JEWELLERY DIRECTIONS
VOLUME EVOLUTION
When the price of gold flirted with $2,000 an ounce, designers scrambled to make fine jewellery that
wouldn’t give buyers sticker shock. The answer: volume. Pieces with cavernous space inside, underneath,
or worked into designs by way of cage-like effects became focal points. Pieces became 3-D, sometimes
housing gems or seemingly propping up solid canvases above with bridge-like supportive architecture
in miniature. Because of airy insides, designers can adopt bigger profiles, offering the illusion of size
without extra cost (a move borrowed from architecture and home accessory design).
Silhouettes: collar necklaces, bangles, drop earrings, pendants, dome and high-profile rings.
Aesthetic: modern, tribal, ethnic.
Materials: gold, diamonds, platinum, coloured stones.
Colours: white, yellow, and rose gold.

JEWELLERY DIRECTIONS
JEWEL-CHATTING
Jewellery rich in recognizable symbols (think hearts and letters, among others) help express what’s top
of mind even when words aren’t spoken. Love stories are silently told through metal-and-stone hearts and
arrows while initials plainly allude to the letters of your personal moniker or those of loved ones. And
while emerging jewellery collectors can relate to script, too, they might prefer styles with hashtag jargon
and texting shorthand à la OMG, LOL, and ROFL. Message jewellery is for lovers, sentimental souls, and
fans of surrealism alike, and has a perennial place in stores for a wide range of occasions—birthdays to
baptisms and push presents to anniversary gifts. As technology continues to enhance communication in
more immediate and varied ways, character jewellery helps to bridge generations and utter nonvocal
messages for wearers and serendipitous eyes to see.
Silhouettes: choker necklaces, pendants, stacking rings, charms, open cuffs, pieces with negative space,
volume and 3-D effects, mismatched earrings, studs and jackets
Aesthetic: modern, classic, whimsical, surreal
Materials: gold, diamonds, coloured stones, costum materials, leather
Colours: red, white, pink, green, yellow, purple, black
