Start Gates Added for Cheq 40
This September’s Chequamegon 40 start line will
include an expanded start gate system allowing additional
spots for preferred rider placements.
In the long race, five start gates will be available with
specific qualifying criteria. Start gate qualifications will be as
follows for the Chequamegon 40:
• Gate 1: Top 100 men, top 40 women, top 5
tandems, top 5 mixed tandems based on the better of
the two previous years ranking. Gate 1 will replace the
traditional “Preferred Start” area that has existed in the
Chequamegon 40 start for many years.
• Gate 2: Overall rank 101 through 200 based on the
previous two years ranking.
• Gate 3: Overall rank 201 through 300 based on the
previous two years ranking.
• Gate 4: Overall rank 301 through 400 based on the
previous two years ranking.
• Gate 5: Overall rank 401 and above on a first come
first served basis.
Those without previous two year's Chequamegon 40
results may submit recent race resumes for consideration
for start gates 1 through 4 placements. Gate placement is
at the discretion of the race officials. Each gate will have
some discretionary space available that will be filled on the
decision of the race officials. While Gate 1 will include the
specified men, women, tandem and mixed tandem rankings, Gates 2-4 will be based on overall finishing rank
regardless of age gender or competition class rank.
As riders are added to the entry database, the past two
years overall finishing data will automatically be reviewed.
Gate placements will be assigned and riders notified on
their confirmation cards sent once all the entries are added
to the database. On site, race day entrance to the specific
start gates will be monitored by range specific bib numbers
issued to each who qualified.
For those who do not qualify for Gates 1 through 4
there will be no change in the traditional first come first
served line up in Gate 5. For those who do qualify for
Gates 1 through 4 based on the previous two year’s overall
rank the line up spot should offer an improvement over past
years. Please note that the position within each of the numbered gates will still be on a first come first served basis.
For the Short & Fat event, no change is planned in the
start gate system this year other than the naming of the
two available gates. The traditional “preferred start” will
take place in Gate 1 with the balance of short race riders
filling in on a first come first served basis in Gate 2. In the
Short & Fat the top 75 men, top 40 women, top 5
tandems, top 5 mixed tandems from the previous two years
will automatically qualify. Other Short & Fat Gate 1 placements will be considered based on previous finishing results
on a space available basis. Those without Short & Fat
event history who wish to be considered for Gate 1 placement must submit a short verifiable race resume for review.
The decision of the event officials is final.
Once the assignments are made and the confirmation
cards sent, any further request for reconsideration for qualifying gate assignments must be made in writing prior to the
September 1 request for change deadline. As with all registration changes, those requesting start gate reconsideration
must include a $10.00 fee with the written request. After
September 1 no further requests will be reviewed or
changes made.
Our goals in the expanded Chequamegon 40 start gate
system include: qualifying a greater number of top riders
with a specific start gate assignment, alleviating some of
the early morning line up crowding and providing additional
opportunities for some discretionary placement in start
gates.
Due to staffing limits, space requirements and city service logistics, it is not a goal to manage the entire start area
line up or to institute a wave start. Even with the expanded
gate system, riders who do not qualify will still show up
early for the first come first served spaces in Gate 5. While
we do not intend to manage the entire Chequamegon 40
line up, we do hope to provide a better start for the greater
numbers who qualify.

17TH ANNUAL
Share your Chequamegon stories on Facebook
In this our thirtieth anniversary celebration we would like you to share your
Chequamegon stories. I am sure a few of
the nearly 65,000 registered riders have a
good tale to tell from our three historic
decades of fat. Tell us your most memorable Chequamegon story on our new
Facebook page.
You can find us at: www.facebook.
com/ChequamegonFatTireFestival or just
search for Chequamegon. With our unique
moniker it’s an easy search engine match.
Maybe you rode with Greg Lemond in
the torrential downpour and mud of 1990
and 1991. Perhaps it was Jesse Lalonde
with a singlespeed win in 2007 that stands
out in your mind. You surely must have
been dusted by Cindy Storm in one of her
ten Short & Fat victories. Do the Steve Tilford and Brian Matter three-peats have a
place in those memory banks? Or was it
trying to stay ahead of three time running
Stone Saddle Award winner Bob Pendleton
that was your motivation? Maybe an
encounter with Kimberlee Caledonia or
Martha Kennedy in the early 1980’s rings
a bell. Tell us the who, when and what of
your personal Chequamegon history.
Does the year that our original host
Lakewoods burned to the ground and we
pitched our first big tent bring back a
memory? Got a story from the years that
Telemark closed its doors or later reopened
them? Did you miss out in 1997 when we
sold out the 1998 event in twenty four
hours? This is your chance to share your
own Chequamegon history with us and the
world.
Tales of thirty years of fat tire racing
and fat tire fun are intertwined with each
of your personal experiences. Tell us
something we don’t know. We are all ears.

Team Up to Clean Up
The Chequamegon event has a long
standing responsible use and sustainable
trail philosophy. This core value is essential to insuring that the event weekend
trails are left in great shape for future
rider’s enjoyment. In support of that tread
lightly focus, Gu Energy Labs returns in
2012 to sponsor the event’s trail clean up
effort.
Trail clean up is a key priority when
2,750 riders traverse fifty-six miles of linear race course. The GU Clean Up Crew
will be on hand to see that what ever is
left behind is packed out and disposed of
properly.
You can join this commendable trail
advocacy assignment as a volunteer on
the GU Clean Up Crew. Sixteen volunteer
crew members will be selected from those
who best complete the statement, “I want
to be on the GU Clean Up Crew
because…”
If you are interested in one of the
crew spots, send or email in a short written statement postmarked by July 1 to the
Chequamegon race office. GU Crew
chiefs Joe Timmerman and Erik Hansen
will select the team members from among
the submissions received. All applicants
will be notified of the crew selections by
July 15.
As the event weekend draws near,
those selected will receive further instructions about their specific race day clean up
assignment. On race day, the crew members will be assigned one of three trail
clean up sections insuring that the entire
trail is left in good shape following the
racer’s passing.
A job well done deserves an appreciative thank you. Each volunteer GU Crew
member will receive an assortment of GU
Energy Labs products including GU Energy Gel, GU Brew, GU Chomps and other
GU premiums. In further recognition of
the noble clean up efforts, each GU Crew
member will receive a guaranteed
Reserved Registration for the 2013
Chequamegon event.
This is a great opportunity to participate in a note worthy Chequamegon
weekend effort to do something good for
the trails. Join the GU Clean Up Crew,
you will be glad you did.
Crew applications should be submitted by the July 1 postmark deadline to:
GU Clean Up Crew, PO Box 267, Cable,
WI 54821 or you can email your submission to [email protected].

Cable Crit-Cross
Features Hot Laps
The fast paced and spectator friendly
Cable Crit-Cross wraps up the
Chequamegon race weekend. The closed
course lap race features a variety of traditional and unique to the Chequamegon
cyclocross challenges. If you did not preregister at the time of the registration lottery, you can still sign up on the day of
the event, Sunday, September 16.
Featured in the tight twisting course
are several dismount barricade obstacles,
technical singletrack, off angle pitches
and descents. A Cable Crit-Cross original
steps/bridge/ramp obstacle will insure
great racing action. The final layout of the
course will encourage bicycle handling
skills and offer numerous spectator friendly vantage points. Riders can preview the
race course 20 minutes prior to the start
of competition.
Two up two lap qualifying time trials
will be held starting at 10:00 am.
Launched every sixty seconds, pairs of
entrants will compete for a starting position in either the Championship Final or
Consolation Final event. The fastest
group of men and women qualifiers will
compete in the Championship Final.
Those not making the Championship
bracket will compete in the Consolation
Final. The top two finishers, male and
female, in the Consolation Final will be
offered a second chance opportunity to
qualify for the Championship Final.
Both final events will be mass starts.
The Consolation Final will be three laps,
and begin as soon as practical after the
completion of the qualifying time trials.
The Championship Final will be four laps
and begin immediately after the conclusion of the Consolation Final.
Blue Moon Pottery trophies and a
merchandise prize will be presented to
the top three men and women in the
Championship Final and Consolation
Final.
To encourage participation and an
earlier wrap up to the Festival weekend,
the start time of the Cable Crit-Cross will
begin promptly at 10:00 am on Sunday.
Day of registration and bib pick up will be
held from 8:30 am to 9:30 am under the
big top tent at the finish line venue.
If you did not preregister under the
Festival Fee Entry Program the day of
registration fee is $15.00. Qualifying time
trial start times will be assigned on a first
come first served basis at bib pick up.
Participants can enjoy a great morning of
racing and be off on their way home at a
reasonable time shortly after noon.
While the format of the closed
course lap race will add cyclocross features participants may ride any style of
bike they choose; cyclocross, geared
mountain bike or singlespeed. Because of
the anticipated number of participants, all
ages and bike styles are merged into an
open class to determine the finalists for
men and women.
Essay Contest
Awards Race Spots
With the great demand for the midMarch lottery drawn limit of 2,750 race
spots, over six hundred applicants fell
short in this year’s registration selection
process. Those unlucky in the drawing
have already learned that they were not
among the chosen ones to ride in this
year’s event. But wait there is still a
chance to ride in the sold out September
15 Chequamegon 40 and Short and Fat
cross county events. Fifty guaranteed
reserved entries will be awarded to the
winners of the 50 Ways to Ride the
Chequamegon essay contest.
In spite of the contest title, you do
not need to list fifty individual reasons for
wanting a race spot. Past contestants
have submitted Chequamegon themed
stories, songs, poems, drawings, parodies
and even children’s chunky crayon notes.
Submissions may be written, drawn, photographed, filmed and/or recorded.
Past contest winners have used tales
of personal relationships, lifestyle motivations, historical connections, advocacy
efforts, competition goals, personal
demographics, geographic location and
countless other reasons to sway the contest judges. What ever the reason, the
authors of the winning essays will receive
a reserved race spot in the sold out event.
A multi-point scoring system is
applied to each contest submission. Originality, creativity, humor, sincerity, special
effort and other undisclosed factors will
produce a total essay score. Contestants
are advised to give it their best shot. With
hundreds of contest submissions, the competition is keen.
Essays must be legible, with a 500
word maximum (most are much less) and
if three dimensional in nature be less than
two foot by two foot in overall size. All
submissions must be postmarked, emailed
or otherwise delivered to the
Chequamegon office no later than July 1.
After the submissions are judged, winners
will be selected and all contest participants notified of the outcome by July 15.
Winners will get reserved entries.
Those out of the winning column will be
encouraged to join the spectator or volunteer fun over the Chequamegon event
weekend. The decision of the judges is
final in this last-chance-at-an-entry-spot
essay contest. All essays become property
of the Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival, will
not be returned and may be reproduced at
some future date without further notification.
To be included in this year’s “50
Ways to Ride the Chequamegon” essay
contest postmark your submission by July
1 to the Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival,
PO Box 267, 13460 Spruce Street Cable,
WI 54821. Emails are acceptable if
received by that July 1 deadline at
[email protected].

SPRING 2012 – FAT TRACKS – 7
Rough Stuff Test
Orienteering Skills
Backwoods navigation is an essential
skill on your two wheeled journeys
through the Chequamegon woods. In a
classic battle pitting brain versus brawn,
the Rough Stuff Poker Ride offers a
unique competitive challenge to test those
skills.
The event features a well-mapped
and marked bicycle orienteering course
set throughout the Telemark Resort trail
maze. Prior to the start, riders have a
chance to review the course map containing the seven dispersed checkpoints.
Then, at an assigned start time, participants head out into the woods to find the
locations.
Bright orange and white orienteering
flags mark the numbered checkpoints.
Each flag has a unique punch that you
use on your personal control card to confirm you have reached that specific destination. The search continues until your
card is punched at all check points and
you return to the finish line.
The Rough Stuff offers a variety of
competition classes. You decide if you
want to participate for a low elapsed time
or just for the fun of it. Those with a
competitive edge can select the traditional
Timed Competition. Those riding in this
on-the-clock category will focus on the
fastest time to find the checkpoints and
return to the finish. Times are ranked to
determine the award winners for men and
women.
Those interested in a more relaxed
ride in the woods may select the Poker
Ride Competition. In this fun untimed
format, cyclists ride the course as a solo
rider, with a group or as a part of a guided tour group. Groups can be made up of
any friends, family members or fellow riders registered in the event.
The guided tour group is a great way
for those new to orienteering to learn
about wooded navigation. Head out into
the woods with our experienced guides to
learn a bit about navigating in the woods
and possibly win a best poker hand prize.
The object of the Poker Ride Competition is to find all or as many of the
checkpoints as possible. For each checkpoint located and punched on your control card, the Poker rider will earn the
right to draw one playing card back at the
finish line. The more check points you
find, the more cards you can draw to create your five card poker hand. Whether
you complete the course in a swift or
slow time, your poker hand may win you
valuable merchandise prizes provided by
Chequamegon sponsors.
As an added incentive to keep your
eyes open for several Joker signs hung
randomly in the woods. Each sign will
have a limited number of smaller Joker
cards that you can take back to use as a
wild card to improve your poker hand.
Don’t know anything about poker
hands? Not a problem, event staff will
help you select your best hand from the
cards drawn and rank them accordingly
for the prize selections.
The top five fastest men and women
in the Timed Competition, based on lowest elapsed time for a fully completed
course will receive a Blue Moon Pottery
plaque and a merchandise prize. For the
Poker Ride Competition, the top twenty
poker hands, men and women combined
will receive a merchandise prize. All
timed competition and poker riders will
compete in an open class with no other
specific age or competition classes
offered.
Those who registered for the event at
the time of pre-registration under the Festival Fee Entry Program must check in at
bib pick up on Sunday morning to declare
their competition class, receive their race
number and start time block. Day of the
event registrations will be accepted from
7:30 am to 8:30 am on Sunday. The day
of registration fee is $15.00. More details
of the Rough Stuff Poker Ride event will
be provided in your race packet materials
or can be found on our blog at
www.blog.cheqfattire.com .
Start times are as follows:
9:00 am Timed competition starts
9:15 am Solo poker ride starts
9:30 am Group poker ride starts
9:30 am Guided tour poker ride starts
Awards for both competitions will be
presented at the 12:30 pm awards ceremony under the Big Top Tent at the Telemark Resort finish line.

Trek Trail Fund
Match Continues
In an ongoing advocacy program
pledge that continues through 2013, Trek
Bicycle Corporation will once again
match the Save the Trails funds donated
by Chequamegon entrants. These trail
building funds go directly to building and
maintaining off road trails in the region.
This great program started in 2008
when Trek announced a three year, up to
$10,000 per year, match of the
Chequamegon’s Save the Trail funds. At
the close of the first three year funds
matching pledge in 2010, Trek confirmed
a three year extension of those matching
funds. To date, a four year total of nearly
$80,000 has been raised by
Chequamegon riders and Trek’s match.
The “Save the Trails” voluntary contribution program was initiated by the
Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival organization in 1993. Since that time, event participants have added voluntary contributions to their entry fees. The funds collected have been provided in full to support the programs of the Chequamegon
Area Mountain Bike Association
(CAMBA) and in part the International
Mountain Bike Association (IMBA).
It takes a lot of sweat equity and a
sizeable funding component to build and
maintain bicycle trails. Since beginning its
singletrack trail building initiative in 1999,
Double Your $$$$
Don’t miss this opportunity to double your Save the Trails
contribution with the matching funds from Trek.
CAMBA has spent over $120,000 developing 75+ miles of new IMBA standard
singletrack trails in the Namakagon,
Cable, Seeley, and Hayward Clusters of
the CAMBA system and performing
important maintenance tasks throughout
the trail system.
Most recently, new singletrack trail
has been designed and built moving north
from “OO” in Seeley. The northbound
link is being developed to connect to the
Ojibwe Trail in the Cable Cluster. When
completed, a linear single track will run
from the Fish Hatchery Park trail head in
Hayward north to the Telemark Resort
trail head in Cable and eventually connecting east to the Namakagon Cluster.
Funds facilitate trail building labor,
equipment services and tools, signage and
supply purchases. Your dollars and the

SPRING 2012 – FAT TRACKS – 9
THE FATMAN FILES
My First Chequamegon 40 …
and by no means my last
I began a long relationship with the
Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival in 1983.
Five years earlier fate had led me from
Madison to the wooded wilds of Northern
Wisconsin. That relocation presented the
rare opportunity to be on the Main Street
Hayward start line of the very first
Chequamegon 40. A finishing time of
3:36 was good for twelfth overall in a first
year field of twenty seven. Imagine, me in
the top twenty. That same time in today’s
event would place me at around 1400
overall in a field of 1850. I was fortunate
to be a part of the off road history made
that day between Main Street Hayward
and Lakewoods Resort in Cable. The
1983 results show that I was assigned bib
number 1 in that inaugural year. Ironically
I took on the Number 1 leadership role in
the Chequamegon for the next three
decades.
Thirty years later, I have few distinct
memories of the event itself. Forty miles
on a heavy steel bike must have been a
real torture test but I was having too much
fun to notice. I was riding a state of the
art early eighties Stumpjumper that first
year, one of the first production mountain
bikes. The hard tail rigid fork steel frame
came with bear claw pedals without clips,
friction levers and an amazing fifteen
gears. I am not sure the whole range was
working that day but it was a comfort to
know that wide range was available. I am
amazed that I was able to survive forty
miles of wooded trails on it back in the
day.
Decked out from head to toe in cotton the death fabric, I was ready for anything that the forest threw my way. Sweat
pants, sweat shirt and a T-shirt were the
dress of the day. Tennis shoes and an old
heavy hard shell Bell helmet completed
the race day attire. Those pesky tennis
shoe laces seemed to always get caught in
the chain rings.
The first five years of the
Chequamegon 40 were routed to Lakewoods Resort. A seemingly endless trek
down the length of Rock Lake Road
brought the first year’s race field to the
finish line on the shores of Lake Namakagon. There was no chip timing, awards
scoreboard, big top tent or crowds of
spectators to witness our accomplishments. I can attest that a grilled brat and
beer at the end of the 40 then was as satisfying as it is today. We made mountain
biking history in its pure and simple form
that day in 1983.
This year I will take part in my thirtieth Chequamegon weekend. Only one
year as a participant and the past twenty
nine as its director. A couple of fat tired
pioneers have been riding in all thirty of
the events however. With good fortune
and fitness on their side Jeff Austin of
Green Bay, WI one of the original Titletown Flyers and Dennis Kruse of Cable,
WI, a member of the Chequama Mamas
Bicycle Club are our honored Fat Tire
Founders.
Our thirty years of fat tire success
would not be possible without the great
working partnerships that define this
event. With nearly 65,000 registrations,
you the riders have been great partners
through the years. It is your annual cross
country adventures that have added richly
to our colorful history. Without the hard
working, dedicated key race staff and
their professional and flawless performance in all areas of event management
we would not be here today. From the
beginning, sponsors at all levels from near
and far have provided the support we
need to stage this great Festival. Most
importantly, the surrounding communities
have embraced the event providing the
masses of volunteers who get the job
done as planned.
I am fortunate indeed to have found
myself in the right place at the right time
doing the right thing with such a great
team for so many years here in
Chequamegonland.
With thirty years down you may ask
what the future is for the Fatman. Well, I
plan to be around the event for many
years to come. While it is my profession,
being Festival Director is also my pleasure
and passion. I love this job.
Enjoy your Chequamegon adventure
this September. Whether you are riding,
working or watching, you are making history in this our thirtieth year.
–Gary Crandall aka The Fatman
In 2003, as recognition of the event’s significance in the history of the sport and as a credit to his event management team and community and industry partnership, Gary Crandall
was inducted into the Mountain Biking Hall of
Fame in Crested Butte, Colorado. For more

Little Bellas Mentoring Program
Returns to Chequamegon
We are pleased to announce that the Little Bellas mentoring on mountain bikes
program will once again host a camp at
the Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival Mountain Bike Camp this September 14-16.
The Little Bellas camp is presented
by Specialized and made possible with the
sponsorship support of Becker Law
Office, Primal Wear and the
Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival. Professional riding sisters Lea and Sabra Davison run the all girls mountain bike program open to young females ages 8
through 12. With a focus on improving
skills and having fun, the camp is a good
opportunity for girls looking to try out
mountain biking as well as those who are
ready for the next level of challenge.
“We aim to create a community to
empower women through cycling, accent
the importance of goals and a healthy life
style, and emphasize a positive female
bond. While this program is centered
around creating a female camaraderie on
bikes, it is most importantly about having
fun in a constructive environment.”
Last year’s camp was well attended
and received by those who participated.
Rave reviews were received from the first
year participants. This well organized
youth mentoring program is a welcome
addition to the fun family atmosphere of
the Chequamegon weekend.
Space is limited in the Little Bellas
Chequamegon Mountain Bike Camp. For

CAMBA Trail Tour
A great Friday warm-up!
The Chequamegon Area Mountain Bike
Association will feature a favored singletrack
destination as this year’s Chequamegon Festival weekend opener. A Friday tradition, the
2012 CAMBA Trail Tour will take place at
CAMBA’s County Highway “OO” Trailhead
in Seeley located at the American Birkebeiner ski trail parking lot. Riders are invited to
enjoy this casual tour of CAMBA’s newest
singletrack trail, Seeley Pass. Proceeds of
the event will help further support of
CAMBA’s trail building programs.
Small groups will depart on guided
rides of 8 to 10 miles from the trailhead
with routes going both north out and back
on Seeley Pass or returning via fire roads.
The route is rated intermediate. Guides will
be available to help introduce those unfamiliar with singletrack riding to the basics of
riding this fun trail type.
All participants will receive a CAMBA
water bottle or other swag and entry into
random drawings for some great prizes from
Chequamegon event sponsors. With a great
selection of prizes almost everyone has a
chance at winning something. Proceeds
benefit the trail advocacy efforts of the
Chequamegon Area Mountain Bike Association, a non-profit organization. Visit

SPRING 2012 – FAT TRACKS – 11
CAMBA Festival of Trails 2012
The fourth annual CAMBA Festival of
the Trails will take place this year on Memorial Day weekend, May 25-27, 2012. This is
a departure from the event’s traditional date,
which had been one week later. “The
change in the date is, in part, an attempt to
attract more participants to the Festival,”
says CAMBA executive director, Ron Bergin.
The Festival has seen steady growth since its
inception in 2009 and last year attracted
135 riders to the three days of trail-based
events. “While the Festival’s level of growth
has been satisfactory,” Bergin adds, “we
would like to see it expand to up to 200 riders.”
The 2012 Festival of the Trails will get
underway at noon on Friday and continue
through 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, with one
additional event that evening. There will be
no Festival activities or events on Memorial
Day Monday.
CAMBA’s Festival Committee has been
meeting for the past several months to develop new events and fine-tune the Festival
offerings for this year. “It has been our intent
to add something new or tweak things a little every year to help keep the event fresh
and interesting for new and returning participants,” Bergin explained.
Guided rides in addition to the usual
self-guided rides will be added as part of the
Festival’s “Tour de Trails” where riders tour
the various CAMBA singletrack trails in the
Cable, Hayward, Namakagon and Seeley
area. Riders will punch a tally card along the
way to gain points toward a huge prize
drawing, the Swag Fest, at the conclusion
of the event.
On Friday, a social Meet & Greet will
take place this year on the shores of Lake
Namakagon at Garmisch Resort. The Friday
evening Night Ride will follow the Meet &
Greet departing from the nearby Namakagon Town Hall Trailhead.
Taste de Trails will offer specialty food
samples from several area restaurants in
one central location along the designated
route. Adding music will boost the festive
atmosphere as riders emerge from the
woods to a “Food Fest in the Forest.”
Sunday afternoon’s Barbecue and
Swag-Fest will take place this year at the
OO Trailhead in Seeley.
New this year, a limited number of
campsites will be available near the OO
Trailhead on Sawyer County Forest land.
The County recently adopted a policy permitting camping on the county forest,
which has made this possible.
On Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m.,
Pedal Driven, a mountain bike advocacy film
will be shown at the Park Theater in Hayward.
The 2012 CAMBA Festival of the
Trails will kick off the local summer vacation and mountain biking season with a
large number of trail riding activities and
events. The event is a fund raising effort in
support of CAMBA’s ongoing singletrack
development initiative, which has seen the
creation of over 75 miles of singletrack
mountain bike trails over the past eight
years.
Approximately 40 to 50 volunteers are
needed to organize and present the fourth
annual Festival of the Trails. Anyone interested in assisting should contact Ron Bergin
at (715)798-3599 or [email protected].
For complete information visit the
CAMBA website, www.cambatrails.org.
Trail Genius to Return to
Chequamegon
Last year Trail Genius (www.trailgenius)
partnered with Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival to produce and make available
Chequamegon 40 videos with an interactive
map. Their efforts allowed participants to
relive the event online with all its grueling
roller coaster ride glory. As a follow up to
the rave reviews they received, we are
pleased to report they will be back in 2012
to further explore video/map possibilities at
this year’s event.
Trail Genius is a service that can be
used to document trail systems, races, or
event routes via HD camera with GPS
capacity. Their professional staff turns the
video into an online interactive ride experience. Viewers can watch streaming video
with real time speed, elevation, and global
positioning plotted on the actual trail being
ridden. The online map interface can be
embedded into any webpage and used to
drive traffic to both your trails and your
website.
Contact the Trail Genius team for more
info on how to put your trails "on the map."

14 – FAT TRACKS – SPRING 2012
When Can I Set My Bike Up?
On Saturday morning, many riders
who did not qualify for one of the designated starting gates hope to get the jump
on a good start line position in the first
come first served start gates. An undesirable and illegal hazard exists when bikes
are laid down on the city streets prior to
the officially posted street closing time.
The City of Hayward and Town of
Cable grant permission to close down
Main Street for the Chequamegon 40 and
Randysek Road for the Short & Fat event
at 6:00 a.m.
It is important that bikes are not laid
down on the streets before the street closing barricades go up to officially close the
streets.
In both Hayward and Cable the start
lines are in close proximity to fire departments and ambulance services. These
essential services must be able to access
their service areas via the customary
roads. Since the official closures do not go
into effect until 6:00 am, early morning
local traffic is also inconvenienced with
early bike lay downs.
At each start line there will be signed
off the street early line up areas adjacent
to each of the designated start gates.
Early arrivals should line up in an orderly
fashion near their designated start gate
and wait until the start line chief gives the
word to move to the street. Riders arriving
early should remain with their bikes in the
early line up area until movement to the
street is permitted. Access to the designated start gates will be allowed by specific race number.
We ask all racers to maintain order,
fairness and safety at the start line. Please
do not jeopardize our valued municipal
permissions and observe the posted lay
down times and locations.
Ghost Bikes at the Start Line
In the Chequamegon start line operations, “ghost bikes” refer to placeholder
bikes in the start line area that have no
one attending them. The unattended
ghost bikes fall into two basic categories:
a bike that has NO RACE NUMBER
attached to it or a bike has a RACE
NUMBER attached to it. In either case
ghost bikes belong to registered participants who plan on returning to them just
prior to the start.
In general, registered riders leaving
ghost bikes at the start line are off warming up on their race bike, standing in the
portable toilet line or perhaps having just
one more cup of coffee before the start.
We assume that riders have every intention of coming back to the start line and
claiming or replacing their ghost bike just
prior to the start.
As the start time approaches ghost
bikes are problematic if the owner does
not return in a timely fashion. For that
reason there is a specific time that
unnumbered ghost bikes must be replaced
with bikes with numbers and when race
numbered ghost bikes must be attended
at the start line.
All ghost bikes without race numbers
must be removed by their owners and
replaced with race bikes with race numbers no later than 9:30 a.m.
All ghost bikes with a race numbers
must be attended by the rider no later
than 9:50 a.m. or they will be removed
from the start line.
Ghost bikes removed from the start
area will be placed in a marked impoundment area immediately adjacent to the
start line.
With this in mind please plan your
last minute needs in a timely fashion.
If the ghost bikes in either category
are either not removed and replaced by a
race bike or not attended by their registered rider, the Bandit Patrol will remove
them from the start area and place them
in the impound area adjacent to the start
line. Riders who have their bikes removed
from the start line will lose their start
position and be required to re-enter the
start area at the back of the line up. If
you value your start line position be sure
you are with your bikes by the posted
times.
Weekend Awards Under the Big Top
Saturday evening the stage will be set
to recall the day’s competitive adventures
and honor the top riders. You do not want
to miss the Awards Presentation under the
Big Top Chequamegon that begins at 8:00
p.m. at the Telemark Resort finish line.
A day of the event slide show will be
presented at the start of the awards gathering. A thirty-year retrospective slide show
will also be shown highlighting three
decades of fat tire fun.
Immediately after the slide show presentations, the age class, overall and champions awards for men, women and other
competition classes will be announced for
both the Short & Fat and Chequamegon
40. Along with recognition of the days top
riders special awards will be presented to
the Oldest Man and Women in the
Chequamegon 40, the Oldest Man and
Woman in the Event, the Fastest Canadian,
the last place Stone Saddle Award and the
Longest Distanced Traveled to the Event
Award.
Remember this is presentation is in a
tent, outside in the cool September air. We
advise bringing along an extra layer to keep
your self warm through the multi-media
awards presentation. The beverage concession will be open prior to and during the
awards presentation.
On Sunday under the Big Top
Chequamegon, the awards for the Rough
Stuff Poker Ride, the Cable Crit-Cross
championship and consolation finals and
the Sunday Funday Events will be given out
immediately following the conclusion of
those events. In addition the Festival Fee
Entrants drawing award winners will be
announced.

Forest Road Closures on Race Day
Participant safety is our number one priority over the Chequamegon event weekend. With that in mind, spectator vehicle travel on many forest road portions of the
Chequamegon 40 and Short & Fat courses will be restricted on race day.
Please note the travel restrictions below for Saturday September 15, 2012. The
temporary road restrictions will be in effect from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Only race
staff vehicles and rider support vehicles with VEHICLE PERMITS will be allowed on
the closed sections. General spectator travel is not allowed on the closed road portions
of the race courses.
There are a limited number of VEHICLE PERMITS available for those providing
elite racer nutritional support along the race route. These can be obtained from the
race headquarters and will be required on race morning to access the closed road sections of the racecourse.
Those seeking a vehicle permit should contact the Chequamegon office at [email protected] prior to the event. The details of who requires the support, the type
of vehicle and the support vehicle driver’s name will be required. Issuance of a vehicle
permit is the sole discretion of the race director.

Race Day Parking Tips
A great deal of excitement comes to
Cable & Hayward on Chequamegon race
day. Along with influx of 2,750 racers,
their support crew and spectators comes
the question, “Where does everyone
park?”
Race day parking requires a bit of
common sense and common courtesy
especially for those more used to the vast
urban infrastructure not found in the tiny
towns of Bayfield and Sawyer County.
Your vehicular actions will leave a lasting
impression on the area’s residents and law
enforcement officials. With a bit of preplanning you will make that impression a
positive one.
First and foremost remember, we live
in small towns and the vehicular pace is
somewhat more subtle than you may be
used to in your home town. In addition,
the Cable and Hayward business community will appreciate it greatly if you do not
fill up their business lots on race morning.
Their regular customers will need those
spaces while you are off on a wooded
cycling adventure. Please remember to
observe all posted restrictions and respect
private property access when parking on
residential side streets.
To provide assistance on race day,
yellow vested Race Official parking monitors will help direct you to designated
large lots in Cable and Hayward.
To help minimize the parking confusion, please note both the parking recommendations and no parking restrictions
listed below. All recommended lots are
within a short bike ride from the cross
county event start lines. All area Church
parking areas are pending race weekend
restrictions that may be required for
planned Church activity events (weddings,
funerals, etc)

For Your Reading Enjoyment: A Few 50 Ways Contest Winners
ONE MUDDY AFTERNOON
Treads shear into the soft ground
beneath,
grabbing a hold the muddy mess below
and forcefully propelling itself forward.
The gears clatter like grandma’s dinner
bell
as I roll over roots and rocks alike.
The rattles run up through my arms,
shaking them like an old lawn mower.
The terrain would be considered difficult
to walk,
but aboard a bike, it’s wonderfully challenging.
The squeak of wet metallic disc brakes
and mud dripping from my chin
only add to the excitement.
I can feel my heart pound through my
chest
as I dodge trees and skid around rocks.
My feet power into the pedals
like the incredible hulk in spandex tights.
The alveoli in my lungs cry for oxygen.
As I throw my front tire to the line.
The pistons in my legs explode one last
time.
I finish an ecstatic dead last.
–Mason Bacso, Plymouth, MN
SHUTDOWN LOOMING
OK, so I’ve waiting until the last
minute again. Being from Minnesota I
thought the right thing to do is to delay
as long as possible and hope things work
out. Last year I missed the deadline to
enter the Fat Tire Essay and experienced
my own “shutdown.” I started an essay
right after missing the lottery - it was a
good one and I no doubt would have gotten selected – but I didn’t get it done in
time. But I learned. I didn’t even start
work on this year’s essay until a couple of
minutes ago (June 30 at 1 pm). I did ask
a judge though if she would guarantee
that I get in anyway, despite missing the
deadline. But she said lights out.
Like many other folks out there with
a good case, my participation in the race
was deemed non-essential. But I’m getting old and feeble and need help. I
know the lottery is designed to give more
riders a chance to ride their first race.
How about a chance for an old guy to
ride what might be his last race? Do we
invest more in the old or the young, the
healthy or the sick? I’m confused. I can’t
get this done.
Help avert a shutdown. Please
declare my entry in the Fat Tire Race an
essential function.
–Philip M. Jenni, St. Paul, MN

Hey ! Mr Fat Man , grant me an entry please
My hearts heavy and I’m sad there is no race I'm going toooooo
Hey ! Mr Fat Man, grant me an entry please
In the jingle jangle September morning let me come rollin’ my tires to youuuuuu.
Though I know that your empire must return entries across the land
The returned check still in my hand
Left me blindly here to stand, wonderin’ if there’s a chance of raciiiiing
My disappointment amazes me, I'm helpless on my feet
I have no race to be, no donut holes to eat
