GEORGE COOMBS, is the Research Horticulturist at Mt.

Cuba Center in Hockessin, DE. George is responsible for the
native plant evaluation program as well as for evaluating plants
for introduction to the trade. To date, he has authored trial
research reports on Coreopsis and Heuchera, with another
report on Baptisia to be published later this year. Before joining
Mt. Cuba Center, George worked in the nursery industry at both
the wholesale and retail levels.

ADAM GLAS, gardener at The Scott Arboretum of
A Symposium
for
Gardeners
Swarthmore College, oversees the International Clematis Trial,
the American Rose Trials for Sustainability (ARTS), as well as
the renovation of the Dean Bond Rose Garden. Before joining
the Scott team, he was a nursery manager at a local garden center, an estate gardener in his home state of Wisconsin, and a
graduate of the Professional Gardener Program of Longwood
Gardens. He also studied horticulture and landscape design at
the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.

HEIDI HESSELEIN, a 4th-generation nurserywoman, grew
up at Princeton Nurseries where she caught the horticulture
bug. After stints in California, she and her husband Richard
Hesselein, also a 4th-generation nurseryman, moved back to
Princeton Nurseries before starting their own Pleasant Run
Nursery in Allentown, NJ, in 1998. Heidi’s horticultural
interests are wide ranging as are her numerous associations in
many professional organizations and horticulture societies.
ERIC HSU is Plant Information Coordinator at Chanticleer
and runs a blog Plinth et al with a gardener friend. Before joining Chanticleer, he had stints at The Scott Arboretum of
Swarthmore College, the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard
University, and Polly Hill Arboretum on Martha’s Vineyard.
Eric has a BS degree from Cornell and Masters degrees from
the University of Reading, England, and the University of
Tasmania, Australia. He is a frequent contributor to various
publications including the RHS quarterly The Plantsman.

ONATHAN WRIGHT has been obsessed with plants/
gardens since childhood and began his career in horticulture at
age 13 at R-P Nurseries, one of the oldest family-run garden
centers in the country. He graduated from the Longwood
Gardens Professional Gardener Program, interned at
Heronswood Nursery in WA, and earned his BS in horticulture
from Temple University. In 2004 Jonathan joined the staff at
Chanticleer where he is responsible for designing, installing,
and maintaining the gardens surrounding the main house and its
terraces. Known for his exuberant plantings, he is also responsible for the Bulb Meadow, the Serpentine Gardem, and, most
recently, for a new elevated pathway that meanders from the
main terrace down the hill to the Serpentine Garden.

Great Natives from Mt. Cuba Center
George will present the top-performing plants from
recently completed Mt. Cuba trials on Heuchera and
Coreopsis, as well as promising selections from ongoing
trials of Baptisia, Monarda, Phlox, and Clematis. He also
will discuss some of his favorite native perennials that
deserve greater prominence in horticulture.

Hydrangeas: Beyond the Blues
Mophead hydrangeas are classic, high summer, flowering
shrubs, but they have been eclipsed by their equally ornamental cousins. A few of these relatives such as the oakleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia) and climbing
hydrangea (H. anomala ssp. petiolaris) are well established in our gardens, but how many of us grow the
Japanese mountain hydrangea (H. serrata) or aspera
hydrangea (H. aspera)? This talk will cover lesser known
members of the family and demystify their cultivation.

Gardens are rewarding when plantings have multiple
height levels, however finding trees to make an attractive
smaller canopy can be challenging. Learn about small
ornamental trees under 40’—interesting options, chosen
for their multi-season appeal, as food for wildlife, for their
native status, or for tolerance of challenging sites.
