Trop-Rock cd reviews from Blue Hen PHC member Kevin McGrath
We have said our good byes to another summer. I feel like we got ripped off by at least a month this
year. August being so rainy, it kept me from the pool more than it let me in… So now it is up to each of
us to keep summer alive in our hearts, heads and attitudes through the coming months of cold. A little
Trop Rock music usually helps me along the way, well that and maybe a boat drink or two.
I had an unfortunate accident a few months ago that I am still working to recover from, I dropped the
hard disk that contained my entire music collection so I have been working as time permits to restore as
much of that as I can. Consequently I only have 1 new album to review, but I am going to take a look
back at a couple older ones and maybe even introduce you to an artist that you may or may not be
familiar with.
The Artist you may or may not know is Pat Dailey. He plays a few shows in Key West every year but is
not typically lumped in with the Trop Rock Genre, although in my opinion he should be. He is a fixture in
Put In Bay and has been for many years. Pat enjoyed a close friendship with Shel Siverstein and the two
co-wrote many of the songs that Pat has recorded over the years.
Pats music is steeped in a folk music style but infused with a lot of fun and good times. The Album we
are going to take a look at this month is probably the one that you have heard of if you have heard of
him at all. It is a 1997 release called Raw Bars.
Raw Bars is a humorous but an adults only record so take care in listening around the ‘keets or friends
and family who may not have a great sense of humor. The track list should give this away:
1. It's So Big
2. Nymphomaniac
3. Biological Clock
4. Doobie and a Brew
5. My Puddin's Putting Out
6. Just How Drunk Are We Gonna Get
7. You Don't Have to Be Drunk
8. Raw Bars
9. Resident Rapper
10. Don't It Get You Right Here
11. I've Got To Be Drunk To Do That
12. Aphrodisiac (Oysters)
My favorites are “You Don’t Have to Be Drunk”, “Doobie And A Brew” and “Nymphomaniac”. All three
of these songs show the great sense of humor of Dailey and Siverstein.
I can relate to You Don’t Have To Be Drunk” very well, In fact the Chorus may have been sung to me a
time or two in my life… “You don’t have to be drunk to be an asshole, you can be an asshole on your
own” Doobie and a brew is a little ditty about running off with your friends girlfriend and how one deals
with it and Nymphomanic, well that kind of speaks for itself, lets just say it is Pats idea of a dream girl.
(Yes ladies, there are a few chauvanistic moments to this album, but it is all in good fun).
Raw bars, while not an album you would play Daily (like the pun?) it is a great addition to ones library for
whenever a light hearted mood arises.
The next Record I am going to recommend as a Staple in any self respecting Trop Rock Collection is
Magic Chair by John Reno and the Half Fast Creekers. You may recognize John as
the partner of John Patti in the Folgers jingle contrst that many of us voted in this past spring. If you
have never heard John Reno before you are in for a treat with this album. This is another irreverant fun
frolic through the musical universe. Acouple of songs will probably be familiar to some. I Lobster But I
Never Flounder is an old Bobby Braddock tune that John and the HFC do a wonderful cover of, also on
this record is a recording of an old traditional sea shanty Drunken Sailor. This song is over 120 years old
but John and the boys breathe some modern life into it. As an interesting side note to the Football
loving parrotheads, the first song on this record, Heartaches and Hangovers is co-written by none other
than former NFL quaterback Kenny “the Snake” Stabler.
Finally, I can not put out a Album Review column in a Parrot Head Newsletter and not include the brand
new Jimmy Buffet Album, my God what would you people think? (in my best buffet impression)
Jimmy has just relaesed Volcano Live 2011. This is a collection of live versions
of his classic 1979 release Volcano. These songs were all recorded this past summer at his shows so they
are also current and fresh. One of my favorite parts of any Jimmy show and live album is the banter
between Jimmy and the audience and Jimmy and the band. That is all included on here too. Although I
know most of you probably have the Studio version, and if you are a music collector like me, you
probably have most if not all of the songs in a live version on one album or another, I still think this is a
fine addition to any collection as it brings these classics songs together in one place and injects new life
into some of them.
Well that is it for this issue phellow parrotheads until the winter edition keep on trockin’!
Thanks, Kev! We should note here that one of the singer/songwriters who recently
performed for our club’s social at the Blue Parrot (Jim Hoehn) has produced a series of
Trop-Rock cd’s called “Thongs In The Key Of Life”. There are 4 cd’s in the series and for
those of you who are curious about the Trop-Rock genre but don’t know where to start, we
highly suggest this series as a great way to begin. The first two cd’s have been out of
print for some time but are now available once again. For more info you can contact Jim
Hoehn at [email protected].
By the way, in case you thought we were joking about saving those pop tops…
And that’s all, folks!
“Hen Scratchings” is published quarterly by the Blue Hen Parrot Head Club…
