History of the European Society of
Cardiology
• ESC was founded in 1949 (January 29th) in Brussels by
representatives from 14 National Societies (Belgium,
Denmark, Finland, France, Greece,
Italy,Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain,
Sweden, United Kingdom, Yugoslavia)
• They drew up provisional statutes and appointed a
Board :
• Ch Laubry (Paris) Honorary President,
• Gustav Nylin (Sweden) President,
• Roger van Dooren (Brussels), Secretary
• First general Assembly: September 6, 1950
• Decision to have a Congress every four years organized
by the local National Society

unanimously (1 abstention, 2 against) decided to organize
the European Congress on a yearly basis starting in 1988
in Vienna

ESC and ECCO: Adventure or Venture?
• April 17, 1986: The Board appointed for 2 years:
• Mr Wil Neijmann (Congress organisation and exhibition)
• Mr Kurt Hadener ( AKM Company, Basel): registration
• April 5 1987 ECCO was registered in Lausanne
• Several pharmaceutical companies manifested a great
interest in ECCO and participated actively in its
creation as Founding Fathers and Major Sponsors
• An office of 250 m² was rented for 3 years in Nyon
(Switzerland)
• Staff included 6 persons
• Limited facilities: no Fax, No Scanner,
• No Internet, No E-mail…

1989-1990
• The Congresses in Nice (1989) and Stockholm (1990)
were very successful with growing number of
attendees
• Headquarters in Switzerland became too small: The
Board was notified of the urgency to moving to larger
premises: 2 possibilities
• To continue In Switzerland : very high prices
• In addition it was not possible to recover the VAT if the ESC was
located in Switzerland: significant loss of money

ESC 1990-1992
• Pr Attilio Reale (I) became President on September 1990
in Stockholm: He announced at the GA to the delegates
that he intended to create a European Heart House
• January 1991: Untimely death of Pr Attilio Reale
• February 1991, Michel Bertrand (President-Elect 19921994)
took over earlier as acting President and made his term
of office (1992-1994): almost 4 years
• Acting President and the Board stated that they were
committed to achieve the project initially launched by
Attillio Reale

Why an European Heart House?
• To accommodate the offices of the ESC and ECCO
• To be an educational centre and a meeting place for
the constituent bodies
• To become the hub of a computer network collecting
data from multicentre studies, registries,
epidemiology in Europe
• Criteria
• The building should not be established in a capital
• It should not be located on the campus of a University
or private company
• It should be close to a big airport in an area with
technological communication facilities
• And eventually, pleasant surroundings ….

The choice for a venue in Europe
• First proposals
• Amsterdam, Barcelona
• In Germany, Frankfurt, Munich, Dusseldorf, Bonn
• In France: Strasbourg, Nice, Sophia Antipolis
• Sophia Antipolis
A technopole created in 1970
Midway between Cannes and Nice
Close to a big airport (N° 2 in France)
1,400 worldwide companies mainly interested in sciences,
technologies of communication and computers
• On May 4th,1991, in Prague, the Board decided to implant
EHH in Sophia Antipolis
