100th Birthday celebration!
Wally Matthews is a regular client at the
Day Centre and we were so pleased and
proud of him on his 100th birthday.
An exciting day, for him and for us! the
local Exmouth Journal had an interview
with him and took his picture for
publication. We had a cake, obviously , and
balloons. Wally was quite overwhelmed by
the kind wishes bestowed on him. He is
such a lovely gentleman, always cheerful,
forever smiling. he regales us with stories
of his past in London and his life that
brought him to Exmouth where he lives
now close to family, though still
independent.
Happy 100th Wally!!

A Shining Light
O
n Monday 15th April, the Rotary Club of Exmouth and District Club President Keith presented Penny Beerling,
Manager of the Age Concern Exmouth (ACE) Day Care Centre with a digital projector and screen for the ACE
day care centre in New Street, Exmouth.
The award has occurred through a chance discussion
between Past President Rotarian Malcolm Pressey
and Penny on the needs of the centre which serves
many Exmouth and District older residents in a
number of supportive ways.
Malcolm took his proposal to the chairman of our
Community and Vocational Committee, Past
President Graham Kirby, and Graham, through his
committee and ultimately the approval of the Club,
saw the project through.
Penny, in her thank you, saw the projector and
screen as a great asset to ACE where it can be used
for communication both to staff and clients for
training and entertainment. Further, it can be used
as a fund-raiser through events such as a cinema
club.
Best regards from the roving reporter!

CMT Every Wednesday
E
very Wednesday Age Concern Exmouth has a 'CMT' meeting (CMT stands for Case Management Team).
The Case Management Team is made up of the following:




Steve Dace (Chief Officer)
Penny Beerling (Day Centre Manager & Volunteer Co-ordinator)
Deborah Hipkiss (Home Services Manager)
Maria Bridle (Information & Advice Manager)
The meeting runs from 10.30am to 12.00 noon. We use the meeting to inform each other with regard to what is
happening in our respective areas of work. We disseminate information amongst ourselves. By doing this, we
ensure that we all 'sing from the same hymn sheet' and thus we are able to feedback good quality information to
clients, staff and volunteers alike.
However the main purpose of our meetings is to be able to discuss how we can support individual clients. Every
Age Concern is autonomous and is a separate entity in itself. So that means they can and usually do operate
differently from each other. One way at Exmouth we choose to operate is to have our client at the centre of what
we do. Our meetings ensure that where appropriate to do so we take the client who may present as more complex
and place them at the centre of all our services and activities with the aim of providing an outcome (Or solution) to
the complexity presented. Again we ensure continuity across our services exists when accessing clients.
Above all meeting like this allows our services to be flexible and variable to suits individual needs.

NHS 111 service But not in Devon yet!
NHS 111 is a new service that's being introduced to make it easier for you to access local NHS healthcare services.
You can call 111 when you need medical help fast but it’s not a 999 emergency. NHS 111 is a fast and easy way to get
the right help, whatever the time.
NHS 111 is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Calls are free from landlines and mobile phones.
When to use it
You should use the NHS 111 service if you urgently need medical help or advice but
it's not a life-threatening situation.
Call 111 if:




you need medical help fast but it's not a 999 emergency
you think you need to go to A&E or need another NHS urgent care service
you don't know who to call or you don't have a GP to call
you need health information or reassurance about what to do next
For less urgent health needs, contact your GP or local pharmacist in the usual way.
If a health professional has given you a specific phone number to call when you are
concerned about your condition, continue to use that number.
For immediate, life-threatening emergencies, continue to call 999.
How does it work?
The NHS 111 service is staffed by a team of fully trained advisers, supported by experienced nurses. They will ask you
questions to assess your symptoms, then give you the healthcare advice you need or direct you straightaway to the
local service that can help you best. That could be A&E, an out-of-hours doctor, an urgent care centre or a walk-in
centre, a community nurse, an emergency dentist or a late-opening chemist.
Where possible, the NHS 111 team will book you an appointment or transfer you directly to the people you need to
speak to.
If NHS 111 advisers think you need an ambulance, they will immediately arrange for one to be sent to you.
Calls to 111 are recorded. All calls and the records created are maintained securely, and will only be shared with
others directly involved with your care.
In Devon, in the meantime, continue to call NHS Direct on 0845 4647
NHS Direct will continue to provide the 0845 4647 help line in some areas while the local commissioners get ready to
publicly launch their NHS 111 service.

Scams Awareness Month - May 2013
What are scams?
Scams are schemes to cheat people out of their money. Other names for scam include fraud, hoax, con or swindle.
Scams come in a variety of ways: post, phone, email, online, sometimes with a knock on the door.
There are hundreds of scams: fake lotteries and prize draws, bogus health cures, dodgy investment schemes, pyramid
selling, phishing - to name just a few. New scams appear as more people become aware of them and as criminals try
to keep one step ahead.
Every year more than three million people in the UK fall victim to scams losing hundreds and even thousands of
pounds. It is estimated that nearly half of people in the UK (48 per cent) have been targeted by a scam and that £3.5
billion is lost to scams every year.
People from all walks of life get conned because scammers are clever and always on the lookout for new ways to take
our money.
May 2013 is Scams Awareness Month. Citizens Advice and the Trading Standards Institute have teamed up with a
campaign to highlight the problem of scams, tell people how to avoid being taken in and how they can fight back
against the scammers. More info at http://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/index/campaigns/current_campaigns/scams_awareness_month.htm
Action Fraud is the UK's national fraud and
internet crime reporting centre
They provide a central point of contact for
information about fraud and financially motivated
internet crime. If you've been scammed, ripped off
or conned, there is something you can do about
it. Report fraud to them and receive a police crime
reference number.
Are you living alone?
I
f you live alone, try to make sure that someone - a friend, relative
or neighbour - can help you with shopping, collecting prescriptions,
paying bills, etc., if you cannot get out either because of the
weather or because you become unwell. Check your local pharmacies
to see if any offer a home delivery service (most do) for prescription
items.
If you are unable to rely on a friend, relative or neighbour why not
contact us at Age Concern Exmouth to discuss how we will be able to
help you.

New Names … Same Service
It’s Been All Change At The Day Centre
T
he Day Centre Manager remains Penny Beerling, but one of the recent changes means
that she is now works out of the centre in New North Road.
Another change was the leaving of Sue Hardwick, who left right at the end of last year. One
of her last activities was to oversee a visit from the children of the Beacon Church of England
Primary School. They were an absolute delight and were so generous with the donations
raised at their Harvest Supper Assembly. We say THANK YOU to the children, staff and
parents as we made use of all their gifts here in Age Concern.
Penny Beerling
We were then very pleased to welcome Angela Boatwright as our new Activities Organiser.
Angela has continued to build on connecting links with schools and invited children from Exeter Road Primary
School. to sing at our annual Christmas Festivities. As her job suggests, Angela is bringing about a new programme
of events for the Day Centre with social , mental and physical goals in mind for all to access. Along with our normal
games, quizzes, conversations, crafts, exercises and reminiscences, Angela has organised sing-a-longs, story-tellers,
library visit, yoga and even a visit from the Donkey!
At Landon House we offer a variety of activities which help
our clients retain their cognitive and physical abilities (for
example we use quizzes and physical exercises).
We also create a sense of belonging to a group (games of
bingo, darts, bowls, skittles etc.) and of course we have fun!
We offer therapeutic activities such as craft (a very popular
activity on a Friday morning), making cakes, painting as well
as yoga to promote relaxation and physical mobility and
then there are our music sessions.
We also offer reminiscing activities to aid memory and share
valuable experiences from the past. One of these activities
includes visiting the Exmouth Museum, planned for the near
future.
Poet in Residence
W
e still have our resident
poet, John Ludlow, who
regularly creates an
entertaining spot for us. We remain
most grateful to him. John thinks up
an ode every week that he personally
delivers in amusing and interesting
ways with great aplomb!

Dining in Style
T
here is no change, either, in our provision of a daily a meal
in the Dining Room. Of course, we made much of our annual
Christmas Lunch, with the school choir, music and a visit
from a seasonal character – you might guess who that was!
Come in and discuss how you, or someone you know, can join in
our activities in 2013!
Who is Santa’s little helper?
A Special Visitor
A
special activity recently held at Landon House were visitors from the Donkey Sanctuary – a lovely, gentle and
well behaved donkey, called Juniper was brought along.
The visit from Juniper (who walked around the room led by his carers stopped “to say Hello” to every client). This
certainly put a smile on people’s faces and brought back memories for one of our clients who used to work on a
farm . One of the ladies who used to be a regular visitor to the Donkey Sanctuary brought some Mints in as a treat
for Juniper and he really enjoyed them!
It was certainly an enjoyable and interesting activity, which we will hopefully repeat later in the year!

HOME services
H
ello, my name is Deborah Hipkiss and I am responsible for management of Home
Services here at Age Concern Exmouth. I've been in post for several months now.
Last summer I was asked to start calling on a couple, who at that time were a little reluctant to
receive help.
It started with me going for an hour a week to do their general cleaning but as they began to
trust me they started asking me to do a little more.
After a couple of months I was going twice a week, now I was carrying out their shopping,
cleaning, washing and also finding time for that all important 'social', a cup of tea and a chat!
Age Concern Exmouth have been calling for almost a year now and the other day right out of the blue they said how
lucky and grateful they were that Age Concern had come into their lives. They told me this was just at the right time
for them (although they admitted they were reluctant at first!) and they thanked me very much for everything we do
for them and they don't know where they would be without us.
I wanted to share this story with you because although people may feel reluctant and don't think they need help
sometimes they actually do!
But what we understand here at Age Concern Exmouth is that reluctance is a perfectly normal reaction to change.
Often change is something that many people do not welcome particularly if they feel they have reached a point in
life where they didn't think they would ever be.
Most people are not alone. It is usual to think this way. From Age Concern Exmouth I want to reassure you that many
people arrive at the point where a little help and support can go along way. It can be reassuring to have someone you
get to know call in on a regular basis, it can save some of the physical work needed to keep on top of housework, it
provides access to a world outside of the home. It can be the gateway to all sorts of social interaction and stimulation
as well as access to a whole range of free Information advice.

HOME services
Don’t Be Afraid To Ask
A
s part of my role as Home
Services Manager, I visit
people’s homes to carry
out needs assessments. Here we
establish together exactly the
wants and needs for the
household. This may focus around
our domestic service or our Carer's
take a break sitting service.
Recently I called on a lady who
asked if we could do a sitting
service for her husband so she
could go out on a Thursday
afternoon. We chatted for a while
and it transpired that her husband
would need personal care*
(*Personal Care is where physical
assistance is required in such
areas as toileting or bathing etc) It
is something Age Concern is
unable to provide.
I apologised and said we wouldn't
be able to provide the personal
care element but offered the
names of some agencies who may
be able to help.
She thanked me for my time and
help and I left.
Later that afternoon the lady called
me to let me know she had called
one of the agencies I'd mentioned
and that they could do the sitting
for her husband. Once again she
thanked me for my help and for
listening.
I was happy to be able to help.
Although we could not provide
exactly what she wanted we were
able to signpost her in the right
direction, this is just part of the
service that Age Concern provide.
So never be afraid to ask, we may
be able to help in ways you hadn't
thought of!
Client Reviews
M
y role as Home Services Manager also involves me in carrying out client reviews.
This gives me opportunity to meet directly with clients and it allows me to provide the opportunity for a client
to tell me what they really think about our service. I want to hear their views on our service and our staff. Are they
happy? Does the service do all they want it to do? Or can we do more? What else can we do for a client?
So when I make an appointment to come and see you please feel free to ask me anything you want to. Anything at all
where I may be able to help assist or support you with your wants and needs. This may be those other little jobs our
Home Support staff don't currently do, maybe ironing, shopping or help with sorting cupboards etc. Home Support at
Age Concern is not just about domestic help , we offer a range of many things and if we cant help with some things we
will endeavour to find you someone who can.
I look forward to meeting you.

VOLUNTEERING and support
A Day In The Life of a Volunteer
I
have been a volunteer at Age Concern Exmouth in the Information
and Advice Centre in Rolle Street for just over three years.
I find the work satisfying and challenging at the same time, no two
days are ever the same you really never know when someone steps
through the door what you are going to be asked.
It could be a finance/pension question a leaflet request or simply
booking for one of our monthly coach trips or perhaps needing new
hearing aid battery or one or more of the many other varied
questions/services that are clients come in for,
At other times there is always the telephone to be answered and the updating of our many leaflets, renewing if
necessary and updating or organising our Attendance Allowance volunteers to visit clients in their own homes,
helping them with completing their applications, and many, many too numerous to list other duties we as a team
under Maria’s guidance carry out on a day to day basis. I am one of three volunteers in Information and Advice.
I really enjoy my time volunteering at Age Concern Exmouth on two main levels, the first is I really am interested in
the work they do locally for our community, the second is that its good to be able to put something back into our local
community as a volunteer. I also think it good to keep you brain active and take on new information and challenges
and embrace life.

INFORMATION and advice centre
A
t 36A Rolle Street we hold lots of Information & Advice leaflets, why not pop in,
have a browse or make an appointment to get a benefits check. You could be
missing out on claiming benefits that you are entitled to!
Call Maria on 271242 for assistance.
W
orking in Information & Advice we get asked all sorts of queries and requests for information. 99.9 % we can
answer most people queries, in the event we can't we generally are able to 'signpost' to other agencies that
may be better placed to advise.
Often a simple leaflet request leads to something more specific which requires some additional assistance. For
example:3 months ago I had a phone call from a lady who was recently bereaved after 48 years of marriage and was
extremely lonely. We set up a Home Services Assistant to go and clean for her and to have a chat. After a few
months I carried out a home visit and found out that she was claiming no benefits. We did a benefits check
together and now this lady is some £240.00 a month better off.
But things have worked out even better, she now goes on our Coach Trips and has made new friends.
That is just one example of a success story that makes all of us at Age Concern Exmouth feel that we are all doing a
worthwhile and valued job, for me that was a great success!!

from our Landon House day centre, this ode
was inspired while John was watching a TV

Colour Me ...
See the wounds, the blood and gore
Situations I dread
Turn my back, shut my eyes and ignore
Colour me .... Red
Hear the orchestral string section
Mellow in the violin and cello
I hear , with much affection
Colour me .... Yellow
See the sheen of gleaming marble
Reflecting the Sun's ray of light
See the dust and chalk walls of Kabul
Colour me ..... White
Can you smell the odour of Victorian musk
And the foreboding dark side of town
Can you see the lengthening shadows of dusk
Colour me ... Brown
I've vivid violets in my flower bed
Tread neatly and careful
Grown by seed that I've bred
Colour me ... Purple
'Lapus Lazulae', like sky and sea
is mined in a blinding hue
An intensity to the 'nth degree'
Colour me ... Blue
Eyes, green with envy and ill-will
Troubled minds, all lean and mean
I see looks that could kill

Ode Job Man
Your workman arrived on time today,
and started work without delay.
As he searched for his forms
And his papers rustled,
I couldn’t help but notice his rippling muscles.
I offered him tea and perhaps a nibble
He bent to pick up his tools
And I tried not to dribble.
The job didn’t take long – to my dismay
But I have really had a lovely day.
