Full steam ahead to the summit!
The SchafbergBahn is the steepest cog railway in Austria. Since
1893 mighty steam locomotives have powered their way from
the lake-side base station at St. Wolfgang to the 1783 m high
summit of the Schafberg. The SchafbergBahn allows every
visitor to conquer the mountain in comfort and style, making
the entire journey an unforgettable experience! Trains are in
service from the end of April through to October.
Once at the top, magnificent Alpine views and warm Austrian
hospitality beckon. Visit the Hotel Schafbergspitze, Austria‘s
oldest mountain inn, originally dating from 1862! From the top
you may see numerous Alpine lakes and the Dachstein glacier.
The journey to the summit of the Schafberg starts at the lakeside base station St. Wolfgang. After a view minutes, the track
crosses the provincial border between Salzburg and Upper
Austria and then continues its steep ascent through lush fields
and green forests. At the Dorneralm (1015 m) the first crossing point is reached. This is were the historic steam locomotives pause to take water. The next stop is the quaint station
of Schafbergalpe at 1363 m. From there it takes another 10
minutes for the train to reach the summit terminus.

Steam trains operate daily and all season long, given their
technical availability. Diesel trains can be put in service in case
a steam loco breaks down or in order to boost operational
capacity at peak times. Trains may be cancelled in the event of
particularly inclement weather (storms or strong snowfall) or
due to a lack of passengers.

DID YOU KNOW?
Our 122-year old rack tanks are amongst the oldest steampowered cog locomotives in the world. Thanks to the knowhow of our staff, most of the overhaul work can be performed
on site at the shed in St. Wolfgang. Raising steam requires 4
hours, while 500 kg of coal and 3000 l of water are consumed
during a run up and down the mountain.

In 1873 the striking paddle steamer „Kaiser Franz Josef I.“ was
launched and named in honor of the ruling Austrian monarch.
With its elegant silhouette and impressive side wheels, the
33 m long ship continues to delight all the guests that come
aboard. The „Kaiser“ has been in service since the very beginning of passenger navigation on the Wolfgangsee and remains
the star of the fleet.
Taking a cruise on „Kaiser Franz Josef I.“ or any of the other

The SchafbergBahn is in service every Friday to Sunday during
all four Advent weekends. Steam trains run through the winter
forests as far as Dorneralm at 1015 m (timetable changes due
to inclement weather are possible).

Hiking tip SchafbergBahn
FROM ST. WOLFGANG TO THE
SCHAFBERG SUMMIT AT 1783 M.
Conquer the mountain by foot on this
scenic hike! Duration: 3.5 hours. In St.
Wolfgang walk from the church down
the Sternallee and past the Försterhof.
Then take the path to the right, past
the Jausenhof Aschinger. For the next
1.5 hours hike straight up to the Dorneralm and then through the forest
to the Schafbergalm. From there you
can follow the marked path Nr. 20
to the summit. You will still cross the
railway tracks twice on this steep part
of the ascent. Good hiking shoes are
required!

ON THE OLD PILGRIMAGE PATH TO THE FALKENSTEIN
The old pilgrimage path between
St. Gilgen and St. Wolfgang takes about
3 hours to complete. This route offers
splendid natural scenery and the small
Falkenstein chapel is one of the
highlights along the way. The hike is
attractive for families with kids!
It is also possible to do a shortened
version of it, by only walking along the
lake between Fürberg and Ried-Falkenstein. Later you can comfortably return
by boat.

ST. WOLFGANG PARISH CHURCH
The parish church at St. Wolfgang has
been a popular pilgrimage destination
for several centuries. The architecturally
impressive church features the worldfamous, late Gothic altar made by
Michael Pacher. The church is located
close to St. Wolfgang Markt.

FROM STROBL TO ST. WOLFGANG,
AROUND THE BÜRGLSTEIN
This is an easy, 6 km long hike that leads
through some particularly idyllic scenery
around the Bürglstein. The path affords
many nice views of the lake and the town
of Strobl. The last stretch of the way is
shared with a bike path and leads along
a road. Once you reach St. Wolfgang you
can conveniently return
to Strobl by boat.

FROM STROBL TO GSCHWENDT,
BY WAY OF THE BLINKLINGMOOS
This 4 km long hike usually takes about an
hour to complete and is popular with kids.
Along the way you will find a 10 m
high look-out tower that provides
excellent views of the Blinklingmoos
natural preserve.
Much of the path is well maintained and
hence suitable for families with prams.
