CAPE VERDEAN STUDENT WAS ADMITTED TO USP VIA THE PROGRAM FOR
PARTNER UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS (PEC-G)
New friendships
I was admited to the Obstetrics program at the Universidade
de São Paulo via an agreement between Brazil and my home
country, Cape Verde, under the auspices of the Program for
Partner Undergraduate Students.
Our first days of classes were great, because we were the first
and only Africans from Cape Verde to come to study at USP/
EACH (School of Arts, Sciences and Humanities). Everyone
was curious to meet us and to learn about life in our country. I
ended up meeting most of the students in the college, and they
were all really cool, receptive, nice and friendly.
Enjoy your
exchange
program to the
max, you won’t
regret it.

Culture and Diversity
Brazil is a
wonderful
country and USP
is one of the best
universities.
I have been studying anthropology for two semesters at USP
as an exchange student. Studying and living here has changed
the way I see Brazil. I liked the university right from the outset
and here I have the opportunity to interact with people of
different nationalities, allowing me to acquire new knowledge
and broaden my worldview. Markets on weekends, “sambas”
that take place in the city, great parties, exhibitions, displays…
São Paulo is a city where you always find something going on,
there’s always something to do, you just have to stay tuned in.

Find your way around the several different Schools which make
up the university and which are located all over the state
Universidade de São Paulo is one of the largest and most
important institutions of higher education and research in
Brazil and Latin America. Founded in 1934, USP is a public
state institution (it does not charge tuition fees) and has
campi placed in seven towns spread throughout the state of
São Paulo. With its education and research activities in all
academinc fields, USP offers 245 undergraduate programs,
227 graduate programs (both master’s and doctorate (PhD)
degrees) and 888 extracurricular programs. In total, there are
about 90,000 students enrolled in 48 Schools (faculties and
institutes) which make up USP. Furthermore, the university
houses four important museums which receive over half a
million visitors per year. In addition, USP runs health centers
and three major hospitals. It also works in partnership with
Hospital das Clínicas in Ribeirão Preto and Hospital das
Clínicas of São Paulo, the latter considered one of the leading
hospitals in Latin America.

de São Paulo
Over 85% of the almost 5,900 academic staff members
are full time employees. This reinforces the university’s
commitment to achieving excellence in terms of its
personnel and in generation of knowledge.

USP’s scientific productivity totals an average of 27,500
publications per year including indexed scientific journals,
books, reports, etc. This represents a significant proportion
of the country’s output.
The university is concerned with the application of the
discoveries made within its research centers and laboratories
and their effective transfer to society in general. For this
reason many members of the USP community are in
permanent partnership with industries, companies, offices
and health centers specialized in the development of projects
and products, as well as in the application of new techniques
and technologies.

The university also plays an important role in South America,
since it attracts many students, professors and technicians
from the neighboring countries and from all parts of the
world. It is an institution that evolves rapidly in its intent
towards greater internationalization and this has been
accompanied by its ever growing visibility on the world stage.
It has signed more than 570 cooperation and exchange
agreements with important institutions in the Americas,
Africa, Europe, Asia and Oceania, and is constantly working
towards increasing this number. The university currently
receives about 2,000 foreign students per year and sends
abroad a similar number as part of its student mobility
program.

once already in Brazil or a neighboring country. Under such
circumstances, should the need arise to change the type of
visa, it will be necessary for the student to return to his/her
home country.
HEALTH INSURANCE
During his/her stay in Brazil, foreigner will be allowed to
use the services of the Brazilian Public Health System only
in cases of emergency. For this reason, Universidade de São
Paulo demands that students obtain health insurance (travel
insurance), which should be purchased in the country
of origin prior to arrival in Brazil. The insurance policy
should be valid for the entire period of intended stay in the
country. The choice of travel insurance is the student´s
responsibility.
Important!
Foreigners can use the Brazilian Public Health System only
in emergency cases.
The foreign student must purchase a health insurance
(travel insurance) before coming to Brazil.
18
After arrival
Once in Brazil, the foreign student must present himself/
herself to the International Relations Office of USP in order
to be introduced to the university and receive instructions
about the necessary procedures.
The International Relations Office staff will provide
information about:
• RNE – mandatory registration and identification of any
foreigner in Brazil. The associated document is issued by the
Federal Police with whom all visitors should register within
30 days of arrival in the country;
• USP ID card;
• Portuguese course enrollment;
• Signing up for classes;
• Student Single Transportation Card (“Bilhete Único
Estudantil”) – COSEAS;
• Homestay Program
In order to stay in Brazil, it is necessary to have a valid
foreigner’s ID card (RNE) issued by the Federal Police.

The state of São Paulo: how to reach USP campi.
Plan your stay!
Located in the southeastern region of the country, it occupies
an area of 248,808.8 km2 with the city of São Paulo as its
capital. It is Brazil’s most populous state, with 40 million
inhabitants, and it is also the wealthiest, responsible for over
33.1%* of the country’s GDP.
The Universidade de São Paulo has campi in seven cities of the
state: Bauru, Lorena, Piracicaba, Pirassununga, Ribeirão Preto,
São Carlos and São Paulo.

Bauru
The town of Bauru has its origins in the cultivation of coffee, in
the 19th century, and over the decades has received immigrants
from different nationalities. It is a medium sized town, with
about 360 thousand inhabitants*, and it is strategically located
at the confluence of important roads and rail connections,
making Bauru’s economy one of the most influential in
Western São Paulo. Its valuable historical heritage, together
with its notable level of scientific enterprise and the large
student population (around 25 thousand) lead to an agitated
social and cultural life and help to ensure that Bauru is, above
all, a town headed towards the future.

Lorena
Located in the Valley of Paraíba River, the town is almost
equidistant from São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro and has
excellent transport links. Its population is around 82
thousand people* including that approximately 5 thousand
are students. After the coffee production and livestock-related
activities, Lorena has become industrialized and has taken
its place as one of the Valley’s most important economies. In
this town where technology blends with history, Universidade
de São Paulo has found a fertile terrain for education and
research.

Piracicaba
Home for approximately 360 thousand people* and one of
the largest economies of the state of São Paulo and of Brazil
as a whole, Piracicaba’s agricultural industry is largely derived
from sugar cane. Crossed by the Piracicaba River, the history
of the city has always been a symbiosis between the river
and the town. The university campus occupies 56 hectares
(aprox. 138 acres) and is composed of parks and woodlands
and has a vigorous historical heritage.

Ribeirão Preto
Ribeirão Preto has its origins in the livestock industry, but
this was soon overtaken by coffee production as its main
economic activity. The town has received so many immigrants
(mainly Italians) that, in the beginning of the 20th century,
more than half of its inhabitants were not native Portuguese
speakers. Nowadays, with over 605 thousand people*, it is
considered an attractive option for business enterprises,
besides being an economic highlight in its region. The
diversified cultural life, the rich historic heritage and the talent
for business are remarkable characteristics of Ribeirão Preto.
Definitely, Ribeirão Preto is a big town with aspects of a small
town.

São Carlos
As with many other towns of the region, the city of São Carlos
was at first largely dedicated to the production of coffee.
Subsequently, the changing economy forced modernization
and the need to invest in new infrastructure. This, allied to
the abundant immigrant workforce (mostly Italians), led to
the industrialization of the city. São Carlos, which has become
known for pioneering innovation and a spirit of enterprise,
came to possess a welldeveloped urban infrastructure prior
to many other Brazilian cities. This has turned it into one of
the dominant economies of its region and also a Brazilian
landmark in terms of technology and education.

from all over the world, São Paulo is the most important
financial and economic center of South America. The town
hosts about 90 thousand events a year as well as being the
city of business. It offers a great diversity in terms of leisure,
entertainment and culture (cinemas, theaters, night clubs,
