She was an American soprano who became famous for her complete lack of rhythm, pitch, tone, and overall singing ability. Though discouraged by her father, in 1909 she inherited his fortune and embarked on the career path she desired since childhood. The play Souvenir is a record of her professional history. She had an accompanist, named McMoon whose name appears on her records and played with her at Carnegie Hall. Her story of the taxicab crash is true and she sent the cab driver a box of expensive cigars as a thank you. The challenge for our actress playing Florence Foster Jenkins was to sing badly. During rehearsals I found myself often saying, “That is too pretty Jan.” Jan Fort had to learn the songs correctly to then sing them badly. I hope you enjoy this sweet little tale of an unusual friendship and an even more unusual success story. Stacy Rabon, Director FORD Custom Construction, Inc. Mayo, OD 1200 Highmarket Street 843-546-8421 www.coastaleyegroup.com Who’s Who Jan Powers Fort [Florence Foster Jenkins] “Has known doubt…the dark night of the soul…Music saved me (as did Jesus)”. I can relate to this story SO WELL, but we’ll save that for another day. I truly have a great love of music and the stage. Music and performing have always been a big part of my life. While growing up, my parents exposed me to ALL styles of music. I loved it so much I made a career of it. I have been in the Music Ministry for the past 30 years and currently the Minister of Music at Jamestown Baptist Church in Conway, SC and teaching Kindermusik for 18 years with The Music Studio here in Georgetown. I have worked with the Swamp Fox Players since 1987 in various roles from actor, director and my favorite…stage manager. I was last seen on stage in SFP production of Oklahoma! as Aunt Eller. I want to thank my family for supporting and allowing me to do something that I love to do. It has been a privilege and honor to work with Stacy, Mark and Jo, your encouragement and friendship are priceless. (I know NOW that “from our greatest challenges we learn most” – stage manager it is…). Thank you for coming out and supporting your local theatre. God Bless You. Mark Brown [Cosme McMoon] has been active with the SFP since the mid 80s and helped set-up the guidelines and by-laws as well as served as the first Vice Chairman of the Swamp Fox Players Board of Directors. He has served on the production committee and been an active part of all aspects of running the “behind the scenes” of many shows here at the Strand. Playwright and director of the hugely popular Ghost of the Coast, Mark also directed the sell-out crowd pleasers Steel Magnolias and The Dixie Swim Club for the Strand. Having last been on stage “officially” in Greater Tuna, he humbly returns to the role of acting and freely admits that “directing is easy, stage managing is fun and acting is a nightmare!” Says Mark: It is a pleasure to once again work with Stacy, Jan and Jo: Thanks for your patience and pushing me to give my best. Many thanks to my parents for raising me and to B for loving and supporting me. Many, many thanks to YOU, our patrons for supporting the Swamp Fox Players and God Bless America!
