric Fix were called on and
paid up for missed meetings while
Tracy Ford, Phil Weise and Tom
McGinnis had more make-ups
than they needed.
Birthdays for Mary Margaret
and Tom M. were celebrated
with a fine rendition of Home
on the Range. When Tom was
again called on to thank him
for 22 years of Rotary service,
he offered up that he has more
grandchildren on the way and
that Santa would be very busy

Our fining session began with
Tracy Ford, now that she has four
licensed drivers in the family.
Rob Murray paid postage for
President Randy having to deliver
Rob’s mail. Chris Biviano paid
for violating the “sign and no
show” rule. Larry Boylan, taking
a break from Arizona to join us,
paid up for a photo of he and the
rest of the LHS Cross Country
team (circa 195?) apparently
prior to the advent of matching
uniforms. Selby Davis provided
an overview of Grace’s Kitchen
for our impromptu program.

A local college’s on-campus services.
A local bank to help them thrive.
Mark Scott, Executive Director
Campus Auxiliary Services at SUNY Geneseo
As the Executive Director of Campus Auxiliary Services at SUNY Geneseo, Mark Scott manages student services
ranging from dining, to vending, to transportation services.
“We have to be ready to take advantage of new opportunities,” says Mark. “But our previous financial partner
wasn’t paying attention to us.”
With Tompkins Insurance Agencies, Mark found the responsiveness he needed. As a result, he switched his
banking to Tompkins Bank of Castile, too.
“We can get immediate answers from them,” he says. “Tompkins will even bring us
change when we need it. What bank on the planet does that?”
Learn how Tompkins Bank of Castile and Tompkins Insurance Agencies can help your business thrive.

LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - MARCH 22, 2015
Watching For Flamingoes - April 1 and April 4
by Lynne Belluscio
As most of you know it’s time
to watch for the flamingoes. If you
have any flamingo decoys, it’s
time to put them out. The flock at
LeRoy House will be ready, rain
or shine, or even snow and will
make their appearance on April 1.
Usually the flamingoes stay
outside, but this year, since it’s
during spring break, and folks
might be looking for something
to do with the kids, some of the
flamingoes will be moving inside
LeRoy House for a scavenger
hunt. Your challenge will be to
find all the flamingoes.
One rare cement flamingo is
believed to have been made at the
Ribstone Silo Company, owned
by Donald Woodward. Another
hand-painted wooden flamingo is
just like the one that Jacob LeRoy
brought with him in 1823 when he
and Charlotte moved to LeRoy.
A very rare cloth flamingo, with
a zippered pocket, was used as
a mail pouch on the first airmail
delivery in 1928 from the Donald
Woodward Airport.
A pair of rare salt and pepper
shakers, made in China, are probably the set that Edward Augustus
LeRoy brought back with him on
his trip with Admiral Perry in the
1850s. Fragile pieces of flamingo
china will be set on the table in
the 1920s kitchen and unusual
flamingo lamps, that were used
in the former Flamingo Bar and
Grill on Main Street - - site of the
Eagle will be on display.
There is a shirt worn by Placido
Flamingo during his last concert
tour. Some of the Jell-O advertising featuring a pink flamingo will
be featured in the Jell-O Gallery.
In the garden, the Ingham University croquet
set, with flamingo wickets,
will be set up. Weather permitting, folks will be able
to play a game of croquet.
The skittles game will be
set up in the back parlor
and the table top bowling
game in the basement.
Without question, the
most unusual piece in
the collection is a genuine pink flamingo feather
which fell from the last flamingo sighted in LeRoy.
This feather was found in
a box on the third floor at
LeRoy House. It was verified as an authentic flamingo feather by well-known
ornithologist Roger Tory
Peterson. There will be
prizes and refreshments,
so plan to join us for a
historic day of fun. You’ll
never see LeRoy House
like this again - - at least
again this year.
The flamingo fandango Jacob LeRoy office.
will be held on Wednesday, April
1 and Saturday, April 4. We will
be open 10 to 4. Admission to
LeRoy House is free. (Regular
admission rates apply to the
Jell-O Gallery.)
Starting April 6, the Jell-O
Gallery is open seven days a
week, 10 to 4 (1 to 4 on Sundays).
LeRoy House hours fluctuate
depending on volunteer schedules, but will be open weekends
starting in May.

Achievements
Scott Chauncey from Pavilion and Carly Lauricella
from Le Roy, SUNY Geneseo
students, were among those presenting commitments to action to
address global challenges at the
2015 Clinton Global Initiative
University meeting at the University of Miami March 6-8.
President Clinton and Chelsea
Clinton hosted the eighth annual
CGI U meeting at the University
of Miami, which brought together more than 1,000 innovative
student leaders from around the
world to present “commitments
to action” in five focus areas:
education, environment and climate change, peace and human
rights, poverty alleviation and
public health. They also heard
from experts in various fields,
brainstormed ideas, shared best
practices and formed partnerships
in developing and advancing
solutions to some of the world’s
most pressing challenges.
The students submitted proposals to present at the meeting
through Geneseo’s Center for
Inquiry, Discovery and Development (CIDD).

Superintendent of Schools
Spring is here, but clearly
someone forgot to tell Mother
Nature!
This is a very busy time for the
Le Roy Central School District.
I hope you were able to attend the
wonderful production of “Shrek”.
This production truly showcased the talent of our students,
staff, and community members.
Congratulations, and thank you
to the Le Roy Central School
District Music Department for the
commitment and hard work that
goes into these outstanding productions year after year. At the
Wolcott Street School, students
are well into “PARP” month.
“PARP” (Parents as Reading
Partners) is an opportunity for
the school and community to join
together to celebrate and promote
reading both at home and at
school. This will culminate with
a PARP Festival on Friday, April
10th. Hope to see you there!
The Board of Education and
the Administration continue to
draft the 2015-16 School Bud-
Superintendent''s Column
get. Each year we work hard to
navigate the many challenges
set forth in this process by the
Governor and the legislators to
design a budget that meets the
needs of our students and is fiscally responsible to our community.
Over the past few years we have
had to deal with GAP elimination
adjustments (currently withholding over 8.3 million dollars in aid
from our students), a flawed foundation aid formula (that hasn’t
been properly implemented since
2009), and the addition of a property tax cap formula (which is
very difficult to explain at best).
Still, despite these challenges
we have been able to continue to
develop responsible budgets that
have allowed us to realign our
resources to make substantive
changes to our program. We have
been compliant and worked hard
to meet every mandate that has
come our way. This year, we
have not only had to deal with
these complex constraints, we
have had to build our entire
budget blindfolded. You might
wonder, what does that mean?
Each year the legislators and
the Governor release school aid
runs that give districts an approximate idea of how much aid
we can expect for the upcoming
school year. This number, along
with our property tax cap calculation, combine and provide
districts with an estimate of
revenue for the upcoming year.
As we work to develop our expenditures, we have a general
idea of what programs, items, and
personnel that can be included
in the school budget, where we
need to trim or (rarely) where we
may add. This year the Governor
refused to release these figures.
This has caused considerable
concern in the process. In addition, the Governor has tied
several reform initiatives to the
state aid picture. Essentially he
is holding districts hostage to his
demands in exchange for state aid
that is due to the public to ensure
a free and appropriate education
for children.

your concerns about this with
the Governor or legislators, I

Fortunately, we have been extremely cautious and mindful in
our planning over the past several
years and despite the climate at
the state level, we do believe that
we will be able to put forward a
well-balanced and responsible
school budget for the 2015-16
school year. The budget will be
adopted at the April 14th school
board meeting. Budget presentations will be held throughout the
community beginning in April
and the Budget Hearing will be
held May 12, 2015 at Memorial
