The Journey through Amateur Radio by Roland Turner
Sun, 8 May | 2pm
Seminar Room, Level 2
Free (registration required), visit heritagefest.sg for details
For a century, amateur radio operators or “hams” have built and operated personal radio stations
for recreation, long-distance communication, self-education and public service. A decade ago,
the hobby appeared to be in terminal decline because of the near-universal availability of mobile
internet and smartphones; yet today there are more licensed hams than ever before.
Peranakan author Josephine Chia nearly did not go to school
as her family was too poor in the 1950s. She was born and
brought up in Kampong Potong Pasir until its dissolution in
the 1970s. To help her fulfill her dream for an education, her
beloved mother sold nasi lemak to fund Josephine’s schooling.
In this talk, Josephine will share her memories of her kampong,
her Peranakan heritage and life in Singapore in the 1950s.

This talk follows one man’s journey from talking around the world as a 14-year-old Boy Scout
to his current project to bounce radio signals off the moon. Roland Turner describes how the
evolution of radio affected hams, and explores the relationship between the appearance of the
maker movement and the resurgence of amateur radio.

Famously featuring the performances of twelve “pop yeh yeh” (Malay pop) bands and four
dance groups, A-Go-Go ’67 was completed during the final years of the Shaw Brothers’ Malay
Film Productions Ltd, marking the end of a vibrant era of Malay movie production in Singapore.
The movie was an attempt by the struggling Malay film industry to appeal to the Malay youths
of its era, whose disregard for Malay Cinema was a major factor contributing to the industry’s
demise. A-Go-Go ’67 presents viewers with an idea of the music and lifestyles of the Malay youth
from the “pop yeh yeh” era, through the age-old conflict between the conservatism of the older
generation and the new, emerging generation’s proclamations of freedom.

A “school by the sea” is an apt description of St Patrick’s School in Katong. Built on a six-hectare
plot of land bought by the De La Salle Brothers in 1897, the original school building dates back
to 1933. The school was well-received by the British colonial authorities and weathered the
Second World War as the headquarters for the Japanese Air Force as well as the Australian and
British hospitals. After the war, the Brothers returned and re-established the school to serve
Singapore’s nation-building needs. Many generations of St Patrick’s students have become
prominent members of society.

18 – 24 Apr: Dawson Place, Level 1, Atrium
9 – 15 May: Velocity @ Novena Square, Level 1, Atrium
WE: Defining Stories is an exhibition of photographs from the archives of The Straits Times and
the National Museum of Singapore Collection. This visual exhibition of headline photographs
takes you through significant moments of our nation’s history.
Revisit our turbulent march towards independence, the early years of our young society, as well
as the personality quirks that define us as Singaporeans today. Together, these vignettes form
a pictorial story of our home and identity, 51 years into our nationhood.
Singapore Portraits
28 Apr – 11 May: Aperia Mall, Level 1, Atrium
Free
Singapore Portraits is a tribute to some of Singapore’s most creative personalities. It features the
works of local artists, whose words and images collectively tell a story of Singapore. In addition
to the paintings and photographs are write-ups detailing the background of the artwork, social
and historical context, and artist biographies.
Romance, Hopes & Dreams
2 – 8 May: Hougang Mall, Level 2 and 4
9 – 15 May: Velocity @ Novena Square, Level 1, Atrium
Free
Marriage ceremonies are a whirlwind of joyous anticipation and activities. This exhibition brings
visitors through the months of intense preparation leading up to a wedding celebration and
explains the meaning behind the traditional marriage practices and beliefs of different ethnic
communities.
Trading Stories
1 – 15 May: Plaza Singapura, Level 4 (next to Customer Service Counter)
Free
Trading Stories is an exhibition on old trades in Singapore and how tradesmen have coped with
the challenges of changing times. Featuring the lives of six individuals who made their living
as a traditional goldsmith, movie poster painter, tukang urut (Malay confinement lady), Samsui
woman, poultry farmer and letter writer, the exhibition sheds light on some of Singapore’s old
trades through these personal stories.
All ticketed events and film screenings are available on a first come, first served basis.

in a space that was a former cinema run by the Army Kinema
Corporation when the precinct was still a British military barracks.
