Today, I consider myself very fortunate to be President of one of the most well respected sport organizations in the country. Manitoba remains synonymous with leadership and integrity and we continue to play a huge role at the national and international level. I couldn’t be prouder of this organization, all of the volunteers and staff, the over 140 facilities, and the thousands of curlers and curling fans throughout this great province. It is an honor to be associated with you all. As a curler and volunteer the reward for me is the opportunity of Mitchell Tarapasky working with so many dedicated volunteers from around the province, with enough memories of the experience to last a lifetime. We are all very passionate about the sport whether it’s as an organizer, participant or spectator, and many of us have long term associations with our own curling club. And that as much as anything is very unique in sport. Today the MCA is 118+ years old and seven years into an amalgamated gender equal board, that draws it’s strength from its Board of Directors, and celebrates much of its success from many of the enthusiastic and supportive volunteers and sponsors. The MCA is committed to the promotion, organization and facilitation of the sport of curling in Manitoba at all levels of participation. That’s our mandate and that’s what the MCA Director in your region has as their objective. As a Past President and Life Member of the Victoria CC in Winnipeg, the past 16 years as Club Secretary, I know the challenges facing our aging facilities. If you’re a member of a curling club in this province should not be surprised that operating costs are spiraling out of control while revenues just aren’t what they used to be. I encourage you to educate yourself on what it costs to run these seasonal facilities, many of which are volunteer operated. And when the cost for you to curl increases, it’s for no other reason than to maintain the building adequately so that you can enjoy the sport we all love to play in these not for profit buildings. I organized the Winnipeg Curling Club’s for that purpose and I am very pleased they continue to cooperate and work together. The Victoria CC, formerly the CPR is in its 90th year of existence and continues to this day as a debt free, volunteer run, working facility that will be around for a long time to come. I owe a debt of gratitude to this club and its executive committee, as well members past and present for giving me the support and encouragement required to participate at the levels I have. As in any curling club these are all very special people. Many are friends, and many are directly responsible for me being involved in curling today. I very much look forward to working with our facilities and their members throughout the province this season, and remain committed to giving my best effort on behalf of the Manitoba Curling Association. If the MCA or I can be of any assistance to you as a curler or your club, please contact us. Best wishes to all for a fantastic and fun-filled season. I hope to meet and greet as many of you as I can throughout my tenure. Mitchell Tarapasky President 15 MCAYEARBOOK 2006 / 07 16 2006 /07 MCAYEARBOOK Message from the Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba A John Harvard, P.C., O.M. s the Queen’s representative in Manitoba, I am pleased to extend vice-regal greetings to Manitoba Curling Association members on the launch of a new competitive season. A treasured element of Canadian culture, curling is a unique sport that encourages people of all ages and skills to stay active in the winter months, enjoying the camaraderie that is such a major part of the game. Leagues and bonspiels continue to flourish, adding special warmth to the season and bringing Manitobans together in communities, large and small, all across our province. I am very pleased to serve as the Honourary Patron of the Manitoba Curling Association for the 2006/07 season. Our province has a proud and accomplished curling heritage, a great tradition that carries on with each new season. Congratulations on your contribution to that legacy. I wish you continued success. The Honourable John Harvard, P.C., O.M. Lieutenant Governor Manitoba 17 MCAYEARBOOK 2006 / 07 18 2006 /07 MCAYEARBOOK Message from the Premier of Manitoba I Gary Doer t is my sincere pleasure to extend greetings on behalf of the citizens and Government of Manitoba to all those participating in the 2006-2007 curling season. Manitoba prides itself on being the richest province in the country when it comes to our local curling talent. We have champions from every age group at all levels, and I am certain this year will be another great curling year for the province. The tradition of achievement lives on through dedicated competitors like yourselves, whose commitment to the sport makes it one of the most popular pastimes of this great province. One of the real attractions of this sport is that anyone can participate and that it is, in fact, a team game. Curling is the kind of sport that brings communities together as competitors or as fans. Aside from being dedicated competitors, the curling community has developed a reputation as a group of wonderful volunteers and welcoming hosts. In Manitoba, we have a sense of community spirit that is unparalleled. I want to thank the Manitoba Curling Association for all their hard work and extend best wishes to all rinks for another successful season. It is my hope that you will be able to look back on this curling season and remember it as one of great achievement, enjoyment and friendship. Best of luck to you! Gary Doer Premier 19 MCAYEARBOOK 2006 / 07 20 2006 /07 MCAYEARBOOK 21 MCAYEARBOOK 2006 / 07 22 2006 /07 MCAYEARBOOK Message from the President of Sport Manitoba O Jeff Hnatiuk n behalf of Sport Manitoba, it is my pleasure to convey greetings to curlers across the province. Sport Manitoba is proud to support your provincial association, programs and events that contribute to the ongoing development and growth of curling in Manitoba. Our achievements have been many and allows us the opportunity to build on our many successes. The strength of curling in Manitoba is reflected two fold - by the competitors on the ice and their success and in the many conscientious and experienced volunteers and staff of the Manitoba Curling Association. It is through their guidance and leadership that programs exist for curlers of all levels and abilities and that we are able to host first rate events from the provincial to world championship level. Curling clubs and their members are an important part of our sport community and Manitoba’s sport and social fabric. The tens of thousands of Manitobans who enjoy curling help to make your sport one of the largest participation sports in our province and an enjoyable activity for all who participate. To curlers everywhere and to member clubs across the province, I extend best wishes for another successful 20062007 season. Jeff Hnatiuk President & CEO Sport Manitoba 23 MCAYEARBOOK 2006 / 07 24 2006 /07 MCAYEARBOOK Message from the Victoria Curling Club T he membership and executive of the Victoria Curling Club would like to congratulate Mitchell Tarapasky, the 20062007 MCA President. Mitch has been at the “Vic” for over 28 years. He has spent many of those years volunteering his time to serve on the executive and was our President in 1990-1991. He has and continues to serve the curling club as our Secretary. I’m sure Mitch will do well in his position as the MCA’s President this season. The wealth of experience he brings from the club level, along with the experience he has gained in volunteering at the two World Curling Championships and the Canadian Men’s Championship will greatly benefit the MCA. Blair McLaren Mitch is the fourth member of the Victoria Curling Club to become President of the MCA.He follows Ab Brown in 1960/61, Barry Mulvenny 1984/85, and Ken Parfeniuk 1997/98. The Victoria Curling Club also has the prestigious honour of being the home club to the President of the Manitoba Curling Club’s Past Presidents Association, Ed Tarapasky. Ed was the President of the “Vic” in 1980/81, and held the position of Secretary at the club for many years. Good luck and best wishes to Mitch, Ed, and the Manitoba Curling Association. Blair McLaren President Victoria Curling Club 25 MCAYEARBOOK 2006 / 07 26 2006 /07 MCAYEARBOOK Message from the Canadian Curling Association I Georgina Anderson t is my pleasure to bring greetings on behalf of President Donna Duffett and the Board of Directors of the Canadian Curling Association to the Manitoba Curling Association. Manitoba is considered by many to be one of the leaders of our sport in Canada and indeed the world and this trend continues as witnessed by the strong showing by all Manitoba teams last year. But it isn’t just on the ice that Manitoba’s reputation for leadership and innovation show up, as evidenced by The Canadian Curling Association and their partners, led by The Manitoba Curling Association, working towards a stronger and more cohesive partnership. The next year will be very exciting and busy as we build towards the 2008 Tim Horton’s Brier which will be held in Winnipeg at the MTS Centre. Congratulations to the host committee and the MCA and we look forward to a great event in 2008. To President Mitch Tarapasky, my congratulations and best wishes and I look forward to working with you this year towards that brighter future. To all the curlers of Manitoba I wish you good curling and wish you well for the upcoming season. I urge you to make the effort, pay a visit and spend a few minutes immersed in the history of our great game. We are indebted to our founding members, to all volunteers, and our owners, the MCA for their support. Without it our hall-of-fame would not be a reality. Curlers from all parts of our province are invited to suggest persons who should be nominated, and to contribute any artifacts they may have. Plan to attend the 20th Annual Manitoba Curling Hall-ofFame Induction Dinner to be held at the Canad Inn Polo Park, Sunday, May 6, 2007. This is largely due to the number of and the success of the numerous junior curling programs being offered in Manitoba curling clubs, by the Manitoba Curling Association and by the Canadian Curling Association. With most individual curling clubs in the province offering junior rocks programs, young curlers are being introduced to the game at a much younger age than in the past. Most of these programs utilize rocks that are half the weight of a normal curling stone while using the full sheet of curling ice. The smaller stone allows for better control of weight and accuracy which in turn generates shot making skills. This creates success for many kids and is a real confidence booster for youngsters. Other programs that do not have the smaller stones at their club will put in a set of rings half way down the sheet and the curlers will use regular rocks. Once players have a good handle on the fundamental skills they move on to programs or junior leagues that employ regular curling equipment and rules. The Manitoba Curling Academy opened last season with three schools implementing the program. This program is an optional course for Senior 1 and Senior 2 students to play the game while gaining school credit at the same time. There is also a middle school component that can be incorporated into the phys-ed program. This season the MCA has 10 schools signed up to take part. Elementary schools can now get involved through a CCA program called Getting Started. The program materials can be purchased from the CCA through the MCA and the program itself is geared towards teachers and younger students. There are workbooks, videos and group activities that take students from the classroom to the gym and finally the curling rink. Students will learn the fundamentals of curling, build physical fitness and experience the enjoyment of being on a team. So, now that teachers, volunteers, parents and coaches have spent the winter months introducing children to the game and getting them hooked, we have to spend all summer waiting for the new season. Actually we don’t. The MCA offers two summer curling camp programs to give kids a fun overnight camp program with their friends while getting curling instruction. The first program is geared to curlers who are fairly new to the game and want to start to learn the finer points like delivery analysis and teamwork. The other program is geared to more seasoned young players, but still includes the same individual and team focus. Players can register for these programs as individuals or as a team. Feel free to contact your local curling club or the Manitoba Curling Association office at 925-5723 or 1-800-706-1486 or on our website at www.curlmanitoba.org for more information on any of the listed programs. 34 2006 /07 MCAYEARBOOK 35 MCAYEARBOOK 2006 / 07 2nd Annual Sandra Schmirler Manitoba Golf Classic a Success T he golf may not have been championship calibre but the field certainly was and curlers and curling fans toured Larters at St. Andrews in the second annual Sandra Schmirler Manitoba Golf Classic. Over 200 participants including over 20 curlers representing Manitoba championship teams across six decades, along with former U.S. Junior champion and Olympian Don Barcombe, took part in the event. Representatives of the event’s 22 sponsors were prominent in their support of the tournament as well. The tournament, in support of the Sandra Schmirler Foundation and the Children's Hospital Foundation NeoNatal Intensive Care Unit, contributed $5,000 to each of the two charities. The total contribution more than tripled the charitable donation of the first tournament and organizers are confident that the total will rise in the future as curlers and curling fans adopt the event as a part of their summer schedule. “We appreciate the support of all of our sponsors, players and volunteers who helped us make the second annual tournament a success in support of the Schmirler Foundation’s mission - Caring for Babies in Crisis,” said organizing committee chairman Zivan Saper. The committee has announced that the 2007 Sandra Schmirler Manitoba Golf Classic will again be at Larters at St. Andrews on Thursday, July 26, 2007. 36 Curling's Great FOUR Great Value! Over the last few years, the MCF and the MCA have worked together for the betterment of the sport throughout Manitoba, in particular, the support of junior curlers. The Junior Development Program is designed to assist Manitoba curling clubs and Manitoba schools in hosting curling clinics for juniors up to the age of 19. The Foundation assists in this regard by subsidizing a portion of the cost. The Foundation also awards up to four $1,000 post-secondary education scholarships to any junior curler actively involved in community/school involvement. The 2002-2003 season introduced the Manitoba Curling Foundation Sport Award to two junior curlers from each Provincial Sport Region, with an annual award of $250. In recent years, substantial funds have also been directed from the Foundation towards assisting the Manitoba Curling Association in the funding of competition, technical and administrative programs. The Foundation is eager to assist anyone in Manitoba, who has identified a suitable need. If you think that you have a project that will qualify for support, please contact us. Honourary Life memberships recognize service to the Association and the Bill Lumsden Memorial Award recognizes volunteer dedication to a particular member-curling club. Youth curlers are also recognized through the Susan Galbraith Sportsmanship Award at the Provincials, the Lorraine Toth Scholarships at Summer Camp and through the Edna Moffat Scholarship. The MCA is also proud to pay tribute to the contributions of Manitobans who have received the Canadian Curling Association’s volunteer award. CCA – Ray Kingsmith Award The CCA’s Kingsmith Award is awarded annually to recognize an individual for dedication to the sport of curling at the executive level. MANITOBA RECIPIENTS OF THE VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD: 2001 Stuart Parrott Beausejour CCA - Award of Achievement Established in 1991, the CCA’s Award of Achievement recognizes individuals who have contributed significantly to curling in one of four areas – builder, technical development (instructor, coach, official, ice technician), marketing and media. MANITOBA RECIPIENTS OF THE AWARD OF ACHIEVEMENT: 1991 1993 2003 Bob Picken Ralph Bagley Hans Wuthrich Valour Road Winnipeg Gimli 45 MCAYEARBOOK 2006 / 07 The W.E. (Bill) Lumsden Memorial Award W.E (Bill) Lumsden passed away in April of 1982. To members of the Elmwood Curling Club as well as friends wherever curling is played, Bill exemplified a spirit and devotion to the game that we as a Club feel should be remembered. Accordingly, this Award has been established. The idea of the Award, which we hope will be presented annually, is to recognize someone in Manitoba, male or female, to the game of curling. Too often, a person in a club or league contributes to the growth of his or her club and receives little or no recognition. Some are elected to the Provincial or National organizations and receive accolades from that source, while others, who give freely of their time and themselves, are never so honoured. Hopefully, this Award will in some way help correct that situation. SELECTION CRITERIA 1. The Award recognizes a person who gives freely of their time on a voluntary basis. 2. The Award recognizes a person whose efforts in their curling club also reflect a community involvement such as organizing a league for young curlers, disabled persons and senior citizens. 3. No Award will be presented posthumously. 4. Nominations are held over one year subject only to the permission of the nominators. 5. The Award recognizes in particular a person who has contributed in a general way to the growth of their Club but perhaps has not received recognition for their efforts. RECIPIENTS OF THE W.E.
