aris, New York, Milan, Los Angeles, Moscow, Sao
Paulo, Dubai, Beijing… Travelling from one city to
another, Tony Ward and his team spent a restless year
presenting the collections to couture connoisseurs
and fashion devotees around the world.
Fashion capitals, iconic places, red carpets, instagram feeds…
fashion glamour has no boundaries. An avant-premiere in New
York, a fashion show in Paris, a photoshoot session in Sao
Paulo, an award show in Los Angeles, make of this issue an
invitation to travel in fast forward mode!
Pushing back the boundaries of fashion, FORWARD will
introduce you to ongoing collaborations between Tony Ward
and luxury, beauty and design houses that share the same
values. Coco Chanel’s quote has never been more valid:
“Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion
is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way
we live, what is happening.”
This new issue of FORWARD will take you on a style journey,
from discovering behind the scene secrets to travelling at the
frenetic rhythm of collection launchings.

excellence is key to the success of the countless collections

The Fashion
House
Fashion Shows in Paris and Moscow, presentations in New York and Milan, events in Beirut, Dubai and Sao Paulo, red carpets in
Los Angeles and Singapore… this is the journey of the Tony Ward dresses. And it doesn't stop here.
Beirut is where all the magic is initiated. Exceptional fabrics come from Italy, France and Switzerland before the tailors,
petites mains, and embroiderers, trained by Tony and Elie Ward, frantically transform them into beautiful garments. With more
than 60 years of experience in couture, the team’s professionalism, know-how and talent are the essential elements which
make for these dresses extraordinary craftsmanship.
Paris is the city where Tony Ward studied, at the Chambre Syndicale de la couture Parisienne; it is where he learned, for
eight years, the secrets of couture from the best Masters there was. He started working at Lanvin with Claude Montana, then
at Dior with Gianfranco Ferré and at Chloé with Karl Lagerfeld. Seventeen years later, he returned to Paris for his first fashion
show in the capital at Hotel Salomon de Rothschild.
Italy is very dear to the designer’s heart. Being half Italian encouraged him to host his first fashion shows in Rome and Milan.
It is also where he was elected Fashion Designer of the Year 2005 at the prestigious L’Ago D’Oro (Golden Needle) Awards.
Los Angeles is the destination for the collections most outstanding dresses, straight off the runway, where they can reach
major Red Carpet events. On the other side, the bustling city of New York offers its own world-class events organized by
top of the line partners such as Kleinfeld Bridal.
Tony Ward’s timeless designs seduce a vast clientele from all around the world. While the Beirut and Moscow flagship stores
exhibit the complete couture and ready to wear collections, prestigious multibrand stores in Italy, Spain, USA, Singapore, Hong
Kong and more than 40 other cities in the world carry the brand alongside their luxury ready to wear curated selections.

where hours of meticulous handwork are necessary for the
creation of a couture dress.

T
Stories
he Paris Fashion Weeks, or that time of the
year where breathtaking designs, gorgeous
models and creative street styles blossom, are
a “magical” period for every Fashion addict.
But do you really know the amount of work required
to bring all of that glamour and glitter to life? A special
insider’s look behind the scenes depicts the making of our
Spring/Summer 2015 Fashion Show, which involves much
more sweat and tears than one can imagine while watching
the models gently gliding down the runway.
Eight hours before the show, the spacious hall of the
Mairie du 4ème arrondissement is already crowded! The
lighting director is here with his crew, the production team
is installing the catwalk, the seats, the backstage area.
Everything needs to be ready before the hair & make-up
starts. Pablo Rodriguez arrives with the M·A·C PRO team
of make-up artists, followed closely by Yusuke Taniguchi
and his team of hairdressers.
Intricate movements imagined by the talented Yusuke Tanigushi to follow
the Couture Spring/Summer 2015 inspiration theme: Gothic Architecture
11
The models start to show up; they immediately go to hair and make-up. As soon as the first
girl is ready, her beauty look is tested on the catwalk. Does it look nice on the pictures with
the lighting on? After some fine-tuning, the make-up now looks flawless. In parallel, the
press office team is here, working on the seating plan, dividing it into sections, assigning
seats and displaying the press kits. Finally all the models are here, rehearsals can start. No
time to rehearse more than twice. Everything needs to be perfect though!
12
The guests are already at the door… can't keep them
waiting too long. The models are ready backstage. Last
details are being taken care of. Doors open. A big crowd
starts pouring in. Journalists, clients, socialites, bloggers
and friends are all welcomed by the Tony Ward PR team.
They’re shown to their seats. It gets more and more
crowded, the hall is packed with very fashionable
people. It is time for the show to begin. Music on, lights
on, and there you have it: the first model on the runway
wearing a sheer embroidered dress with a silk perforated
jacket - sheer embroidered dresses will happen to be
the next big thing this season - More models wearing
couture gowns and suits, elegantly moving to the rhythm
of custom-made electronic music. Front row guests are
taking pictures, hashtagging their favorite moments
of the show, #TonyWard is trending.
Fifteen minutes later, it is already over. Most of the
guests start running again, they have to make it to their
next show. They barely have time to eat! Backstage,
everyone's ecstatic. Privileged journalists are allowed
in, interviews and selfies with the designer are roughly
negotiated. Inspirations, fabrics, colors, everything is
meticulously described. Finally an hour later, time for
the designer and his team to take a break. The afterparty
will be a well-deserved celebration with friends and
close clients, where champagne will be flowing.
But the pause is only temporary, three hours later
the pictures are ready and it’s time to dispatch them
worldwide. Now the real work begins!

Beauty
With M·A·C Cosmetics
Senior Make-up Artist PABLO RODRIGUEZ
The very talented Argentinian make-up artist based in London is behind the latest Tony Ward make-up looks. He has worked
with Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen, Gucci, Kenzo, Lanvin and many more, creating flawless looks inspired from
their rich brand universe.
Q: How does a fashion week day look like for you?
A: They are very long days with early starts. We get picked up
at five or six am, going from one show to another. At the end of
the day you might have a make-up test for another upcoming
show. It is hectic, but fun.
Q: What is the most challenging part of creating a
make-up look for a fashion show?
A: It is like a puzzle. It has to fit with the designer’s vision, but
also with the hair, the models, etc. If you move one of those
pieces, you may need to move all the other pieces too.
18
“
My most memorable backstage moments
„
are probably the ones at the beginning of my career; they are
the ones that made the biggest impression. It’s like a first love:
good or bad, you will never forget it
Q: What inspired you to create the make-up for the
latest Tony Ward fashion show? How did you come
up with a specific design for every space? If a woman
wants to have the same look, what are the essentials
she needs to have in her make-up kit?
A: It was a mix of Tony’s theme for the collection, with the
colour palette for the dresses. It was all done with pastels and
black. It was very romantic, but with a sharp edge. To create
the same captivating yet soft smoky eyes look of the show,
you need all the black basics, like black eye liner, mascara and
false eyelashes. But also an aqua green eye shadow as a base
all over the eyelid, and a peach nude lip gloss.
Q: Can you share with us a make-up secret that you use
on the catwalk and that could transform a woman's
daily beauty ritual?
A: There are many tricks that are subtle but make a difference:
"Always curl lashes and brush eyebrows up, exfoliate your skin
regularly including the lips, match up the foundation to the
body, so it looks like a uniform colour.”

Moscow Extraordinaire
A historical location facing the Kremlin, dazzling designs
and an impressive audience lay at the core of the Tony Ward

Fashion Week Russia's major hits for its 30th anniversary. On
the runway, the Fall/Winter 2015-16 Ready to Wear collection
of cocktail and evening dresses, inspired from nature in
abstract paintings. In the audience, famous Russian actresses
such as Pauline Askeri, Natalia Bardo and Tatiana Kosmacheva.
The Russian social and political elite, the clients as well as the

The setting chosen to capture the essence of the Tony Ward brand in Sao Paulo is a building
designed by Ruy Ohtake, a key Brazilian modernist architect; it is a landmark of modern
architecture in the area of Vila Madalena, Sao Paulo. It currently hosts RED studios, a
platform which includes exhibition spaces, creative labs and a residency program for
artists, designers and creative people.

A collaboration
between Tony Ward
& Phoenicia Hotel Beirut
Born after the Phoenicia Hotel invited Tony Ward to conceive a delightful, fashionable experience for their guests, “A Taste
for Couture” is an exclusive collaboration between the designer and the iconic hotel. Tony Ward designed a limited edition
couture menu for Eau de Vie around the theme "Abstract Rose”, injecting a touch of fashion into the renowned restaurant. The
launching event on April 16th gathered journalists and clients for a delightful experience where Couture meets Gastronomy.
The limited edition menu is available for 3 months at Eau de Vie restaurant.

it’s also about charity, where a contribution

„
In the year 1961, during Lebanon’s Golden Era, a world class
hotel opened its doors on the shores of Beirut, the Phoenicia
InterContinental. After celebrating its 50th anniversary in
September 2011, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea with its
majesty and grandeur, Phoenicia Hotel, Beirut stands proudly at
the heart of Beirut as a legendary landmark of the Middle East.
Combining a unique elegant exterior with a fabulous majestic
interior, the hotel became in the blink of an eye, a reference in
the world of hospitality. Its reputation for class and luxurious
living echoed around the globe. Kings, queens, world leaders,
celebrities, businessmen and the jet set alike, made the Hotel
their home away from home, contributing to the country’s
golden age, an upswing period during which Lebanon was
known as the “Switzerland of the Middle East”. It remains
Lebanon's most iconic hotel till today.

abstract Roses
The multiple representations of roses in abstract paintings were the inspiration behind the Tony Ward Bridal 2016 Collection.
The construction found in nature’s wonders and its endless shapes and figures fed the couturier’s imagination and led him to
create a collection where rich fabric and shimmery splashes of embroidery add a royal touch to the intertwining and graphical
natural forms. A number of independent elements have come together to create these well-proportioned and sophisticated
looks. Subsequently, romantic ball gowns designed for majestic entrances with draped bodices and full tulle skirts finished with
scalloped hems reside side by side with deep-V necklines that follow the lines of the body to produce a 'molded' effect. Tightly
fitted bodices emphasize the midriff where floral embellishments add flavor, texture, and individuality to the simple, structured
forms. Richly embroidered strapless bodices and slim A-line skirts give a three-dimensional feel with a decidedly modern edge.

A TASTE FOR GOODNESS
Tony Ward & Fleur de Lys for LIBAMI
A thin velvet white crust holds a Madagascar Vanilla cream

The designer buche imagined by Tony Ward for Fleur de Lys, gourmet caterer, was launched during an event at the Tony
Ward headquarters in December 2014. From the very first collaboration between Tony Ward and Michel Ferneini, a project
is born titled «A Taste for Goodness» supporting Libami, a charity organization that helps underprivileged children gain
access to education.
To create the ultra-stylized gourmet fashion dessert, Tony Ward drew his inspiration from the 3D geometric shapes often
seen in his couture creations. Celebrity Chef Charles Azar developed this one-of-a-kind, deliciously refined concoction.

A collaboration between Tony Ward and the architecture and design studio White sur White gave birth to one-of-a-kind metallic

lights, this line of modular accessories are fashion-forward items initially developed to celebrate the launch of the very first
issue of FORWARD.

The Ultimate
Cannes
Red Carpet:
Lebanese filmmaker Ely Dagher has taken the top prize in the short film category at Cannes Film Festival, with his “Waves
98” being awarded a Palme d’Or on May 24th 2015. The director, who divides his time between Beirut and Brussels, beat out
more than 4,500 other filmmakers for the award. Dagher’s “Waves 98” explores the filmmaker’s current relationship with his
homeland, told through the story of a teenager who has become disillusioned with his life in the segregated suburbs of Beirut
until an unusual discovery lures him into the depths of the city. Immersed into a world that is so close yet so isolated from his
reality, he finds himself struggling to keep his attachments, his sense of home...
68
The talented Director had filmed a beautiful making-of
video of the Tony Ward Ready to Wear Spring/Summer 2014
collection, tastefully putting together backstage footage of
the look book photoshoot session and creating a masterful,
artistic video.
Lebanese filmmaker Ely Dagher is a multitalented artist. His sought-after Fashion illustrations recurrently appear
in top international magazines. We have experienced the talent and creativity of this humble young man and are
eager to see him reach for the stars. The best of luck to him in his future career!
