Benjamin Franklin wisely remarked that “an investment in knowledge pays the
best interest.” Education is a critical investment for our children’s future, our local
community’s future, and our nation’s future. Selecting the best learning environment
is one of the most important decisions parents can make. The purpose of this
publication is to provide you with information about the outstanding educational
opportunities that exist at the 34 independent schools in our community, all
members of the Memphis Association of Independent Schools (MAIS). Perhaps one
or more of these learning environments will resonate with the aspirations that you
have for your child’s future.
Independent schools are distinctive by design. Each of the schools represented in
MAIS is guided by its own mission and educational environment. Some are oriented
toward teaching younger students; some are designed to educate middle and upperschool students; and, some are designed to educate children from pre-kindergarten
through the twelfth grade. Some are designed to teach a single gender, while
others are co-educational. Some are religiously oriented and others are secular in
their approach to education. Some are designed to address special-needs children;
some have a traditional teaching and learning environment, while others are more
progressive. All of the independent schools, however, are distinguished by their
commitment to educational excellence.
Independent schools focus on their independence.
To be accredited, independent schools are
accountable to a broad range of standards and must
demonstrate continual growth based on their own set
of strategic initiatives. All of the schools represented
in MAIS are accredited by the Southern Association of
Independent Schools and the Southern Associationt
of Colleges and Schools, which maintain rigorous
standards while still allowing each school to maintain
their own distinctive independence. A distinguishing
characteristic of independent schools is that they are
not bound by state curricular standards and are able
to create their own distinctive curricula. The greatest
means of accountability for independent schools,
however, comes from the fact that they are funded
largely through tuition dollars and these investment
decisions are made annually by parents.
While independent schools are privately funded,
they are publicly engaged. Students and teachers of independent schools are
committed volunteers and engaged citizens in our Mid-South community. MAIS
schools provide a variety of programs that enrich the lives in our community.
Independent schools are further distinguished by the depth of relationships
that exist between students and teachers, and between the school and the home.
Because the classes tend to be small, teachers at independent schools have the
ability to forge meaningful relationships with their students and have a keen insight
into their students’ learning and potential, inside and outside the classroom. These
relationships, moreover, transcend the school day as teachers often become life
mentors for students in independent schools. This commitment to life-long learning
is just one reason why some families choose to invest in independent-school
education for their child.
All of our schools prepare students for the challenges they will face in life.
Accordingly, the learning environments at independent schools are forward-thinking
and holistic, preparing students for the challenges they will face in the twenty-first
century. Importantly, teachers in independent schools are united by the reality that
they find meaning and purpose in their school’s philosophy and mission, particularly
the emphasis placed on excellence.
It is a privilege to partner with Memphis magazine in presenting this information.
MAIS is grateful to the thousands of area families who are already investing in an
independent school education for their children. For those who would like to learn
more about our schools, I invite you to visit our website, www.maisschools.com.

Rooted in Faith, Focused on the Future
The rules of grammar and the theorems of geometry are not likely
to change anytime soon. Life would be easy if the nation’s secondary schools simply had to focus on these certainties, but high
school encompasses key developmental stages. At St. Benedict
at Auburndale High School (SBA), academics are part of a larger
mix of the focus designed to prepare students for adulthood by
embracing their faith and leading
full, successful lives.
Saint Benedict at Auburndale
High School is a co-educational,
college preparatory school of
the Catholic Diocese of Memphis
committed to academic excellence through a comprehensive
and challenging multilevel curriculum presented in an atmosphere
permeated with the aims, values and teachings of the Roman
Catholic faith. SBA is accredited by the Southern Association of
Colleges and Schools, a charter member of the National Catholic
Education Association, an Associate Member of the Memphis Association of Independent Schools, and a member of the National
and Southern Associations of College Admission Counseling.
At SBA, we promote personal excellence by maximizing the
spiritual, physical, emotional, social and academic growth of the
student. Students come to us prepared to learn, and because of
their experiences at SBA, they all go on to some type of postsecondary education.
Tools of the Trade
St. Benedict at Auburndale High School serves just over 1,000
students in grades 9-12. The graduates of St. Benedict average
$12 million in merit-based college scholarships. Our remarkable
campus and state-of-the-art facilities enable students to stay
ahead of the technology curve. A wireless campus environment is
designed with the future in mind. Laptops, Tablet PCs, and iPads
enhance learning in the classroom and complement the school’s
Distance Learning Center, computer labs and SMART Board™
Rooms. SBA strives to provide an atmosphere that capitalizes
on strengths. Cutting-edge technology allows us to better serve
all our students — Advanced Placement, Honors, Traditional, and
those enrolled in the PLUS Program (Positive Learning Utilizing
Strategies) for students with learning differences.
Responding to Students’ Interests
Knowing that the classroom is not
the only arena where learning takes
place, SBA provides a wide variety
of co-curricular and extra-curricular
activities. In addition to academics
and leadership pursuits, over half the
students are members of SBA’s 23
sports teams, of which several have
won region and state championships.
The Eagles are recognized as Best of
Preps champions.
SBA keeps an open mind to the
voice of a diverse student body, resulting in an ever-expanding roster
of clubs. The school’s responsiveness

productions, musical concerts and the Crossroads Concert Series to bring instrumental and vocal arts to the general public
as well as our school community. Our performing arts theatre
allows us to be of service to others in the community for hosting
their events, as does our 1,400-seat gymnasium.
Alumni and Parents Know What We Are About
Alumni are active in the Alumni Council, Alumni weekends and
events, and our parents receive weekly and monthly electronic
newsletters along with web-based grade reporting and emergency notification when needed. All our constituencies receive
the“On Eagles’ Wings” Magazine throughout the year. In addition, alumni, parents, students, and friends can receive up-tothe-minute notice of school events and accomplishments on
Twitter and FaceBook.
Education with a Catholic Heart
Faith in God is SBA’s cornerstone. Daily theology classes, prayer
services, First Friday Adoration, Eucharistic celebrations and
outreach to the community in need help students express their
faith. Students at SBA have participated in the National March for Life
for over 25 years and, every year,
SBA has been the leader in community service, such as Food Bank
collections, Lifeblood donations,
Ronald McDonald House, St. Jude
events, the Wings Foundation,
Make-A-Wish efforts, and many
more. The focal point of the school
is the 250-seat chapel, located in
the main foyer, which symbolizes
SBA’s distinct blend of delivering
a superior preparatory education
with a Catholic heart.

Engaging Hearts and Minds —
Purposeful, Powerful, Proven
Westminster Academy is Memphis’ only classical Christian school
and offers a distinctly classical, distinctly Christian education to
K–12 students.
Through a purposeful, powerful, and proven approach to
education, Westminster Academy takes two fundamental
characteristics of all children — their love for learning and their
innate reasoning ability — and intentionally engages these to inspire
children to become thoughtful, disciplined, engaged learners.
Westminster Academy’s rigorous program and classical methodology
emphasizes Socratic teaching. This
method requires that students
move toward understanding by
having to think for themselves
applying their own reasoning
skills rather than being given
answers to memorize and
repeat. Latin instruction begins
in the second grade and
fortifies thinking skills, attention
to detail, grammar, and the
foundation of English and many
modern languages.
In addition, students are taught
how to reason effectively
and how to communicate
persuasively, both orally
and in writing through
formal logic and rhetoric
training.
These
skills
are
applied to all subjects
in all grades, and the
results are impressive.
Our
students
read
original works by the
greatest thinkers in
Western culture who grappled with questions of what is true, good,
virtuous, and beautiful. Using these works, our teachers engage the
hearts and minds of our students in powerful ways, equipping them
to defend what is worth defending. They teach students to meet the
challenges of rigorous college work and the challenges they are sure
to face in life.

Education with a Higher Purpose
First Assembly Christian School partners with parents to prepare students to
strive for excellence and live for the glory of Jesus Christ. A co-educational,
multidenominational school serving about 800 students in grades JrK-12,
FACS has been continuously accredited by SACS since 1979. FACS provides
college-preparatory education along with honors and advanced placement
courses for students who excel and appropriate academic services for
students having trouble acquiring specific skills. All students are encouraged
to participate in a wide variety of Christian service, fine arts, and athletic
opportunities. Enrollment at FACS has doubled in the last decade. The
family atmosphere and low faculty/
student ratio are repeatedly cited
as top reasons for attendance.
Fayette Academy was established in 1965 by a group of parents who
were seeking a community-based independent Christian school
education for their children. FA brought back the neighborhood
school concept with small classes and a warm, loving, Christian
environment for students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through
Twelve. FA is a non-denominational, college-preparatory, coeducational school.

Exploring the benefits of an
independent education
P
Parents want their children to receive the
best education possible, to be mentally and
creatively stimulated, and to be fully prepared
for college, their future workplace, and life
as an adult. While there are a number of
educational options, many parents choose to
send their children to an independent school,
so they can be more involved and have more
direction over their child’s learning process
and developmental growth.
Independent schools offer parents choices
for an education tailored to their academic
by Shara Clark
goals for their children. Ellis Haguewood,
interim president of the Memphis Association
of Independent Schools (MAIS) says, “Each
independent school has its own mission
and philosophy and its own track record of
performance, and parents can look at all of
those different schools and decide which one
fits the needs and the interests of their child,
as well as their own parental interests and
aspirations.”
Of the 34 MAIS member institutions, some
have religious affiliations, some offer curricula
focused on special needs of children, and
many offer rigorous college preparatory
courses. Independent schools are distinctive
by design because they are not held to
mandated assessments or curricula as in
the case of public schools. While they are
not held to those standards, they are all
held accountable to their own accreditation
standards. Each school has its own curriculum
that will reflect its own educational mission
and philosophy.

curriculum and teaching methods in a
traditional school system, there are also
geographic limitations as to which institution
parents can send their children. Independent
schools offer choices — choices for parents
to be as selective as they please in choosing
the educational path that is right for their
child and choices for independent schools
to determine how they deliver that
education. “Each school is able to
decide for itself what the criteria
ought to be for the people who
teach there and for the students
who attend, and there is a greater
decentralization of power within
each of those schools,” Haguewood
says.
Independent schools offer small
classes with low student-faculty
ratios. Some classes may have as
many as 25 students, while some
may have fewer than five. The
smaller of those, for example, would
be AP or highly specialized classes
or those that serve students with
special needs. This means students receive
a very focused education in an intimate
learning environment and develop strong
student/teacher relationships.
Within the independent school
community, the requirements for teachers vary.
Some schools require a certification by the
state, and others do not. Though independent
school teachers are not necessarily required
to have teaching certificates or education
degrees, many will have them, especially
in elementary grades. But an independent
school is free to hire teachers who have a
particular passion for a subject. For example,
in many independent schools, particularly at
the secondary level, English teachers will have
degrees in English. Science teachers will have
degrees in chemistry or biology, and so on. In
many cases, they will have advanced degrees
in those disciplines. In general, independent
schools seek to find teachers who have a
depth of knowledge in their subject and a
deep appreciation for each student in the
class as a distinctive learner.
“But it’s the interaction between the
student and the faculty member who is
enthusiastic about a particular subject — and
not just the subject, but the idea of teaching
it — that is transformational in the lives of
students,” Haguewood says. “Along with that
passion comes great diversity. Independent
school faculties bring varied expertise and
experience to the table, which inform their
curriculum choices and teaching methods.
They’re not constrained by a curriculum that
someone in an office somewhere else wrote.”
The independent high schools are required
to offer the courses necessary to get into the
state flagship university, which in this case
is the University of Tennessee. Otherwise,
each school is free to have its faculty or an
academic committee decide what courses
students should be exposed to before they
graduate from that school, and they pride
themselves on cutting-edge delivery of that
curriculum.
Haguewood says there’s a strong emphasis
on individual responsibility in an independent
“It’s the interaction
between the student
and the faculty
member ... that is
the beauty of independent schools,” says
Haguewood. “Some require students to do
a certain number of hours of community
service every year. Other schools do it simply
on a volunteer basis. But they allow the
students opportunities to develop and lead
projects on their own. The students are
able to learn a lot about managing people,
about maintaining connections with
service organizations, and about the
philosophies of those organizations.”
Haguewood
says
student
leadership opportunities, along
with smaller class sizes and school
enrollment than in public schools,
foster increased student involvement
in the school community. “With
fewer numbers, students are more
inclined to participate in a wide
range of activities — they play on
multiple athletic teams, perform in
arts programs, serve on an honor
council or in student government.
This diverse experience makes
students well rounded. They learn
a sense of responsibility, and they are more
inclined to give back to the community after
they graduate.”
All MAIS institutions offer some kind of
financial aid, and in most cases, aid is given
on a need-based priority system, but some
schools offer merit-based scholarships. The
funding for financial aid usually comes from
fundraising efforts or endowments. Some
schools cap the percentage of financial aid
that they offer. In many cases, the amount of
aid given is determined by an outside agency.
The family sends its financial information to
the agency, and the agency concludes what
the parents are able to pay. “If the school has
financial aid available to fill in the difference
between the actual cost and what the parents
can pay, then they do that,” Haguewood says.
“We want to make independent education
available to all students regardless of
socioeconomic status.”
Sending a child to an independent school
is a worthy investment in his or her future,
Haguewood says. “Parents realize this. They
know that a strong education is an absolute
necessity in this day and age. In independent
schools, parents know what’s going on — they
know the teachers and students, and they
are connected with other school families.
They choose MAIS schools for this and many
other reasons — for the small class size,
the strong teacher/student relationships,
and because the institutions are free to
exercise their missions and philosophies
without government interference.” Though
the missions of each school differ, there’s a
strong emphasis on college preparation and
the student’s personal, social, and academic
growth, so that independent school students
are well prepared for their future endeavors.

school — the responsibility of each student to
do his own work to the best of his ability. Most
independent schools have rigorous academic
standards, with focus placed on personal
growth for each student. Independent schools
also strive to achieve the development of
a strong moral character in each of their
students, and sometimes in ways that public
schools are not allowed. For example, in some
cases it’s a religious emphasis on character.
There is also priority placed on citizenship
and personal responsibility. Leadership and
service are encouraged at independent
schools, with an emphasis on honor and
integrity lining up with the schools’ missions
and philosophies. Community service is an
important part of every independent school’s
mission. “Every school is different, and that’s
