THANK YOU TO OUR FAMILIES . . . As we enter this new year, we, the Staff at Hearth-­‐‑
stone, offer thanks for our wonderful families repre-­‐‑
sented by the residents who make Hearthstone of Beaverton their home. You are a gracious, generous, and encouraging group of people who readily ex-­‐‑
press your appreciation for the care your loved one receives in the Hearthstone community. Hardly a day goes by that one of you is not saying something kind to one of our staff.
We also thank you for contributing to the Employee Appreciation Fund. It was our joy to distribute these funds to our employees for the diligence and excellence they apply to their jobs. We also thank you for your patience during the week before Christmas when we had to curtail ac-­‐‑
tivities and visits in order to restore everyone to good health. This was a challenging time for all of us, particularly the residents, who had many crea-­‐‑
tive ways to describe their confinement.!!!
Thanks, again, for all you do to make Hearthstone a homey, friendly, and delightful place for your loved one to live. We are honored to serve you.
The River of Generations
I grow so old, my darlings, my limbs are tired and sore.
The rains have drenched my spirit; I’m adventurous no more.
Yet tears and rains can never change my love for those I bore.
Our love has made a river, full-flowing through the years;
As child has grown to parent, and childhood reappears.
Not always freely flowing, the river finds its ways;
A portion of it moves now through unfamiliar bays.
We cannot see the spot where rivers somewhere cease;
Our love belongs within that flow, and thus we know our peace.

SALLY GALLAGHER
We have had the joy and pleasure of having Sally live with us twice—first in 2009 and then when she chose to return in 2012.
Sally was born in Omaha, Ne-­‐‑
braska and as a military wife, she made several moves with her Air Force pilot husband, Larry. She has lived in Salem, San Francisco, Portland, Tacoma and Charleston, South Carolina. Sally and Larry were married in 1939 and enjoyed 51 years of marriage until his passing in 1990. They have two children, Jack and Christy.
During her first stay with us, she and about seven others formed the core of our Wii Bowling Team which competed with facilities much larger than ours and often won!!! Sally also enjoys Bingo and especially musical entertainment. She is often the first in the Dining Room for singing around the piano on Thursday afternoons.
As of late, she has enjoyed greeting guests with a pre y smile as they come in the front door. We’re so glad that Sally calls Hearthstone her home!!

Lemonade and Blessings
So…what does an Activity Director do when she hears, “I’m so bored?“ Recently, with the gas-­‐‑
trointestinal virus on a rampage here at Hearthstone, I was definitely challenged. I feel it is my responsibility to enrich the lives of those who live in our lovely home. With Christmas Season in full swing, I had so many “planned” programs from Boy Scouts singing carols, to a special luncheon at Gus-­‐‑
tav’s for fondue as well as an outing in the dark to see lights. This is generally a very busy week as we count down to the 25th. I went back to the old adage, “When given lemons, make lemonade.“ So, laden with puzzles, magazines, drawing supplies, and books, I made the “rounds.” I was able to visit all the “non-sick” residents personally and that was enjoyable because we could sit, chat, and even share a laugh or two. As you can see from the following pictures, resi-­‐‑
dents found some pleasure in reading, talk-­‐‑
ing on the phone, doing kni ing projects or crocheting. I even had one resident wipe down our song books using gloves and a cleaning agent. TV watching was pre y im-­‐‑
portant and I noticed several residents lis-­‐‑
tening to Christmas music. Some even caught up on cleaning their apartments!
We now know how much we appreciate the diversity of our days. We will appreciate more than ever the joy of friends and com-­‐‑
panions. And we will count our many Blessings.

Theresa Smith moved in on Dec. 9th. She formerly worked for U.S. Bank and has sev-­
en children most of whom live in state. She enjoys Bingo, reading, field trips and popular music of the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. Welcome, Theresa!! Nancy Shaw joined us on the 17th. She has two sons, Brian and David, and was formerly involved with commercial real estate. She enjoyed trips to Central Oregon in the past and currently enjoys read-­
ing, viewing sports, and playing board games.

Maintenance Winn Keys moved in on Dec. 23 with her 6’ Christmas tree in tow! She is blessed with nine children, many who live in the Portland area. (five sons and four daughters). Winn was born in Vancouver B.C. but has lived in Cannon Beach or Portland ever since.
Cliff Moran moved in on the 11th of De-­
cember. He was born in Vale, OR, has lived in Rose-­
burg, Medford, and Ashland and has been a business owner. He ex-­
presses an interest in classical and big band music . . . and football!!!
Marilyn Arnold moved here Dec. 20th from the Ra-­
leigh Hills area. She was born in New York City and has been a homemaker with two children, Dorothy and John. She has enjoyed foreign travel and shopping in the past and now enjoys reading, TV and an occasional movie.
