***President’s Message ***
Here we are, in what should be our most colourful
month of the year. In case the rain washes out all the
natural colour of our trees, we will be saved by our
October speaker, Sandra Wilson! Her topic is “Colours into
the 21st Century”, and is sure to inspire us for projects
everywhere in the home.
The week of October 19-24 Cotton-By-Post Quilt
Shoppe in Ailsa Craig presents “The Quilts of Ireland”.
Check for details at www.cotton-by-post.com. I hope some
of you can car-pool to attend this event. Last year’s show,
African Quilts, was excellent!
Closer to home, until November 8, Wellington County
Museum & Archives in Fergus, is presenting “Over Here:
Women, Work & WWII”. From Nov. 4- Feb. 21, “Winter in
Red & White” is the attraction. www.wcm.on.ca
Our own Dufferin County Museum & Archives is
hosting a quilt show, which we will see in November, when
our Guild meeting moves on site. So, between weather
events, get out and enjoy these labours of love.
I finished some new projects to show at the Fall Fair,
and have my placemats finished for Meals on Wheels. Now
I’m on to a new quilt, sparked by Jodi Barrows, and
Christmas gifts for friends and family. I know I’ll get sidetracked, and still be rushing to finish on Christmas Eve,
but my intentions are noble!
See you at the Guild meeting!

Looking Back Over 15 Years
by Leah Mitchell ~ Guild Historian
Guild workshops, Guild displays at Community events and Quilt Shows help to enhance the
knowledge of quilting to our members and to the public and fulfills the Guild first goal.
The Guild offers two or more workshops a year which means that over the past fifteen years the members have had the opportunity to attend at least thirty workshops as well as the demonstrations offered at some of the
regular Guild meetings. Some of the workshops and demo's that have been offered are;; quick piecing, photo transfer,
machine quilting, fabric dying and painting, curved two patch, appliqué techniques, trapunto, binding techniques, using templates and hand quilting. Some of these have been offered more than once but the one asked for most often is "Colour
Theory" which the guild presented for the first time in May 1995 with Judy Island. The Guild offers two or more workshops a year which means that over the past fifteen years the members have had the opportunity to attend at least

two patch, appliqué techniques, trapunto, binding techniques, using templates and hand quilting. Some of these have been
offered more than once but the one asked for most often is "Colour Theory" which the guild presented for the first time
in May 1995 with Judy Island.
Over the years the Guild has been invited to set up displays at community events. The Orangeville Fall Fair,
Dufferin County Museum & Archives, Christian Women Group and Doors Open in Shelburne, Orangeville Craft & Art
Show, Lord Dufferin Senior Arts, the Grand Valley Public Library Spring Program and the Caledon Strawberry Festival
have all featured the activities of the Guild and demonstrated the preservation of quilting.
Our first public quilt display hung at the Dufferin Museum and Archives in the Silo from April to June 1996. In
1997 a Canadian quilter, Camille Remme, was invited to do a public trunk show and lecture on her Celtic piecing technique.
In 1998 (again in 2006) John Willard delighted the audience with his colourful and dramatic quilts and amusing life
stories. These three successful public events gave the Executive the courage to appoint a Steering Committee to
organise the first Quilt Show - The Magic of Cloth in 2001. About 200 quilted items were hung and over 800 visitors
came to see the show. It was successful beyond our wildest dreams and was declared to be a "first class act". Since then
two more shows have been held with the fourth show planned for October 2010. (photo) Our President, Pat Kalapaca, won
the CQA/ACC Ribbon Viewer's Choice award at the 2007 show for her Oriental Fans quilt. If you are a member of the
Dufferin Piecemakers Quilting Guild you may hang up to ten quilted items in the 2010 show.

Do you have a quilting story to
tell?
Donna M. Marrin is collecting
quilting stories from Ontario
Quilting Guilds which she plans
to publish in a book.
Your stories may be short or long, happy or
sad. They may be about a quilt you made
for yourself, a family member or a friend,
your stash, your quilt guild or an event
that you attended - just as long as the
theme remains centred on quilting. Send
your story to Donna M. Marrin at 8 Fry
Court Markham, On. L3P 4G9 or to her
email at [email protected]
You can find her on the web at
www.markhamvillagewriters.com
Meanwhile here is a touching story from
our very own Guild. Many of you
will have made friends with our new
member Candice Kitchen over the last
few months. At the September meeting we
introduced our newest member Jody
Borruat. Imagine Candice's surprise to see
her Aunt for the first time in seven years.
They had lost touch with each other after the
death of Jody's sister seven years earlier.
How special that they both have the same
interest, now live close to each other and
that our Guild was the vehicle for their
reunion :-) .
Community Outreach - Christmas Placemats
Once again we will be collecting placemats for Dufferin Meals on Wheels to distribute at Christmas time. Mats will
be accepted at the November meeting. (If you miss this meeting we can take a limited number in December.) If
possible use a non-Christmas backing for year round use.
Thanks to Mary-Lou Crosland for coordinating this effort.

Community Projects Block
The fall season is in full swing and we are anxious to get working on our community projects.
There are at least 28 finished tops to be quilted and we hope to make a good dent in that stash as we
learn to use the mid-arm machine at Cobwebs & Caviar. Thank you to A J and Jackie for their generous support of Community quilts.
If you are trained on the mid-arm we would welcome your time and talent to quilt one of our tops. Training
sessions are scheduled on a regular basis so check with C & C for the next time a class is being held.
Our next work session will be on the 4th Tues of Oct (27th) from 1:30 to 4:00 at Cobwebs. If you can join us
for some stitching time, please bring your machine and basic sewing supplies. We will have the other materials
available. If you like to work on small projects, cuddle quilts (approx 36”x40”) or incubator quilts (approx 28”x30”)
are appreciated. Cotton fabric and/or flannelette are preferred materials for these projects.
At our first meeting on Sept 21st, Community projects received donations of 3 cuddle quilts and one full size
quilt top. Thank you to those donors. If you have cotton fabric or flannelette that you no longer need we can always
put it to use. Also larger fabric lengths for backings are appreciated. More batting has been ordered so that we can
work on our finished tops.
Hope to see some of you on the Oct 27th for our work session.
Your Community Projects Committee Fern, Mary Lynne, Penny, Norah, Karen and Marie.

Our commitment to FTP is 200 journals for the year. Please help by
donating one or two at any time of the year.
The journals need to be about 6”x8”, lined pages, bound by either
coil or glue. Consider making a fabric cover.
Please leave them in the basket provided at any meeting.
