PERENNIALS
Acanthus mollis — Bear’s Breech
Bold architectural plant that has large deeply cut foliage. White flower spikes with dark purple markings appear in late spring to early summer for 3-4 weeks.
Acanthus generally resent being moved so plant them in a spot where they will be happy. If you would like to multiply this plant, thrust a shovel into the base
of an established plant to cut through some of the roots in the fall and wait until spring to dig up the baby plants that are produced from this process. Prefers
part shade and well-drained soils, especially in winter. Nice cut flower. Grows 3-4 ft. tall x 3 ft. wide. Tender perennial. Mulch well in winter to prevent any
damage to flower buds during late spring frost. (Zones 7-10; Heat zones 12-1).
Achillea — Yarrow
Durable plants for full sun with fern-like evergreen foliage in shades of green or gray which are topped for 3 months by large clusters of tiny flowers in an
array of colors. Cutting plants back after bloom will produce fresh crowns of growth. We recommend deadheading regularly to maintain a neat appearance
and to prevent reseeding. Tolerant of poor or dry soils. After 3 years, the centers of your Achillea may die out indicating that it is time to divide your plants

Euphorbia’s generally prefer full sun or light shade and poor to ordinary soil that is on the dry side. You can lift and divide clumps if necessary but stem
cuttings in mid-summer would a better way to propagate these plants. Some varieties self-sow abundantly so deadhead after blooming. All Euphorbia’s ooze a
milky white sap when stems are cut or broken which may irritate the skin. These plants are rarely bothered by disease or pest and are deer resistant.

separate crowns. Consider planting with dark green plants such as Asarum or Helleborus to accentuate
Lady Fern’s light green color. Grows 12-24” tall x 24” wide. (Zones 4-8)

flower. Prefers full sun with well-drained, alkaline soils. Do not spoil Gaura with overly rich soils or they will flop in midsummer. If desired, divide in spring

Heleniums are known for their extended bloom time. They resemble Helianthus (sunflowers) or a cross between Coreopsis and Rudbeckia and typically bloom

GROUNDCOVERS
Ajuga

Clump forming or spreading groundcover preferring moist shady areas but tolerating some sun and moderately dry soils. Evergreen to semi-evergreen foliage
with blue flower spikes in spring which tend to last for about 2 weeks each. Although Ajuga is relatively tough, it can rot at the base in overly wet spring soils
or in areas where they get little air circulation. If desired, divide at any time of the year. Ajuga has been known to spread by seed, so they should be deadheaded after blooming, if you are worried about them invading your lawn or another area of the garden. Tolerates light foot traffic. Deer resistant. Grows 6”
tall and generally spreads 24” wide. (Zones 4-9; Heat Zones 8-2).

ivy a better chance of surviving frost upheaval and scorching from winter winds.
helix

Pachysandra terminalis — Japanese Spurge
A traditional groundcover that does particularly well under trees where they typically need to compete for limited sun, nutrients and water. Dark evergreen
foliage with fragrant creamy white flowers in late spring for about two weeks. Optimal conditions for Pachysandra are light to full shade and rich moist soils.
At the minimum they need afternoon shade even in cool climates. If desired, divide at any time of the year. Grows 9-12” tall. Pachysandra can spread up to
18” wide but you may want to plant on 6-12” centers. (Zones 4-9; Heat zones 8-1)
Periwinkle — Vinca minor
A vigorous groundcover which prefers moist, shady areas. Blue flowers in spring and more sporadic blooms throughout the season. Tolerates some foot traffic. Grows 4-10” x 12-18” wide. Plant on 12” centers for quick coverage. Periwinkle spreads above ground so root barriers will not impede it’s spread. If desired, propagate by division during any part of the year. (Zones 4-9; Heat zones 9-1)
