Trawlermen’s Lives

This documentary follows Ben Fogle, whose previous
challenges include rowing across the Atlantic and crossing
the Arabian desert on foot, taking on one of the UK’s most
dangerous and difficult jobs as he experiences the life of a
North Sea fisherman. The UK fishing industry has been
through the mill in recent years and many fishermen have
quit altogether. Ben’s journey begins in Peterhead in the
north east of Scotland, Britain’s biggest fishing port, as he
spends time on three vessels performing different but
consistently challenging types of fishing. Ben embarks on
his first voyage with skipper Sandy McLeman on the trawler
Rosebloom. For three days and nights, Ben and the crew
go after North Sea haddock and cod. With his shipmates he catches, guts and packs tons of fish,
endures seasickness and finally receives the ultimate accolade of being trusted to take the watch.
The second voyage, which sees him set out on the prawn trawler Pleiades, shows a more troubled
side of life at sea, with torn and empty nets and an incoming storm that brings the trip to a
premature end. Finally, Ben meets a man doing one of the loneliest and most demanding jobs in the
North Sea. Working with John Alexander on board the crab fishing boat Chloe May, Ben baits and
empties baskets of crabs as the waves threaten to swamp the vessel. After an exhausting eighthour shift, Ben and John head back to Fraserburgh harbour to offload their catch, which will be at
Billingsgate market in London within 24 hours.

attitudes to food. The first
episode is entitled Can’t Cook
or Won’t Cook? As a nation,
we are obsessed with cookery
shows, recipe books and
celebrity chefs. Yet it often
seems that we spend more
time looking at food, thinking
about it and talking about it
than actually preparing it for
ourselves. Twenty per cent
of families in this country eat
convenience foods at least
three times a week and it
has been reported that only
one in six cook a meal from
scratch every day. The
excuses people make for
this include lack of time, not
knowing how to cook
through never having been
taught, and cost. Jonathan
asks what can be done to
get the population off the

sofa and back into the kitchen.
The second episode,
Superfoods: Fact or Fiction?,
examines the way in which the
health food industry is
booming. With all the research
being done into the link
between what we put into our
bodies and what we feel, it is
no wonder that there is now a
plethora of food products on
the market which promise to
stave off stress, aid weight
loss and even slow down the
ageing process. Over 60 per
cent of the population admit to
buying such products because
they say they make them feel
better – but do they? Jonathan
sets out to discover if such
claims are fact or fad.

The Zoo

The critically acclaimed documentary series going behind the
scenes at London Zoo in Regent’s Park and its countryside sister
zoo at Whipsnade in Bedfordshire returns for a fourth season. The
new series explores the role of the keepers struggling to breed
critically endangered animals and examines the extraordinary
relationships between keepers and their animals at one of the
oldest and most famous zoos in the world. In this episode, an
Asian elephant gives birth to her second calf at Whipsnade. The
calf takes his first steps guided by mum before meeting the herd for
the first time. In Regent’s Park, keeper Paul Kybett notices that a
15-year-old Asian lioness is not feeding. Vet Tai Strike and her
team are called in to perform an emergency exploratory operation,
but the cause is still a frustrating mystery. After the operation the
lioness appears to be getting better but then takes a turn for the
worse, leaving staff facing one of the most difficult decisions of all.
Keeper Graeme Williamson moves to a new role looking after the chimpanzees. Bonding with one
of the zoo’s most complex and demanding families proves rather testing for Graeme as he attempts
to train them one-on-one. Elsewhere, the zoo’s two pygmy hippos have not been getting along and
their devoted keeper Nicky Blundred resorts to re-introducing them to each other.
The Great War: The People’s Story
One hundred years after the
outbreak of the First World
War, this dramatised

memoirs of the men and
women who were caught up in
a conflict which would change
their lives forever. In episode
two, cockney lad Reg Evans
(Daniel Mays) is shot in the
face in the trenches. He is
among the first soldiers to
undergo pioneering plastic
surgery, a risky operation in a
time before the invention of
antibiotics and when blood
transfusions were highly
dangerous. The programme
continues the story of Alan
Lloyd (Matthew
McNulty), who
swapped life at
home with his
young wife and
baby for the
battlefields of the
Somme. The
programme
explores aspects
of life during the
war on the home

fashionable society cook and
restaurateur Hallie Miles (Alison
Steadman) and women’s
suffrage campaigner Kate Parry

Imperial War Museum and
brought to life by actors.

Come On Down! The Game Show Story
Bradley Walsh presents the second programme in this
new four-part series revealing the definitive history of
the TV game show. Featuring classic archive footage
and interviews with some of the biggest names in
entertainment, the series charts the key moments in
game show history and tells the story behind some of
Britain’s best-loved shows. Self-confessed game show
fanatic Bradley shares his favourite moments as he
embarks on a journey to discover just how the game
show has kept Britain hooked for more than sixty years.
The second instalment takes a look at the cleverer
counterpart of the popular game show, the great British quiz show, in which some of the country’s
most well-educated and big-brained contestants show off their superior knowledge in shows such as
Mastermind and Eggheads. Bradley meets London cabbie Fred Housego, whose 1980 Mastermind
win made him a household name, and sits in the famous Mastermind chair himself as he is
interrogated by presenter John Humphrys. Bradley also looks into the story of the ultimate quiz
show – Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? – and the controversy surrounding its first ever cheating
scandal. Featuring interviews with game show stars past and present, including Ant and Dec, Carol
Vorderman, Sir Terry Wogan, Phillip Schofield, Vernon Kay, Les Dennis, Jim Bowen, Stephen
Mulhern, Ben Shephard and Amanda Byram.

well-known to ITV viewers of This Morning,
present this brand new fun-filled weekday
afternoon quiz show. Three engaged couples on
the brink of matrimony compete to win their
dream wedding gift lists. The main game sees
the three couples face a series of quirky list-
based questions with two pairs being eliminated
until just one couple remain at the end of the
show. Questions can vary from having to identify
the most visited city in the world to the name of
the man who won the Best Actor Oscar in any
given year. Each couple has already chosen a
personalised gift list, picking various items they
want in a certain price range. The first
couple to unwrap their gift list gets to play
for it – and a chance to win a dream
holiday in the final. In the final, the
lovebirds are separated and the first partner
has just five seconds to list as many items
as they can on a particular category. There
are six categories to complete, which can
vary from the highly esoteric to the almost
impossible. The other partner then returns
and must guess exactly what their beloved
was talking about from the clues they are
given. Each correct answer will win them a
gift from their list.

Kids with Cameras: Diary of a
Children’s Ward
Thursday 21st August, 9pm
Martin Clunes narrates the final episode of the threepart series which sees ITV take an unprecedented
step in giving cameras to 100 children who are
patients at Newcastle’s Great North Children’s
Hospital. To have a child in hospital and away from the
love, familiarity and comforts of home is every parent’s
greatest fear, but what is it like for the children
themselves? Keir is 13 and wants to be just like any
lad his age but he has cystic fibrosis, which he
describes as a right pain in the neck. He is in hospital
for two weeks to improve his lung capacity, which has
fallen to 30 per cent of what it should be. He is hoping that time in the gym will enable him to do
without his oxygen mask for a night – and maybe even enjoy a sleepover at his mate’s. Kirk is also
13 and has come in for an operation for a tumour on his left foot which is benign but still causes him
pain. Eight-year-old Cameron is in for corrective surgery on his webbed finger. Afterwards, he is
impressed by the huge bandages encasing his arm – and thoroughly chuffed by the look of his new
hand. Poor Kate is in the emergency department in a neck brace, having been beaten up by a gang
of girls. The 14-year-old has pain in her back as well as her neck and although the x-ray reveals
nothing more serious than a fractured finger, something goes wrong. Kate suffers a series of panic
attacks – more than likely related to the assault – and it is not clear when she can be discharged.
Long Lost Family

Nellie begged Helen to find
their brother and reunite the
family. Ever since, Colin and
Helen have searched in vain.
Stephen Haywood has put his
life on hold until he finds his
birth mother, who gave him up
for adoption in 1963. Stephen
feels unable to celebrate family
occasions without his mother
present - so much so that he
has delayed his own wedding.
In recent years his search has
become more urgent because
of serious health issues.
Stephen believes that when he
is reunited with his mother he
will be able to embrace his life
once more.

Secrets from the Asylum

This new two-part series features Ray Winstone (pictured),
Claire Sweeney, Al Murray, Lesley Joseph, Sue Johnston
and Christopher Biggins, who find out how mental asylums
shaped the lives of their families and uncover some longburied secrets. The lunatic asylum was an inescapable
landmark of Victorian Britain. Situated on the periphery of
towns and cities, there was a deep stigma attached to them
and they inspired fear and shame in equal measure. The
Victorians built 90 asylums and locked away thousands of
people who were classified as either lunatic, imbecilic or
feeble-minded. By the end of the 19th century, these
institutions had become warehouses for the insane, but the last of them only closed in the 1980s. In
the first episode, actress Claire Sweeney discovers how senile dementia and mental health in old
age was treated. Comedian Al Murray follows in the footsteps of his ancestor, the author William
Makepeace Thackeray, to discover the lengths to which he went to save his suicidal wife from the
horrors of the asylum. Actor Ray Winstone visits the formidable Colney Hatch Asylum in North
London as he goes on the trail of his great-great-grandmother Hannah, whose first husband James
died here in the 1870s. Ray discovers that James had threatened to kill Hannah and once inside the
asylum his condition deteriorated quickly. On reading James’s patient notes Ray discovers that he
was increasingly violent, noisy and destructive. James’s mental decline was caused by a condition
called General Paralysis of the Insane (GPI) which was the final and fatal stage of syphilis.
UEFA Champions League *
Tuesday 19th August, 7.30pm
Champions League football returns to ITV, just
over a month after the World Cup Final, as
Adrian Chiles presents live coverage of the first
leg of one of the play-offs. At press time the third
qualifying round has still to be completed, but
teams definitely in the draw are Arsenal from the
Premier League, Bayer Leverkusen from the
Bundesliga, Napoli from Serie A, Athletic Bilbao
from La Liga and FC Porto from the Primeira
Liga. The stakes are high even at this early
stage of the new season. The play-off winners
will earn a place in the group stage of the UEFA
Champions League and compete alongside the
elite teams of European football such as current
champions Real Madrid, Bayern Munich,
Barcelona, Juventus, Inter Milan, Borussia
Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain and Benfica, as
well as the three top Premier League sides –
Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea.
Whoever they are drawn against, Arsenal
will almost certainly have to do without
their German World Cup winners Mesut
Ozil, Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski,
who have been given extra time to recover
after their magnificent exploits in Brazil.
When the group stage gets under way
next month, the biggest change from a
Premier League perspective is the return
of Liverpool, taking the place of
Manchester United, after years in the
Champions League wilderness.

Hell’s Kitchen *
Tuesday 19th August, 9pm
Multi-award-winning British chef Gordon Ramsay
concludes the twelfth series of his US cooking
competition as the remaining handful of chefs gear up
to take on the final gruelling challenge this year. The
Michelin-starred super-chef has put 20 contestants –
all from a catering background - through their paces,
but only one hopeful will emerge victorious with a head
chef position at one of his renowned eateries. As with
last year’s competition, the men (blue team) have gone
up against the women (red team) during each
challenge, with luxurious rewards for the winners and
drudgery and misery for the losers each week. Having
angered Gordon early in the competition with what he described as the worst dinner service in the
show’s history, the final four chefs are running out of time to impress the fiery Scot as the
competition thunders towards the finale. In the first of this week’s shows, the chefs are reunited with
their loved ones before taking part in a “taste it, make it” challenge, using taste, texture and
appearance alone to make a dish in 40 minutes. A tough dinner service follows which sees two of
the hopefuls sent home, leaving just two chefs to battle it out for the final prize. For the series finale,
the two remaining contestants choose a kitchen team made up of their former rivals. Who will best
organise their former teammates and lead themselves to victory this year?
Through the Keyhole
ITV2 offers another chance to see off-the-wall
comedy character Keith Lemon in his element as
he presents the fifth episode of the recently
revived classic game show. Through the
Keyhole was first made famous as a breakfast
television feature over thirty years ago by David
Frost and Loyd Grossman, becoming a full show
in its own right in 1987. The overall concept
remains the same in this 21st century series, as
mischievous Yorkshireman Keith probes the
homes of the rich and famous and describes
what he sees to a panel of three celebrity
guests. With the help of the studio
audience, the panellists must use their
powers of deduction and observation to
guess the famous owner of each residence
as Keith is let loose amongst their most
treasured possessions. Breakfast DJ and
TV presenter Dave Berry is the show’s
panellist-in-residence, casting his eye over
the style and taste of the famous subjects
each week. Joining him in this episode are
Spice Girl Emma Bunton and former
EastEnders actor Larry Lamb. Will this
bunch of star guests prove adept at
identifying their fellow celebrities based
entirely on Keith’s snooping?

Like Father, Like Son *
Monday 18th and Tuesday 19th August, 10pm
Jemma Redgrave, Robson Green, Phil Davis
and Tara Fitzgerald star in this two-part
thriller. Dee Stanton (Redgrave) knows more
about serial killers than the average mother
because her husband Paul (Davis) was jailed
eleven years earlier for the brutal murders of
four teenage girls. Dee was hounded from her
home but has kept her secret from everyone,
including her 15-year-old son Jamie
(Somerset Prew) and her new boyfriend,
schoolteacher Dominic Milne (Green). But her
happiness is threatened when Jamie begins to
exhibit unusual symptoms. Is this normal
teenage behaviour or has he inherited his
father’s murderous tendencies? After being
accused of stalking, Jamie discovers the truth
about his father’s true identity. He demands to
meet Paul and there is an immediate bond
between the pair.
Soon afterwards, Morag, a girl from Jamie’s
school, is found strangled. Dee turns to Dominic
The Motorbike Show *
Monday 18th August, 9pm
for support – but the teacher finds himself under
suspicion of murder. As Dominic fights to keep
his job, Dee fears that Jamie is falling under the
spell of his father. A horrified Dee finds that
Jamie has a new tattoo, just like his father’s. He
claims that he was having it done at the time
Morag was killed. Can Dee find the truth in the
midst of tragedy?
The Motorbike Show continues on ITV4 with regular presenter
Henry Cole. The show covers all aspects of motorcycling,
from professional riding such as TT and Superbikes to items
for the general enthusiast who rides for pleasure. It includes
news about the many motorcycling events that take place
across the country, items on restoring classic models, and
interviews with sporting two-wheel stars as well as celebrity
biking enthusiasts. Regulars to the show include bike restorer
Pete, and the great BSB rider Chris Walker. The show follow
Pete’s progress in his workshop renovating some classic
models, which in the last series included a beautiful old
Triumph Bonneville. At the end of the last series, Henry came
a cropper after breaking his shoulder taking part in a
motocross race. He has happily made a full recovery for this
new series, and in this week’s programme he learns the tricks
of the trade of the Metropolitan Police’s Special Escort
Group, goes to Brooklands to try his hand as a special
correspondent for Classic Bike Magazine, finds out what is
new at this year’s BikeShed and continues his quest to
prepare for a new speed record.

Saturday 16th August, 9pm
ITV Encore are showing Poster Child, another episode
from series three of the detective series based on the
novels by crime writer Ann Cleeves. DI Vera Stanhope
(Brenda Blethyn) is obsessive about her work and driven
by her own demons. Her most trusted and long-suffering
colleague is DS Joe Ashworth (David Leon), her right-hand
man and surrogate son. On the eve of his retirement,
respected surgeon Dan Marsden is shot dead and his
daughters Karen and Mira are abducted. His widow Laura
(Saskia Reeves) tells Vera that Mira is an orphan from the
Iraq war on whom Dan operated before the couple adopted
her. A dramatic and widely distributed image of the girl was taken by war photographer Jonah
Regan (Dean Andrews). When Vera visits Regan, she discovers that he too tried to adopt Mira but
failed, due to a history of unstable behaviour which resulted in his wife leaving him. In the search for
the girls, new recruit DC Barry Kelman (Gareth Farr) traces a link to Malik Saleh (Amir Boutros) an
illegal immigrant who has recently been smuggled into the country. Karen is located and freed but
Barry is killed in the process and Laura is wounded by the kidnapper when he returns to the family’s
home for Mira's medication – she is diabetic. It becomes clear that the kidnapper is known to Mira
and she has gone with him willingly. Vera and Joe must now stop them leaving the country.
Nerds and Monsters *

This animated comedy series
features three nerdy kids –
Dudley Squat, Betty Hooger
and Irwin Chang-Stein - and a
dumb football linebacker, Stan
Grissle, who are marooned on
a strange uncharted island. The
castaways have to be smart if
they are to resist the relentless
attacks by the island’s
inhabitants, a tribe of hideous
monsters who mistakenly
believe that they are threatened
by these new human invaders.
Luckily for the nerds, the
monsters are not really that
smart at all! Dudley may be
short, but he is the intellectual
giant of the group – and
extremely bossy! Betty is
hypersensitive, overdramatic
and totally uncoordinated. Irwin
is frightened of absolutely
everything except Betty, on
whom he has a giant crush.
Stan is big, loyal, neckless
and breathes through his
mouth. Now away from his
team he realises that he is
no longer the big strong
jock but depends on the
Nerds for survival. The
Monsters’ supreme leader
Zarg sees it as his job to

get rid of the Nerds. Skur is an
arrogant flying lizard who is fed
up with playing second fiddle to
Zarg and sees the arrival of the
Nerds as his chance to gain
power. Urp and Durn are
husband-and-wife monsters
who are constantly bickering,
which is not surprising since
they share the same body!
Vink, Maiden Cheena and Lyle
complete the line-up. Fourteen
episodes will be showing this
week, including Stan By Me, in
which Skur decides that he
needs a Nerd to come up with
a brilliant plan but unfortunately
captures Stan! In Maiden

SOAP ROUND-UP

Emmerdale
Ross is shocked over Donna’s death and further heartbroken by news of her illness. He gives April
the money which Donna intended for her, but Marlon is livid and demands answers, leaving Ross
no choice but to come clean about Donna’s dodgy dealings. Ross blames Aaron for the job going
wrong and considers turning him in to the police, but Cain manages
to convince him not to go through with it, reminding him that he
faces prison if the police learn the truth. Marlon faces the difficult
task of explaining to April that her mum is gone forever, telling her
that Donna is now a superhero in the sky. He struggles with the
knowledge that Donna was involved in criminal activities, as well as
her secret relationship with Ross. Marlon and Laurel cover for
Donna and Ross when the police come knocking. Their panic over
the money prompts them to burn it, unaware that April is watching.
Upset, April asks Ross to take her to Donna, but he snaps at her and she goes missing. Cain is
furious when he finds out about Aaron and Adam’s involvement in Ross and Donna’s failed job.
Aaron suggests that he and Adam run away to France, but as Cain makes plans to help them
escape, the police find evidence of Aaron’s involvement. Chas lies to the police, telling them that
she has cut Aaron out of her life in a desperate bid to put them off his trail. She decides that the
only way forward is to hand Adam over to the authorities, but Aaron stops her. Donna’s death hits
Bob hard. Vanessa faces embarrassment when she unwittingly hooks up with Rakesh’s 17-year-old
son. Charity learns of Megan’s plot against her. Finn despairs over his family situation.
Coronation Street
Peter ruins his chances with Simon and Leanne when they come to visit him in prison and realise
that he has been drinking. Seeing that Peter is desperate for more booze, Jim manipulates him into
persuading Steve to come and visit him. Ken considers reporting Peter’s drinking to the prison but
Tracy reminds him that it will not look good for his case. Neil
returns to try and win Andrea back, telling her that he has passed
up a job for her. When Lloyd sends him packing, Neil responds
with a nuisance campaign, bombarding Andrea with texts and
ordering pizzas to be delivered to the cab office. Steve and Lloyd
retaliate with further pranks. Deirdre and Ken head to Wales for
their camping trip, but Deirdre is underwhelmed by their
surroundings. Leanne starts a new job at the kebab shop. She rails
at Nick for faking seizures, but Eva and Kal are unsupportive,
believing Nick’s lies. Following a showdown at the bistro, Leanne and Nick finally manage to have a
civilised discussion about their future. Kal’s son Zeedan disapproves of his father’s relationship with
Leanne. Sophie suggests that Maddie needs another job and asks Carla about a packing job at the
factory. Maddie soon incurs Carla’s wrath when she borrows her car to take Eccles to the vet’s.
