Sir Thomas Picton Rock
the Torch Theatre
On a rainy day in November, the cast of Macbeth made their way to
the Torch Theatre to perform an edited version of Shakespeare’s
Macbeth, for the Shakespeare Schools festival. Dressed in black
and lead by a host of talented pupils of all ages, they took to the
stage and took it by storm.
What they did not know until that very evening, was that the creator
of Shakespeare Schools Festival would be sitting in judgement of
their performance. The performance was a resounding success
and the staff of Sir Thomas Picton could not be more proud of the
depth of the performances that were displayed.
“Sir Thomas Picton’s
Macbeth has set the
bar by which I will
judge all other performances this year.

A bit more enthusing
Macbeth is the story of a good man, turned to evil by supernatural forces and his own willingness to give in to greed. He is given glad tidings of a new title, bestowed upon him for
his services to the crown; yet the Witches twist their knowledge of this fact, to prompt him
into murdering the King of Scotland and taking the crown by force.
Throughout the play, Macbeth transforms from a loyal subject to a man so desperate, he
would kill his best friend and a whole castle; men women and children.
So how do a band of teenagers, ranging from 14 to 18, accomplish such a feet? How do
they press themselves to understand the greed, the fear, the loss and the madness that
must be portrayed in this, The Scottish Play? They push themselves. Their imaginations.
Their voices. They train to fight and die. And they do all this, while attending their lessons
and keeping up with their homework: Awesome. I am in awe of these young men and
women and what they have achieved.

The players upon the stage
Lady’s maid: Meg Ryan
Jordan Dickin’s Macbeth was entrancing. From loyal to bitter, greedy to resigned, he
played the would-be-king with confidence and absolute control in every performance.
Servant: Eleri Edwards
Lady Macbeth, played by Meg Richards, was an enigmatic enchantress, manipulating her
husband and falling to the depths of insanity, played with a control and talent that many
adults would be envious of.
To list all the brilliant performances and heartfelt dedication shown, would be impossible,
so I will summarise; our murderers were gruesome and blood thirsty, Fleance was loyal
and steadfast, Duncan and his princes were the epitome of royal and those serving them
showed a stiff upper lip to be envied by many an English butler.
Furthermore, many of the cast, including Aaron, Gareth, Naomi , Eleri and Lucy took on
new, and for some, additional roles.
Finally, our Witches were unanimously praised as absolutely magical and our backstage
staff were as perfect as Poppins herself.
Messenger: Alice Challoner
Murderer 1: Harry Voombe
Murderer 2: Max Harrison
Murderer 3: Will Lewis
