The Bible is to be used to instruct the Christian in righteousness as found in 2 Timothy 3:16. If you have trusted and accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour then you are on the narrow way that leads to life (Matthew 7:14) and have received (imputed) God’s righteousness. And whilst on that journey the Christians needs to learn how to live a Godly life for his/her Lord and Saviour. Luke 6:46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? This evening at 5:30pm we will continue in our series, “From Now to Eternity”. Tonight we continue to look at our new state starting with eternal life. Questioning is a good thing Thank you for praying! -Tanya Emotional highs are not enough! by Jonathan Sarfati Published: 28 January 2016 (GMT+10) Some parents and pastors think that this abandonment starts with their children asking questions about the faith. However, without thinking how can they develop “the mind of Christ” (1 Corinthians 2:16)? Rather, we should be more worried if they are not asking questions. As we have discussed previously,2this is a likely sign that the children are just borrowing their parents’ or church’s faith. But a borrowed faith will not last long after leaving home. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind … Unanswered questions are a bad thing According to one of the leading Christian apologists outside CMI, Nancy Pearcey: (Romans 12:2) Studies find that the main reason people abandon their Christian upbringing is unanswered intellectual questions. The researchers were surprised; they expected to hear stories of relationship issues—people saying they’d been hurt or emotionally wounded. But the reason given most often by those who de-convert is that they could not get answers to their doubts and questions.3 CMI speakers often minister to churches with few young people.1 We often meet anguished parents 7|Page We know this from countless letters. E.g. a while We have answers—but they must get out ago, a teenage girl wrote to CMI: there! I would ask questions about absolutely everything around me, and that naturally spread to asking questions about the Bible. My family couldn’t answer me when I asked where ‘Mrs Cain’ came from, or how all the animals fit on the ark. … They discouraged me from asking questions about the Bible, telling me to ‘just believe’. … So I learned that the Bible was a nice storybook … over time, I became more of an agnostic, though I called myself a Christian to keep my family happy. Faith was fine for less intelligent people who needed that crutch, but I considered myself above that.4 Answered questions really make a difference Emotional intensity is not enough to block out questions. If anything, it leads teens to redefine Christianity in purely emotional terms—which leaves them vulnerable when they finally do face their questions.—Nancy Pearcey However, she continues [I] found the URL for CMI in a book I was researching, and browsing your Q&A page, I was surprised to find the answers to the questions I had been asking for over ten years in literally the first day I was at your site. … I found myself with no excuse to disbelieve. A few months later, I became a Christian. God has used your ministry to affect so many lives, mine among them.4 Now we have more creationist answers than probably at any time in history. But what use are they if people are not exposed to them? The same goes for defenses of Christianity in general, as Pearcey says: The good news is that in recent years, apologetics resources have become far more available. The bad news is that many churches continue to ignore those resources, treating Christianity as though it were primarily emotional.2 Creationist and general Christian apologetics are connected, since creation is foundational for Christianity, as shown in the new commentary on Genesis 1–11,The Genesis Account. This also shows that Christianity is a system of Total Truth,6 making objective claims about history, the future, and morality, as well as providing the basis for science. So Christianity is not limited just to a privatized belief with no effect on the real world. But likely thanks to our ministry in churches, which is possible thanks to your support, our material is getting to unexpected places. One example is a recent debate between Christian apologist Frank Turek and atheist Michael Shermer, Is Morality Better Explained by God or Science? Although Turek opposes biblical (‘young earth’) creation, he used a clip from our DVD Evolution’s Achilles’ Heels on the Darwinian basis for the Nazi Holocaust.7 And over a decade later, she is still going strong, working as CMI’s New Testament specialist.5 But many teens in her position are not so fortunate. As Once again, thank you for standing with us. Nancy Pearcey says, many church youth groups still ignore intellectual development: Lord, Lord, have we not done many wonderful works? Youth groups rarely encourage young people to grapple By Pastor Ron Boersma with tough questions. Instead the goal seems to be to This is important for everyone to read! engineer events that ratchet up emotional commitment. But emotional intensity is not enough to block out Jeremiah 6:16 questions. If anything, it leads teens to redefine Christianity in purely emotional terms—which leaves Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and them vulnerable when they finally do face their see, and ask for the old paths, where [is] the good questions.3 8|Page way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your knew each other because they said, “We believe souls. But they said, We will not walk [therein]. these things.” The following transcript from a message by Paris Reidbead (1919 – 1992). I believe this sheds a different light on salvation and on the following verses spoken by Christ; Matthew 7:20-24 They were men for the most parts, that had met God. But you see it wasn’t long until having said, “These are the things that establish us as fundamentalists,” the second generation said, “This is how we become a fundamentalist. Believe in the inspiration of the Bible. Believe in the deity of Christ. Believe in His death, burial, and resurrection, and thereby become a fundamentalist.” And so it wasn’t long until it got to our generation where the whole plan of salvation was to give intellectual assent to a few statements of doctrine. A person was considered a Christian because he could say, “uh huh” in four or five places that he was asked to. And if he knew where to say, “uh huh”, someone would pat him on the back, shake his hand, smile broadly and say, “Brother, you’re saved.” Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. 21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. 24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: So it had gotten down to the place where salvation was nothing more than an assent to a scheme or Would I be out of line and order if I were to talk to formula, at the end of this salvation was happiness you for a little while about Utilitarian religion and of man because humanism had penetrated. And so expedient Christianity? And the question that if you were to analyse the fundamentalism in you’re going to ask yourself is, “Is God and end or contrast to liberalism of a hundred years ago, as is He a means?” And you have to decide very early this developed, it would be like this: in your Christian life – whether you’re viewing God as an end or a means. The philosophy of the day The liberal says, “The end of religion is to make became humanism. And you can define humanism man happy while he’s alive.” And the fundamentalists says, “The end of religion is to this way – make man happy when he dies.” Humanism is a philosophical statement that declares, “The end of all being is the happiness of Until we find something like this: “Accept Jesus and man – the reason for existence is man’s you can go to Heaven, you don’t want to go to that ole, filthy, nasty, burning Hell when there’s a happiness.” beautiful Heaven up there; now come to Jesus so Now according to humanism, salvation is simply that you can go to Heaven. And the appeal could getting all the happiness you can out of life. The be as much to selfishness as a couple of men fundamentalists say, “We believe in the inspiration sitting in a coffee shop deciding they’re gonna to of the Bible. We believe in the deity of Jesus Christ. rob a bank to get something for nothing. It becomes We believe in Hell. We believe in Heaven. We so subtle it just goes everywhere. What is it? In believe in the death, burial, and resurrection of essence it’s this: That this philosophical postulous Christ. But remember that the atmosphere is at the end of all being is the happiness of man, has humanism. And humanism says, “The chief end of been sort of covered over with evangelical terms being is the happiness of man.” And so it wasn’t and biblical doctrine …. Until, “God reigns in long until we had this, that the fundamentalists Heaven for the happiness of man. Jesus Christ was incarnate for the happiness of man. All the angels 9|Page exist in the Heavens for the happiness of man. Everything is for the happiness of man.” And I submit to you that this is unchristian. Christianity says, “The end of all being is the glory of God.” Humanism says, “The end of all being is the happiness of man.” This is the betrayal of the ages! And it’s the betrayal in which we live, and I don’t see how God can revive it until we come back to Christianity. Isn’t man happy? Didn’t God intend to make man happy? Yeah, as a by-product and not a prime product. seen pictures of native funerals, and I dint want my fellow human beings to suffer in Hell eternally after such a miserable existence on earth. But it was there in Africa that God began to tear through the overlay of this humanism. And it was that day in my bedroom with the door locked that I wrestled with God. For there I was coming to grips with the fact that the people that I thought were ignorant and wanted to know how to go to Heaven, and were saying, “Someone come and teach us” actually didn’t want to take time to talk with me or anybody else. They had no interest in the Bible, and no Now I ask you, “What is the philosophy of mission? interest in Christ, and they loved their sin and wanted to continue in it. And I was to the place at that time, where I felt the whole thing was a sham What is the philosophy of evangelism? and a mockery, and I’d been sold a bill of goods. And I wanted to come home. What is the philosophy of a Christian? If you’ll ask me why I went to Africa, I’ll tell you, “I went primarily to improve on the justice of God.” I didn’t think it was right for anybody to go to hell without a chance to be saved. And so I went to give poor sinners a chance to go to Heaven. Now I hadn’t put it in so many words, but if you’ll analyse what I’ve told you, do you know what it is? It’s humanism. That I was simply using the provisions of Jesus Christ as a means to improve upon human conditions of suffering and misery. And when I got to Africa, I discovered that they weren’t poor, ignorant, little heathen running around in the woods looking for someone to tell them how to go to Heaven. That they were monsters of iniquity. They were living in honour and total defiance of far more knowledge of God than I ever dreamed they had. They deserved Hell, because they utterly refused to walk in the light of their conscience, and the light of the law written upon their heart, and the testimony of nature and the truth they knew. And when I found that out, I assure you I was so angry with God that one occasion in prayer I told Him it was a mighty, little thing He’d done…sending me out there to reach these people that were waiting to be told how to go to heaven. When I got there I found out they knew about heaven and didn’t want to go there. And they loved their sin and wanted to stay in it. And there alone in my bedroom, as I faced God honestly with what my heart felt, it seemed to me I heard Him say, “Yes, will not the judge of all the earth do right?” “The heathen are lost, and they’re going to Hell, not because they haven't heard the gospel. They’re going to Hell because they are sinners who love their sin, and because they deserve Hell.” “But… I didn’t send you out there for them; I didn’t send you out there for their sakes.” And I heard as clearly as I’ve ever heard, though it wasn’t with physical voice, but it was the echo of truth of the ages finding its way into an open heart. I heard God say to my heart that day something like this, “I didn’t send you to Africa for the sake of the heathen. I sent you to Africa for My sake. They deserved Hell, but I love them. And I endured the agonies of Hell for them. I didn’t send you out there for them. I sent you out there for Me.” “Do I not deserve the reward of My suffering? Don’t I deserve those for whom I died?” And it’s reversed it all; it’s changed it all and righted it all. And I wasn’t any longer working for Micah and ten shekels and a shirt, but I was serving the living God!
