Bringing Some Vacation Time Idea's From Our Vacation Time Experiences

It is amazing to think that
just about five hours from the
desert landscape of the Imperial
Valley you can find the majestic
beauty of the Sedona red rock.
Our family, who have recent-
ly been dubbed the "Modern Day
Griswolds," recently spent a
week of vacation in that area,
nestled into a grove of trees
along the Verde River at a campground in Cottonwood.
From that location, we were
able to explore the sights of
Sedona, which was just a short
distance from our campground.
We set off to explore Slide
Rock State Park, and was
amazed at the wonder of how
those natural rock slides were

its size. It seems to make your mind think that it is a painting you are looking at but it is real.
created as the water flowed
through that mountain. With the
water being a frigid temperature,
only our little "daredevil" braved
the slides that day.
The next location we
explored was Red Rock State
Park, in the Crescent Moon area.
There we took a hike through the
trees that run alongside a creek
at the base of some beautiful red
rock mountains. We found more
natural water slides there, to the
delight of our kids. Since the
temperatures of the water were
much better on this day, even
Mom and Dad got in on the sliding adventures. We loved this
place so much, that we made
another trip there towards the
end of the week.
Another great adventure we
experienced was a sunset safari
jeep tour into the wilderness of
Sedona. Our tour guide, Mike,
took us out on primitive jeep
trails along the base of Three
Fingers, Thunder Mountain, and
several other of the beautiful red
rock mountains that edge the
skyline.
This was an entirely different
way to explore the area, getting
up close and persona with several roadrunners, a golden eagle,
and a few other creatures of the
wild. Tour guide Mike had some
great stories to tell along the
way, which made the tour all the
more enjoyable.
No trip to Sedona is complete without taking the twohour drive to Grand Canyon.
What an incredible, majestic
sight that was! While it is a bit
nerve wracking with two small,
active, adventurous children in
the crew, along with our puppy,
we managed to keep everyone
on the right side of the rails and
there were no mishaps. Much to
mom's delight, because she was
quite nervous about the distance
below.
This was a great trip with
some wonderful exploring. We
will never forget the look on the
kids' faces when they got their
first glimpse of the Grand
Canyon. Even the teenager was
impressed. We were able to
make a lot of new memories and
enjoy a wonderful time together.

Holtville Lifeguards Introduced to Holtville City Council

The Holtville Lifeguards
were introduced to the Holtville
City Council at last Monday's
meeting.
The lifeguards that are
employed by the city of
Holtville this summer are:
Ashlyn Hester - 2015 (First
Time Swim Instructor), Kekoa
Gonsalves - 2010 (6th Season),
Luis Briseno - 2012 (4th
Season), Cesar Cano - 2012 (4th
Season), Phillip Gutierrez 2013 (3rd Season), Mallory
Merten - 2014 (2nd Season),
Brice Bolin - 2015 (1st Season),
and Diego Briseno - 2015 (1st
season with Holtville - worked
IVC last year).
Some of the lifeguards got
up and spoke to the council and
explained how much they have
enjoyed working with the kids
of Holtville over the years and
how they have watched them
grow and become expert swimmers. Ashlyn Hester is the swim
instructor for this season and has
seen great improvement in the
swimmers that have attended the
swimming lessons this year.
Kekoa Gonsalves and Philip
Gutierrez could not attend the
Council meeting due to previous
engagements.
This will be the last summer
that Luis Briseno and Cesar
Cano serve as lifeguards, as they
are entering their last year of
college and are looking forward
to graduation. Kekoa is seeking
employment in law enforcement. The others will be finishing high school or beginning
college this school year.

CHS Class of ‘82 Hold
Purse Fundraiser
MEMBERS OF THE Calexico High School Class of 1982 hold up
bags as part of a fundraising effort for the Cancer Resource
Center of the Desert. The bags will be sold at $20 each and the
hope is to raise more than $2000 for the center. Full story on page

Councilman Real Proposes “Forensic Audit” Of City At
Latest Meeting

The Calexico City Council
will look into possibly doing a
forensic audit on some sectors of
city government.
The council discussed once
again the possibility of doing a
forensic audit for the City of
Calexico. Several months ago,
the council went ahead and gave
direction to staff to look at
options to begin a forensic audit
for the city.
A forensic audit is an examination and evaluation of a firm's
or individual's financial information for use as evidence in court.
A forensic audit can be conducted in order to prosecute a party
for fraud, embezzlement or other
financial claims. Calexico resident Esther Gomez told the council to be careful about where they
target their audit because they
could open a can of worms. She
reminded the council could be
spending unnecessary money on
this since the city already audits
its financial and could be duplicating what is already there.
Maribel Padilla agreed that
there should be an audit for
incoming administrators to know
what are they going to absorb but
said that they will spend more
money than what they are trying
to save with the revolving door
they have with City Managers.
Engineer Manuel Yanez
spoke in favor of it, saying that
people deserve transparency on
how the city money is being
used.
"The City Administration
should not fear what a forensic
audit if they have nothing to
hide." Yanez stated.
Councilman Real said that he
would like to see a general audit
of the city and see if there is any
criminal activity in the finance
department.
Council members John
Moreno opposed the forensic
audit and asked to wait until the
budget is approved to see where
they are. There was no backup to
the agenda but Mayor Joong Kim
wanted to make a motion to bring
back to fired law firm
McDogual, Love, Ekis to act as
legal counsel in the forensic audit
at $135 an hour.
City Attorney Mark Austin
said that there is no backup information so the council could not
take action on that. Councilman
Real proposed to table this item
and bring it back to the council
with appropriate backup information.

Imperial County Free
Library Closed Next Week
For Training Purposes
The Imperial County Free
Library (ICFL) system will be
closed to the public from Friday,
July 31, 2015 through to, and
including, Friday August 7, 2015.
They will return to their regularly
scheduled open hours starting
Monday, August 10.
On Friday, July 31 staff will
be receiving training in using the
new online public access catalog.
As a result of the migration to
this new system, the current catalog will be unavailable from the
31st of July until August 10,
2015.
Staff regret any inconvenience this causes and look forward to introducing the new catalog to our patrons. Wi-Fi will
continue to be available during

Community Members Coming Together
To Feed The Hungry in Holtville

"Let's Feed Holtville" is a
new campaign that will begin on
August 3rd in Holtville. Those in
the community who are in need
of a meal will be able to receive
one at no charge. Monday
through Saturday each week
from noon-1:00 at the Turning
Point Life Center Fellowship
Hall (449 Pine Avenue).
Community members, organizations, and churches are volunteering to be a part of meeting
this need. A calendar has been
created, and those who want to
help can sign up for a day(s) to
supply this noontime meal.
There are still a few days
available on the August calendar.
Mondays and Thursdays are covered for each month, but volunteers for other days are needed.
If you are not able to physically
serve, but would like to participate, your donation would be
appreciated and would go
towards the purchase of food.
Also, if you cannot afford to purchase food, but would like to help
serve, your assistance would be
appreciated.

POLICE BRIEFS
LOCK YOU VEHICLE:
An unknown subject broke into
the caller's double cab truck
sometime last night. The subject
then stole a three hundred dollar
tool box along with a few other
items. The caller's vehicle was
left unlocked during the night
and while they were at a party.
The caller was advised of his
options.
TO MUCH PARTY:
A neighbor was having a party
down the road that was getting
out of hand, according to the
caller who states that the music is
too loud and that cars are starting
to double park. Upon arrival,
most of the vehicles that were
parked there had either been
moved or have left. The host of
the party was contacted; the
music was turned down as the
clock struck two am.
VANDALIZED:
An unknown subject had vandalized the caller's minivan. The
minivan was inspected; it was
found that someone had dented
the vehicle with a blunt object.
Though the caller isn't sure when
this happened, this was the first
time he had noticed the damage.
The caller was counseled and
advised of his options.
FEMALE PROBLEMS:
Two female subjects were caught
in a physical skirmish. They
were both separated by friends
who stated that they have been
having some issues lately regarding a certain male subject. The
two female subjects were separated and counseled by the officers, they were advised to avoid
each other at all costs. They complied and went their separate
ways.
DON’T BOTHER YOUR
NEIGHBORS:
The caller's brother is picking a
fight with their neighbor who
isn't aware of his illness. The
caller who tried to bring the
young man inside of the house
was unable due to his size and
strength. An officer was able to
bring the young man inside,
counseling him and advising him
to behave. The neighbor was
filled in on the situation which he
understood and apologized.
ANOTHER BEER RUN:
A subject who was loitering and
smoking in front of the store has
just walked in and ran out with a
six pack. The subject ran down
the block and out of sight, the
caller was advised of his options.
A report was taken of the incident.
THOSE DOGS:
The neighbors' dogs are at it
again, making a mess in the
caller's front yard. The caller
stated that the dogs themselves
outside of the neighbor's backyard only to make a mess out of
the caller's front lawn. The
neighbors were counseled, the
caller was advised to call back
should it happen again.
CAN I HELP YOU?
While the caller passed by and
noticed someone trying to open
the neighbor's front door. The
area was checked, no subjects
were found on the property. The
caller was advised to call back
should they return
SPEEDING:
A subject in a large pickup truck
that was speeding down the
street. The large truck managed
to barely make the stop sign; the
caller was concerned over this
driver's recklessness. The driver
was not found, the caller was
OUT OF TOWN:
The caller's shed was broken into
sometime last night, most likely
while the caller out of town. The
caller found a mess in the morn-
ing as he went to grab some
tools. Upon inspection, it was
found that the lock was kicked in
and that not much was stolen.
The caller was counseled and
GO HOME:
A male subject wearing a white
shirt, green pants and a fisherman's hat was harassing and
causing problems at the bus station. The subject who was bothering customers, being loud and
obnoxious refused to leave the
building. He did leave before an
officer arrived, the caller was
advised to call back should he
return.
MISSING DOG:
A male and female pair walking
thru the alley, the caller thought
they were acting suspicious and
looking for identity theft information. Both subjects were
stopped and questioned by an
officer, it turned out that they
were just looking for a missing
dog that had just escape their
back yard. They did eventually
find the dog, the caller was counseled.
ANOTHER VANDALIZED
VEHICLE:
An unknown subject had vandalized the caller's vehicle. The
caller's vehicle had key marks on
the trunk, the driver's side of the
vehicle and the hood. The caller
stated that he had no idea who
could have done this and that it
was as recent as last night. He
was counseled and advised of his
options.
BURGLARY:
Sometime last night, someone
broke into the caller home and
took approximately two to three
desk top computers from his
home. One of which was located
in the caller's den and the other
belonged to his son. The caller
stated that this may have hap-
pened while they were out of
town. The caller was counseled
and advised of his options.
WORK IT OUT:
A husband and wife couple is
having an intense argument. The
female half was seen throwing
items at the male half during their
loud argument. They were both
stopped and counseled, it turned
out that they were fighting over
some private marital issues. They
were counseled and advised to
work things out in a civil manner,
they complied.
NOISES:
The caller is hearing noises coming from the neighbors place
despite it being vacant for at least
two more days. Upon inspection,
a broken window was found
though there were no signs of
entry; the family was notified of
the incident. The caller was
advised of his options and asked
to call back should anything else
happen.
FAMILY PROBLEMS:
Two male subjects were seen
fighting each other at the caller's
home. An officer arrived but did
not find the subjects instead he
found a father and son pair having a large argument in front of
their respective families. They
were both counseled and advised
to deal with their in a civil manner.
BROTHERLY PROBLEMS:
It was reported that the caller’s
brother is acting up and making a
lot of noise and ruckus, when
contacted, they were just getting
dressed for a family gathering,
the young men were counseled
on the use of the police number,
the two children complied to only
use it in state of emergencies.
LOOKING FOR MY DOG:
It was reported that two males
and one female are looking into
the neighbor’s yard, eyeing it up
and down as if looking for something, the suspicious trio left in
their vehicle and sped off, the
incident was noted.
NO MORE LOVE:
It was reported that the caller’s
ex-boyfriend is at her home and
she does not want him there, she
then explained that she was at the
neighbors, and is afraid of being
hit, the situation was handled.,
she was advised to get a restraining order against her ex.
ANY CANS FOR ME:
It was reported, that there is a
male and female pair walking
thru the alley, the caller thought
they were acting suspicious and
looking for identity theft information, when contacted it turned
out that they were just trash digging, the subjects were asks to
leave the area.
FIGHTING:
It was reported that a fight has
broken out and now everyone
was dispersing, it did not appear
that that the two subjects were
not badly injured, the subjects at
the residence appeared to be
uncooperative.
TO YOUNG TO DATE:
It was reported that there appears
to be an argument between a
mother and her daughter, the two
started to get attention from the
neighbors, they were both counseled, when asked why they
argued, it turned out to be due to
the daughter’s dating status, she
was advised on her options.
UNDER THE INFLUENCE:
It was reported that the caller and
his wife had just gotten into a
fight, the wife has been drinking
after being contacted, she stated
that she would leave to sleep at a
friends home after she fed the
kids.

Framework Provides Vision, Action For Salton Sea Restoration And Renewable Energy Initiative
In taking the next steps to
avert the impending demise of
the Salton Sea, eventual public
health crisis and spur carbonfree energy development for
California,
the
Imperial
Irrigation District Board of
Directors has released a new
framework document that provides a comprehensive vision
and specific actions in support
of its Salton Sea Restoration
and
Renewable
Energy
Initiative.
A joint effort between IID and
Imperial County, the initiative
is a multiphased approach to
Salton Sea restoration – the
first phase being the development of a plan for an incremental restoration approach
that will bridge the gap
between current conditions and
longer-range
Salton
Sea
restoration planning measures.
The 260-page draft document
details short-, medium- and
long-term
implementation
plans (ranging from 2016 to
2024 and beyond) based on
five specific goals: ensuring
water supply reliability for
California, protecting public
health, developing carbon-free
energy, protecting and restoring the sea’s ecosystem and
providing
for
economic
growth.
“IID and Imperial County
believe that we must create and
maintain a smaller but sustainable Salton Sea,” said Bruce
Wilcox, IID environmental and
Salton Sea program manager.
“A reconfigured sea will limit
fugitive dust emissions, preserve and create avian habitat
and expand economic opportu-
nity for one of California’s
most economically distressed
areas.”
The initiative provides a
viable and realistic solution
that can be set into motion in
the current year.
“This solution will help to preserve the Quantification
Settlement Agreement and
related water transfers, which
are critical to Southern
California’s water supply reliability,” said IID board
President Stephen Benson.
“The time for studies has
passed. Now is the time for
real action. We urge the state of
California to join us in implementing the plan proposed in
this framework, and to begin
immediately.”
The framework document
was presented to the IID Board
KAMILL D. BURGESS OMLIN
of Directors during its July 28
meeting. At this point, the initial step is for the state of
California, acting through the
governor’s
task
force
announced in the May budget
revise, to meet with IID and
the county and further develop
the general contours of the proposal, including the next steps
to be taken to move forward
with the implementation strategy. An implementing agreement between the state, IID
and the county would then be
submitted to the State Water
Resources Control Board in
late 2015, enabling the
SWRCB to approve the implementing agreement by the end
of 2015.
The initiative includes construction of additional habitat
in designated areas as funds
become available and construction of an infrastructure
backbone that promotes development of renewable energy in
areas of exposed playa. It also
addresses pupfish habitat
requirements, provides water,
power and access roads for
habitat and promotes air quality mitigation land uses around
the sea.
The final leg of the initiative
includes construction of geothermal development and other
renewable energy projects.
IID is taking comments on
the framework document. A
full version of the document
will be on display at local
libraries and available for
download
at

Kamill D. Burgess Omlin, 60, of Wellton, AZ passed
away on Thursday, July 23, 2015.
Kamill was born on November 27, 1954 in Calexico,
CA. She graduated from Holtville High School in 1972.
Kami retired in 2011 to Wellton, AZ with her husband
Bob after a successful career as an Office Manager in the
Power Construction Industry. They were able to enjoy
the pleasures of traveling and the company of friends and
loved ones. She will always be remembered for her great
sense of humor, strength and love for people. Kami valued more than anything spending time with her family
Nov. 27, 1954 - July 23, 2015 and was always eager to help and care for all.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Burgess; son, Wes Federico (Betsy); daughters, Lisa Elam Federico, (Josh), Shannon Carlson Burgess and Erin Burgess; grandchildren, Tatum Carlson, Evan Federico, Alexis and Justin Elam; parents Joe and
Roberta Omlin; sisters, Cheryl Rhea and family, Kathy Omlin and family, Susan Garcia
and family; brother, Mike Omlin and family.
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 31, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. for the public and at 9
a.m. for family, at the Sunset Vista Funeral Home, Cemetery and Crematory, located at
11357 E. 40th Street in Yuma, AZ. Please respect, private cremation and private

The City of Holtville will be
seeing some more road construction over the next couple of
months. The construction will
be on the east side of Holtville
on 5th Street and Grape Avenue.
The project consists of the
installation of curb, gutter, sidewalk, and curb returns along the
north side of State Route
115/5th Street at the Grape
Avenue
Intersection.
Improvements to the flashing
safety beacon will also be incorporated consisting of replacement of an existing yellow sign
with a lime colored sign for the
purpose of providing safe pedestrian facilities within a common
student route.
The project also accommodates the installation of a bus
shelter at the El Zorro Loco
Easement
location.
The
Holtville City Council passed a
resolution at Monday's meeting
awarding the construction contract to Pyramid Construction
and construction management
contract.to Development Design
& Engineering. The nearly
300K project is being mostly
funded by a grant from Cal
Trans.

The Spectacular View of the Grand Canyon
THE COLORADO RIVER far below is still brown in color from
the recent rains that hit the southwest.
THE DRIVE UP to the Grand Canyon is just flat land as you are on top of a plateau and then you
turn a corner and there it is and all you can say is WOW.
THERE IS PLENTY to see as you travel around the rim of the
canyon, from old buildings to museums.

The Predmore Clan Explores The Ghost Town of Jerome, Arizona

On our first day of our adventure went up to the old ghost
town of Jerome.
Set dramatically on the side
of Mingus Mountain, the town of
Jerome is propped on a thirtydegree mountainside two thousand feet above the Verde Valley.
Fifteen hundred feet separates the
upper-level houses from the lowest. At night the lights of Jerome
twinkle enticingly above the valley after sunsets.
Before the arrival of
Europeans, Indians mined minerals from the hills around Jerome.
The first scouts to search the area
claimed the Sinagua had made a
fair hole in the mountain. They
sought blue azurite for jewelry
and pigments for pottery and
body paint. After they left the
area it simply remained silent,
watching Cottonwood and the
other pioneer towns as they slowly grew. But there is a spirit in
Jerome that will not rest; it simply waited.
Beginning around 1876-the
same year the first pioneers
reached Sedona-miners started to
seriously attack the rich copper
reserves. Eventually a fortune in
copper, as well as gold and silver
was extracted. In fact, the United
Verde would become the richest
privately-owned copper mine in
the world-producing $29 million
worth of ore in one year alone.
Between 1897 and 1899
Jerome caught fire numerous
times. One fire destroyed 24
saloons and 4 Chinese restaurants. But each time the residents
quickly rebuilt, and by 1900 it
was the fifth largest city in
Arizona.
By the 1920's Jerome became
a mining boomtown with a population that peaked at 15,000. The
hills surrounding the town were
overrun with tents and shacks
occupied by countless immigrants: Mexicans, Croatian,
Welsh, etc. At the same time
Sedona was a small farming community with only a few families.
The population also consisted
of a fair amount of Indians
(Yavapai and Tonto Apache) who
had recently returned to the area
after being forcibly removed.

High above the town were the
company houses. On Company
Row prim Victorians housed the
mine's managers and their families. If you were in Arizona during this period, Jerome was the
place to make your fortune.

Holtville Library Summer Reading Program Closes With Pizza Party

The Holtville Library summer
reading program was very well
attended during this summer with
over 100 children from pre-k up
to teenagers.
Each child was asked to keep
logs of the books that they had
red during the program and on
last Thursday the top readers
received prizes along with a pizza
party.
There were 66 readers that
turned in their logs and each of
them received backpacks that
were filled with fun stuff, including passes to LEGOLAND, gift
certificates to McDonald and Del
Taco along with school supplies.
The top readers also received
gift cards for their achievements.
The program was helped to be
the success that is was by all of
the volunteers that came out to
help during the program.
The Library gave special
recognition to all of the Hero
Volunteers at the Pizza Party.

Anger At The Fair Board, Football At All
Levels And The Joys Of Con Foot Pain
WE BEGIN THIS week
with four words about last
month’s Supreme Court decision
on same-sex marriage:
I... TOLD... YOU... SO.
Now, before you get your
blunted pitchforks and solar powered LED torches and send stern
letters to people who might laugh
at you, hear me out.
The only arguments levied
against same-sex marriage have
been: Tradition, the Bible and
“it’s just icky.”
In a time where people are
asserting their own Consitutional
rights to address historical
wrongs, it was going to take
some really clever arguments to
justify refusing the right of samesex couples to get married and
enjoy the same rights that heterosexual couples enjoy.
Those arguments never came,
did they? And they shouldn’t
have, since we in the United
States live under the idea of
“equal protection under the law.”
So, same-sex marriage is now
the law of the land and the country hasn’t been destroyed by the
supernatural. Funny, that, isn’t
it?
BELIEVE IT OR not, there
are people who are upset with the
California Mid-Winter Fair
Board.
Surprisingly, it’s not because
of the rotating tribute acts at the
Grandstand or the sameiness that
happens every year. It’s actually
because of the animal auctions
and the parts of the fair you might
not be aware of.
In short, the Fair Board had
been working with a group called
the
“Junior
Livestock
Foundation.” The JLF consisted
of members of the county’s 4-H,
FFA and Grange groups along
with two members of the Fair
Board and two from the Auction
committee.
Four percent of every animal
sale made at the auction would go
to the JLF for new improvements
to the livestock area at the back
of the Fairgrounds while 2.5%
would go to pay for expenses
related to the auction.
While this arrangement did
help construct some new facilities at the fairgrounds, California
Attorney General Kamala Harris
declared the arrangement illegal
after a consulation with the Fair
Board.
So, the board chose to keep
the money and allocate it themselves in order to be compliant
with the law.
This has led some very angry
people to start a “Take Back The
IV Expo” website and Facebook
group, hoping to flood the state
with applications to the Fair
Board. The group is also
demanding the removal of CEO
Theresa Garcia for a number of
alleged grievances.
It seriously has the look of a
bunch of children upset at that
their feelings have been mildly
hurt while messing around with
some dangerous weapons.
Maybe, with time, feelings
might get restored and we can all
get on with our lives. Then
again, in this day and age, any
small grievance immediately
escalates towards Armageddon.
We’ll just have to wait and
see...
WITH THE COMING of
August comes “Hell Week,”
when high school football players from all across the country
head to their practice grounds to
get into playing shape.
It feels like a special situation
where you can use a picture of
Jon Snow from “Game of
Thrones,” with the caption
“Brace Yourselves... Football is
Coming.”
(It’s an internet thing. Just
trust me on this.)
Of course, the month-long
“Hell Week” will be followed by
ten weeks of high school football
throughout the Valley
The main question in the
2015 season will be “Who can
compete with Brawley this
year?”
While the Imperial Tigers did
manage a 4-1 record in the IVL,
their poor performance in the preseason and their inability to compete with the Wildcats in their
regular season match doomed
them to a low position in the
playoffs.
Central, Southwest and
Calexico just don’t seem as passionate about putting together a
winning team as they could be.
Palo Verde is a consistent middleto lower end team.
So, it looks like another
championship team for the
Wildcats, barring some major
injuries or some really awful
luck. The major competition for
Brawley’s football team will
come during the preseason.
Speaking of football...
IT LOOKS LIKE the
Chargers are leaving San Diego
by the 2016 football season.
And, if you ask most of the people in San Diego, they’re either
resigned to the situation or
they’re celebrating.
Simply put, the Chargers
want to move to a new stadium
being proposed and fast-tracked
in Carson, California, a suburb of
Los Angeles. By waiting for a
special election in December and
the results of an environmental
impact report, the team risks los-
ing their chance to move.
So, the Chargers are leaving
San Diego by next year for Los
Angeles, to be possibly joined by
the Oakland Raiders and the St.
Louis Rams.
Of course, it’s not that the
people in Los Angeles actually
want a team there, but the NFL
certainly does.
Then again, that’s a column
for another day.
FOR THOSE WONDERING, attending Anime Expo and
the San Diego Comic-Con on
back-to-back weekends was
exhausting, and painful on both
the legs and the wallet.
And... if I could afford to, I’d
do it more often. Truth is, going
to these events is not so much a
once-a-year thing anymore.
Conventions of all sizes are
springing up all over the country,
from small hotel-based cons for
around a thousand to huge events
that rival the biggest ones in
California.
Yes, they are a drain on the
old wallet and a pain in the feet,
ankles and knees, but they’re
more often than not worth the
hassle.
Especially since there’s nothing like them in Imperial County.

PMHD Board Appoints Nick Aguirre As Final Board Member

Directors has announced that
Nickolas P. Aguirre, Jr., recently
retired from his role as Family
Nurse Practitioner with Clinicas

Brawley, has been appointed as
the newest board member for
Pioneers Memorial Healthcare
District. The District approved the
new board appointment following
the vacancy left by the passing of
Leo Haggarty, who served the
District for 31 years.
“Nick brings a wealth of experience and community service to
this role and we are confident that
with his expertise and deep
knowledge of Pioneers he will
quickly make significant contributions to our board,” said Catalina
Alcantra-Santillan, President of
the Pioneers Memorial Healthcare

Tips On Recovering From Exercise Pain
The old saying, "no pain, no
gain," is not without its grains of
truth. Moderate soreness in the muscles may indicate that time spent in
the gym is working, but sharp pains
may be indicative of injury.
Workout soreness that persists
can derail workout plans and may
turn some people off from exercise.
As the body becomes acclimated to
certain exercises, soreness may be
less prevalent, and there are ways for
people to speed up their rates of

Why do muscles get sore?
Muscle soreness can occur a day
or two after exercising. Doctors used
to think it resulted from a buildup of
lactic acid in muscles, but now they
say that it is actually muscle damage
that is taking place. Exercise that
pushes the muscles affects the fibers
in muscle tissue, especially specialized structures that hold the fibers
together. When you exercise, you are
breaking down or tearing muscle,
and the body produces swelling and
soreness as part of the healing
process.
Warm up; cool down
One way to prevent extreme
soreness is to follow proper guidelines before and after a workout.
Stretching and gradually building to
your peak workout can help. This
acclimates the body incrementally to
the workout. Afterward, stretching
and a cool-down period can help
lengthen the muscles once more and
ease any discomfort that might follow.
Consume some post-workout
protein
Before retiring after a tough
workout, consume a light, proteinrich snack. The protein will help the
body repair muscles overnight. Extra
protein at breakfast also can give
muscles the necessary fuel to start
rebuilding.
Choose
anti-inflammatory
foods and beverages
Consuming foods and beverages
that are known to limit swelling may
help your body recover. Such foods
and beverages may include tart cherry juice, leafy greens, whole grains,
fatty fish, and beets.
Know your limits
It's good to push yourself every
so often to improve fitness goals.
However, overdoing it may mean
extreme soreness, or worse, an injury
that is difficult to recover from.
Experts recommend exercising every
other day to give muscles the chance
to heal. If you choose to hit the gym
daily, try to work different muscle
groups each day. If you feel muscles
twitching during workouts, reduce
the weight.

PROPOSAL:
The proposed amendments to the Zoning Ordinance were initiated by
the City in response to the State's adoption of Assembly Bill 2188
(codified at Civil Code § 714 and Government Code § 65850.5),
which requires each city to adopt an ordinance that creates an expedited, streamlined permitting process for small residential rooftop
solar systems. The Planning Commission will consider the proposed
amendments and make a recommendation to City Council on whether
the proposed amendments should be adopted.

ENVIRONMENTAL DOCUMENTATION: The proposed amendments to the Zoning Ordinance are
exempt from the provisions of the California Environmental Quality Act (hereinafter "CEQA") pursuant
to Title 14 California Code of Regulations section 15061, subsection (b)(3), in that the proposed Code
amendments are consistent with California law, specifically Government Code Section 65850.5 and Civil
Code Section 714. It can be seen with certainty that the proposed text amendments will have no significant effect on the environment.
ALL INTERESTED PERSONS are invited to attend this hearing and be heard on this matter, or to submit written comments to the City Administration office prior to the hearing date. Anyone challenging the
nature of the proposed action in Court may be limited to raising only those issues which they or someone
