Mid Murray Motorsport Park
After considerable efforts from a number of people we are very proud to announce that Southern Districts Car
Club Incorporated have been able to secure Australian Sports Foundation recognition of our efforts to continue
the growth and improvement of facilities at Mid Murray Motorplex.
It is quite astounding to see what has been accomplished within the last 12 months, our thanks go out to a
number of people who have put in considerable efforts to get what we currently have. We are by no means
finished – and will probably never be finished as the next feature/improvement comes to light.
Within this month’s magazine is an ASF Donation Form to enable you or your business to make a tax
deductable donation to benefit the Southern Districts Car Club Incorporated- Mid Murray Motorsport Park
project No 214220.
So please consider a donation to assist the development of Mid Murray Motorplex and complete a form on
your next attendance at a SDCC event or bring it along to the next general meeting.

Some good news!
I have just had a read of the August edition of the Volkswagen club of South Australia “Wagen News”.
On page 30 and 31 of this edition Henny Southam has reported her exploits on the inaugural Khanacross held
May 4th at the new Southern Districts Car Club Mid Murray Motorsport Park.
She writes about how tirelessly the club worked for 5 months to be ready for round 1 of the Khanacross series.
She quotes that the track is tight and twisty but lots of fun and hard work.
She has reported smiles on faces at the end of the competition.
There was also a comprehensive report with photographs on the inaugural rallysprint held on the 15 th June and
she entered this event with our own Michelle Green as co-driver. They were entered under Team Shitz and
Gigglz and I must say seeing them at the end of every stage that they were living up to the name!
Anyway, despite getting the bug bogged, they both had a ball and the club received much media attention via
Michelle’s face book page whilst the driver was trying to dig the car out!
The team ended up with an award and in the report she has thanked SDCC members and other helpers for an
event well run.
I thought that this needed to be shared with you all.

Scouts Rally Report by Mark and Adam Tillett
Scouts Rally SA 2014 on the first weekend of August was certainly an event that involved a large number of our
Club Members, many of which were ensuring the event was run to its usual high standard.
One of our Club Members Adam Tillett found himself in unfamiliar territory, Co-driving in the right-hand seat in
a Can-Am Maverick Side-by-side buggy on the weekend.
How did he end up there, you might ask?
Some of you may recall Naomi (Adam's significantly more famous wife) co-driving for Darryl Knight in the first
season of the SXS's in the 2012 ARC for the factory Can-Am team. Once the season had ended, Adam had an
opportunity to drive the Can-Am Commander at Darryl's property in Middleton and was very impressed by its
performance especially in lower speed tight twisty sections. Adam's own rally car the Toyota AE86 Levin that he
had been punting in the SARC in the mid-2000's was up for a complete refresh, so it has been tucked away for a
future restoration and once funds were available, the Tillett's purchased a new Can-Am Maverick with the
intention of Adam, Naomi & Lachlan (fresh from the 2014 JDP experience) competing in it in 2015.
As Adam had been researching the Maverick and asking questions of current owners, he spoke with Les Chivers
from NSW, who he had met previously at the Quit Forest Rally while co-driving for John Bruinsma in the big VE
Commodore. Les gave Adam some advice about the strengths and weaknesses of the Can-Am. Adam offered to
service crew for the Anglomoil/Can-Am team when they were here in August, which would have been mutually
beneficial for both. Les however was planning to himself drive in a second Maverick they had just purchased
and so the more pressing concern was to find a co-driver for Nathan. Adam could hardly refuse. "What better
way to find out how quick these things can really be, than to sit in one with a top team"
Saturday morning, on the way to the first stage was Adam's first experience of the buggy in motion and what an
initiation the first stage would be.
"I would never normally complain to an official about how cold the day or night was, because it sounds a bit
shallow when you're in layers of protective apparel & inside a car with exhaust pipes running past the floor to
keep you warm and the demister on. However on this occasion, I would say the competitors in the SXS's this
year may have bragging rights over who was the coldest"
As a result of the heavy rain leading up to the event including the Friday stages, many of the forest stages still
had large sections of standing water. This is great for photographers and spectators but not good for vehicles
that have no windscreen and co-drivers reading paper based pace notes.
"One of the stages went a bit like this…. Nine right, 50 metres eight left thru paper machete then muddy blob
straight on"
Driving down the road with a saturated race suit with 100km/h 2 degree winds blowing straight onto you,
certainly makes you realise you're alive. But despite this uncomfortable position, you could not wipe the grin
off Adam (or his driver Nathan's) face.
As a result of the high speed running, both of the factory buggies found themselves with reliability issues and
Nathan & Adam pounced to take the Heat 1 win, by over 5 minutes. On the second day the they managed to
hold on to third and were the leading Can-Am. The combined results for the weekend left Nathan & Adam on
the top step of the podium, taking the first ever Scouts Rally SA SXS victory ahead of Hughes/Piper &
Crocker/Foletta in their Polaris machines.
Adam will now join Nathan in Coffs Harbour for Rally Australia & they sit in second place outright in the
Championship. Be sure to come out to see Adam's new Maverick in the Rallysprint & Khanacross events at the

Mid-Murray Motorplex next year.
We’re open for Business
With a year under our belt we should all be proud of the progress and development of Mid Murray Motorplex
(MMM).
To those who have spent tireless hours fencing, painting, cleaning and the two outstanding accomplishments,
ablutions and shedding and the creation and development of the competition tracks.
To Wayne Mason as “project manager” ablutions and shedding a job well done as well as all who assisted in
these projects. It really is a pleasure to see events controlled from the shed.
After the initial planning and development work for the tracks by Michael Clements, Andrew Admiraal and
David Green, Ron Blakemore has taken to track development with a frenzy. At the recent Rallysprints there
were two courses selected for the events comprising approx. 7.5km and 6.9km which were more than a
challenge for all competitors.
It was always our plan to offer the facilities we are developing at MMM for the enjoyment of the motorsport
community of South Australia. So at a recent SDCC committee meeting there was discussion on hiring rates for
MMM.
The rates agreed upon are as follows
Private practice with a maximum of 6 vehicles with SDCC organizing day including
all relevant CAMS paperwork
Hire of Khanacross track only
$720.00
Hire of whole property but not including Khanacross
track
$1020.00
Hire of whole property including Khanacross track
$1220.00
Hire by clubs or groups
NOTE clubs/groups to arrange own CAMS permits
Whole of property but not including Khanacross track
$750.00
Whole of property including Khanacross track
$950.00
Dirt motorkhana area
$420.00

This is a 3 part story on Damian Read and his mates, to show how you can have fun and it won’t
cost you an arm or a leg. So I hope you will enjoy this over the next three magazine issues.
“What’s the bet that we can’t find a $200 car, buy it, and
race it tomorrow? That’s only $50 each…”
Posted on November 26, 2012
This is the tale of 4 knockabout
blokes, and their spur of the moment
quest to find a car, buy it, prepare it
and race it – all in less than 24 hours.
Our story begins at the Southern Districts Car Club’s Go-Kart night at Kart Mania on Saturday night. After a
thrilling and physically tough race, myself (second from left), Damian Reed (third from left), Mark Williams
(fourth from left) and Patrick Chan (not pictured because his race result sucked) decided to head back to
Patrick’s for a post-race beer or two.
As these things do, conversation soon turned to the following day’s dirt motorkhana at Lanac Park, and it
turned out that none of us were going as no one had a suitable car. And then at about 10pm, a comment was
flippantly made; a casual off the cuff statement that
was the cause of some semi-serious laughter.
“What’s the bet that we can’t find a
$200 car, buy it, and race it
tomorrow? That’s only $50 each…”
Never has this meme been more accurate.
Next minute, everyone had their phones out and was surfing Gumtree. “I’ve found a Pintara at… oh wait, it’s
an auto”. Our criteria was that it must be a manual, it must fit into our budget, it must have at least a day’s
rego and it must be available that night.
Shortlisted cars included a Holden Apollo and a luxury
spec Volvo 740 (an auto, but the leather and sunroof
almost justified it). Damo thought he was onto a winner
when he found a manual VH Commodore. It was $500, but
Damo was confident he could talk the owner down. We had
a good laugh watching the text message conversation with the serial Commodore owner, but unfortunately it
had no rego and the guy couldn’t sell it to us until Monday. Damn.
And then we struck gold, this little
Festiva was exactly what we were
looking for.
We wanted to get the car that night
so we could commence the racing
paint job, but unfortunately that
wasn’t possible. A deal was struck for
$225, and a time made for an 8:30am
collection.
“What’d we buy again?” “Uh… I think we bought the
Festiva. Fingers crossed it’s a two door!”
At just after midnight we all went home on a high, and
none of us slept a wink. I’ve never been so excited about
a Festiva before.
At 8:20am Sunday morning, Patrick, Damo and myself
met at the owner’s house at Fairview Park. We
immediately spotted the Festiva sitting unloved out the front, excitement building when we discovered that we
had, in fact, bought a 2 door!
Patrick and Damo liked what they saw. The battery was
clamped down, the driver’s seat properly mounted and
the seat belt wasn’t frayed. We were in business!
It had evidence of a French racing pedigree…
… and what’s more, it was a Sport model too!
Rack City Bitch!! This being the second Festi that
Damo has co-owned, it was quickly dubbed 2festi.
Only a fool would buy a car without first driving it, so Damo
and Patrick took 2festi for a spin, while I stayed and
chatted to the owner whilst hoping he couldn’t hear the
tyre screeching off in the distance.
We managed to get Jared to knock another $25 off the
price to bring us back within our $200 budget. It was
8:40am, and we were the proud owners of a racecar!
First stop was a car wash to remove the bird poo and
cobwebs. No matter what its value, you can’t start an
event with a dirty car!
They say you always discover things you missed the first
time you wash a car, and we certainly found a few
imperfections on 2festi’s coachwork.
But it soon became apparent that we were onto a
winner. The engine was strong, the gearbox good, the
suspension tight and the handbrake worked
unbelievably well. 2festi even came with rego that runs
deep into January!
Patrick got the job of driving 2festi down to Lanac Park near
Mount Compass. A double thumbs up is an indication of a
good day ahead!
We stopped for fuel…
… giving her a tank of 100 Octane and a bottle of injector cleaner
to really make her sing!

Magazine Advertising
Thanks to the efforts of Dianne Wood we now have a Magazine Editor who wants to provide monthly
magazines for the membership of Southern Districts Car Club.
To follow on from that at the recent General Meeting it was decided that SDCC would pursue
advertising revenue for the magazine and also the club website www//sdcc.asn.au.
From the reports of website use provided by Mick Workman to the General Meetings it is indicated that
we are averaging over 4,000 hits per month and both the facebook and blog are increasing every
month.
So if you know of a business that would be interested in advertising at Southern Districts Car Club
either contact them directly or refer them to any of the committee members.
The general guidelines are listed below
The advertiser must supply the advertisement and SDCC must approve it.
Also I suggest encouraging the advertisers to offer some sort of small discount to club
members.
Although it is a reasonable increase the prices were from a few years ago and I suspect were
set well before that.
If only 300 people read the mag 12 times a year a full page add is less than 4 cents per
hit.
For sale or wanted adds free for club members ?
Magazine advertising charges are as follows:
