Focus on feeders
Boost short TS time and high frequency by:
• Reducing time spent in the port: fewer terminals are
called at due to efficient bundling
• Promoting the coordination of terminal planning
Reduce costs for feeder operator:
• Moderate port dues policy
• TS discount on port dues
• Free lay-by berths
• Stimulate training for PEC
Diversity of feeder suppliers is ensured by
actively approaching and creating ties with
different feeder shipping companies.

Global connectivity
• All major shipping lines
have weekly services
calling at Rotterdam
• High ratio of “First/Last
Port of Call” services
• Large number of shortsea
& feeder connections

Hinterland key to success
Impact of quayside handling on hinterland
traffic
-16,000 TEU vessel (load/discharge in Europe: 32,000
TEU)
-Call size Rotterdam: 10,000 TEU
-Modal split: rail = 14% / barge = 31% / road = 25% /
feeder = 30 %
Hinterland traffic
-Rail
= 1,400 TEU equals 19 trains
-Barge
= 3,100 TEU equals 32 barges
-Road
= 2,500 TEU equals 1560 trucks
-Feeder
= 3,000 TEU equals 10 feeders
Theoretical assumption:
All modes of transport are fully loaded with cargo from
one overseas vessel. In reality the number of trains,
barges, trucks and feeder is even higher. Capacity used
for the different modalities: train = 75 TEU / barge = 96
TEU / trucks = 1.6 TEU / Feeder = 280 TEU
