The Anacortes Brewery presents a Farm to Table Brewer’s Dinner at H20
Anacortes 6PM Thursday, October 20th. The event will feature 6 courses
prepared by Rockfish Grill and H20 Chef David Tisinger using fresh local
ingredients from Skagit Valley farmers and purveyors. Each course will
be paired with a beer from a local brewery. Confirmed participants are
Anacortes, Chuckanut, Farmstrong, Flyers and Northsound Breweries
along with High Rock Fisheries, Skagit Valley Malting and Smith and
Morrison Farms with more being added. Guests will have an opportunity
to visit with farmers and brewers during each course. The cost for the
dinner is $45 in advance and $50 day of the event plus tax and gratuity.

Welcome to the Greek Islands
The Anacortes Arts Festival, Anacortes Arts Commission
and the City of Anacortes plans to enhance the south end of
Commercial Ave. with visual artwork. The South Commercial
Art Project will include 2 components. Six Splash Murals
will digitally transfer existing 20 artistic images onto murals,
either free standing or wall mounted. Artists can submit up to
3 images including painting, photography or digitally created
work. There will be 6 Whale Tail Sculptures using prefabricated
fiberglass forms, painted and enhanced by selected artists.
The Festival is looking for art that is bright, graphic and easily
visible to moving traffic. The work will be placed at locations
between the Hwy 20 roundabout and 12th St. Open to artists
from Anacortes, Guemes and Skagit County. For more info

Join us for an evening of fun, the 5th annual Anacortes Robotics Pasta
Dinner, Thursday Nov. 3rd. Doors open at 5:30 pm, dinner at 6 pm. At
the event we have team displays, a basket raffle and some fun table activities to entertain. This year’s dinner is being held at the Port of Anacortes
Transit Shed, 100 Commercial Ave. Music will be provided by local jazz
band, Newton’s Law. Anacortes Robotics is part of the national FIRST
Robotics organization. Our after school program takes the challenge of
competition and couples it with team cooperation in a educational setting,
to excite and engage students in learning. We are non-profit, parent and
mentor volunteer organization responsible for supporting and funding the
Anacortes teams. Each year we hold this fund raising event in order to help
build team community and help fund the teams. We currently have five
teams in operation, from elementary through high school levels. Tickets
are $15 for adults and $10 for youth under 12. Tickets are available by

Anacortes Arts Festival is currently accepting grant applications for 2017.
The Festival is looking to fund a well-balanced group of grant requests
and projects that involve a diverse group of people and art activities.
Each year, the Festival provides grants to a wide range of arts education
and enrichment programs. Nearly $52,000 in funding was committed in

Meeting Rm. Assorted fun projects, including arts and crafts programs,
preparation for various library programs, and other cool activities. LEGOS
IN THE LIBRARY! Most Sunday afternoons 1-3pm. Children ages 5-12
meet in the Children’s Library to create masterpieces from Legos. We
provide everything you need, do not bring Legos from home. TALES
FOR TAILS: Made possible by Dogs on Call and is held from 1-2pm on
the 2nd Saturday of the month in the Children’s Library. Children read to
a dog in the comfort of the Children’s Library. Dates are November 12,
and December 10. FAMILY READING EVENT: Great stories and a free
book for each child in attendance: Wednesday, October 26 at 6-7pm. Join
us for Harvest Fun! Our guest reader will delight families with seasonal
stories. Families are encouraged to attend this program in their Halloween

Costumes For Kids will be held on October 15th from 1-4pm in the Island
View Elementary School Theater. Costumes For Kids is a community
event to provide Halloween costumes to children in need in the Anacortes

Soroptimist International of Fidalgo Island is proud to present our 12th
Hallowine Auction and Wine Tasting - October 15th at the Swinomish
Casino and Lodge. Doors open at 5:30 for an ongoing silent auction, hors

live auction hosted by the delightful Mr. Patrick Grant! This is our one
and only fundraiser and all proceeds fund scholarships and community

Designated beneficiary of the Anacortes Rotary “Viva la Fiesta, Viva
Rotary” fall fundraiser is the Island Hospital Mental Health Intervention
Program for Anacortes schools. Date for the event is Friday, October 14.

October 14. Along with food and beverages, the event will feature a live
auction of appealing experiences and items. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

The Friends of the Forest Annual Benefit will take place from 5-11pm on
Saturday, November 5 at the Port of Anacortes Transit Shed Event Center.

table of eight /$600 table of ten. Tickets available at Watermark Book

Island Hospital is holding a cholesterol and glucose screening Tuesday,
October 18 from 8 to 11 a.m. in the Island Health Resource Center, 1211
24th Street. The screening includes a full profile of blood fats and blood
sugar levels, requires a 12-hour fast except for water and medications.
Cost is $10 and is provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Please do
not arrive before 7:30 a.m. If you have insurance and are not on Medicare
or Medicaid, we are now billing your insurance directly for this screening.
Your patient responsibility will be $10 or less depending on your coverage.

The Realities of Advanced Medical Interventions - This presentation on
Wednesday, October 26, at 1 p.m. explains advanced medical interventions such
as CPR, mechanical ventilation and dialysis. Presenters Cathy, BSN RN, and
Maureen, RN, work in an Intensive Care Unit where patients typically require full
or partial life sustaining measures. They will present in layperson’s terms the
realities of what these often heroic advanced medical interventions mean to the
average person and their families.
Reiki Therapy - Experience an individual 15-minute Reiki session scheduled
between 1 and 2:30 p.m. every Wednesday in October. Reiki is a non-invasive
method of sharing healing energy which may relieve stress, anxiety, and physical
discomfort. Sign up at the Reception Desk. Donations of $5 are suggested.
The Kitchen Needs Volunteers - There is a need for a regular helper in the
kitchen to work every Wednesday. If you are interested in helping out, contact Eric
Ashcroft at the Center at 293-7473. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Dental Hygiene Care - The next dental hygiene clinic will be held on Tuesday,
October 18. Please ask for an application packet at the Reception Desk. You will
be called to set up an appointment. You do not have to be “low-income” to use
this service. This program targets seniors who do not have dental insurance,
but all seniors are welcome. If you have insurance you will need to process
your own claim.

Dear Claudia,
For the past 15 years I have been using my
brother-in-law’s power tools. He has all the best
tools and he never uses them – table saw, radial
arm saw, chop saw, router, – all the good stuff and
he never has built a thing. So I use them all. I have
built quite a few things over the years and I have
really enjoyed myself with all the little projects and
having such good tools to work with.
My brother-in-law has never said a thing about
me using his tools... until now.
Last summer I entered a contest with one of my
woodworking projects. As luck would have it, I won
2nd place with the piece. I got a 2nd place ribbon
and a cash award of $25 dollars. When I told my
brother-in-law of my 2nd place win and the ribbon,
he acted very strange about the whole thing.
Now my brother-in-law does not want to loan
me any of his tools. He says I could hurt myself. I
don’t know, I’ve been using the tools for the past
15 years and nothing has ever happened.
I think that he is just jealous of my 2nd place
win.

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1 cup sugar
3 large eggs
1 Tbsp. canola oil
2 tsp. vanilla extract
1 1/2 tsp. almond extract
2/3 cup dried tart cherries chopped
1/2 cup sliced almonds
1/2 cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips
PREHEAT oven to 350°F
COMBINE flours and salt in a bowl.
BEAT sugar and eggs with a mixer at high speed until
thick and pale (about 4 minutes). Add oil and extracts,
beating until well blended. Add flour mixture, beating
at low speed just until blended.
STIR in cherries. almond slices and chocolate chips.
DIVIDE dough in half, turn out onto a baking sheet
coated with cooking spray.
SHAPE each portion into a 10-inch-long roll, and
flatten to 1-inch thickness.
BAKE for 25 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove
rolls from the baking sheet, cool 10 minutes on a wire
rack. Reduce oven temperature to 325°F.
CUT each roll diagonally into 20 (1/2-inch) slices.
Place slices. cut side down, on baking sheet. Bake for
10 minutes.Turn biscotti over, and bake an additional
10 minutes (biscotti will be slightly soft in center but
will harden as they cool).
REMOVE from baking sheet, cool completely on
wire rack.
