Existing technologies are the
building blocks for
automated vehicles
2010 to 2020
• Traffic jam Assist
• Automated Valet Parking
• Automated highway

Driver
continuously
performs the
longitudinal or
lateral dynamic
driving task
The other driving
task is performed
by the system
Driver must
monitor the
dynamic driving
task and the
driving
environment at all
times
System performs
longitudinal and
lateral driving task
in a defined use
case
Driver does not need to
monitor the dynamic
driving task nor the
driving environment at
all times; however he
must be attentive to and
follow system’s requests
/ warnings to resume
the dynamic driving task.
System performs
longitudinal and lateral
driving task in a defined
use case. Recognizes its
performance limits and
requests driver to
resume the dynamic
driving task with
sufficient time margin.
Driver is not
required during
defined use case
System performs
the lateral and
longitudinal
dynamic driving
task in all
situations in a
defined use case.
System performs
the lateral and
longitudinal
dynamic driving
task in all
situations
encountered during
the entire journey.
No driver required.

Connected -> Autonomous
• Connected among vehicles
• Links with smart infrastructure
• Step by step automisation of driving
• High cooperation public/private
partners for compatible systems and
information exchange

Adaptability & agility of regulation
An example
Vienna Convention on Road traffic -> 8 Nov 1968
• High level of automation but not yet autonomous driving:
– Vehicle systems taking over quasi all driving tasks = conform (technical prescriptions) Driver
must be able to assume control in case of vehicle system alerts
– Amendment at UN level
• Full automation :
– Vehicle systems taking over all driving tasks = conform (technical prescriptions) In such
event no driver, no driving skills / physical or mental ability, etc. required.
– Amendment at UN level
