Welcome
Once again, I must CONGRATULATE you on yet another win; BIG LUCY wins at Penrith
on the 12th March, and what a win it was too – very impressive!!!
This brings your total number of wins to an amazing 12 wins by five individual winners
from your eight fillies. Hopefully there is more to come with Glitzy Gal now at the
trials and to have one more run tomorrow (Wednesday, 18th March) at Rangiora,
before looking to make her race debut and Alannah Hall due to go to the workouts in
a couple of weeks and then on to race after that.
You now have ALANNAH HALL (1 win, $4,851), BIG LUCY (3 wins, $21,202), LINDA
LOVEGRACE (6 wins, $168,524, Group 1 winner), LOVE IS A DRUG (1 win, $31,265)
and CTHEBALLERINA (1 win, $5,966) as your 5 winners, as well as the placed PINUP
PONY (3 places, $4,460) and the raced but unplaced HOTHOOVES ($2,950), so you
now have 12 wins, 13 seconds and 5 thirds on the board and total gross stakes of
$239,218 – a great achievement !!!
Lucy, Linda, Tina, Judy and Pinny have all been racing over the last month, so there
has certainly been a lot happening.
Lucy has had three starts since arriving in Australia this time, for two ordinary efforts
for a 6th and a 7th placing, before her excellent win last Thursday at Penrith. Linda has
only had one race, for a disappointing 12th placing in the Northern Oaks, but this was
seemingly as a result of the lingering effects of the kick she received about 10 days
prior. Tina has had three starts, all at Auckland, for a 3rd and a 4th placing, together
with an 11th in the Oaks, while Judy has been busy having four starts, all also at
Auckland, for two 6th placings, an 8th in the Oaks and her latest good effort for a nice
2nd placing. Pinny has been struggling a little with only a 5th placing at Stratford and
an 8th and a 6th placing at Manawatu, so the time has now come for her to be retired.
This is obviously disappointing for all, but the realistic decision had to be made.
It appears that none of your fillies will be racing this week, so time to take stock and
prepare for future racing.
At this stage it is likely that Love Is A Drug will race at Alexandra Park on the 27 th
March and Linda soon after; and maybe Lucy again soon too, so that will give us
something to look forward to.

Mark Purdon & Natalie Rasmussen :-
Alannah Hall (Angus Hall – Regal Volo):Because of the minor setback she had in
training last month when she strained a
back joint, Alannah is still a couple of
weeks away from trialling and will therefore
miss the NZ Trotting Oaks this Friday at
Addington.
Mark says, “I’m happy with her and she’s
trotting nicely, but I suggest that we send
her North, as the stakes are better up there
and we’d like to aim her at the Jewels.”

So, Alannah is booked to travel North in the
next couple of days and it is planned that she will transfer to Barry Purdon’s stable to
do her racing in the North.
There are two classic races at Alexandra Park, that Alannah could compete in if she
comes up well enough and these are the Group 2 $60,000 Lonestar Riccarton 3YO
Trotters Sires Stakes Championship and the Group 1 $80,000 Breckon Farms Northern
Trotting Derby, on the 24th April, but these are open to the colts and geldings too, so
Alannah will really have to be on her game to be considered for these races.
But first she will have to trial well and to the satisfaction of Barry Purdon, and perform
in any lead-up races, as ultimately winning money to count towards qualifying for the
Jewels is the main aim.
It will be great to see Alannah in the North, so let’s hope she can perform well and we
can all enjoy watching her compete in some races up here and maybe even in some of
the big ones.
Big Lucy (Badlands Hanover – Halcyon Franco):After her trip away to race at Marlborough,
Lucy returned home to prepare for a much
bigger trip over to Australia. She left on
the 18th February and flew to Sydney,
where she was to contest the $20,400
Argent Stakes Form 700 NSW Oaks Heat 1,
for 3YO Fillies, over 2400m, on the 21st
February.
This was in an attempt to qualify for the
Group 1 $200,000 Form 700 NSW Oaks
Final, to be staged on the 1st March, at
Tabcorp Park Menangle.

Lucy drew Barrier No. 2 and was to be driven by Natalie Rasmussen.

She was sent out third favourite for this race and Natalie just eased Lucy off the
mobile gate and looked to settle one-out-and-3-back in the running.
She remained there until with a little over a lap-to-go Ameretto came forward to sit
parked and Lucy was the one-out-and-4-back. Down towards the end of the back
straight the last time, Lucy was moved to the 3-wide line with cover behind the
favourite Delight Me and rounded the home turn in that position.
Lucy battled on well in the home straight, but couldn’t quite finish it off well enough
and finished in 6th placing, just missing qualifying for the Oaks Final by 0.5m.
The winner was Delight Me, in a fast time of 2:54.1 (MR 1:56.7), with closing
sectionals of 56.2 and 27.9. Lucy was officially 13.4m from the winner.
Lucy was then to race next back at Tabcorp Park Menangle, on the 3rd March. This
was in the $7,140 Form 700 Mobile Pace, for 3YO pacers, over 1609m, where she
drew Barrier No. 2 once again, but was to be driven by Luke McCarthy in this race.
Lucy made a good beginning from the mobile start, was crossed early by Zoeys Boy
who left very fast from the outside barrier at No. 10. She enjoyed a nice trail as they
went through the first quarter in 28.8 and remained there throughout the race.
As they approached the home straight and began to sprint, Lucy just lost a length on
the leader and really only battled in the run home, to finish in 7th placing, 13.3m from
the winner.
The winner was Sports Chaton, a 3YO gelding first-up for a year, in the quick time of
1:54.2, with good closing sectionals of 55.8 and 27.7.
Lucy was to race next, at Penrith, on the 12th March. This was in the $6,120 Sunblest
Cleaning Services Pace, for C0 3YO & Older pacers, over 1720m. Lucy drew Barrier
No. 4 and this time was to be driven by Todd McCarthy in the 10-horse field.
Lucy made a good beginning but was unable to get in and was caught 3 and 4-wide
early, until as the field settled into their positions going down the back the first time
and Allnight Kiss went to the front, Lucy was left parked.
Soon after, Lucy could have slotted in to be 3-back the markers, but Todd decided to
stay in the running line and Lucy was to race without cover in the breeze throughout.
Todd kicked the plugs going down the back the final time and Lucy moved forward
quickly to get on even terms with the leader. Rounding the home turn, Lucy put her
head in front, as the two leaders got away on the rest of the field by some 5 or 6
lengths.
Lucy maintained a determined run and drew clear in the home straight to come away
and win very nicely, by a comfortable 7.5m margin, with 18.1m back to the 3rd horse.
Lucy’s winning time was 2:05.1 (MR 1:57.1), with the closing sectionals completed in
57.9 and 28.6. Lucy’s Mile Rate was the fastest of the night, so it certainly was a
good effort.

Linda Lovegrace (Bettor’s Delight – Linda Grace):After her race in the Nevele R Fillies Series Heat at Ashburton on the 7th February,
where she ran a good 2nd placing, Linda was to head back up North on the 13th
February, to race again at Alexandra Park.
This was scheduled to be in the $15,000 Pascoes The Jewellers Northern Oaks Prelude,
on the 20th February, where she drew Barrier No. 4 in an 8-horse race, but was to
subsequently have to be scratched after receiving a kick from another horse in the
paddock, four days before the race.
Mark reported, “She got a kick in the knee yesterday [16th February]. It’s not too
serious, but it was blown up this morning and it’s awkward to put the knee boot on,
so the vet has recommended that she be treated with an antibiotic and an antiinflammatory for the next couple of days and she should be OK for next week [the
Oaks].”
So, Linda was to have her recommended treatment and then be nominated to race
next on the 27th February, the first night of the Auckland Cup Carnival, in the Group 1
$125,000 Pascoes The Jewellers Northern Oaks, for 3YO Fillies, over 2700m.
Linda drew Barrier No. 5 and was to be driven by Ricky May on this occasion.
The Good Sports Syndicate achieved the AMAZING feat of having three runners in this
prestigious race – what an achievement !!!
Linda went out well from the mobile start, but was caught 3-wide around the first
bend and was pacing quite roughly, struggling to get to the parked position, which she
finally managed to do after they’d gone almost 600m. Linda was to remain in the
breeze until they had travelled more than a lap, when Joanne’s A Delight came
forward to give her cover.
Supersonic Miss also went round and she moved to the parked position with about
1300m to go, so Linda was now 3-back in the running line. Linda remained there until
approaching the 400m pole, when she began to give ground and went back through
the field, to finish a long and lonely 12th and last placing, still pacing roughly as she
did so.
The winner was The Orange Agent, in a NZ Record time of 3:18.8 (MR 1:58.4), with
closing sectionals of 55.1 and 27.4.
Ricky said afterwards, “She went bloody awful. She felt like she was going to break
into the first corner. She went terrible. She paced awful the whole way. I got her up
on the bit, as I thought that might help, but she just was awful.”
The Stipendiary Stewards Report stated, “LINDA LOVEGRACE paced roughly
throughout and tired over the concluding stages. A subsequent veterinary
examination revealed no obvious abnormalities.”

It was thought later that Linda’s knee was bruised more severely from the kick she
received than was expected and that she was feeling this and so not pacing very
kindly at all.
Mark has reported, “She had deep seated bruising from that kick she received and I
think the impact when hitting the ground was jarring her up and she was really feeling
it. She had a week off in the water walker and she’s not sore on it at all and there’s
no pain. She has also been in season. She worked well last week and we’ve brought
her back down to Christchurch now. She should be racing early April.”
Linda’s next aim will be to qualify for the Nevele R Fillies Series. With her 2 nd placing
in the heat she contested at Ashburton, because there seems to be very few fillies
contesting the series so far, she may well qualify for the Final, but Mark is wanting to
make sure of this and if Linda is ready to go, she will contest the next heat at Forbury
Park, on the 2nd April, otherwise the last heat in the series at Addington, on the 23rd
April.
I will advise you of Linda’s impending programme as soon as it is confirmed.

Ctheballerina (Bettor’s Delight – Cheyenne Girl):After her win at Thames on the 1st February, Tina was race next at Alexandra Park on
the 13th February, along with Judy who was in the same race.

This was the $20,000 Nevele R 3YO Fillies (Heat 2) Mobile Pace, over 1700m, in which
she was to draw Barrier No. 3 in a 7-horse field and was to be driven by stable Junior
Driver Tony Cameron once again, as Tony had three runners in this race. It was a
strong field with the likes of Democrat Party and The Orange Agent lining up in it.
Tina made a reasonable beginning and was able to slot in down on the markers, 3back in the running. She remained there throughout, until they entered the home
straight, where she was able to take the passing lane run, as Democrat Party and The
Orange Agent had drawn away from the others.
Tina ran home well to finish a very good 3rd placing, beating all other runners home,
other than the two hot pots who had ran away from the rest of the field.
The winner was The Orange Agent, in a very good time of 2:00.5 (MR 1:54.1), just
0.1 seconds off the NZ Record, with very fast closing sectionals of 54.7 and 27.4
seconds. Tina’s own time was a very respectable 2:02.5, which is a Mile Rate of
1:55.9.
Tony said, “She went good. They went some time too. She finished it off pretty well,
even though we were a way behind the other two.”
Tony Herlihy added, “That was a pretty good run again. We’ll just see how she comes
through it and look to where we go next.”

Tina came through her run well and was to race next, once again at Alexandra Park,
on the 27th February, the first night of the Auckland Cup Carnival.
This was in the prestigious Group 1 $125,000 Pascoes The Jewellers Northern Oaks,
for 3YO Fillies, over 2700m. Tina drew Barrier No. 8, the outside of the Front Row
and was to be driven by Todd Mitchell on this occasion.
As I have said, The Good Sports Syndicate had the AMAZING achievement of having
three runners in this Group 1 race.
Todd attempted to ease Tina back off the mobile gate at the start, but she was quite
keen and did fight him briefly, but Todd managed to draw her back and settle in the
running line at the back of the field.
With about 2200m to run, Todd moved Tina down on to the markers to be 7-back in
the running. Going down the back the second-to-last time, a few moves were made
and this allowed Tina to move up to be 5-back on the markers.
She remained there for the rest of the journey, but only battled in the home straight,
to finish in11th placing.
The winner was The Orange Agent, in a new NZ Record time of 3:18.8 (MR 1:58.4),
with closing sectionals of 55.1 and 27.4.
Todd said, “She got a bit stirred up in the prelim [preliminary warm up], so it was a
bit harder to bring her back off the gate. It was always going to be hard from the
draw. She got the wobbles about the half [800m to go], as they were going a bit fast
for her. She has got a nice way of going, but she’s still a bit of a dummy. Back in her
own grade, she should be competitive.”

Tina was then to race next, once again at Alexandra Park, on the 6th March, Auckland
Cup Night. This was in the $20,000 Eye Magazine Mobile Pace, for 3YO & Older C1
pacers, over 2200m. Tina drew Barrier No. 2, coming in to No. 1 with a scratching, in
a small 5-horse field and was to be driven by Todd Mitchell once again, as Tony had
another runner in the field which he was to drive.
Tina couldn’t muster the early speed out of the gate and was to settle 4-back on the
markers. When the speed went on down the back the first time as Little Rascal made
a play for the lead, Tina struggled to keep up, but as things settled down inside the
1200m mark, the gaps in the field closed and she was now 3-back on the markers.
As they passed the 500m point, Todd moved Tina out into the running line, but as her
stablemate began to weaken out in front and come back through the field, Tina was
pushed out 3 and 4-wide by Delightful Offer rounding the home turn. Tina fought on
well in the run home to finish in 4th placing, 5.2 lengths from the winner. The winner
was Delightful Offer, the favourite and a ballot from the Northern Derby, in a fast time
of 2:41.9 (MR 1:58.4), with closing sectionals of 59.2 and 29.0.
Todd said, “She went really good. She was running in and running out most of the
time. When they put that 28 quarter in, that found her out a bit. I thought Blair’s
one [Blair Orange on Can’t Explain It] was going to struggle a bit and we might get
third, but she came to the end of it. Backing up from last week would’ve been hard
for her too, but back in the C1 Fillies grade she’ll be OK.”
Tony added, “She went good. I might just give her a freshen-up now.”

So, Tina is to have a little freshen-up and has been sent for a short 10-day break out
in the paddock. I’m sure this will help her a lot at this stage of her racing career and
we can look forward to seeing her back on the track in a few weeks time.

Cran Dalgety :-
Glitzy Gal (Bettor’s Delight – Diamonds N Gold):As advised last month, things had started to progress quite well with Glitzy in her
training and she was ready to attend the Mid Canterbury Trials at Ashburton, on the
3rd March. Glitzy competed in a Co Mobile Pace, over 2400m, drawing Barrier No. 1
and was to be driven by Mark Fuller.
Glitzy got away OK from the mobile start to settle 3-back on the markers, but after
only about 200m, she had lost touch with the first two, by the best part of 4 or 5
lengths. As they turned into the home straight for the first time, the gaps were closed
up and Glitzy remained 3-back on the markers.
As Glitzy’s stablemate Tenacious Bromac led approaching the 400m pole, the trailing
horse pulled out to make its move, giving Glitzy a run up the inner and into the trail.
In the home straight with 250m left to go, Glitzy obtained a run up the inside and
finished off her run well to get up and win nicely. Glitzy’s winning time was 3:04.2
(MR 2:03.4), with closing sectionals of 59.7 and 28.4. The winning margin was
officially a neck.

Cran reported, “We’ve gone public. The price has come down now. She went a little
rough after 200m and lost a bit of ground, then sat 3-back the fence and squirted up
the lane and won nicely. Bettor’s Delights can be a bit casual, but she did it quite
nicely. I was wrapped. We’ve made a good start. Her heart rate was up and she had
a bit of a blow, so she should improve on that. We’ll look to go again next week and
then she should be ready to race.”
So, Glitzy was to return to the trials the following week, on the 9th March. This was at
the Metropolitan TC Trials, at Addington. Glitzy competed in a C0 Mobile Pace, over
1950m and drew Barrier No. 2 and was to be driven by Jordan Simpson.
Glitzy got out well from the start and secured a nice trail early, but going into the first
turn she rolled into a gallop. She settled quickly and maintained her trailing position,
however halfway round the turn Glitzy galloped again, this time for about 40 metres
and losing considerable ground, to settle at the tail of the 5-horse field.
Glitzy began a move forward down the back the final time with about 700m to run,
but was pushed out 3-wide when Mickey Jay came out beside her. Glitzy was forced
to go around the final bend 3-wide and began to pace roughly, actually breaking up
again and losing probably 4 or 5 lengths. Glitzy got going again, but it was too late,
but she did finish off her run quite well to finish in 4th placing, but still some 6 lengths
from the 3rd placed runner.
The winner was Tiger Minx, in a time of 2:28.9 (MR 2:02.8), with good closing
sectionals in 58.4 and 28.8.
Cran said, “We took Glitzy Gal to the trials at Addington on Monday. She ran a solid
4th but was a little mixed gaited pacing around the last bend which we can help with a
change of rigging. She did improve fitness wise from the outing but in conclusion we
will trial her once more before looking for a race start.”
Cran has since reported (from Hong Kong, I might add – what dedication!), “We’re
going to put stretchies on her hopples and this might help her with her mixed gait.
She’ll have one more trial, to get her better mannered and pacing smoothly and then
hopefully we can look for a race for her.”
So Glitzy is to have a further educational run at the Rangiora Workouts tomorrow, the
18th March. Glitzy is in Heat 9, timed to start at 1:00pm, a C0 Mobile Pace, over
2000m, where she has drawn No. 1, in an 8-horse field that includes Ken’s good 3YO
trotter Prince Fearless in with the pacers, so it will be interesting to see how Glitzy
goes. Providing she does everything right, after this workout run, Cran will look for a
suitable race for Glitzy to make her race debut in. I will update you with details as
soon as these are available.

Hothooves (Bettor’s Delight – Matter Of Fact):Hotty went to Breckon Farms for her extended spell, after having foot troubles, but
with a continuation of her lameness, a further x-ray of her foot was arranged and
revealed a 1.5cm incomplete fracture of the pastern. So, it was deemed necessary for
her to have a screw put in her pastern to stop the fracture becoming worse and/or
splitting completely.

Surgery was conducted in the Hamilton Veterinary Equine Hospital on the 23 rd
February and all went well with this procedure.

Scott Yarndley at Breckon Farms reports, “Hothooves will be out of box come this
Monday and into a small confined area. She has picked up really well condition-wise
and I am very happy with her at this time.”
So, it sounds like Hotty is well on the way to recovery, so let’s hope that her fracture
heals well and she can make it back to the racetrack in time.
Hotty is likely to have her planned 6 months spell, which will give her the chance to
get over all her troubles completely, but she will be monitored as things progress and
decisions made accordingly.
We can now only wait and hope for the best.
Love Is A Drug (Art Major – Loma Fay):After travelling to Christchurch to compete in the $160,000 PGG Wrightson NZ
Yearling Sales Series Championship, where she finished an excellent 3 rd placing, Judy
returned home, coming through her trip and race well and was then to race next at
Alexandra Park on the 13th February.
This was in the $20,000 Nevele R 3YO Fillies (Heat 2) Mobile Pace, over 1700m. Judy
drew Barrier No. 4 in this 7-horse field that also included your filly Ctheballerina and
was to be driven by Brent Mangos. It was certainly a strong field, containing the likes
of Democrat Party and The Orange Agent in the line-up.
Judy got out well from the mobile start, but was to settle in the breeze early and
remained there until the favourite The Orange Agent came forward at the bell to sit
parked and give Judy some cover.
They went down the back in a quick 27.3 quarter and as the sprint really went on at
the 400m mark, Judy just lost a little ground on the first two, Democrat Party and The
Orange Agent and was to battle in the run home, to finish in 6th placing. While she
was some 12.1 lengths from the winner, Judy was only 2.3 lengths from 3 rd, who just
happened to be Tina, as the two hot pots cleared out from the rest of the field.
The winner was The Orange Agent, in a very good time of 2:00.5 (MR 1:54.1), just
0.1 seconds off the NZ Record, with very fast closing sectionals of 54.7 and 27.4
seconds. Judy’s own time was still a respectable 2:03.0, which is a Mile Rate of
1:56.4.
Brent said, “They went just a bit quick for her. It didn’t feel like they were going the
first part, but they certainly went down the back. It was just a bit too much for her.”
Barry Purdon added, “It’s just another class. She’s having a bit of a blow too. We’ll
have a look and might even have a go at the Oaks.”

Judy came through her race well and was then to race again the following week, on
the 20th February, at Alexandra Park once again.
This was in the $14,999 Pascoes The Jewellers Northern Oaks Prelude Mobile Pace, for
3YO Fillies, over 2200m. Judy drew nicely in another hot field, at Barrier No. 2 and
was once again to be driven by Brent Mangos.
Judy was out well from the mobile, but once again was to land in the parked position
early. She remained there, slowly moving forward and closer to the leader Joanne’s A
Delight, until Supersonic Miss came forward with about 1100m to run to sit in the
breeze and give Judy cover.
They went down the back in a 28 quarter and turning for home Judy was still just in
behind them, but just battled in the home straight to finish in 6 th placing once again, 4
lengths from the winner in a time of 2:43.2 (MR 1:59.4).

The winner was Supersonic Miss, in a time of 2:42.4 (MR 1:58.8), with quick closing
sectionals of 55.5 and 27.4.
Brent said, “She wasn’t too bad. She’s just not up to those good ones.”
Barry added, “She actually went quite good.”

So, Judy was to back up again the following week, on the 27th February, once again at
Alexandra Park, the first night of the Auckland Cup Carnival.
This was in the prestigious Group 1 $125,000 Pascoes The Jewellers Northern Oaks,
for 3YO Fillies, over 2700m. Judy drew Barrier No. 6 and was to be driven by Todd
Macfarlane on this occasion.
As I said previously, Judy was the third of The Good Sports Syndicate fillies to
compete in this prestigious race – an AMAZING achievement !!!
Todd eased Judy off the gate from her widish draw and slotted down behind runners
to find the markers and settle 5-back.
With about 1700m to run, Todd was able to get Judy nicely off the markers and into
the running line, landing on the back of Linda Lovegrace, to settle one-out-and-4-back.
When Linda started to give a bit of ground down the back the last time, Todd was
forced to start his move 3-wide and although he was able to slot back in around the
final bend, Judy couldn’t go with them when the speed really went on and just battled
in the home straight to finish in 8th placing, some 16.3 lengths from the winner.

Todd said afterwards, “She went not too bad. The time found her out really. I had to
go a bit earlier than I wanted. Her stablemate; well not really, but that Linda
Lovegrace was stopping and we just battled in the run home really.”

Judy was to be given a quiet time at home over the next few days, to allow her to get
over the rather hard racing she had endured over her last three starts. She was then
ready to race again last Friday night, the 13th March, at Alexandra Park. This was in
the $13,500 Have Your Conference At Alex Park Mobile Pace, for 3YO & Older Fillies &
Mares C1-C2 with Conditions, over 2200m. Judy drew well at Barrier No. 2 in a 9horse field and was to be driven by Zac Butcher.
Judy got out quickly from the mobile gate to take the early lead and she remained
there throughout and was travelling well when the favourite She’s Smooth came to sit
parked just inside the 1200m mark and the pace quickened. Judy bowled along nicely
and led them into the home straight where Lusty Mac who had trailed her throughout
the race, took the passing lane run and finished the better of the two to go on and
win, with Judy finishing a very good 2nd placing.
The winner was Lusty Mac, in a time of 2:43.5 (MR 1:59.5), with the closing
sectionals in 57.0 and 27.2. Judy was beaten by 1½ lengths, with a further 2 lengths
back to the 3rd horse.
Zac said, “That was good. I was happy with that. We were never going to beat that
thing [Lusty Mac], once she was on our back. She does keep trying.”

Judy has come through her race well and it is planned that she will race again on the
27th March, once again at Alexandra Park.

Pinup Pony (Art Major – Tarena Jay):After her race at Thames on the 1st February, unfortunately Pinny was kicked by
another horse in the float on the way home and was to have a quiet few days, before
attending the Cambridge Workouts on the 14th February.
Pinny competed in a C0 Mobile Pace, over 2200m, that had only 3 runners, with Pinny
drawing Barrier No. 3 and being driven by Ben Butcher.
Pinny dropped in to trail off the mobile gate, following her stablemate Hvar
throughout. At the 400m mark Ben pulled Pinny out and she ran home well to finish
in 2nd placing.
The winner was Hvar, in a slow time of 2:57.2 (MR 2:09.5), with the closing sectionals
completed in 60.0 and 28.3. Pinny finished ¾ length from the winner.
Ben said, “She went OK. The one in front, Hvar, didn’t want to go, so we went no
time and I just popped at the quarter and we ran from there.”
So, Pinny was then ready to travel down to Stratford, to compete on the grass there,
on the 22nd February.

This was in the $6,000 Dairymaster/ITM Stratford Fillies & Mares Mobile Pace, for C0
3YO & Older Fillies & Mares, over 1800m. Pinny drew Barrier No. 8 (outside of the
Front Row) in a 9-horse field and was to be driven by David Butcher.
David eased Pinny off the gate from her wide draw and settled back in the field, 4back in the running line. Going down the back, when Catchmedream looped the field
to sit parked, Pinny was relegated to be last in the field.
Just inside the 600m point, several runners began their moves forward and Pinny also
moved into the 3-wide line with cover. She was 4-wide, still with cover, as they
turned for home and David waited patiently before hooking out to make his run.
Pinny finished off her race very well, flashing down the outside to finish in 5th placing,
but only 1.3 lengths from the winner.
The winner was Fracture in a time of 2:27.2 (MR 2:11.5), with closing sectionals in
66.0 and 29.4.
David said, “She went pretty good really. We had to settle a fair way back, so she
had to come the widest, but she finished it off well.”
Geoff added, “She went alright from where she was.
through the run and look at what next after that.”
We’ll see how she comes
Pinny came through this race fine and it was decided that she would travel to the two
day meeting of the Manawatu HRC to compete next.
The first day was on the 2nd March, where Pinny competed in the $6,000 Member’s
Mobile Pace, for 3YO & Older C0 pacers, over 2000m. She drew well at Barrier No. 3
and was to be driven by Shane Butcher.
Pinny was sent out favourite for this race and got away well at the start, but couldn’t
get passed the two runners inside her and was caught 3-wide into the first turn.
Pinny was to then settle in the parked position and going down the back the first time,
Shane had a play for the lead, but it wasn’t there and Pinny was left to sit in the death
for the remainder of the race.
Pinny had to do it tough and was gone with about 250m to go, weakening out to finish
in 8th placing, some 12.6 lengths from the winner and only beating home Billy The Bad
who refused to score up at the start.
The winner was God’s Delight, in a time of 2:32.0 (MR 2:02.3), with closing sectionals
in 60.4 and 29.8.
Shane said, “That was just a bit tough for her. I thought I would have a go for the
lead, but he wasn’t going to hand up. She just battled in the end.”
Geoff added, “It was a pretty disappointing run, even though she had to do it tough.
We’ll just have to see how she goes on the second day.”

So, Pinny was to line up on the second day of the Manawatu HRC Meeting, on the 4 th
March.
This was in the $6,000 Allan McNeill Chartered Accountants Mobile Pace, for 3YO &
Older C0 pacers, over 2000m. Pinny once again drew Barrier No. 3 and was to be
driven on this occasion by David Butcher.
Pinny once again made a good beginning from the mobile and was briefly in the oneone position, until rounding the first bend, Portia, the horse in front of Pinny managed
to slot down into the trail, leaving Pinny once again parked. At the end of the back
straight the first time, with about 1400m to go, first Cherry Evans, then Sossusvlei
came forward to sit parked to give Pinny initially the one-one, then to be one-out-and3-back. Then going into the back the final time the leader Local Yokel moved out and
rolled into a gallop and the front runners had a shuffle up, which left Pinny once again
situated in the one-one.
David had Pinny ready to pounce as they turned for home, but she was flat in the run
home and only battled in the home straight to finish in 6th placing, 5.7 lengths from
the winner.
The winner was Portia, in a time of 2:31.4 (MR 2:01.8), with closing sectionals of 60.1
and 30.4.
David said, “She can’t really back-up. She’s never really been able to. She felt tired
really. She’s just got one win in her, but we can’t get it.”
Geoff said later, “This was really the last go to find that win we’ve been looking for.
She’s not the worst horse to work sometimes, but in the interest of the Syndicate, she
should be retired. It’s no use chasing that win forever. I’m sorry we couldn’t get it,
but that’s the way it goes sometimes.”
So, Geoff has spoken to Ken Breckon and it was agreed that Pinny should be retired
from racing.
This is a shame, but realistically this decision had to be made, so Pinny will return to
Breckon Farms, at least in the interim and the lease to the Syndicate cancelled.
