This piece of land, between the two rivers, is an area that is not bound to administrative
borders, but it shows as a cultural and agricultural valuable region.
Here it is possible to admire the impressive city of Sabbioneta well known as the “Pearl
of the Reinassance” and also member of the UNESCO World Heritage, as well as other
precious evidences coming from the Gonzagas’ period.
Moreover there are plenty of natural oasis that allow you to get in contact with nature and
with a huge variety of animals. Certain flagship of this region is the typical gastronomy with
its unique local products.
It is a one time opportunity for travellers to get to know an area, which is not only beautiful

BRESCIA-PARMA, which cross at Piadena, connect the whole
region.

AND TYPICAL DELICACIES
The geographical area between the rivers Oglio and Po is for sure one of the special regions where the main protagonist is taste. This region praises a long cooking tradition, rich
in flavours and aromas. It is impossible to explain the typical delicacies and local products;
the only way to understand it is to taste them!
The cooking tradition is based on the local agricultural products, like the famous “Marubini”(stuffed Pasta) in a rich broth which is made out of different kinds of meat, served
with polenta and lentils. Cremona and its province are famous for the “Torrone”. It is said
that at the wedding of Francesco Sforza with Bianca Maria Visconti, which was celebrated
in Cremona in 1441, the royal confectioner served the guests a sweet which was made
out of eggs, almonds and honey and it had the appearance of the famous Torrazzo, the
Cathedral’s bell tower.
Delicious is also the “mostarda” (it was tasted for the first time in 1604) a kind of condiment made out of candied fruit, mustard, sugar and normally it is very spicy.
Instead Mantua is very popular for its Ravioli stuffed with pumpkins and the melon’s
plantation. Last but not least a special cheese called Grana Padano DOP; it is a very high
quality product which require a long period to mature and it is produced only on the left
side of the river Po.
Not only the local products but also the eating places are very characteristic and pretty:
there are typical Trattorias with old tables, plaid tablecloth and special chairs made out of
straw, as well as agritourisms which offer a rustic but neat atmosphere.
In every case along with the local cooking tradition it always comes the good local wine
production, like the Lambrusco.
A good lunch or dinner at one of these places quickens one’s mind. You only have to
choose... delicacies exist enough!

A SWEET AND SALTY TRAVEL
Duration: 2 days/ 1 night
Schedule:
1st Day:
In the morning arrival in Castellucchio and hotel accommodation. Visit of a famous Mantua
salami factory. Transfer to the village center to visit the “Museum of Ancient Arms” with its
rich collection of arms dated back to Italian Renaissance and exotic arms – coming from Latin
America and from the first world war. Stop at the local “School Museum”: a precious collection
of school objects from 1880 till 1990. Lunch in an agritourism with a local tasting menu. Visit to
a local farm, that is specialized in the typical melons’ production in the area of Mantua. Transfer
to San Martino dall’Argine to visit a modern company with an innovative production system for
making sweets, cakes and flans, which has made them famous. Return to Castellucchio and dinner
with local delicacies.
2nd Day:
Transfer to Gazzuolo, a fortified settlement with a castle. In the village you find the baroque
oratorio San Rocco.
Transfer to a little company which produces organic biscuits.
Later going to Belforte to see the Oratory San Pietro. This very old religious place was rebuilt in
the 16th century when the Gonzagas decided to convert it into their pantheon.
In the Oratory there are a lots of frescoes from the Renaissance and plenty of graves with inscriptions and gravestones made of marble belonging to the most important families of this area
(Gonzaga, Luzzara, Pico della Mirandola, Raineri, Falconi...).
Typical lunch.
In the afternoon excursion by bike to the Belforte peat bog. There you can see a wide variety of
birds. Stop in an agriturismo for a snack.

BETWEEN TWO BIG RIVERS
Cross-way between north and south, between east and west – the region held between the
two big rivers Oglio and Po is very rich in history and culture.
The journey towards the hinterland crosses the old Roman street “Via Postumia”, along
which there were found a lot of archaeological evidences (now exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Piadena) and plenty of traces coming from the domination of the
Gonzagas. When you walk through the covered footpaths and the old squares, or look
at the towers and the remains of the defensive walls you can still feel the perfect balance
between the public and religious power at that time.
The same balance and calm is perceptible also in the wide and fertile countryside near
Cremona and Mantua, between old charming farmhouses and other rural buildings.

EXCURSIONS
SABBIONETA AND POMPONESCO
In the morning arrival in Sabbioneta a UNESCO World Heritage.
Sabbioneta is small village, but according to UNESCO it represents a perfect example of
the application of the Renaissance theory to an ideal city. Guided tour and visit of the most
important monuments and buildings in the village: the Palazzo Ducale, the Corridor Grande,
the Teatro all’Antica, the Palazzo Giardino, the pillar of Pallade - Atena, the Church of Incoronata, the Church of Assunta, the Villa Pasquali, the Vigoreto and the Synagogue.
Typical lunch in a local restaurant.
In the early afternoon transfer by bus to Pomponesco and visit of the village.

ISOLA DOVARESE AND OSTIANO
In the morning arrival in Isola Dovarese.
Guided tour through the village, which was very famous especially during the Gonzagas’
domination. The Grande Piazza Gonzaghesca is located on the highest point of the city; by
this way it could be defended by enemies.
In the early afternoon the tour continues towards Ostiano following the Gonzagas’ tracks.
Even if it is small, Ostiano was a very important village, in fact right here the noble family
encouraged the Jewish community to settle down. The cemetery built in the 19th century still
testifies that.

A WAY TO THE ENCHANTING
VILLAGES
In the morning arrival in Castelponzone, which is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
Free visit of the village.
In the early afternoon transfer to Casteldidone to visit the Castle of Mina della Scala. It was
built in the 16th century and it was the summer residence and representative building of the
family Schizzi from Cremona.
The castle is unique because of its combination of living and defensive elements. The current
structure comes from a reconstruction in 1657 and a further restoration in 1735.

1st Day:

Starting with a walk from gate Imperiale to the gate Vittoria to see the impressive city walls which
were built by Vespasiano Gonzaga Colonna UNESCO World Heritage.

Following with a visit of the most important buildings in Sabbioneta: the Palazzo Giardino, the
Teatro Olimpico, the Palazzo Ducale, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta and the Synagogue.

2nd Day:
Transfer to Rivarolo Mantovano a village wanted by Vespasiano Gonzaga, to visit the monumental gates, Piazza Finzi with view on Palazzo Podestà and the characteristic village.
The tour continues to Bozzolo – once the capital of the small princedom – to visit the Church of
San Francesco, the Cappella Palatina and the mausoleum of Giulio Cesare Gonzaga.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL TOUR IN

Schedule:
1st Day:
In the morning arrival in Torricella del Pizzo, accommodation in agritourism.
Visit of the Natural History Museum that stores a collection consisting of mineral fossils and
shell works.
Free lunch.
Visit of the Musical Instruments’ Museum, with works dated back to the time from 1760 – 1930.
The tour continues with the visit of the old town of Torricella with its Church of St. Nicholas.
Nearby there are the “ Lanche di Gerole “, an accessible nature reserve, whose natural paths allow
to watch the local flora and fauna.
Dinner at the agritourism.
2nd Day:
Transfer to San Daniele Po and visit of the Po’s Paleontological Museum. Inside the museum
there are important preserved fossils from the Quaternary period, among which the skull of a
Neanderthal man called “Pàus”.
Free lunch.
Free time to visit the old town of San Daniele Po. Nearby there is the village of Fontana with its
refined Chapel of Saints Pietro and Paolo, which is approximately dated back to the time of the
Carolingians. Then visit of the bridge “Giuseppe Verdi” over the Po in Isola Pescaroli.
Return to Torricella del Pizzo..
Typical dinner.
3rd Day:
Transfer to Piadena for the visit of the City Museum of Archaeology Antiquarium Platina. We
stay in Piadena, stop at the former lake-dwelling “Lagazzi” (Heritage of UNESCO) and stop at
the Church of S. Maria Assunta, self organised lunch.
In the afternoon continuation of the tour in Canneto sull’Oglio with the visit of the documentation center and eco-museum il Centro di documentazione - Ecomuseo delle Valli Oglio Chiese.

Lunch in the agritourism Le Bine and excursion in the WWF natural reserve. In the afternoon
visit of the Toys Museum in Canneto sull’Oglio, a special museum where there are conserved
handmade toys. On the way back to Sabbioneta, stop in Piadena to visit the archaeological city
museum Anqtiquarium Platina. Return to Sabbioneta.
Aperitif in a wine cellar and transfer to Gazzuolo to have dinner.
3rd Day:
Breakfast with tasting of local products. In the afternoon excursion to Casalmaggiore to see the
“Museum of Bijou” with its collection of ornaments and accessories produced by the factories in
Casalmaggiore. Tour to the Museum Diotti with its permanent exhibition of art from the end of
the 2nd millennium and the original house of the famous painter Giuseppe Diotti.
Shopping stop at a traditional dairy store by Quattrocase di Casalmaggiore.

2nd Day:
Excursion to Castelponzone a member of the “Borghi più belli d’Italia” Association in order to
discover the manifacturing’s tecnique of hemp; in fact this village had been the center of strings’
production until the second World War.
Followed by the visit to S. Martino dell’Argine with the ethnographic Museum in memory of the
poet Cesare Ruggeri.
Lunch in a trattoria.
Tour to Castellucchio to see the “Museum of Ancient Arms”: a collection of 125 weapons from
different epochs.
The final stop is at the School Museum where it is exhibited a precious collection of school
objects from the period between 1890 and 1990.

On the way back it is possible to admire the little natural environment “Bodri”, which was generated by the river Po and now it is rich in flora and fauna. Return to Sabbioneta. Dinner.
3rd Day:
Transfer to Villa Pasquali to see the baroque Church San Antonio Abate, which was built between
1765 and 1785.

SPORT AND NATURE
The area of Gal Oglio Po is perfect for doing active tourism. It is surrounded by the rivers
Po and Oglio moreover it is rich in protected natural reserves.
The region offers a lot of well-marked paths going through characteristic villages and
natural oasis, so that taking a walk or going for an excursion by bike will be a pleasure.
It is a great opportunity to get in touch with nature and it is perfect for those who love
birdwatching and fishing.

FROM BLUE TO GREEN
In the morning arrival in Motta Baluffi.
Meeting with the guide and visit of the Po’s Aquarium; the 60 aquarium tanks give a perfect

BETWEEN HISTORY AND NATURE
In the morning arrival in the Parco Oglio Sud which you located between the provinces of
Cremona and Mantua.
Meeting with the guide at the entrance of the WWF Natural Reserve “Le Bine” in Acquanegra sul Chiese. It is a humid area that emerged out when the river Oglio moved it flow. In the
natural reserve it is possible to watch around 600 different animal species.

In the early afternoon transfer to Torre De’ Picenardi, to attend the guided tour to the Castle
San Lorenzo.

EXCURSIONS
FROM NATURE TO BIJOU
In the morning arrival in Casalmaggiore.
Meeting with the guide and start cycling in the direction of “Bosco Santa Maria”. Once
passed the base “Amici del Po”, it starts the long and fascinating “Tunnel degli Olmi” for 2
kilometers long.
Following the towpath along the river Po, get to Isola Maria Luigia and from there turn right
to the farmhouse Bozzetti.
After the farmhouses Colombaia and Gerre go along the main riverbank to Martignana Po.
The tour ends in Santa Maria dell’Argine, shortly outside Casalmaggiore.
In the afternoon guided tour to the Museum of Bijou, specialised in the historical- industrial
heritage of ornaments and accessories’ production in Casalmaggiore, between the end of the
19th century and the 60s of the 20th century.

MARVELS OF THE PO’S FLOODPLAIN
Schedule:
1st Day:
Arrival and accommodation in Torricella del Pizzo, visit of the Natural History Museum Maria
Gardoni - Amilcare Mosconi with its collection consisting in minerals, fossils and shell works.
Transfer to the Natural Reserve Lanca di Gerole first, and then trip to Motta Baluffi to explore
the Aquarium of the Po. Lunch in a typical trattoria. In the afternoon trip to San Daniele Po to
visit the Paleontological Museum of the Po: inside the museum there are important preserved
fossils from the Quaternary period, which were discovered along the bank of the big river. Then
stop at the Natural Monument Bodrio della Cascina Santa Margherita, a park with adjoining oases.

In the morning arrival in Sabbioneta.
Guided tour through the city paying particular attention to the religious places like the Vigoreta (Chapel of the Blessed Virgin), the Villa Pasquali (parish Church), the Church of Incoronata and the Church of Assunta.
In the early afternoon transfer to Fontanella Grazioli in Casalromano to visit the Shrine of
the Blessed Virgin (Beata Vergine della Malongola) with the apse dated back to 1200.
Return.
THE JEWISH PATH
In the morning arrival in Sabbioneta and tour to the old Synagogue and the well-maintained
cemetery.
The tour continues to Pomponesco, in particular to the Jewish cemetery and to the ruins of
the old Synagogue. In the square under the archway there is the monument to Alberto Cantoni, a famous jewish writer and toast of the village.
Transfer to Viadana with a visit of the synagogue there and the cemetery.
Transfer to Rivarolo Mantovano and visit of the pretty village. The tour continues to Bozzolo
and for the free entry to the Jewish cemetery.

Schedule:
1st Day:
In the morning arrival and accommodation in Casalmaggiore. Discovering tour of the Churches of the
city: the impressive cathedral Abaziale di Santo Stefano – neoclassical building from the middle of the
19th century – and the monastery complex of Santa Chiara – founded in 1504 and extended in the 18th
century. Then stop at the neo-Gothic Church of San Francesco. Lunch in a trattoria. In the afternoon
excursion to Borgo di Sotto, a small settlement that was built to house the worker on river Po. The main
buildings of the settlement are the two Churches of San Leonardo and Santa Maria del Popolo.
Dinner in hotel.
2nd Day:
Tour to Sabbioneta with stop at the Church Beata Vergine della Fontana which was built in the second
half of the 15th century. In Sabbioneta the tour involves these buildings: the Church of Incoronata and
the Synagogue, the Church of Carmine and the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. In the afternoon tour to
the former Monastery of Serviti. The Servite Order were based in Sabbioneta for circa 350 years – from
1448 till 1798. Then stop in Vigoreto to see the Shrine Beata Vergine delle Grazie: a Franciscan Church
built in 1554 where a picture of Madonna from the 14th century did a lot of miracles. Followed by a tour
to Villa Pasquali with its parish Church Sant’Antonio Abate. This great baroque opera was built between
1765 and 1785 by the architect Antonio Bibiena.
Dinner in hotel.
3rd Day:
Tour to Gazzuolo. Stop in Belforte to visit the Roman Oratory S. Pietro Apostolo. In Gazzuolo visit of
the village with its interesting archways (from the period of the Gonzagas) 120 meters long and sustained
by 29 pillars made of marble. Before leaving visit of the Church S. Maria Nascente, the oratory San Rocco
and the Church of S. Bartolomeo with a wooden cross from the 15th century. Transfer to San Martino
dall’Argine and visit of the Church S. Maria Annunciata with its original and magnificent arcades plus the
Church Santi Fabiano e Sebastiano (also called: Church of the brothers) from the year 1489.
Free time in the afternoon. Return.
