Jesus Gets His Power From God Matthew 12:22-29 LIVING INSIDE OUT OPPOSING OPINIONS People brought a man, stricken blind and deaf from demon possession, to Jesus. Jesus healed the man, restoring his hearing and sight. This miracle, a display of undeniable divine power, amazed the crowds—but annoyed the Pharisees. The crowds talked about the possibility of a long-awaited Messiah; the Pharisees muttered about Jesus’ demonic influence. Leader Insights Leader Insights help leaders grow spiritually as well! 14 6 FAULTY LOGIC The Pharisees looked for any opportunity to discredit Jesus. They didn’t deny Jesus’ power—but they did question its source. If they could associate Jesus with the devil, pointing to demonic influence as the source of his power, maybe these crowds would stop their Messiah chatter. “No wonder he can cast out demons,” they grumbled. “He gets his power from Satan, the prince of demons.” In the end, though, the Pharisees didn’t think through their argument very well. SHOOTING HOLES Jesus heard their thoughts, an amazing thing in and of itself—and then he proceeded to shred the Pharisees’ argument by turning their logic against them. Jesus pointed out two significant holes in their accusation. First, what sense would it make if demons cast out themselves? Any kingdom divided, including one of darkness, is doomed. The devil would be, in essence, casting out himself and thwarting his own purpose. Secondly, Jesus pointed out that the Pharisees had their own exorcists on payroll, routinely casting out demons, and that they would take issue with this accusation. Were their powers from the devil as well? The same power Jesus wielded to cast out demons still exists today. Matthew 12:29 says, “For who is powerful enough to enter the house of a strong man like Satan and plunder his goods? Only someone even stronger—someone who could tie him up and then plunder his house.” That someone is Jesus, and he’s stronger than anything you’re facing. This week if you feel overwhelmed, if you have asked but have been deaf to clear direction, if you’re blind to a solution to your problem, Jesus’ power is available. Never mind the pharisaical naysayers—just pray! DIFFERING INTERPRETATIONS There will always be people who cling to unbelief despite evidence. The Pharisees were determined to not believe that Jesus’ power was from God—but they couldn’t deny the miracle before them. So naturally, they attributed this powerful exhibition to the only other supernatural choice— the devil. People will choose to see what they want to see; a miracle could be interpreted as a blessing or a curse, depending on the perspective of the person witnessing it. A once blind and deaf man now seeing and hearing the world around him spurred the crowds to talk about God and at the same time drove the Pharisees to accuse Jesus of working for Satan. Bible • TV or VPU • DVD player • Large-Group DVD • 1 sheet of paper per child Follow the Fold BEGIN Give each child a piece of paper, and say: Jesus did miraculous things. There were people who saw Jesus and believed that he was the Son of God—but there were other people who thought something else. Have kids fold their papers in half. Craft • Lesson 2 READ Read Matthew 12:22-24. Have kids fold their papers in half again. Then say: People were divided. The crowd thought Jesus got his power from God; the Pharisees thought he got his power from Satan. Read Matthew 12:25. Have kids fold their papers in half again. Anything split in half by fighting with itself can’t survive. Read Matthew 12:26. Have kids fold their papers in half again. Satan fighting with Satan, divided against himself. That doesn’t make sense! Read Matthew 12:27. Have kids fold their papers in half again. Jesus made the point that the Pharisees had their own people who cast out demons, too. So were the Pharisees saying their own exorcists got their power from Satan, too? That doesn’t make sense. Read Matthew 12:28. Have kids fold their papers in half again. Jesus was saying that his power came from God. FINAL FOLD Have kids fold their papers in half one more time; then read Matthew 12:29. Say: Who can walk into Satan’s house, tie him up, and take stuff back that he stole? Only someone stronger than Satan—someone like Jesus. Have kids try to fold their papers again. They won’t be able to do it! Follow the Fold Questions DISCUSS IN GROUPS DVD Cue screens as kids answer each of the following: • Why did folding the paper get harder and harder? • What did Jesus say about his power in this passage? • What are some things that are hard to do without Jesus’ power? MAKE THE CONNECTION Say: Jesus showed the Pharisees that his power did come from God. The last thing he said was that only someone stronger than Satan could tie Satan up. And because Jesus had more power than Satan, Jesus could heal the demon-possessed man. Because of that, u we know Jesus is stronger than anything. 16 8 Living Inside Out Permission to photocopy this page from Group’s Living Inside Out®: Level Up granted for local church use. RETURN TO INTRO PAGE Group’s Living Inside Out® | Large Group sample lesson Allow 10 minutes Game TV or VPU • DVD player • Large-Group DVD • one 6’ length of yarn per small group • Level Up glow ball (provided in kit) • glow flying loop (provided in kit) • foam bowl • table Next Level Challenge SET IT UP Say: We have a challenge before us today. The ball in the bowl needs to get to the next level, up on the table. Have groups each choose one person to represent their group, and hand out yarn to those representatives. You must figure out how to get the ball to the next level by only holding the yarn. Explain that kids can’t touch the bowl, the ball, or the loop, and that everyone holding yarn must be involved in some way. EXPERIMENT Allow kids a few minutes to think and experiment, encouraging them to ask their groups for ideas. If they come to the solution on their own, skip to Step 3. If not, say: You can’t touch the ball, the bowl, or the loop. But your yarn can! In what ways can you use your yarn to lift the loop? Step out of the way, and let kids try to get the ball onto the table until they succeed. If needed, offer other hints, without giving kids the answer. Leader Tip Prepare Ahead Cut the 6-foot lengths of yarn, one per small group, and set them aside, ready to be handed out. Place the glow flying loop flat on the ground next to the table, place the foam bowl on top of the loop, and put the Level Up glow ball in the bowl. Game • Lesson 2 YOU’LL NEED Solution: One end of each piece of yarn must be tied onto the glow flying loop. Then, all kids pulling at the same time outward in all directions, they can carefully lift the loop, bowl, and ball onto the table. CELEBRATE When the kids are successful, say: Fantastic! I knew you’d figure it out! Lead the group in a big cheer. Next Level Challenge Questions DISCUSS IN GROUPS DVD Cue screens as kids answer each of the following: • What did you have to do to get the ball to the next level? • If your efforts are divided or split, how does that affect whether you’re successful? • What would happen if Jesus was fighting against God? MAKE THE CONNECTION Say: Things that are fighting against themselves can’t work. Just as you worked together to get the ball to the next level, Jesus works together with God—they aren’t divided against each other. If they were, Jesus wouldn’t have been able to do the things on earth that he did. Together, Jesus and God make the perfect team, so u we know Jesus is stronger than anything! Place the two flying gizmos on the floor in the middle of the room. Say: Your linked groups are without power. To get a charge, you have to attach to a power source. Point to the glow flying disc and loop. Once you’re connected and powered up, you must complete four tasks—but you have to stay connected to the power source the whole time. You can’t let go, or you’ll lose power! Explain that each “power source” can handle multiple groups—so get as many groups attached as possible. Physical Challenge • Lesson 2 PLAY Say: Be careful of the people around you, and stay powered up as you do these tasks. Have groups grab onto one of the discs, and then read the tasks aloud, in order. 1. Spin completely around in a circle in one direction. 2. Walk all the way around the room, and have one person from each line touching each wall. 3. Everyone at the same time sit down and stand back up. 4. Deliver the flying disc or loop to a leader. Stay Connected Questions DISCUSS IN GROUPS DVD Cue screens as kids answer each of the following: • How easy or difficult was it to stay connected to the power source? • How can connecting to Jesus power you up? • What helps you stay connected to Jesus? MAKE THE CONNECTION Say: u We know Jesus is stronger than anything, which means that Jesus has a lot of strength and power. Just as staying connected or “plugged in” gives things power, staying connected or “plugged in” to Jesus gives us power. When we’re weak or powerless, connecting to him gives us a charge! 18 10 Leader Tip Each disc should be able to have at least 7-10 small groups attached to it. If you have more groups than can fit, take turns until all groups have had a chance to play. Allow time. Group Activity Paper or Plastic? YOU’LL NEED rock • paper • wood or metal spoon • plastic spoon • yarn or shoelace • thread 1. SET UP Sit in a circle with the children. Say: We know Jesus is stronger than anything. Our fears and the bad things in this world just aren’t made of the same stuff that Jesus is. Let’s look at some strong things to help us see how strong Jesus is. Allow 10 minutes 2. COMPARE Pass around the rock and a sheet of cumpled-up paper. As each child receives the two objects, ask: Which one is stronger? Let each child answer before passing the objects. Direct the last child to set the two objects in the middle of the circle, as the start of a “weak” pile and a “strong” pile. Repeat with the two spoons and with the yarn/shoelace and thread. All the strong items should end up in one pile and the weak items in another. Small-Group Pow! Preschool, Lower Elementary, and Upper Elementary engage in group challenges that build relationships and reinforce the Bible story experienced in Large Group. 3. DISCUSS • In what ways were the strong things stronger than the weak things? • Name all the things that Jesus is stronger than. • How do you need Jesus to help you be strong this week? 4. MAKE THE CONNECTION Pass out the weak objects. Say: In the Bible, Jesus healed a man who had evil things inside of him. Jesus was even stronger than things that seemed really powerful. Jesus is like the strong objects we passed around. Things that could hurt us are like the weak objects. We know Jesus is stronger than anything. Say: We learned Jesus is so strong because he gets his power from God. He can beat anything! Tell your partner the strongest thing you can think of. Then tell why Jesus is stronger than even that thing. Allow time. Group Activity Brick Bowling YOU’LL NEED 10 index cards 1. BOWL Say: The next level of Level Up is Brick Bowling. You’ll each get a chance to knock down the bricks; the catch is you can only blow on them to knock them over. Give each child a chance to blow on the index cards and knock them down with only one breath. Allow kids to experiment by setting cards in different patterns before trying to blow them down. 2. DISCUSS • What were the easiest and most difficult patterns to blow over? • Name some problems people might like to have blown right out of their lives, like the index cards were blown over. Allow 10 minutes Leader Tip Prepare Ahead Fold the index cards in half the long way, and then stand them up like bowling pins in a triangle. 3. Group’s Mission The fact that our curriculum works is not a fluke. We call it our R.E.A.L. philosophy: We equip churches to help children, youth, and adults grow in their relationship with Jesus. w Relational—Kids become friends as they learn. Statement of Faith w E xperiential—They do more than listen or read— they experience the lesson. We believe the Bible is the inspired, authoritative Word of God. We believe there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We believe in the deity of Jesus Christ, in his virgin birth, in his sinless life, in his death on the cross, in his bodily resurrection, in his ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in his personal return. We believe people receive forgiveness of sins and eternal life through Jesus. w A pplicable—Children learn to become doers of the Word. w L earner-based—They draw closer to Jesus in their own unique way. 28 RETURN TO INTRO PAGE
