Welcome to Exmouth
Where the locals are friendly
If you’re looking for a holiday full of wonder with magnificent landscapes, pristine beaches and nature in
all its glory, both in the water and on dry land, then look no further than Exmouth and Coral Bay, Western
Australia.
A holiday in Exmouth and Coral Bay offers access to the
rugged beauty of the Cape Range National Park contrasted
with the aquatic splendour of the world renowned Ningaloo
Marine Park.
Cape Range National Park offers visitors the magnificent
landscapes and rugged gorges of Cape Range anticline,
camping, exploring, bush walks, wildflowers, birds, reptiles
and mammals.
At nearly 300km long Ningaloo Reef is Australia’s longest
fringing coral reef and the closest reef to land in the world.
Easily accessible the reef is at some places only metres
from shore. Simply don your mask and snorkel or swim
out in the shallow waters to see a variety of marine life.
Water activities include fishing, diving, snorkelling,
swimming with the fantastic Whale Shark or watching
Humpback whales.
If you prefer not to get wet, you can take a glass bottom
boat tour, scenic flight, quad or safari tour with specialist
local guides.
Cape Range National Park and Ningaloo Marine Park are
now listed as a World Heritage Area - come and see for
yourself why.

Ningaloo Coast World Heritage Area
Ningaloo Marine Park
The boundary of the Ningaloo Coast World Heritage
area includes NINGALOO MARINE PARK, CAPE RANGE
NATIONAL PARK, Jurabi and Bundegi Coastal Parks,
Muiron Island Nature Reserve and Muiron Island Marine
Management Area and Learmonth Air Weapons Range.
To ensure their long term survival it is important that the area
remains a viable rookery for sea turtles; please check with DPaW
or the Exmouth Visitor Centre for the correct guidelines to follow
when viewing turtles.
The NINGALOO REEF AWAITS YOU.
The World Heritage listed NINGALOO REEF has gained an
impressive reputation as one of Earth’s last ocean paradises.
Take a dive with hundreds of tropical fish, view colourful coral
and swim with the world’s biggest fish, the Whale Shark. Adults
have an estimated average length of 9.7 metres. This distinctively
marked shark is a filter feeder that is harmless to humans. Nothing
can compare to the thrill of swimming beside a Whale Shark.
These docile creatures visit Ningaloo Reef each year between
April and June. Move this paragraph down and incorporate “*”
this paragraph otherwise seems repetitive.
NINGALOO REEF is one of the largest fringing reefs in the world
and unlike many others you can get to it just by stepping off the
beach.
The NINGALOO MARINE PARK stretches nearly 300km
kilometres from Bundegi Reef near the town of Exmouth to Red
Bluff at Quobba station north of Carnarvon. It reaches nearly
20 kilometres seaward, encompassing a massive 5,355 square
kilometres of ocean with 500 species of tropical fish and 220
species of coral.
Slip on a snorkel or diving gear and swim with graceful Manta
Rays. View dolphins and schools of brightly coloured fish in the
clearest turquoise water imaginable. “*”
NINGALOO COAST WORLD HERITAGE AREA is one of the
world’s major breeding areas for sea turtles. Most visiting species
are endangered.

Ningaloo Coast World Heritage Area
Cape Range National Park
The boundary of the Ningaloo Coast World Heritage
area World Heritage listing recognises the outstanding
universal value of Ningaloo Marine Park and Cape Range
National Park’s diverse and abundant marine life, it’s
amazing cave fauna, birds, reptiles and the spectacular
contrast between the colourful underwater scenery, and
the arid and rugged land of the Cape Range anticline.
It’s not all about the water in the Ningaloo Coast World Heritage
area. CAPE RANGE NATIONAL PARK encompasses 50,581 ha
of the Cape Range peninsula. The dissected limestone range,
with its deep canyons and precipitous ridges, provides a dramatic
contrast to the vista of the adjacent coral reef.
GETTING TO THE NINGALOO COAST WORLD HERITAGE AREA
IS EASY. SEE YOU SOON!
Walk Trails – Cape Range National Park
Caution: Between November and March days with extreme
temperature exceeding 50c° (122ºF) are common. Walking these
trails can be extremely hazardous and it is highly recommended
that you do not undertake these walks during this period.
CAPE RANGE NATIONAL PARK is of a high conservation value
and biologically rich with representative flora and fauna from
temperate, tropical and arid bio-geographic provinces.
Many plants and animals endemic to the peninsula have evolved
in relative isolation during periods when it was separated from the
mainland, including troglodytic (cave dwelling) species.
The CAPE RANGE NATIONAL PARK is home to a large variety of
wildlife, including kangaroos, rock-wallabies, emus, reptiles and
a variety of birds. Opportunities to view wildlife in their natural
environment is enjoyed by many visitors to the National Park and
the adjacent NINGALOO MARINE PARK.
Cape Range is rich in fossils. Pleistocene coral reefs representing
several periods of coral reef development provide an unusual
opportunity for the study of the reef development process. Range
top caves contain valuable terrestrial fossil materials.

winds up to 500 km per hour and is the tallest man made
structure in the Southern Hemisphere.
Fast Facts
The Town of Exmouth
The naming of the town of Exmouth was taken from the ocean
adjacent to the town site, the Exmouth Gulf. Exmouth Gulf was
named by Captain Phillip Parker King when he was surveying the
northern coastline on February 18, 1818, after Edward Pellew
1757 -1833 (the first Viscount Exmouth).
Location
Exmouth is situated 1270 km north of Perth with a population of
approx 2500 permanent residents.
Climate
With no wet season, the region has a dry climate with hot
summers and mild winters. Exmouth has around 320 days of
sunshine each year.
Renowned for being one of the world’s most treacherous
coastlines, a decision was forged after the Marine Board of
Enquiry investigated into the Wreck of the Mildura in 1907, to
locate two lighthouses, the Vlamingh Head Lighthouse in 1911
and Point Cloates lighthouse in 1912 on the Ningaloo Coast.
Vlamingh Head Lighthouse was later decommissioned in 1967.
In subsequent years pearl luggers visited the area from Broome
and during World War II a secret base was established under the
code-name Operation Pot Shot.
During the 1950s the area was known for fishing, pastoral leases
and oil exploration. The first significant flow of oil on the Australian
mainland was found at Rough Range.
Coach Services
Coach services from Perth to Exmouth, return, or Exmouth to
Broome, return, are available. For further information please
contact the Exmouth Visitor Centre on 08 9949 1176.
Road Access
In 1963 an agreement between Australia and the US was
established, and in 1967 the Naval Communication Station at
Exmouth was built. Officially renamed in 1968 as the US Naval
Communication Station Harold E. Holt, in honour of the late
Australian Prime Minister, the primary mission of the facility was
that of a radio relay station, passing messages between Australian
and US command centres, submarines and surface ships.
Travelling from the south to Exmouth along the North West Coastal
Highway, drive 152km north of Carnarvon and take the next turn
left after the Minilya Roadhouse onto the Minilya-Exmouth Road
– Exmouth is a further 200km. Travelling from the north, turn off
the North West Coastal Highway 110km south of the Nanutarra
Roadhouse onto Burkett Road. From here its 80km to the Minilya
– Exmouth Road. At this junction, turn right to Exmouth (89 km).
Today, as an Australian Naval Communication Station it continues
to play a vital role in the secure operation of the Australian
submarine fleet. The US Navy also maintains involvement, through
continuing use of the VLF communications and contributing to
operational costs and upgrades.
Airlines
The world’s largest Very Low Frequency (VLF) transmitter, and
the 2nd tallest structure in the Southern hemisphere, Tower Zero
is located at Area A-VLF.
6
Qantas and Virgin Airlines operate return flights from Perth to
Learmonth Airport, 37kms from Exmouth and 120km from Coral
Bay. A shuttle bus meets each flight to transfer you to Exmouth
$25* per adult $10* per child *Prices subject to change without
notice. Services from Learmonth or Exmouth to Coral Bay require
a prior booking and are subject to request. Please contact the

at Coral Bay or between May to
November in Exmouth. They migrate
in huge schools and snorkelers and
divers can take the opportunity to
swim with these playful creatures.
(And the occasional Kangaroo)
These friendly natives are our very
own welcoming committee to the
area. They are WILD, so please show
them respect, give them the right of
way and DO NOT feed them!
Humpback Whales
July – November
The Humpback Whales visiting the
Ningaloo Reef, are the fifth largest of
the great whales and can weigh up to
40 tonnes. You can watch them roll
around, slapping their tails and fins.
There are viewing points at Vlamingh
Head Lighthouse, Town Beach and
Bundegi Beach, or join one of the
tours or sunset cruises to see these
magnificent creatures.
Coral Spawning
March & April
Coral spawning is when coral
releases eggs and sperm into the
surrounding ocean. This occurs
approximately 10 to 12 days after the
full moon in both March and April.
Fishing all year round
You don’t need to be experienced to
catch a fish, anyone can. For proof
see what the lads on page 13 have
caught for their dinner!
Reef Sharks
September – February
Skeleton Beach in Coral Bay, is a
known nursery area for the Reef
Sharks. Annually around this time,
large numbers of Black Tip Reef
Sharks can be found inhabiting the
shallows. White Tip and Grey Reef
Sharks have also been sighted.
Whale Sharks
April to July
Exmouth and Coral Bay provide an
opportunity of a lifetime – to swim
with the majestic Whale Shark.
Whale Sharks generally arrive just
after the second coral spawning
and stay until the end of June or
beginning of July.
Turtles
November - February
The turtle nesting season runs
from November to February. There
are three known species of turtles
in the Ningaloo Reef; the Green
(most common), Loggerhead and
Hawksbill. For details on turtle
activities & tours contact the friendly
staff at the Exmouth Visitor Centre to

Beaches
Bundegi Beach
Life’s a beach
If it’s pristine beaches you’re after you have come to
the right place! The Exmouth coastline offers visitors an
endless array of stunning, unspoilt, deserted beaches
which cater to everyone’s needs: swimming, snorkelling,
sunbathing, water sports and fishing.
Town Beach
Just 1km from the Exmouth town site, you’ll find Town Beach.
Ideal for morning walks and beachcombing. Town Beach is tidal
so swimming on high tide is recommended however low tide is
great for playing in the shallows. Town Beach also provides 4WD
access northbound along the beach.
Surfers Beach
Located 12 km north of Exmouth, Bundegi Beach marks the
start of the Ningaloo Marine Park and World Heritage area and
is a great place for swimming, snorkelling and fishing. A boat
launching facility is located at the southern end of the beach and
the fish cleaning station is also provided for your convenience at
the north end of the beach near the toilet facilities.
Lighthouse Bay
Access tracks along the Mildura Wreck Road into Lighthouse
Bay provide entrance to a variety of beaches suitable for fishing,
surfing, swimming or simply just relaxing. At the end of the road
discover the wreck of the SS Mildura, a cattle ship destroyed when
it clipped the reef during a cyclone in 1907. Timbers and irons
were salvaged and used in renovations for Yardie Homestead.
The hull sat on the reef undisturbed until World War II when allied
planes used it for bombing practice! These days it provides an
ideal sanctuary for baby Sharks.
(otherwise known as Dunes Beach)
Jurabi Coastal Reserve
On the tip of the North West Cape, 17kms north of Exmouth
you’ll find a reef break which is popular amongst local surfers but
not recommended for beginner surfers. To get there take Yardie
Creek Road west then turn onto Mildura Wreck Road.
The Jurabi Coastal Reserve offers a variety of beaches and
diverse marine habitats to discover and explore. From low
scrubland down to pristine white beaches, rocky shorelines and
scattered reefs there is an amazing array of terrestrial and marine
creatures inhabiting this unique coastline. One such creature is
the marine turtle.
Visit the Jurabi Turtle Centre, a collaborative project between
the Shire of Exmouth and Department of Parks and Wildlife.
Constructed in recognition of the urgent need to minimise the
impact of human disturbance on nesting marine turtles along the
Ningaloo coast, it is an unmanned outdoor interpretive centre and
is open to the public at all times. The centre houses a creative
range of materials and provides information on turtle biology,
threats, conservation measures and the correct way to observe
nesting turtles without disturbing them.
10

Beaches
Turtle Rookeries
During the summer months turtles nest on mainland beaches
at Ningaloo. The beaches between Hunters and Mauritius are
popular rookeries for three threatened species of marine turtles
– the Green, Loggerhead and Hawksbill.
If you would like to view nesting turtles it is recommended that you
visit the Jurabi Turtle Centre to familiarise yourself with the code of
conduct. The Department of Parks and Wildlife conducts guided
Turtle Interaction Evenings that start at the centre from December
to February – ask the friendly staff at the Exmouth Visitor Centre
for more information.
By participating in a guided tour, you are actively helping to
conserve marine turtles and will have a better opportunity to view
marine turtles nesting in the natural environment. Pick up a copy
of the Turtle Watchers’ Code of Conduct from the Department of
Parks and Wildlife office or the Exmouth Visitor Centre.
Mauritius
After an all over tan? Mauritius Beach was declared a “clothing
optional beach” in 1999 and is located just past the Vlamingh
Head Lighthouse.
Cape Range National Park
Tantabiddi
Located 36km from Exmouth, Tantabiddi Beach provides the
main boat launching area on the west side of the Cape. A coral
viewing boat operates from here year round, bookings are able to
be made with the Exmouth Visitor Centre. A fish cleaning station
is also provided for your convenience.
Turquoise Bay
The highlight of the Cape Range National Park beaches, Turquoise
Bay is aptly named. 63km from Exmouth, this crystal clear lagoon
offers white sandy beaches and easy access to great snorkelling.
A shaded picnic located between the beach and the carpark area
allows you to enjoy it in comfort.
Sandy Bay
Great for families, the shallow clear waters of the bay, along with
its wide beaches and shaded tables provide a perfect picnic
spot. Sandy Bay is ideal for swimming, land based fishing or
kite surfing.
South of Tantabiddi, beaches in the Cape Range National Park
form part of the coastline of the Ningaloo Marine Park. With some
of the best beaches in WA, here you can relax by the sea or enjoy
a swim or snorkel in turquoise waters. The road through to Yardie
Creek is sealed and suitable for two wheel drive although the creek
crossing and access further south is four wheel drive only. There
are numerous unsealed beach access tracks throughout the
National Park - all offer access to deserted pristine beaches, for
a comprehensive map, call into the Exmouth Visitor Centre or the
Department of Parks and Wildlife.

Ningaloo Marine Park
Jump into Nature’s Aquarium
It’s the natural wonders of the Ningaloo Marine Park that
attract people from throughout the world to Exmouth. The
Park protects one of Australia’s most important tracts of
reef - the Ningaloo Reef. What makes it even more special
is its close proximity to the coast - in many areas it is only
5-10m offshore. What’s more, the Ningaloo Reef protects
a lagoon that is on average only 2-4m deep and brimming
with fish and coral.
Snorkelling Sites
There are limitless snorkelling sites along the Ningaloo coastline
and a variety of ways to access them. You can experience the
Ningaloo Reef from a dive boat, catamaran, coral viewing boat,
sea kayak or by simply snorkelling from the beach.
Our coral is very fragile, please do not stand on it or break pieces
off. Never remove any items including: shells, corals, plants or
wildlife from the area. Your assistance to preserve this area for
future generations to enjoy is greatly appreciated – Thank you.
Lakeside
Offering a great snorkelling spot for families and swimmers of
average fitness and capability. From the carpark walk 500m south
(left) along the beach past the first Sanctuary Zone marker, the
coral is located between the shore markers and the 2 water bouys.
Turquoise Bay
A very popular location for viewing corals and marine wildlife,
however waters in this area are known to move constantly,
beginner swimmers should stay closer to shore.
Turquoise Bay Drift Snorkel
Considered to be one of the best snorkel sites in the area, this drift
snorkel is definitely worth a go! From the ‘Drift Loop Car Park’,
walk south (left) along the beach approximately 100m to enter the
water. Swim straight out and let the current carry you north over
colourful coral formations before exiting near the sandbar.
12
Be aware that this area can possess strong currents with large
waves and high tides contributing to the strength of the current,
stronger currents may be experienced on high tide so low tide
may be another option.
Inexperienced swimmers should not swim or snorkel in strong
currents, rather seek the services of licensed tour operators.
Oyster Stacks
This site is great for fish life and is to only be accessed on a
high tide of 1.2m or higher. Take care entering the water as the
shoreline is rocky with some sharp oyster shelled areas. Enter
the water at the end of the walking track and snorkel either north
or south.
These sites can be reached by conventional vehicle but for the
more adventurous, there are sites that can only be reached by
4WD e.g. south of Yardie Creek. Snorkelling gear can be hired at
many locations throughout Exmouth and Coral Bay.
For information on this and a variety of tours on offer contact the
Exmouth Visitor Centre on 08 9949 1176.
Safe Snorkelling in Ningaloo Marine Park
For your safety, plan your snorkel before you enter the water:
Do not snorkel alone. Swim and snorkel with an experienced
person.
Avoid snorkelling in strong currents which are the result of
the build up of water in the lagoon between the reef and the
shore. Large waves spilling over the reef and a high tide level
increases water in the lagoon that needs to escape through
the passages in the reef.
Assess the coastline and the current from the shore before
entering the water. Identify access and exit points and
landmarks to help orientate you.
Take care along rocky shores when entering and exiting the
water. Refrain from fitting fins until you are in the water.
Snorkel at high tide when there is sufficient water over the reef
to avoid collision with corals and injury. If you need to rest,
choose sandy areas only to stand and rest on. Do not stand
on or handle corals.
Do not touch corals and other marine life. Some plants and
animals sting or bite if disturbed or provoked. A ‘no touch’
approach is safest for you and the marine life.
If in doubt, don’t go out!

World of the Giants
Exploring the Deep
Ningaloo Reef is one of the world’s largest coral fringing
reefs, teeming with marine life for you to discover. The
various diving and snorkelling tours that depart from
Exmouth and Coral Bay will take you on the experience
of a lifetime.
Marine LIfe
But it’s not just Whale Sharks. Humpback Whales visit between
June and November and many of the females give birth in the
deeper offshore waters.
Manta Rays are in the area year round but in more prolific
numbers between May and October. Marine turtles, including
Green, Loggerhead and Hawksbills, inhabit Ningaloo all year and
begin their nesting season around November.
Add to this the 220 species of coral and over 500 species of fish
and the Ningaloo Reef is an impressive diving destination year
round!
Whale Sharks
Every year from April to July, following the mass spawning of
coral, the world’s biggest species of fish congregate in the
Ningaloo Marine Park - Whale Sharks! These massive filter
feeders can grow up to 12m long and have a life span up to 70
years The name “whale shark” comes from the fish’s physiology,
being as large as some species of whales and also a filter feeder
like Baleen Whales but is actually a shark with several rows of
redundant teeth. The Ningaloo Reef is one of the only places they
appear regularly in large numbers.
The chance to snorkel with these gentle giants is the opportunity
of a lifetime, attracting visitors from all over the world. Full Day
tours are available to snorkel with Whale Sharks during the
season from both Exmouth and Coral Bay. Tours are available for
Adults, Aged/Disability Concession holder & Families, beginner
swimmers should advise the operator when booking.

Dive Sites
West Side
Diving off the west side of North West Cape offers an amazing
range of sites covered in large and small creatures on reef
structures that are quite different to the sites further north.
Muiron Islands
The tranquil environment of these two uninhabited islands, just 9.8
nautical miles off the tip of the North West Cape, is teeming with
marine life. In waters of depths 3-20m just off the shoreline you’ll
discover coral gardens made up of both hard and soft corals.
There are a variety of dive sites off the Muirons that provide an
unforgettable experience. Mating turtles are a common sight from
November to February and giant Potato Cod are best seen here
during the spring and summer months.
Note: Camping on the islands requires permission from the Shire
of Exmouth and the DEC. Overnight trips with tour operators are
available.
Lighthouse Bay
There are a number of excellent dive sites in the Lighthouse Bay
area, including Blizzard Reef, the Labyrinth and Helga’s Tunnels.
Depths at both Blizzard and Labyrinth range from 12-18m while
Helga’s has a maximum depth of 30m.
There are pristine coral formations and an array of beautiful
tropical fish along with Reef Sharks and schools of pelagic fish.
Turtles are seen almost daily.
West side diving usually ranges from just north of the Tantabiddi
boat ramp south to the Mandu Wall area. Huge Potato and Rankin
Cod, turtles, sharks and schooling pelagics patrol the blue waters
while Parrotfish, Damsels, Butterfly and Angelfish of all colours
decorate the outstanding hard coral reef structures.
Ledges, small caves and plentiful hidey holes provide housing for
Moray Eels, Shrimps, Pipefish and many other animals.
Manta Rays cruise this area from mid May and Humpback Whales
start showing up in July to November.
Special tours are offered to see these creatures and many add
the opportunity to dive or snorkel the reef too!
Combine diving on the West Side with the closer dives (usually
termed “local reef” by operators) to truly get a feel for the
incredible diversity Exmouth can offer.
Dive sites range from 6m - 30m with many sites being suitable
for all level of divers - this area is only accessible during certain
months of the year (Mar - Aug).
Navy Pier
The Navy Pier is the perfect complement to your Ningaloo Reef
diving holiday. The Navy Pier consistently ranks among the Top
Ten Dive Sites in the world.
www.scubatravel.co.uk/topdives.html
Home to an outstanding variety of marine life from schooling
Trevally, Snapper and Barracuda to giant Queensland Gropers,
you’ll also discover colourful reef fishes including Angelfish,
Butterfly Fish, Moorish Idols and Bannerfish.
As the Pier remains a working Defence facility, diving there is
available only through a licensed dive centre. This site has a
maximum depth of 15m and is suitable for a wide range of divers.
For more information or to book a tour call the Exmouth Visitor
Centre on 08 9949 1176.

Fishing Paradise
Hook Line and Sinker
With the Continental Shelf only kilometres offshore,
fishing and the Ningaloo Reef go hand in hand. There
are many opportunities for beach, reef and game fishing
in the diverse environment of Ningaloo. While there are
some sanctuary zones where fishing is strictly prohibited,
there are many other areas in the Marine Park where the
fishing is superb.
Beach fishing can produce surprising reef species - Whiting,
Flathead, Queenfish, Bream and Mangrove Jack just to name a
few, while fishing in Exmouth Gulf turns up a variety of estuarine
species. Mud-crabbing and Squid-fishing are also popular
activities and along with five different species of Lobster there is
something for everyone.
Boat Launching Facilities
Exmouth has three boat launching areas. The Exmouth Boat
Harbour is located 3km south of the Exmouth townsite and
offers concreted boat ramps within the sheltered wall of the
marina. Other boat ramps are located 13km north of town at
Bundegi Beach, and 36km from town (just north of the Cape
Range National Park boundary) at Tantabiddi.
Please contact the Department of Parks and Wildlife on (08)
9947 8000 or visit the office for information on sanctuary
zones (fines apply for illegal fishing in sanctuary zones) or the
Exmouth Visitor Centre on 08 9949 1176 for any information
on fishing or tours available.
Professional charter boats depart Exmouth daily. They offer a
range of tours including half and full day fishing trips, as well as
being available for private charter. Ningaloo is also recognised as
the premier game-fishing destination in Western Australia.
In March each year, Exmouth hosts the Gamex Tournament
which always produces some fantastic - often record-breaking catches (a “Tag and Release” policy is adhered to).
There are over 30 different game fish species including Black &
Blue Marlin, Swordfish, MahiMahi, Broadbill and Sailfish.
A variety of succulent reef fish including North West Snapper, Blue
Bone, Coral Trout, Red Emperor, Spanish Mackerel is on offer.

Cape Range National Park
Mangrove Bay
West Side
Cape Range National Park is a spectacular place of rugged
limestone ranges, breathtaking deep canyons and 60km of
pristine beaches. The Park, managed by the Department
of Parks and Wildlife, covers some 50,581 hectares, with
its northern boundary just 40km from Exmouth.
Wildlife is abundant with a variety of birds, Emus, Euros and Red
Kangaroos commonly sighted. In ancient times the range was
isolated as rising sea levels inundated lower lying areas.
As a result some species of plants and animals are endemic to
the area including the Sturt Desert Pea.
Surveys have recorded over 630 species of flowering plants on
the peninsula. No better time is there to see this splendour than in
late winter when the wildflowers bloom.
A park entry fee is to be paid to enter Cape Range National Park.
Various National Park Passes are available from the Department
of Parks and Wildlife office and the Exmouth Visitor Centre. The
entry fee can also be paid at the Park entry gate.
Camping
There are in excess of 90 camping bays in the Cape Range
National Park, most of which are accessible by conventional
vehicle. These sites offer easy access to the coast for swimming,
snorkelling, fishing and more. Caravans are welcome, however
there are few facilities - no power, showers or cooking facilities.
Many of the sites have toilets and picnic tables but you must
be fully self-sufficient. No wood fires or pets are permitted in
the National Park and due to the arid nature of the country it is
essential to bring your own water.
16
This sanctuary zone includes a bird hide which overlooks a
lagoon area. A variety of birds roost in the lagoon at high tide
and many feed on small fish and other marine life in the shallow
waters. Closer inspection may reveal an Osprey or Brahminy Kite
perched above, surveying the coastline.
Milyering DiscoveryCentre
The Milyering Discovery Centre is in Cape Range National Park
52km from Exmouth. Interpretive displays, audio-visual facilities
and a library containing a wealth of information on the National
and Marine Parks are on hand to help visitors appreciate the
natural environment. National Park staffare also on site to assist
with enquiries.
A beach wheel chair is available with prior arrangement from the
Centre.
ManduMandu Gorge
A 3km walking trail allows access into this dry gorge. The trail
starts from the end of the ManduMandu track and follows the
northern ridge of the gorge, offering stunning panoramic views.
The trail leads down into the creek bed from where you follow the
base of the gorge back to the car park.
Yardie Creek
The sealed road through Cape Range National Park ends at Yardie
Creek – a spectacular multi-coloured gorge, with permanent
water fed from the ocean. Hidden within the safety of the sheer
gorge walls is a colony of Black-footed Rock Wallabies. With its
mangrove areas, Yardie Creek also provides roosting sites for
many bird species, while the sheltered waters are a sanctuary
for various marine animals. There is a relatively easy walking trail
along the top of the northern wall of the gorge or join a boat cruise
to fully discover its beauty.
To book a boat cruise drop into the Exmouth Visitor Centre or
phone 08 9949 1176.
www.exmouthwa.com.au
Cape Range National Park
East Side
There are two unsealed but fully formed roads that run
from the Minilya – Exmouth Road into the Cape Range
National Park. These provide spectacular scenic drives
with bush-walking opportunities.
Charles Knife Road Canyons
This scenic drive turns west off the Minilya – Exmouth Road, 21km
south of town. The mostly gravel 11km road follows the razorbacked ridges of the range and provides breathtaking downward
views into the stark multicoloured gorges.
There are several lookout points that provide fantastic photo
opportunities and a marked walking trail from Thomas Carter
Lookout. Contact the Department of Parks and Wildlife for a walk
trail guide for the Cape Range National Park.
Caution should be taken when bushwalking in the canyon areas
as walls are steep and can be dangerous due to loose surfaces.
Don’t go on your own and always let someone know where you’re
going and when you’ll be back. Cave areas are unsafe due to
oxygen deficiency - for your own safety please remain on existing
walking trails. Avoid lengthy hikes in summertime due to extreme
temperatures in the canyons, always carry plenty of water and
wear appropriate clothing and footwear.
Shothole Canyon Road
The access road to Shothole Canyon turns off the Minilya –
Exmouth Road, 14km south of the town.
The canyon was named after the shot holes left by seismographic
explosions during oil searches in the 1950s.
The gravel road meanders over dry creek beds along the gorge
floor and offers close examination of the colourful rock layers of
the sheer canyon walls. At the end of the 12km road there is a
picnic area and a short walking trail. Should you mention this is
now 4wD only

Wildflowers
3 Exmouth Gulf
Located on the eastern side of the peninsula. Bright red Yulbah
flowers are visible in summer and in winter the golden blossoms
of the Wattle are often interlaced with the purple blooms of the
MullaMulla. Common sights may include the Arid Wattle, Wild
Tomatoes, Hibbertia, Hairy Pepperflowers, Native Foxgloves and
the Sturt Desert Pea.
Blooming Marvellous
On first appearances the landscape of the North West
Cape region appears to be dry and harsh. However, on
closer inspection the land provides an amazing palate of
colours with most of these colours appearing in the form
of native plants. The semi-arid, calcium rich soils of the
North West Cape nurture an unusually large variety of
flora. More than 630 species have been recorded to date.
The unmistakable colour of pindan in the ranges is the perfect
backdrop for flowers such as the Sturt Desert Pea and the
fascinating Green Bird Flower. The native flora is not hard to spot,
however it always helps if you know where to look. Generally the
wildflower season in the area is from June – October. Proliferation
of wildflowers in the area however is dependent on rainfall
received. The Cape Range Trail begins at Minilya and proceeds to
the tip of the North West Cape before heading down the coastline
to Yardie Creek.
Below is a general guide or take a safari tour.
1 Minilya
Located on the North West Coastal Highway. Common sights
include: Featherflowers, Starflowers, Grevilleas and Hakeas on
the dunes, Banksias and Wattles on the ridges.
2 Coral Bay
Located off Minilya – Exmouth Road. The flat plains area
between Minilya and Lyndon River is good for spotting the shiny
dark leaves and white trumpet flowers of the Minilya Lily. Other
common sights include: Spinifex, Kurara, Cape Range Grevillea,
Thryplomene and Melaleuca.
18
4 Charles Knife Road
Located approximately 21km south of Exmouth, the unsealed
road into the canyons can be accessed by two wheel drive.
While travelling through and wondering in awe at the view, take
some time to look for the Cape Range Grevillea, Cape Range
Kurrajongs and several species of Verticordia.
5 Shothole Canyon Road
Located approximately 14km south of Exmouth. This unsealed
road accessible by two wheel drive will take you through the
bottom of the canyon. If you can tear your eyes away from the
spectacular rock formations take a look for the creamy white
flowers of the Eucalypt.
6 Northern Walk/Cycle Track
The 4.7km walk and cycle track to just before the Harold E. Holt
Naval Communication Station provides the opportunity to see
Rattlebush, clumps of Toucan flowers and Green Bird Flowers.
7 Vlamingh Head Lighthouse
Located 19km away from Exmouth. Apart from the spectacular
views of the reef and sunsets from the lighthouse you may also
see Featherflowers, Starflowers, Broombushes, Pituri, Silky
Pimelea and the Bird Flower.
8 Cape Range National Park
Located approximately 40km from Exmouth and extends for
another 60km. While travelling through the park keep your eyes
peeled for Sturt’s Desert Pea, Dampiera, Ashburton Peas, Hairy
Pepperflowers, Stackhousia, Indigo, Yardie Creek Morning Glory,
Bloodwoods, Wild Cotton, Flannel Bush and Rock Ficus. After
rain you may spot a white Minilya Lily in the Pilgramunna area.

Coral Bay
Perfect, Pristine and
Protected
The landing of the schooner “Maud” in 1884 is the earliest
recorded European activity in the Coral Bay area. Slightly
north of the Coral Bay township, it is now known as Maud’s
Landing. In 1896 a town site reserve was gazetted but it wasn’t
until 1915 that Maud’s Landing was officially proclaimed a
town.
Fish
Small schools of Fusiliers and other reef fish can be seen
darting back and forth in the shallows. Glass bottom and
semi-submersible boats offer tours from Bill’s Bay allowing
you to view these fish and their habitat.
Fishing
Coral Bay is a fishing paradise. Deep sea, bottom fishing,
beach fishing and game fishing are all available.
An area known as Bill’s Bay 3km to the south was becoming very
popular with locals and adventurous travellers. In 1968 formal
settlement began with the establishment of a hotel, caravan park and
service station.
The hotel was named the Coral Bay Hotel in reference to the beautiful
coral reef in the bay area. Subsequently the settlement became
known as Coral Bay.
Please contact the Department of Parks and Wildlife on (08)
9947 8000, visit the information hut on the Coral Bay foreshore
or the Exmouth office for information on sanctuary zones or
the Exmouth Visitor Centre on 08 9949 1176 for information on
fishing charters or tours.

Coral Bay
Beaches
Coral Bay is all about hitting the beach. A beach wheel chair is
available with prior arrangement from DEC.
Point Maud
Head to these locations in and around Coral Bay.
The northern most point of the sanctuary zone that encompasses
Bill’s Bay, the beach area around Point Maud offers fantastic
fishing.
Bill’s Bay
4WD Access
At the end of Coral Bay Road, the sheltered waters of Bill’s Bay
make for an ideal family swimming location. This is a sanctuary
zone so no fishing is permitted but the snorkelling is just amazing.
A 4WD track approximately 10km from Coral Bay allows for further
coastal access. The track eventually leads to Ningaloo Station at
the southern end of the Cape Range National Park. About 15km
from Coral Bay, check out Oyster Bridge and The Lagoon.
Purdy Point
Purdy Point is 500m south of Bill’s Bay. The red rock known
as Fletcher’s Hill marks the end of the fish sanctuary. This safe
swimming beach is also ideal for snorkelling. Please stay away
from the offshore channel as there is often a lot of boating activity.
Paradise Beach
Further south of Purdy Point, just before the easily identifiable
“Monks Head” outcrop, Paradise Beach is appropriately named
with its brilliant white sands and crystal clear waters.
Skeleton Bay
Head north from Bill’s Bay past the boat mooring area to the
sheltered Skeleton Bay. Its large area of waist deep water is
perfect for a relaxing swim – watch out for the steep drop off
further out.
From October to March, watch as up to 200 Reef Sharks frolic in
the shallow waters.
