2015 - Chicago Training Center
Bow Ties & Boathouses
a Chicago Training Center Benefit
Welcome everyone to the 9th annual Gala!
It is amazing how we have grown through the years! Back in 2006 we had
no road map, money, or kids – just an idea and determination to make
this sport available to communities that have never had the benefit of the
choice to participate.
Years have come and gone and we can now boast that we have had
over 250 alumni that have participated in competitive events through
our programming and a further group over 40 taking part in CTC as we
speak. Our goal was to create a program where every participant has the
opportunity to practice the sport in a competitive environment. Through
our commitment to that goal we have been able to deliver this program to
countless youths – many of whom continued their relationship with rowing
post high school and into college.
CTC has also created events for the rowing community that have
never existed before – a South Branch Regatta, The Tough Cup now in its
4th year, and the Tiro Cup, a novice only indoor erg championship – and
have had more spilled media ink than many Nationally recognized youth
championship squads! All of this is to say is that CTC is different and
people are starting to take notice. This couldn’t be more obvious than the
Mayor’s commitment to build the south side boathouse at Eleanor St – a
structure that will allow us to expand our offerings and provide a guiding
light for many more kids and families to find our program.
Tonight is a celebration of the kids – past and present – that have taken
the chance to play their role in this story. This is also a celebration of your
help through financial support in allowing us to be able to do this work.
We choose not to charge for the simple fact that we want no barrier of
entry for the communities we look to serve. We have a lot of more work
to do but tonight’s focus is celebration. Please enjoy the evening and raise
your glass to the organization and the kids – they are all worth it!

I
was introduced to the Chicago Training Center seven
years ago through a friend, who thought it might make a great
story for wttw’s Chicago Tonight. When I met CTC’s founder,
Montana Butsch, I quickly discovered that this program deserved
to have its story told. Chicago Tonights’ format allowed me to truly
delve into the importance of a program that introduces inner
city youth to a sport they would not normally have the chance to
participate in.
When filming began, I had the opportunity to meet these well
rounded young men and women who felt privileged to be part of
a program that would open up doors for them. The initial story led
to a follow up story in which we followed two students to London,
England for the annual boat race. I felt that journey opened up their
eyes to yet another world that would have been foreign to them.
Several years ago, I left wttw and joined wmaq where I once
again profiled the great work of CTC. It gave me yet another chance
to introduce this wonderful program to another audience.
CTC is a program that will always touch my heart. It provides a
gateway for inner city youth to achieve at any level. It expand their
horizons, and offers them something exciting to experience. In the
coming years, I hope to once again profile CTC as it excels even
more.
