Membership Committee
Thanks for the great support shown for the many ways to experience lifelong
learning at our recent Winter Celebration! It was good to see people having fun as
they sampled various warm weather and beach-related activities and food. We’re told
that we accomplished another desired outcome, to rejuvenate us in the middle of our
coldest season. Both entertainer, Flip Flop Dave Fogler, and WICS weather reporter,
Cheryl Lemke, also expressed how they enjoyed being with our ALL group. Special
thanks to the leaders of our activities for their clever and entertaining table demos,
discussions and games!
As this newsletter goes to print, ALL is now 346 members, so we are hopeful to
reach our goal for this year of 350 members. Remember that you have until Sat.,
April 30, to gain discounts to your own fee for next year when a new member lists
you as a referring member on their application. Please keep in mind that $5 per new
member will be subtracted from your own fee for your help in bringing a new
lifelong learner into the fold.

Tech Talk
The Tech Talk committee distributed technical assistance survey forms at the Winter Celebration to evaluate
the training selections of ALL members. The committee also received surveys via US mail. The surveys are
being reviewed and prioritized. The next step in the process of program development is to solicit individuals
with expertise in the various topics to help us enhance our technical skills.
The committee hopes to have the program up and running this summer. The next committee meeting will be
Tues., March 1, at 2 p.m. in room 1105 at the Millennium Center.

Chautauqua: The path to citizenship
Chautauqua concludes its immigration series on Thurs., March 17, with a closer look at the complex
paperwork process of citizenship application, and organizations that exist to assist the immigrant
applicant. Chautauqua will distribute handouts with a sampling of the requirements for citizenship and the
exam.
At the preceding Chautauqua programs on immigration, we reviewed the history of modern US immigration
policies and listened to new citizens share their personal stories and insights about the process of
assimilation. In our final program on immigration, we will follow the steps toward citizenship that they have
completed.
Our program will have representatives from the Immigration Project organization that serves the needs of
Central and Southern Illinois immigrants with the citizenship process and other services. The Immigration
Project has its roots in the Interfaith Refugee and Immigration Ministries established following the passage of
the Immigration and Control Act of 1986. They are located in Bloomington and serve clients in over 200
communities in a geographic area that consists of 120,000 square miles.
Please join Chautauqua from 1-3p.m. at the Trutter Center. Registration is required for this program.

WOW trips are scheduled on Wednesdays. Registration cost covers the charter bus transportation and the
driver’s gratuity. In addition, the trip may require a cash fee to cover other costs such as meals, tickets, or
tours. The motor coach departs from the J.C. Penney south parking lot at the corner of South Grand and
Dirksen Parkway in Springfield. Please wear your ALL name tag! Exact costs and times are listed within the
article.
WOW: Visiting Decatur sites
Join us on Wed., March 9, as we travel to Decatur and visit homes in the architectural
park of Millikin Place, the Hieronymus Mueller Museum, and discover how all these places
relate to each other.
At Millikin Place, we will tour the James Millikin Homestead. This beautifully restored
Victorian mansion built in 1876 was the home of former banker, James Millikin, and his
wife, Anna, who founded Millikin University.

We will also tour Frank Lloyd Wright’s Irving House. Since this home is a private residence, it is not always
available for viewing; but we were able to make special arrangements.
Inventor, Hieronymus Mueller, who holds over 500 patents, is Decatur’s “unsung genius.” Even though you
may never have heard of him, find out why you can’t turn on your faucet, go roller skating, get a drink at a
public fountain, or drive your car without thinking about his inventions. Come learn more about him and
discover the connection between Frank Lloyd Wright and the Mueller family.
A luncheon buffet of salads and mini deli sandwiches is included at Paco’s Sol Bistro in downtown Decatur.
However, it’s a cash bar for any soft drinks, tea, or coffee. Water is free.
Call LLCC Admission and Registration Services or go on-line to register for this trip before the 5 p.m.,
Thurs., March 3 deadline. The cost at time of registration is $23 for ALL members and $33 for guests. In
addition, each person must bring $17 in CASH, which will be collected on the bus to pay for the tours and
lunch. The motor coach departs at 9 a.m. and returns approximately 4 p.m.
COURSE CODES & FEES: LLL 108-01A (member, $23) or LLL 108-01B (guest, $33)

BRT CANCELLATION POLICY
In view of the need to change our scheduled February BRT speaker after the UPDATE had been printed, it is
timely to remind everyone of our policy regarding such changes. If for any reason the scheduled speaker cancels
or is replaced after the speaker has been announced in the UPDATE, members will be informed via an
ALL "email blast." Members who have already registered but lack an email address will be informed by
telephone.
Continued on page 4.

Continued from page 3.
In accordance with ALL BRT policy, members who have registered for a BRT may cancel a week before the
BRT and receive a full refund. If a replacement speaker has not been found by that time, we will cancel the
BRT and inform everyone who has registered. Those registrants will receive a full refund. However, if we have
a replacement speaker by the scheduled time, no refund will be made.
Once we've given the MCL Cafeteria a count, we are obliged to pay for that number of people whether or not
we have a speaker. Breakfast would still be served, and we would still have use of the room for socializing.
Springfield during World War I
Have you wondered how Springfield appeared in 1914-1918 during the WWI era? What changes have
occurred since then? That will be revealed at the Today’s Topic on Tues., March 15, in the Trutter Center at
10 a.m.
Mike Kienzler, Executive Director of the Sangamon County Historical Society, will tell us about the many
different aspects of life in Springfield and the surrounding area during WWI.
This ranges from the demographics of the community to industry and agriculture as well as the living
conditions of the time. This topic will provide us with insights into the development of our city. Please register
for this presentation.

Book Lovers
The Book Lovers group will be looking for adventure in our March book selections as we revisit
the Scottish born author, Robert Louis Stevenson. Last year, we enjoyed the historical fiction novel
Under the Wide and Starry Sky, about Stevenson and his American wife, Fanny. This year, we will
read and discuss two of Stevenson’s most famous works, Kidnapped and Treasure Island. You may
choose to read either of the two books.
Kidnapped is the classic adventure novel about a teenage boy, David Balfour, set in 18th century
Scotland. The story is fast paced, and the sword fighting is well described. Treasure Island tells the tale about a
boy who possesses a treasure map and embarks on a ship to an island in search of the treasure. However, there
are pirates on the ship, and they too are seeking the treasure.
Whichever book you choose to read this month, you will find a good action-packed, adventure story. Book
Lovers will meet on Wed., March 23, at 1 p.m. in room 1142 of Montgomery Hall.

Scribes
From the incomparable Erma Bombeck to Dave Barry, humor writers have entertained us. Writing
humor can be especially challenging. Are there secrets to incorporating humor into your writing? Our
mini workshop will explore some of the techniques to add a touch of humor to your writing.
For March’s optional writing prompt, Scribes will write about the topic, “Working 9 to 5.” Most
adults have spent a chunk of their life at work. Was work a grind? A calling? This is the opportunity to
write a memorable moment in your work life. You may bring 1-2 pages of the writing prompt or 1-2 pages
of any current writing project. All ALL members are welcome to share their writing or come and observe the
session. Please Note: Due to LLCC’s Spring Break, Scribes will meet on Thurs., March 17 at 10 a.m. in
Sangamon Hall, Room 1133.
