Joe Simunovich delivers a unique combination of corporate,
government and entrepreneurial experience with extensive
expertise in sales, marketing, public relations and corporate
communications. He currently serves as a member of the Board
of Directors for United Water, a subsidiary of Paris based Suez
Environnement, and as Vice Chairman-Board of Directors,
United Water New Jersey-New York. Mr. Simunovich previously
served as President and Chief of Staff of United Water
Management and Services, a company that provides executive
oversight and support to all of United Water’s regulated and
non-regulated companies throughout the United States. Prior to
that, he held positions as Senior Vice President and Vice
President with United Water.
During Mr. Simunovich’s tenure United Water grew from a water
utility serving 1 million people in two states to a national leader
in the environmental services industry serving more than
7 million people in 25 states nation-wide. Under his leadership,
United Waterhas initiated innovative, award-winning customer conservation programs and
committed to environmental excellence through water reuse and energy from waste recycling
programs in a number of company operations.
Before joining United Water New Jersey in August 1992, Mr. Simunovich was Director of Sales
for the former Bell Atlantic New Jersey, now Verizon. He joined Bell in 1978 as Marketing
Manager-major accounts. In 1983 he was named Regional Staff Manager-planning and controls
and, in 1985, Director of Sales-large business, government and education markets. Mr.
Simunovich began his career with New York Telephone in 1962. In addition to his position at
Bell, from 1985 to 1992 Mr. Simunovich was a founding member and served as President of JII
Consulting Group, a governmental and public relations firm.
Government Leadership
In March of 2002 Mr. Simunovich was appointed a Commissioner of the New Jersey Turnpike
Authority by Governor McGreevey. Two months later the Governor selected Mr. Simunovich to
be Chairman of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority. He continued to provide leadership for both
of New Jersey’s major highways under Acting Governor Codey and Governor Corzine, serving
the state through May 2007.

During his leadership of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, Mr. Simunovich directed the historic
consolidation of the Garden State Parkway with the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, providing
nearly $200 million in savings to New Jersey residents. He also oversaw the removal of toll
booths on the Parkway to speed traffic flow, $400 million in capital improvements to the Driscoll
Bridge on the Parkway, and the resolution of financial and operational issues associated with the
implementation of EZ Pass, as well as the high speed EZ Pass system currently in use on New
Jersey highways.
Active in governmental and civic associations, Mr. Simunovich was appointed by Governor
Kean in 1986 as a member of the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (EDA). He was
reappointed as Vice Chairman of the EDA by Governors Florio and Whitman for six consecutive
terms, the longest tenure in the organization’s history. Mr. Simunovich also completed a oneyear assignment as a loaned executive to the Governor's Management Review Commission.
Mr. Simunovich was a Hudson County Freeholder for 12 years, three of them as
Director/Chairman of the Board. He was Chairman of the Bergen County Economic
Development Corporation from 1997-2002. He was also a member of the Board of Directors for
New Brunswick Development Corporation, the National Association of Water Companies and the
National Council for Public-Private Partnerships. Mr. Simunovich served as a member of the
Leadership Committee of the Bergen County Workforce Investment Board from 1996 to 1999.
Community Commitment
Mr. Simunovich currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Hackensack
University Medical Center Foundation. He is also Vice Chairman for the Board of Trustees of
Hillcrest Health Service, the parent company of Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC).
He is also the chairman of HUMC’s Pascack Valley Hospital Oversight Committee, bringing high
quality medical care to nearly 200,000 residents in northeast Bergen County.
Mr. Simunovich served as Chairman of the Board of Governors for Hackensack University
Medical Center from 2004 through 2007. During Mr. Simunovich’s tenure Hackensack Hospital
has grown into Hackensack University Medical Center, a nonprofit, teaching and research
hospital that is the largest provider of inpatient and outpatient services in New Jersey and rated
by US News and World Report as one of the top 50 hospitals in the United States.
Mr. Simunovich received his Bachelor’s Degree from Colgate University and attended Fairleigh
Dickinson University Graduate School for a Masters Degree in Business Management. He has
also completed post-graduate coursework at Carnegie Institute and guest lectured at Rutgers
University School of Business. Mr. Simunovich also served as a trustee and officer of the board
of New Jersey City University from 1991 to 1999.
A resident of Bergen County, Mr. Simunovich is married and has two children and four
grandchildren.
