Danjiri Matsuri Festival at Osaka
Castle
Osaka’s Danjiri gather at the base of Osaka Castle in
an event reviving Osaka’s roots.
Osaka city is said to have a total of about 80 Danjiri; carts
which carry portable shrines and are used in traditional
festivals throughout the city.
Hideyoshi Toyotomi left behind a glorious treasure and
a landmark for Osaka City: Osaka Castle. During the
construction of the castle many ‘Syura’ carts were used. The
design was said to be a prototype for the Danjiri: carts which
carry portable shrines and are used in traditional festivals
throughout the city. The city is said to have about 80 ornately
designed Danjiri in total; The Danjiri Matsuri in Osaka Castle
(lit. Danjiri ‘festival’) currently brings together 20 of these carts
to the base of Osaka Castle where they are said to have their
roots. This year’s celebration marks the 400th anniversary of
Osaka Castle.

Festival of the light in OSAKA
The season when light becomes culture in Osaka
Last year, the Osaka Hikari-Renaissance (an illumination
festival) that began in 2003 saw its 10th anniversary, attracting
3 million visitors to the Nakanoshima area (an island in central
Osaka nestled in between two rivers) and 1.5 million to the
Midosuji area (main boulevard in central Osaka), making it a
signature winter event in Osaka. Starting this year, the event
will be held as the Festival of the Light in Osaka, in which the
illumination programs that have been held in each area will be
unified. This spectacular display brings people from all over
the prefecture together, adding a little bit of bright enjoyment
to the cold winter months.
