WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT LEATHER
Leather is a solid investment– Leather is
generally the most durable of all furniture coverings.
While you may pay more initially for leather
upholstery, its durability and functionality will
more than pay for itself. At Craftsman Leather we
select only the finest quality leathers to assure you
years of use.
Leather is always comfortable– Like our skin,
leather breathes to adjust to temperatures very
quickly. Leather adapts its surface temperatures so
that it is warm and cozy in the winter and cool in the
summer. Leather is a smart choice for all climates.
The quality of the hide makes all the
difference– Craftsman Leather is made of only the
highest quality cow hides from the finest domestic,
European, and South American tanneries. The quality of leather is determined by the quality of the hide
and its tanning process, not its origin. Craftsman
Leather uses only cow hides on our furniture as they
are far more durable than other hides such as pig,
lamb or buffalo. Our exotic hides are actually cow
hides embossed to appear as crocodile, baby
crocodile, ostrich, lizard and others.
Leather is a natural material– and no two
hides are the same. Each hide contains healed scars
and scratches that are reflective of the steer’s life.
These markings are a result of barbed wire scratches,
the horns of other cattle, brand marks, insect bites,
stretch marks, etc. These scars are natural and in no
way affect the beauty or strength of the leather.
These unique characteristics are your assurance of
genuine leather. In addition to scars, wrinkles
naturally appear in hides, especially in the neck and
shoulder areas of the cow.
Variations in grain are also representative of genuine
leather. The grain is relatively tight across the
backbone wile it may be very loose in the belly and
flank areas. Graining, like human fingerprints, is
unique to each individual hide.
Natural markings distinguish hides from one another
such as the shade and tone variation.
In the dying process, these variations make it impos-

sible for each hide to dye exactly the same. Hides
absorb color based on the natural cell structure. On a
sofa, five hides may be utilized which will blend and
complement each other but will never be identical.
Leather is versatile– Depending on the leather,
color and application, leather furniture can be
applied to every setting. From the very upscale urban
loft to the most rugged mountain cabin, leather goes
well in all design environments. Today’s dying, tanning and embossing techniques makes it possible for
hides to be transformed to be sleek, soft, knobby,
washed, weathered, distressed, flowery, regal, western
— you name it. The leather hide is the canvass for all
art forms in leather tanning. For this reason, leather
can be all things to all designers, all homes and all
levels of formality.
Leather improves with age– Leather is
charming and enduring. Unlike fabric upholstery,
the appearance of a properly maintained leather piece
can actually improve with age. A stain, which might
prove disastrous to a fabric, can add to the character
and patina of a leather piece. Scratches rub out over
time creating a more interesting look. Like fabric,
however, too much sun will cause leather to fade.
Leather fits every lifestyle– Craftsman Leather
offers leathers for every lifestyle. Among the dozens
of leather choices you will find that our leathers are
priced according to grade. The price is reflective of
the quality of the hide, the intricacy of the tanning
process, and the amount of protection or
pigmentation. Generally, the cleanest and highest
quality hides are selected to become aniline and
nubuck leathers. These leathers have a softer and
more natural appearance because they have very little
finish on the surface. Because such leathers have less
protection against staining and marking, they are
more appropriate for adult settings.
Hides with more scars and natural markings are
coated with additional opaque pigmentation to make
them cosmetically more appealing. The application
of this pigment adds protection to the hides, which
makes them easier to clean and better suited for
homes with small children, and pets.

has been diluted over the years as
the original technique of hand

manufacturing shortcuts and marketing mythology.

process takes twice as long, but the

MARSHALL UNIT BACK
Most tight back designs feature
the use of Marshall Unit coil
springs over a sinuous spring
foundation...a construction feature rarely seen today. Unlike the
simple foam construction used by
others, the muslin-covered springs
of a Marshall Unit will not pocket
or sag with use. This technique

How to choose the best leather
for your home
Leather Types:
FULL Aniline Leather: This top grain leather is
natural and has a light protective coating. Generally, it
is the softest leather available.
Nubuck Leather: This top grain leather is lightly
protected. It is usually sanded or buffed and is
very soft.
Pull-Up: This leather is a full aniline with an oil or
wax application. When the leather is pulled or
stretched, the color becomes lighter.
Semi-Aniline Leather: This top grain leather is
lightly finished, but offers more protection from stains
and fading than a full aniline leather.
3 – Natural Resistance – the most expensive
and elegant of all leather,
typically pure or naked, will gain a patina over time.
Carefully clean with distilled water on a sponge; feather the moistened area. Remove excess moisture by
patting dry with a clean white towel. Do not rub or
scrub. Let dry naturally. This leather will fade under
direct or indirect sunlight.
Protected Leather: This top grain leather is finished and protected making it most resistant to spills
and stains.
