Sarada Navaratri
Tuesday, October 13 to Thursday, October 22
Sarada Navaratri, is one of the most popular Hindu festivals spanning a
period of nine nights. The Goddess in the form of the Universal Mother
is commonly worshipped during the nine nights and ten days and hence
it is also known by the name of Devi Navaratri. Three aspects of the
Divine Mother, namely Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati are worshipped
during the nine nights, the tenth day being celebrated as Vijaya Dasami.
It is considered auspicious to start new ventures, especially in the field of
education, on Vijaya Dasami. Reading the Durga SaptaSati (also known as
Devi Mahaatmyam) and Ramayanam is also common during the Navaratri.
Special Pujas are scheduled in the temple during the ten days. Devotees
are encouraged to participate personally in the Sahasranama Archana
daily. (Sponsorship is not a requirement for participation in this archana)

Sarpabali
Wednesday, October 7, 2015
Sarpabali is the worship of 55 divine snakes (including Siva’s Vasuki and Vishnu’s
Adisesha) to ward off the bad effects of Sarpa Dosha, to help mitigate and eradicate the problems of skin diseases, to help people in search of life partners find
suitable spouses, for progeny (Putra Bhaagyam) and for the overall well-being of
all. (Sarpa Dosha may be present due to harm done to snakes and other reptiles
in the past births and due to other causes. Sarpa Dosha is recognized when all
the other grahas in one’s horoscope lie between Rahu and Ketu. Sarpa Dosha is
often a reason for late marriages). Turmeric powder, rice, milk, coconuts, fruits
and flowers are the ingredients generally brought by devotees for Sarpabali. For
the ingredients to be included in the Puja, they must be given to the priest before
the Puja starts. Sankalpam for the Puja (when devotees can mention to the priest
the problems to be overcome or desires to be fulfilled) will begin at 6:30 pm.
Sarpabali Puja will be performed in the Kerala Tantric style from 7:00 to 8:30 pm.
6:30 pm Sankalpam (when devotees can mention to the priest the
problems to be overcome or desires to be fulfilled)

Mahalaya Paksham
Anna Abhishekam to Lord Siva
The fortnight (15 days) preceding the Navaratri is known as
Mahalaya Paksham or Pitr Paksham. This period is important for
honoring our ancestors. Men, whose fathers have passed away, offer their
obeiscence (shraddha) to their ancestors during this period. The ceremony is
performed as a “Hiranya Shraddha,” details of which are available in the
temple. Due to the increasing awareness and faith in these rituals and in
order to meet the needs of maximum number of devotees the temple is
scheduling time slots of half hour duration for 3 or more hours per day
during this fortnight. Please call the manager to reserve your slot.
Anna Abhishekam is celebrated on the Poornima day during the Hindu
solar month of Tulaa. Annam (cooked rice) is offered as Abhishekam to
Lord Siva after the Abhishekams with the eleven usual ingredients. Lord
Siva is decorated with all the edible preparations, fruits and vegetables
after the Abhishekam. Devotees may bring fruits and flowers for the Alankaaram if they so desire. Details of the program are given below:
Monday, September 28 – Monday, October 12, 2015
A donation of $95 which includes Dakshina to the priest applies for this

Gauri Puja (Bathukamma Puja)
Sunday, October 11, 2015, at 3:00 pm
Bathukamma is a festival that is celebrated for nine days during navrathri. It starts on Mahalaya Amavasya and ends on
Ashwayuja Ashtami (also called ‘Pedha/Sadhula Bathukamma’). ‘Bathukamma’ in Telugu, is to ask the ‘goddess to come alive’.
There are many myths about the origin of this festival. Goddess Gauri killed ‘Mahishasura’ the demon after a fierce fight. After
this act, she went to sleep on the ‘Aswayuja Padyami’, due to fatigue. The devotees prayed to her to wake up, and she woke up
on the Dasami. The other being Bathukamma, as the daughter of the” Chola” King ‘Dharmangada’ and’Satyavati’. The king and
queen lost their 100 sons in the battlefield and prayed to Goddess Lakshmi to be born in their house, as their child. Goddess
Lakshmi heard their sincere prayers and chose to oblige them. When Lakshmi was born in the royal palace, all the sages came to bless her and they
blessed her with immortality “Bathukamma or Live Forever”
Preparing a Bathukamma is a folk art. Women start preparing Bathukamma from the afternoon. They cut the flowers leaving the
little length base and arrange them on a wide plate called Thambalam, and stack them up in a conical mound, decorated with a
Lotus or Pumpkin flower on top of the stack along with Gouramma (a symbolic idol of Gowri made of turmeric). On this special
occasion women dress up in traditional saree combining it with jewels. In the evening, women gather in large number with their
bathukammas in open place and starts singing by clapping their hands and revolving around the bathukammas. Guramma
(Gouri made of turmeric) is taken back from Bhathumma before immersion and every married woman applies a paste of this, on
her Mangala sutra that marks the solemnization of her marriage and also her husband is protected from all evils and ill fate.

SSVT hosts first ever Teach India! program on the East Coast,
drawing educators from around the region
SSVT sponsored and hosted the first ever Teach India! program on the East Coast organized by the Hindu American Foundation and California State University-Long Beach, the first partnership of its kind in the country. The workshop, held from Aug. 20-22 at SSVT was led by
CSU-Long Beach faculty members - and renowned history educators - Tim Keirn and Dave Neumann, and HAF’s education director Murali
Balaji. Keirn is also the chief reader for AP world history, while Neumann is director of the History Project.
The workshop focused on applying historical thinking to teaching approaches. Sessions featured HAF’s well-regarded Hinduism 101 program, discussions on how to read and interpret primary source documents such as the Upanishads, and lectures on Indian history from the
Harappan era to modern times. Though the workshop featured lessons on how to better understand Hinduism and Hindu texts, facilitators
also highlighted India’s rich cultural and religious history, including the development of Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, and the interactions
between Dharmic traditions and Abrahamic ones such as Christianity, Judaism, and Islam.
Throughout the workshop, SSVT staff and volunteers provided food and a comprehensive tour of the temple, one of the country’s most prominent Hindu institutions. The teachers also took part in the temple’s celebration of Onam, a Hindu festival originating from the Indian state of
Kerala.
Teachers who participated said their perspectives had been transformed by the combination of professional development training and cultural immersion. They were especially appreciative of SSVT’s generous hospitality, and the hard work of committed board members, staff, and
volunteers. Following the workshop, teachers wrote personal thank you notes to SSVT for its efforts in making their visit memorable.
“The facilitators had a complementary understanding of India, Hinduism, historical thinking, and pedagogy which made them incredibly
well-prepared to answer all our questions, often through multiple lenses,” said one teacher. “The tour of the SSV Temple helped coalesce a
more practical understanding of Hinduism within a larger historical context.”
“The setting, environment, and hospitality we received at SSVT made the difference,” added another teacher. “This is what made the experience unique from all the other workshops I have done. I will be able to tell all my students about what I experienced before I teach Hinduism.
It was an experience I will never forget.”
While Teach India! has run in California over the past few years, it was the workshop’s inaugural launch on the East Coast and the first time
that the workshop’s host - and chief sponsor - is a temple. Balaji credited the SSVT board for their long-term investment in the workshop,
which will add more teachers and expand to one week starting next year.
“This is the best example of how community investment in education can lead to a successful and sustainable program of this kind,” he said.
“HAF looks forward to continue collaborating with both Cal State-Long Beach and SSVT to ensure that this becomes a fixture in the region
and the first stop for teachers and administrators seeking to transform the way they think and teach about India and Hinduism.”

Poojya Swamiji Dayananda Saraswati
With great sadness and heavy heart, SSVT announces the mahaa samaadhi of Poojya Swamiji Dayananda
Saraswati at Rishikesh on 23rd September 2015. He was a doyen of sanyaasis of his generation, a spiritual leader
par excellence and a teacher of Advaita Vedanta to large number of people. He came from a lineage of Sanyaasis that started from Sri Adi Shankara, all the way to swamijis Tapovanam, Shivaananda and Chinmayaananda.
He established Arsha Vidya Gurukulam , which is a premier institution in the teaching of Vedanta to adults and
children. He has inspired number of people to follow in the path of spirituality and Vedanta.
He had a close association with SSVT and has given numerous discourses and Satsangs here at SSVT. He initiated
and conducted Bhagavad Gita Yagnam in 2006 at SSVT which was the first of its kind in the US. He used say that
walking through all the Sannidhaanams in SSVT is like walking through different Temples of South India.
Swamiji was involved in many religious and educational efforts. He started Hindu Dharma Acharya Sabha, an
organization that brought all the Acharyas from various sampradaayaas together. Swamiji promoted many
inter-religious dialog efforts. He started several Veda Paathashaalaas (traditional schools for teaching Vedas and
scriptural texts) that helped to preserve Vaideka & Aagama traditions that were facing extinction due to lack of
infrastructure.
His loss creates a great void in the Hindu spiritual world. Best way to pay tribute to him is to remember his
teachings and implement them in practice. SSVT is planning to have a memorial function to celebrate and
commemorate his life and his teachings. Details will be announced shortly.

May you move in harmony, speak in one voice; let your minds be in agreement; just as the ancient gods shared
their portion of sacrifice.

May our purpose be the same; may we all be of one mind. In order for such unity to form I offer a common
prayer.

May our intentions and aspirations be alike, so that a common objective unifies us all?
(Famous Rig Veda hymn 'Aikya mathya sukta' (R.V. X -191;1-4) emphasizes the unity of minds to create healthy
powerful organizations for prosperity and happiness of all and to promote fellow feeling and righteousness.
'Sangachadwam' means ‘let us progress, proceed or move on together’ and is an important message for all times).
Some words of wisdom from Pujya Swamiji Sri Dayananda Saraswathi:
•
There are not many Gods; there is not even one God; there is ONLY God.
•
All that is here, the entire creation including you and me is non-separatefrom God - Iswara.
•
Compassion is our nature, as is sympathy and empathy is the key that unlocks these emotions.
•
Expecting results from action is natural. What is important is the right attitude - Prasada Budhhi towards
the result of action, to accept all the results pleasant and the opposite, gracefully as Prasada from Iswara.
•
The inner maturity of a human being is not [only] in knowing what is right or wrong, but in knowing
what one loses when one does the wrong thing.
